Day Twenty-five: A Picture of a Band With a Strange Name
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
30 Day Band Challenge
Dexy's Midnight Runners
The name comes from the drug Dexadrine - a brand of dextroamphetamine that was used recreationally by Northern soul fans.
ZZ Top
Gibbons noticed that lots of artists had names that included initials. He sought to combine the names of his musical heros, B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill. He decided that 'Z.Z. King' sounded too similar to B.B. King, so he changed it to Z.Z. Top, because 'B.B. is at the top'.
Toad the Wet Sprocket
The band thought it would be funny to create a name that made no sense.

the other side of Lady Wilde
"Lady Wilde is Marie Smith, who actually was from the UK, and was recording in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. They appeared locally as Lady Wilde and the Warlocks and played at Louann’s in Dallas and Panther Hall in Ft. Worth.
The Warlocks are the same band that included future Z.Z. Top bassist Dusty Hill and his brother Rocky Hill."

California Blues Playlist
Yep, I've got the blues, folks; and this week, they happen to come from a place that you might not normally associate them with: California. See, a lot of blues scenes first popped up in the south and midwest in the early half of the 20th century, but as black southerners were packing their bags and leaving the Jim Crow south to find better opportunities, a lot of them would end up either heading straight for California or finding their way there, eventually. So, here's a little, off-the-beaten path playlist of some superb Cali-made gems, spanning from the mid-60s to the mid-90s.
Now, a rather large chunk of this thing happens to be taken up by a pair of guys who both shared the same prefix of "Little" in their stage name: Little Joe Blue and Little Johnny Taylor. And I don't know what either of their physical statures truly were, but nothing about their music would suggest to me that they were small 😅. Little Joe Blue was often derided as a copycat of B.B. King, but I think that criticism really misses the forest for the trees, because if you can sound like B.B. King, then that means that you are one hell of a talented blues musician yourself. So, on this playlist, Joe opens up with "Standing on the Threshold," a song with about 2,100 plays on YouTube, and then later follows up with "Gonna Walk On" and "Encourage Me Baby," which have about 4,000 and 6,600 plays, respectively.
And, by far, the two most popular tunes on this playlist are both by Little Johnny Taylor, whose "Everybody Knows About My Good Thing" ended up being more famously covered by both The Rolling Stones and Texas soul-blues legend Z.Z. Hill; but the "Part 2" version of the song that I'm supplying here only has about 1,400 plays in total. And Taylor's other big tune, "Open House at My House," which also has a play count that numbers well past 100K, was more famously covered by Z.Z. Hill too. I like Taylor's renditions of both songs better, though.
The most impressive performance of all, though, comes from its lone woman, Ledisi, who delivered an incredibly soulful and live, five-and-a-half-minute rendition of an old torch song called "Stormy Weather" at San Francisco's Cafe du Nord back around 1996. She's a pretty popular musician, with songs on YouTube that have racked up over millions of plays each, but this stunning tune of hers only has about 4,200.
And following her is another performance from that same Cafe du Nord, by a guy named Lee E. White, whose brand of blues-gospel flew way under the radar, as his quiet tune here, "You're Gonna Miss Me," only currently has four YouTube plays.
And not to be missed, either, are a couple tunes from the guy who was quite possibly the second most important force in west coast blues, behind T-Bone Walker: Lowell Fulson. On this playlist, he contributes "Sleeper" and "My Baby," both sweet and smooth late 60s-early 70s cuts, with ~24.5K and ~5.5K plays, respectively.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible and links are provided below to songs that have been posted about previously in order to give them more context:
Little Joe Blue - "Standing on the Threshold" Lowell Fulson - "Sleeper" Lowell Fulson - "My Baby" Little Johnny Taylor - "Everybody Knows About My Good Thing" Little Joe Blue - "Gonna Walk On" Little Joe Blue - "Encourage Me Baby" Little Johnny Taylor - "Open House at My House, Part 1" Little Johnny Taylor - "When the Deal Goes Down" Ledisi feat. The Rob Rhodes Trio - "Stormy Weather" Lee E. White - "You're Going to Miss Me"
(Wow, everybody's name starts with the letter L!)
This playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So, I'll be adding more songs to this sometime in the future, but for now, we start with ten very good songs that end up totaling a little over half an hour.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

