Which was kinda making him upset too because what if his sister was being an idiot and starting to eat trash again. But then he was too angry to come to peace with this and just scowled maybe wondering if he could use the ingredients as part of other recipes and let it go. Announcing Winners WGA Awards 2019: ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?,’ ‘Eighth Grade’

In a pair of upsets, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” has won the Writers Guild of America’s adapted screenplay award for Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty and Bo Burnham has won the original screenplay award for “Eighth Grade.”

The major television trophies went to “The Americans,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Homeland” and “Barry” for the 71st Writers Guild Awards, held at dual ceremonies at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., and the Edison Ballroom in New York City. It was the last major awards show before the Feb. 24 Academy Awards.

“Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” based on the memoir of the late Lee Israel, topped the screenplays for “Black Panther,” “If Beale Street Could Talk” “A Star Is Born”; and “BlacKkKlansman.” Though the script for the comedy-drama — the story of how Israel discovered her talent for forgery — has received an Oscar nomination, “Beale Street” and “BlacKkKlansman” were regarded as the front-runners. It appears that the tale of the travails and redemption of a professional writer clearly resonated with Hollywood writers.

“I want to thank Lee,” Holofcener said in her acceptance. “She’d probably be sitting in the room judging all of us. She though she was the smartest person in the room and she probably was.”

A stunned Burnham credited star Elsie Fisher for his winning the WGA award. Burnham won over Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma”; Adam McKay’s “Vice”; Bryan Woods, Scott Beck, and John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place”; and Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga, and Brian Currie’s “Green Book.” “Roma,” “Vice” and “Green Book” are all nominated for Academy Awards along with “The Favourite” and “First Reformed” while “Eight Grade” did not receive an Oscar nod.

“Eighth Grade,” which stars Fisher as an awkward teen dealing with the final week of eighth grade, also won the first-time Directors Guild of America Award for Burnham on Feb. 2. The film is also up for four Spirit Awards on Feb. 23.

“To the other nominees in the category — Have fun at the Oscars, losers!” Burnham joked in his acceptance. “No, I prepared nothing. This all belongs to Elsie Fisher who performed the script. No one would care about the script if she hadn’t done it.”

“Eighth Grade” is the first film to win the WGA Original Screenplay award without being nominated for an Academy since Michael Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine” in 2003.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won the comedy series award for Kate Fodor, Noah Gardenswartz, Jen Kirkman, Sheila Lawrence, Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman Palladino. Starring Rachel Brosnahan, “Mrs. Maisel” won the Emmy for best comedy series last year.

The final season of “The Americans” took the drama series award for Peter Ackerman, Hilary Bettis, Joshua Brand, Joel Fields, Sarah Nolen, Stephen Schiff, Justin Weinberger, Joe Weisberg and Tracey Scott Wilson.

Bill Hader and Alec Berg won the episodic comedy award for the opening segment of HBO’s “Barry,” “Chapter One: Make Your Mark” (“Barry”). They also won the new series award.

Stephanie Gillis won the animated award for the “Bart’s Not Dead” episode of “The Simpsons” — which was just renewed for its 31st and 32nd seasons by Fox — and showrunner Alex Gansa took the episodic drama award for the “Paean To The People” segment of “Homeland.” “Bathtubs Over Broadway” took the documentary award and “God of War” won the videogame trophy.

Hulu’s “Castle Rock” won the long-form original award and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” took the adapted long-form trophy. “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won the comedy-variety series cagtegory.

Chelsea Peretti hosted the West Coast ceremonies while Roy Wood Jr. was the emcee in New York. “All the glitz and glamor of the Oscars without the pressure of public interest,” Peretti said in her intro.

Jordan Peele’s horror-comedy “Get Out” won the WGA Award for original screenplay and James Ivory’s coming-of-age drama “Call Me by Your Name” won for adapted screenplay last year. Both went on to win the Oscar.

The WGA awards are mixed indicator of Oscar sentiment. Six of the last 10 WGA winners have gone on to win Academy awards over the past five years. The awards are decided in voting by the 17,000 members of the WGA.

The West Coast ceremonies included plenty of political commentary. Adam McKay, on receiving the WGA’s Paul Selvin Award for “Vice,” asked for a “beat of silence” for the million people who died during the invasion of Iraq.

Jenji Kohan, recipient of the Paddy Chayefsky Award, was unable to attend due to having to shoot the final episode of “Orange Is the New Black.” She said in a taped message: “I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with enormously funny and kind people. I love the people I work with. Life is too short to work with a******s, by the way. That’s my Public Service Announcement.”

