The New Hope

Star Wars “A New Hope” is the movie that started it all. Coming out in 1977, this is the movie that lit up the Star Wars universe, finally bringing to life the ideas of George Lucas. “A New Hope” marks the beginning of the original trilogy, commonly known as the period  of the Galactic Civil War. This is when the Star Wars Universe really takes a turn, so without further to do, let’s get started! 

The movie begins on a rebel frigate that is about to be captured by the Empire. The ships were the same that we saw at the end of the movie Rogue One, symbolizing that the movie takes place about a couple of hours after the events of Rogue One. The stolen Death Star plans are on that ship, so the empire really needs to get them. Led by Darth Vader, the Imperials successfully take over the ship, capturing Princess Leia and killing of any rebel attacker. Little does Vader know, R2-D2 and C-3PO are entering an escape pod with the plans and a distress message , and send themselves to the planet of Tatooine. This is where we get our first look at Luke Skywalker. He lives on a farm with his Uncle and Aunt, they’re not rich, but they have enough to live decently. As the film progresses, we learn more about Luke’s desire, and he eventually meets the two droids and  (formally) meets Obi Wan Kenobi. The bunch go to Obi Wan’s shelter where he tells them about his past, and shows Luke Anakin’s lightsaber, the “murderer of Luke’s father”. When they return to Luke’s farm, we get a horrible sight. The remains of Luke’s aunt and uncle are there, their farm destroyed and partially in flames. The people who caused this were storm troopers. Meanwhile on the death star, Leia is still help captive by Vader and the emperor. The death star blasts Leia’s homeworld of Alderaan, killing everyone who was on the planet. A broken Princess Leia is thrown in a cell. Back on the desert planet, Obi Wan and his new crew go to the infamous  Mos Eisley Spaceport. In search of a pilot, they settle with Han Solo and his partner Chewbacca. After a little scrimmage against the stormtroopers, they set of in search for the princess. On their journey they end up getting pulled by a tractor beam, to the Death Star. The end result of their little mission ended up as a success, but in the duel of Darth Vader and Obi Wan, Obi Wan purposefully lets Vader strike at him so Kenobi can turn into a force spirit. Leia takes the crew to the Rebel Base on Yavin, where they devise a plan to destroy the Death Star. As everything is finalized, the Rebel Pilots take off into the sky, to put an end to the massive weapon. The Battle over Yavin has finally begun.     

More commonly known as “The battle of the Death Star”, this battle is the next major battle in the Galactic Civil War. This battle was led by Gold Leader and Red Leader, where they are distinguished by Gold Squad piloting Y- Wings and Red Squad piloting X- Wings. There were 30 Rebel Alliance fighters in total. They had one objective; to blow up the Death Star by shooting a torpedo into a tiny hole that was designed by Galen Erso himself. If successful, the explosion would cause a chain reaction throughout the base, causing the whole base to explode. At first, the rebels would have the upper hand because the Death Star’s turrets were no math for the tiny ships. Aware of this, Vader ordered for Tie Fighters to be dispatched, so the battle could be ship vs. ship. Vader himself would get on his own Tie Fighter to join the fight as well.      

The first ship is a X-Wing, the second is a Y-Wing, and the last is a Tie Fighter. Now as the fight is more even, this is where the Imperials show their strength, picking off the rebel fighters one by one. After two failed attack runs on the little hole, both ending in the deaths of both squad leaders, this is when Luke stepped in to do an attack run of his own. With the surprise help of Han Solo and Chewbacca who shot down the Tie Fighters near Luke, Luke hits the mark. His torpedo attempts were successful, which led to the Death Star explosion. Only three Rebel Ships alongside Han and Chewie survived the battle. They had just saved Yavin. Greeted back on Yavin like heroes,  they celebrate. But the Empire isn’t finished just yet, and they want revenge !
