Jukebox January: Day 12
the original post tag of all my posts
Laternas - Sudden Lights
"Mēs būsim laternas vistumšākajā naktī" is the line in this song that makes me feel so warm, so comforted, so bright, so hopeful. Of all Sudden Lights songs this is the one that most recalls why they chose their name, which is to bring light through music, if I remember the interview right. This song means so much to me, a reminder of light and warmth in the darkest times. I also suggest listening to the live version from their Zaļais teātris live album, it's even better live, when everyone is singing together and Kārlis can go wild on the guitar solo.
Legendid Oma Loos - Jaagup Tuisk
Another one I discovered from a Eurovision fan contest and absolutely fell in love with. A couple years ago, I used to listen to this every day on the way to work to give myself energy for the day. It's perfect for that!
Loyal Like Sid and Nancy - Foster the People
Okay, now this takes a darker turn, but this song is musically amazing and politically relevant. I love the contrast between the different sections, and the rap-style vocals, so many genres here and despite the differences it all flows together. The references to a ton of famous people and events are perfect, some as metaphors and some as very literal societal problems, connecting all of it together.
Lean On - Major Lazer, DJ Snake, MØ
This is not the kind of music I normally listen to, but it's here because I remember it being a super popular song in the fall of 2015, which was my first semester of college, and whenever I hear it I'm immediately transported back to that, where everything was new and exciting and somewhat overwhelming and didn't even seem entirely real at the time because it was a big transition in my life. So, for all those memories that come with it, I have to include it in my list.
Laura Palmer - Bastille
It's hard to count how many times in my life I've listened to Bastille's first album. So many good songs! This remains a favorite because I feel like the music reflects the lyrics so well, it really gives me a sense of running.