BACKGROUND

Oliver was born to the Kendall family, known for being strict, rich assholes. However, Arabella Kendall was a soft, warm-hearted girl and most people didn’t believe she’d come from such horrid parents. Arabella never had much luck in love, and had found herself falling for someone she knew she shouldn’t. A  man whom cheated on his wife with her. It was a one time thing, something Arabella knew couldn’t happen again, something she wanted to pretend never happened. Except, she fell pregnant, and she left her parents to have the child, not wanting him to grow up as she had. 

Arabella was determined to make it on her own, but unfortunately, she passed giving birth to Oliver, leaving him with a name and a small wooden charm she’d carved him, that he wears on a string around his neck and refuses to take it off.

His Grandparents were alerted and they immediately brought him back to their home, as they had still been Arabella’s next of kin, as she’d not gotten around to changing it. They didn’t want to make the mistakes they made with their daughter and this time, they were far more cruel in the hopes he wouldn’t turn out as soft. They wanted Ollie to be a hardened businessman, shaping him to be the perfect family heir.

He was home schooled, in an attempt to cut him off from making connections with people that could ‘corrupt’ him, so he’s a little awkward and unsure how to interact with people most of the time.

Over the years, his grandfather’s treatment grew crueler, and Ollie became littered in bruises and scars. He was terrified, and barely left the house. 

When he did, however, he was found by Ellie Waters, who had been a close friend of Arabella’s and promised to look out for her son. She was horrified at the treatment of the boy, and had him taken away from his grandparents, who were sent to jail. 

Ellie took Ollie in herself, and at first, he was confused and overwhelmed. He suddenly had a new family, but he really didn’t know what that meant. Eventually, he warmed up to the Waters, and is forever grateful to them for accepting him into their family when he knew they didn’t have to.

The summer he was 16, Ollie met Zachary Simms. The first boy he’d ever had a crush on, and how Ollie realised he was gay. The two had a brief summer romance as Zach actually lived in Charleston at the time, and he was also Ollie’s first kiss. 

Ollie came out when he was 17, and at first he was terrified, as his grandparents had been openly homophobic, but the Water’s accepted him with open arms. Slowly but surely, he began to come out of his shell more.

Ollie is very shy, and very awkward, and actually went to school when he was adopted by the Waters’. However, starting school at 15 wasn’t the best experience, he had no idea how to talk to people, and he struggled hard to keep up with the rest of his year group. Eventually he just scraped passable grades, and actually made a few friends.

Due to this, Ollie didn’t go to college, instead working at the Arcade where he’d spent a lot of his time after the Waters’ had adopted him and the boy had gained freedom.

He’s not actually dated anyone, apart from that summer romance with Zach back when they were in HS. He’s occasionally made out with one or two people while he’s drunk, but he’s a hopeless romantic at heart but he’s also terrified off being that vulnerable with people. 

Has absolutely no idea who his father is, and has no intention of finding out, as he had always been told the man didn’t want him. 

He’s come a lot more out of his shell these days, but sometimes he can still shut down if anything triggers memories of his abuse. He’s been diagnosed with PTSD, and goes to a therapist every week.

Ever since he found out Dean was to be Nora’s kid’s godfather, Zach was a little bitter to say the least. Logically, he knew it made sense. He was her best friend and he was a dad and she his kid’s godmother, not to mention Zach was barely an adult, so it all made sense. But he couldn’t let go of the bitterness anyway. Dean had always been the better brother in Nora’s eyes, he knew that, and in all honesty Zach couldn’t entire bear the chirpy guy with the everything is oh so great mentality. But it was whatever and he mostly just avoided talking to Nora not wanting to end up saying something petty. When she asked that they talk that day, Zach was not all that eager but obliged anyway. When she opened the door, he muttered a “Hi.” and went to place the food he had brought on her table before turning to her. “What’s up?” @qvietwhispers​

He had received the invitation to Stella and Theo’s Vow Renewal and he knew he would but the whole bring a plus one thing was making him nervous. Granted, he already knew who he wanted to take but they weren’t even official yet which didn’t seem right considering how easily her name had come to his mind when he thought about who to take. Damien was out and Zach invited Alex to his place, wanting to get the whole thing about where they were in their relationship sorted which made him kind of nervous. When he heard the knock, he opened the door grinning at her. “Hi.” @wcrstorm​

The reception was pretty darn gorgeous and he felt at ease as he danced with Alex. Ever since the first day he had met her, she had made him feel comfortable which wasn’t something he felt a lot with many people. It was rare that he found it easy to be around others and so when they began to date it only made sense to Zach to hold on to her as long as she’d let him. He twirled her around before his hands went to her waist again and forehead rested against hers. “Did I already tell you that you look beautiful?” he said teasingly, this was about the fourth time he had brought up how stunning she looked that day. @wcrstorm​