List your Top 10 favorite albums
I was tagged by @biscuit-tornado I was supposed to tag 10 others, but I usually let folks self-select. No pressure.
In no particular order except for #1. Bruce is ALWAYS #1.
1. Bruce Springsteen: Darkness on the Edge of Town
Tumblr media
Having to fight for three years to escape his slave-trade contract with his first manager wrung all the Dylan-inflected romance and wordplay out of his work. This is the mature Bruce writing of everyday life. This is his masterpiece.
2. Elvis Costello: My Aim is True
Tumblr media
Blown away when I borrowed this from a high school classmate and heard the blend of rock/pop/soul hitched to the most entertaining turns of phrase I’d ever heard in rock music. I saw him on his 2019 tour—still crushing it!
3. The Wailers: Burnin’
Tumblr media
The best album with the OG’s: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. I’m a big fan of Bob Marley’s later solo career, but it was better with all three.
4. Lucinda Williams: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
Tumblr media
Ever put an album on and every single song is perfect? This is such an album. If anyone asks you “what’s Americana music?” sit them down and make them listen to this album. Poetic, funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking. Oh—and amazingly tuneful as well!
5. The Who: Quadrophenia
Tumblr media
The better of the Who's two rock operas because it deals with real life rather than fantasy. The four separate musical themes, the majestic set against the quiet, this is Townsend at his best. Daltrey’s voice carries the bombast without breaking. Plus, has any band ever written so lovingly and eloquently about their fan base? They were after all the Mods band of choice.
6. Marshall Crenshaw: self-titled
Tumblr media
Another out of nowhere debut album that just made me flip out. I’m a sucker for power pop anyway—I just played this and sang along for weeks after picking this up. I got to see him play a bar in Syracuse a couple albums into his career- just brilliant live as well.
7. Van Morrison: Tupelo Honey
Tumblr media
Probably one of the untypical discs of his career—steeped in the American folk rock he was immersed in while living in Woodstock, N.Y. But I happened across a copy just as I was falling in love with my now wife. The title track was going to be our first dance song at our wedding—but both of us were too shy to dance to a 7 minute song in front of everyone. It was the second song though!
8. Z.Z. Top: Tres Hombres
Tumblr media
I picked this up early in high school, one of the first albums I bought on my own. Bluesy rock stomp. They are the perfect band—although the MTV era sometimes got a little too poppy and synth-heavy. But MTV doesn’t play music anymore and despite the recent passing of Dusty Hill, that li’l old band from Texas is still at it!
9. J. Geils Band: Full House Live
Tumblr media
The greatest rock/soul/blues band not named the Rolling Stones. Peter Wolf is the frontman every frontman wishes they could be. And of course, do not forget Magic Dick on the lickin’ stick! I mean, c’mon—how much more rock and roll does it get than a harp player who is only identified as Magic Dick?
10. Little Feat: Waiting for Columbus
Tumblr media
They paired the slightly off-kilter sensibilities of Lowell George, with a tour-hardened band and THEN threw in the Tower of Power horn section—this document of the band at its peak is just amazing. Even after all these years, I get a buzz when I hear the band’s a capella coming-to-the-stage rave up “Join the Band” diving into the announcer doing the call and response F-E-A-T! cheer. It is no surprise that this was the first album I bought when I got a component stereo system. It was also the very first CD I bought when I moved away from vinyl.

King και τον Z.Z. Hill), είτε αναφέρεται σε μια, πλέον εκτός κυκλοφορίας, αμερικανική μάρκα για χαρτάκια για να τυλίγουν τους μπάφους τους.
