Zaanse Schans in Zaandam, The Netherlands
Between 1961 and 1974, several old buildings from the Zaanstreek region were carried to the Zaanse Schans neighborhood. Therefore, the village mostly consists of relocated historic windmills and wooden houses. Only two of the windmills in the village were originally constructed in Zaanse Schans.

Zaanse Schans, Netherlands: Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Zaandijk, Netherlands. It is best known for its collection of historic windmills and wooden houses that were relocated here from the wider region north of Amsterdam for preservation. From 1961 to 1974, old buildings from all over the region known as the Zaanstreek were relocated using lowboy trailers to Zaanse Schans. Wikipedia

Man’s Impact on the Environment Zaandam Zaanstad North Holland Netherlands
Zaandam (Dutch pronunciation: [zaːnˈdɑm] (listen)) is a city in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It is the main city of the municipality of Zaanstad, and received city rights in 1811. It is located on the river Zaan, just north of Amsterdam.
The statistical district Zaandam, which covers the city and the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 76,804. Zaandam was a separate municipality until 1974, when it became a part of the new municipality of Zaanstad.
The history of Zaandam (formerly called Saenredam) and the surrounding Zaan River region (the Zaanstreek) is intimately tied to industry. In the Dutch Golden Age, Zaandam served as a large milling centre. Thousands of windmills powered saws that processed Scandinavian wood for the shipbuilding and paper industries. A statue that commemorates this industry was commissioned from sculptor Slavomir Miletić, and the statue, De houtwerker ("The Woodworker"), was installed on 20 June 2004.
Zaandam was a leading city in the first Industrial Revolution. Into the second half of the 20th century, Zaandam was still an important lumber port. Zaandam is also historically linked with the whaling industry.
In 1697, Czar Peter I of Russia spent some time in Zaandam, where he studied shipbuilding. He stayed in a little wooden house built in 1632, but was soon forced to leave because he attracted too much attention from the local population; he moved to Amsterdam, where he studied at one of the wharves of the Dutch East India Company. The wooden house he stayed was preserved and turned into a museum, the Czar Peter House. A statue honoring him was placed on the nearby Dam Square in 1911, and was declared a Rijksmonument.
In 1871, the impressionist painter Claude Monet lived in Zaandam for approximately half a year. During that time, he made 25 paintings of the area, including Houses on the Achterzaan, Bateaux en Hollande pres de Zaandam and A windmill at Zaandam
The first European McDonald's restaurant opened in Zaandam in 1971. The Albert Heijn supermarket chain (founded in nearby Oostzaan in 1887), now grown into the Ahold Delhaize retail company, is headquartered in Zaandam. Chocolate manufacturer Verkade also hails from Zaandam.
Football club AZ (Alkmaar Zaanstreek) was founded in Zaandam on May 10, 1967.
There are two railway stations in Zaandam: Zaandam railway station and Zaandam Kogerveld railway station. Plans exist by the province of North Holland to extend the Amsterdam Metro to Zaandam.

Port of Amsterdam Welcomes Royal Huisman
Port of Amsterdam Welcomes Royal Huisman
Port of Amsterdam has become home to another world class yacht manufacturer. Royal Huisman has arrived on the docks and will be operating from the former Holland Jachtbouw shipyard in Zaandam, which came under the ownership of Port of Amsterdam in May of this year. It is the second superyacht manufacturer to join this community after Feadship, which opened its facilities there in 2016.
The CEO of Port of Amsterdam, Koen Overtoom, has commented on the acquisition of the shipyard and the decision to lease it to Royal Huisman: “It is a boost to the manufacturing industry, which adds significant value to our port. It is also an excellent way for us to promote our “Port of Partnerships” concept.” Mr. Overtoom forecasts that the skilled workforce, close proximity to the airport and strong Dutch enterprise will see the port become a fully-fledged superyacht hub.
Jan Timmerman, CEO of Royal Huisman, further added: “In extending our facilities in the Amsterdam region, we will be able to properly meet the growing demand among current and new customers. This second shipyard will, over a longer period of time, serve as an excellent addition to our existing site in Vollenhove, both for new builds and for refits.”
Gerard Ram, Alderman for Economic Affairs, has commented on the shipbuilding legacy of the Zaanstreek area, whose dominant industry has been nautical since the days of the United East India Company.
Royal Huisman’s arrival, according to Mr. Ram, is a huge bolster to the local industry:“With its high-quality employment opportunities and low environmental impact, the company will help us achieve our plans of converting the Achtersluispolder area into a unique space that can accommodate both commercial and residential needs."
Port of Amsterdam has well and truly put Amsterdam on the map, both as a destination among yacht owners and as a business location for manufacturers and suppliers. The area has always been renowned for its craftsmanship and quality standards, and the entry of Royal Huisman brings it one step further towards becoming a globally-renowned superyacht hub.
