Study of a painted stove from Zalipie, Poland. This village is known for its cottages that are adorned inside and out with decorative folk motifs. In this painting, my goals were to study how light and color behaves on the clay oven material, and explore how to balance detailed designs with painterly brush strokes.

I've been further connecting with my Polish culture through a fantasy environment design project that I'm working on, so stay tuned for updates on that later this year! :)

propaganda: i like how barbey's photos of poland are mostly in shades of grey even though the colors are clearly there. the decor on the wall and the woman's clothes and the geese's beaks are colorful!!!!! but you can almost mistake this for a black and white photo. magic. very nice retro vibe

[Auschwitz, an elderly woman crying] 1981:

propaganda: was this woman one of the survivors? did she have family members who were murdered in auschwitz? in the background behind the gate younger people seem to be visiting the place as tourists, but for her this is a very personal tragedy.

about the author: Bruno Barbey was a french photographer who documented life in many poor or war-ridden areas of the world. There was an exhibition of his works earlier this year at the National Museum in Warsaw. his photos of 70s and 80s poland are a fascinating glance into the past, i really like how they show that even in (sometimes shocking) poverty there are moments of genuine joy and beauty. you can see more of them here and here

Zalipie, Poland "A small village in the southeast of Poland, is vibrantly adorned with traditional folk art. This design took off in the 1800s when homes in the area did not have chimneys to release the smoke from the cottage. This resulted in a blackened interior along the walls and the ceiling.

In order to brighten up the insides of the home, women started to paint white designs over the soot-darkened areas. Their paint brushes were made from birch sticks that were split into many little pieces at the end."

MY ABELIAS HAVE POWDERY MILDEW. We have now acquired a fungicide and sprayed down everything in a six-foot radius of Patient Zero, a crape myrtle that had “mysteriously” not grown much foliage back this year. Thrilling, I know.

Coincidentally, I had someone else’s post about chronic fatigue and taking constant breaks in my queue. The village of Zalipie, located in southeastern Poland, is a living painting inhabited by around 800 people.

The identity of Zalipie began to take shape two centuries ago when housewives sought the best ways to cover the soot stains from their stoves, which blackened their ceilings. At first, they washed them, then they started painting them white, using cow hair as a brush and a mixture of dumpling fat, milk, sugar, and egg whites as paint. When the stains began to seep through the whitewash, they thickened the problem areas and, little by little, transformed them into geometric shapes and later into colorful flowers.

Where the "canvas" couldn't hold the painting, the women found alternatives. Although the need was originally limited to the ceiling, they began painting down the walls, then moved on to stoves, doghouses, birdcages, chicken coops, barns, trees, courtyard wells, porches, and even the exteriors of houses. Even the churches in Zalipie have interiors adorned with floral motifs, which blend harmoniously with the icons and other Christian elements.

Perhaps the most famous local story is that of Felicja Curylowa, a small, frail old woman with white hair who painted every corner of her home, inside and out, as well as every household object. Years after her passing, her house was transformed into a museum. The tradition was carried on by other elderly women, who still paint unexpected objects, wear hand-painted clothes, and sit in their gardens, where every flower pot and bench is covered in floral motifs. They wave at visitors, inviting them inside. It would be a shame to refuse. A warm smile, a few words despite the language barrier, and a sparkle in their eyes as you admire the painted ceilings—all these complete the authentic experience of Zalipie and its people, who have turned what they had into art, without commercial intentions, ostentation, or propaganda of any kind...

propaganda: The composition is just so very striking, its simple in the idea but wow it works it. It looks almost unnatural in it.

propaganda: This was taken in Kraków. You can look up Ryczek's own perspective on it on his web site, where he likens it to the Yin Yang symbol. When I first saw it, I felt like it was two worlds spilling into each other, and therefore themselves falling apart in a way, and it felt chaotic to me. Beautiful composition.
