Thank you for the excellent meta @datshq! <3 Stumbled across this after I meta-screamed about why Kuwameshi my beloved OTP is the undercover love story in YYH! So happy to have found fellow Kuwameshi fans who enjoy meta!

The point about Yusuke 'harassing' both Keiko and Kuwabara got me thinking! Even though on the surface it seems similar, there's actually a key subtle but significant difference behind Yusuke's motivations to do so!

In Episode 1 when Yusuke 'harasses' Keiko, it's coz she was berating & nagging him quite harshly to do better in school (i.e. she verbally harassed him) - she immediately assumed he must have done something bad for Takenaka-sensei to be looking for him (when actually Yusuke hasn't done anything and Takenaka just wanted to proactively counsel him), and she outright says he'll drag her down with him into a scolding if he doesn't go meet Takenaka soon! Yusuke flipped her skirt not because he was pervy or romantically interested in her, he flipped it coz it was the fastest way to stop her words which were quite hurtful for him, coz it inadvertently confirms his worst fears about himself, that he is 'bad' and is a 'burden' for people he cares about! Keiko's words + his mom's nagging afterwards hurt him so much he fell into a black mood which was only alleviated when he brawled Kuwabara! I wrote a bit more about this in another meta about Yusuke's fear-based "Identity" (the emotional armour we build based on deep-seated fears and emotional wounds) vs his True Self!

Contrast this to Episode 67 when Yusuke seeks out Kuwabara in a good mood to eat lunch together! Yusuke jabbing Kuwabara in the ass is more of a Freudian slip! You can see from his reaction he didn't expect Kuwabara to be so outraged! ROFL! Apart from the obvious homoerotic subtext and LOL hilarity of Yusuke literally jabbing Kuwabara in the ass just as Kuwa's thinking about becoming "a real man" for Yukina, it's actually so cute and so sweet that Yusuke is seeking out Kuwabara to do normal everyday things together! This is Yusuke's way of asking for Kuwabara's attention, this is Yusuke's way of asking Kuwabara to take care of him (by feeding him), this is Yusuke realizing on some levels after the events of the Dark Tournament and everything before that, that Kuwabara is his OTP!

When Kuwabara reacts with outrage instead (coz Kuwabara's still in denial about his feelings for Yusuke at this point in time), Yusuke reacting with semi-hurt defensiveness to highlight his own strengths semi-insecurely and semi-proudly is so human and relatable! Even with so much unexamined subconscious emotions in each of them for the other, they nonetheless have a great time with each other and pounce on the opportunity to be physically close to each other under the guise of rough-housing and bickering, to the extent they totally forget about their audience! Screencaps in undercover love story meta! There's one frame where Yusuke was full body-hugging Kuwabara!

DATS Meta: Yusuke and Kuwabara and the universe singularity

So, Yusuke and Kuwabara. Their relationship is the single most important relationship in the entire show. All of the arcs up until the Sensui one rely on it developing and existing. Yusuke wouldn’t have beaten Toguro if he hadn’t spent the earlier part of the series growing closer with Kuwabara, and Kuwabara learned to shred dimensions because he felt the same way. Also holy shit these two have parallels to

all the canon couples in the show

, which means that the romantic relationships were chosen and depicted specifically to showcase aspects of Yusuke and Kuwabara’s relationship.

First there’s the way Kuwabara and Keiko both have similar scenes with Yusuke. They both get a dream of Yusuke inviting them to kiss him, Yusuke sexually harasses them both and is protective of them and flies off the handle when they’re threatened. Only, because of Kuwabara being in the line of fire more often than Keiko, it’s really more pronounced in Kuwabara’s case. A Yuyu arc just isn’t complete unless Yusuke screams after or because of Kuwabara at least once.

The start of the Sensui arc especially has a direct comparison between Kuwabara and Keiko, with Yusuke being dismissive and avoidant with Keiko in one scene and then opening up to Kuwabara about his worries in the next one. Yusuke feels similarly about Kuwabara and Keiko, but Kuwabara is closer to him because he understands the world Yusuke has wrapped himself in and therefore more easily offer him support.

Then there’s the other meta I wrote about Genkai and Kuwabara sharing a bunch of parallels and Genkai and Toguro both seeing some of Toguro in Yusuke. Genkai and Toguro are at the very least hinted at being romantically involved. The fact that Genkai sees these parallels in Yusuke and Kuwabara’s relationship, judging by her behavior before her death, it says a lot about Yusuke and Kuwabara’s rapport in-universe. Everybody Can See It.

Lastly we have Sensui and Itsuki. The romantic nature of the relationship here is more blatant, although it’s more twisted. Still, the twistedness doesn’t erase the similarity. Yusuke and Kuwabara are codependent to a degree, this much is canon in how they simply can’t function if they think the other is dead. Similarly, Sensui and Itsuki also would never leave each other. But the similarities don’t end on simply having an unhealthy fixation on each other.

One is the Spirit Detective personally chosen by Koenma, a downright prodigy in combat with quickly growing combat prowess. The other is completely devoted to his Spirit Detective, would even tear the fabric between the realms apart for him, and has the power to do that, to control dimensions to that degree. You only need to swap the names and that description would fit Sensui and Itsuki as well as Yusuke and Kuwabara equally.

