(2/5) in fact, overall I’d say she’s way worse. She constantly belittles her children (including JC). JFM obviously favours WWX over JC, which is obviously not okay, but the guy at the very least respects his daughter’s happiness, and doesn’t downright torture any of his kids. But here’s the thing - people are just not okay with the idea that JC is getting neglected and that seems to translate into a dislike of JFM’s character. However then we get YZY who downright tortures WWX constantly

In fact, they’re things that she’s pretty much made up in her head, since the novel pretty much confirms that the idea of WWX being JFM’s bastard son is just a rumour. The poor guy grows up being constantly belittled, tortured, made to feel like he isn’t good enough. The last thing she does before she dies is blame everything on him and then make him pledge his life to her useless son

(4/5) I’m not saying that people ignore this treatment of WWX in fic, but it’s just the difference in opinion in the fandom. Because people acknowledge that what YZY did to WWX was awful but then at the same time a lot of people still seem to really like the character? And they act there’s this grey area where they feel like they need to understand her actions because JFM doesn’t treat her right, or because she’s a scorned woman, and that should not give her an excuse to outright torture 

I seem to be missing part 1 and 5, which is... a new low honestly, get your shit together tumblr, but I’m guessing what I’m missing is talking about people saying JFM is worse than YZY, so I’m gonna go with that.

Y’know, if I absolutely had to pick one of them to raise me... it’d be JFM, hands down. Is he neglectful? Yes. Should he do more to keep his wife from tormenting his children and his ward? Absolutely! But at the end of the day, YZY is cruel in a way that JFM doesn’t get close to. Except that time he tells WWX to his face that he should die for JC, but YZY does the same thing (and also tells WWX that the fall of Lotus Pier is his doing even though she’s the one who openly antagonized WLJ and refused to set her pride aside for five fucking seconds to realize being a supervisory office was better than being dead) so we’ll just set that aside for now. The best example I think is YZY’s first scene in CQL. JFM is just... hanging out with his kids. They’re laughing and smiling and genuinely having a good time. Then YZY enters and all of that stops instantly. She just sucks the joy out of everyone else in her family because they all know she’ll be jumping on any perceived flaw the moment she gets the chance. The Jiang kids can be happy with JFM. They can’t be happy with YZY. That in and of itself says pretty clearly that she’s way worse than JFM.

For fuck’s sake, she deliberately and openly makes WWX’s life miserable because of a rumour. A child, who’s never done anything to hurt her. He’s better than JC and just happens to be the son of her husband’s rumoured (rumoured! There isn’t even proof that JFM did have feelings for CSSR!) crush, so she feels entirely justified in treating him like shit. And I see so, so many fics where JFM “realizes that YZY is great actually” and starts being all lovey-dovey with her and suddenly it’s like she’s a whole different person, treating the kids well and not tormenting WWX and everything. Like... that is not how it works. First off, that’s basically saying if JFM just loved the woman he was probably forced to marry who’s constantly belittling him and abusing his children and ward everything would be fine! YZY being abusive has nothing to do with JFM loving her or not loving her, she’s abusive because that’s who she is. Not to mention the fics that insist she totally loves WWX deep down, she’s just bad at showing it! Meanwhile she treats him like a servant at best and was happy to maim him and turn him over to the Wens; the only reason she didn’t was because WLJ said something she didn’t like.

There’s so much stuff in the fandom that’s like... “Wow, Madam Yu, what a strong, powerful woman!” and... she’s cruel. She’s cruel and abusive and makes her children’s lives a living hell because her husband doesn’t worship at her feet. She insults or ignores every attempt JFM makes to try and bring them closer together and puts zero work into their relationship herself. She almost certainly whipped WWX more than once and raised him to believe he had to sacrifice everything for the Jiangs, that he owed them a lifetime of servitude because they didn’t let him die on the streets. If you really want to blame someone other than the Wens for the fall of Lotus Pier, she made zero effort to prepare for an attack and deliberately and openly antagonized the Wens’ representative because it hurt her pride that they sent someone she perceived as beneath her, then blamed a fucking child for it. So many of the Jiang siblings’ issues can be traced directly back to her. And some people insist JFM was worse than her because he didn’t pay attention to JC, even though the worst he did was not stop her.

Is JFM a good parent? No. But he’s leagues ahead of YZY.