These are the facts. From a more one-dimensional standpoint, this could all be read to mean that Kuwabara seems to be deliberatedly coded as Yusuke’s love interest, but that’s probably not the case since the show keeps pushing Keiko. Instead it’s merely to show that the relationship is important. The most important one, the one the entire story, and therefore universe, of Yu Yu Hakusho revolves around.

i actually was just finishing up the first ep of the yyh live action when i saw that lrb...they changed a whole lot so far and i'm trying to be excited to see what they will do with it rather than just ticked off that they changed even one thing lol. but spoiler spoiler spoilers yusuke comes back immediately at the end of the first ep without really earning it and so far i don't super love that...there was so much great character development for him and keiko and especially my #1 boy kuwa-freaking-bara while yusuke was still a ghost. i loooved the anime ep that was just kuwabara trying to support his boys while dealing with that pos teacher who kept trying to get them in trouble. so i hope they can get all the characters developed as much as they were originally or it would be a little disappointing, but i'm sure they're just trying to get to everyone's fave demon boys as fast as they can. anyway it does seem good so far although i wish kuwabara's hair was oranger and bigger. that's my post thanks for coming to my tedtalk.

Shizuru: I'm gonna go to the store now.

Shizuru: There's no way you could eat that much. Besides, I already made a cake.

Keiko: Jeez, Yusuke! Aren't you worried?

Yusuke: It's that guy we're talking about, he's gonna be fine.

Yukina: Kazuma-san, I wonder what happened to him…

Botan: Shizuru-san, don't you know the exact reason?

Shizuru: …Yeah, I don't know.

Botan: I see … Should we go look for him in a little while?

Yukina: Yes, I'm worried.

Shizuru: *Puff*, oh my  … I should have considered his feelings a little more.

Kurama: Is that so?

Kuwabara: Yukina-san will laugh at me if I wear this red nosed reindeer…

Kuwabara: But, I'm more laughable for worrying about such thing…!

Kurama: You already understand that Shizuru had no bad intentions, right?

Kuwabara: …Of course.

Kurama: He-he, that's fine then.

Kurama: It's a waste not to attend such a special party, because of those sad feelings.

Kuwabara: That's right … But, how can I go back at this late hour…

Kurama: I was on my way too. If you go with me, it'll be fine.

Kurama: Isn't Yukina-chan also waiting for you?

Kuwabara: Ha-ha, ha-ha-ha … I see. I seem so insignificant for worrying so much about it!

Who needs a shrink when you have Kurama to give you advice (lol)? Shizuru's costume is called "Empress of the Holy Night", she does look like a queen! OMG, was it really a toast without alcohol? Where is Atsuko to bring the champagne?

Besides new illustrations of Shizuru and Kuwabara wearing Christmas costumes, this story brought back Botan, Keiko and Yukina wearing cute costumes. I wish Yusuke and Kurama were also wearing cool outfits. Invite Hiei next time!

a hug after not seeing someone for a long time + Kuwameshi?

Yusuke couldn't deny it. He was grumpy, annoyed, and lonely as he walked from the airport. He sighed to himself, knowing full well it was his own fault. 

He felt a pang in his chest when he thought about being home only to be alone. Keiko had left Japan a year prior for school. Kurama had told him about that. He was happy for her.. he always knew she'd go on to do great things in life. 

Kuwabara though. He'd always felt he would be a constant. He expected for Kuwabara to be there right next to him. They'd led similar lives, had similar interests, and were on the same team. The thing was Kuwabra had waited. He'd waited and left the following day. 

"I'm going to America with Keiko. I want to experience a different side of education and help my craft." 

That was Kuwabra's reason for leaving. It's what he told him the evening he came back when he'd gone to see him that night. 

"You weren’t going to tell me?" Yusuke had asked. 

"I moved the trip back a day because Kurama had said you'd be coming back." Kuwabara replied calmly. 

"And me?" Yusuke bit out. 

"This is for me, Yusuke." Kuwabra set a hand on his shoulder. "I've spent years waiting for you. I love you. But, I need to progress in life too. Just like you chose to leave me and Keiko behind for demon world." 

"It's not like I had much choice." Yusuke had murmured back, disappointed. 

Kuwabara shook his head. "I'm still leaving. You can wait for me, go back to demon world, or just forget me. I'll understand." 

"I'd never forget you." Yusuke defended. 

Kuwabara set a hand on his neck, tilting him up. Kuwabada bent down as Yusuke tip toed to reach him. They spent the night together, their first time and last for a while. They showered together and Yusuke went with him to the airport. Which is where he found himself running at top speed and trying not to cry. Crying would be selfish, but now he knew how Keiko and Kuwabara felt. They'd moved on without him. 

He arrived back at the Kuwabara residence, nodding a greeting towards Shizuru. 

"You're welcome to stay in his room. Kazuma asked me to let you stay." Yusuke nodded his thanks. 

He found a short note on Kuwabara's desk. 

Calm down Urameshi. It's only a year. I'll see you soon.

Yusuke smiled. The big oaf had tricked him, but it made his grief entirely more bearable. He could do a year. He'd stay here with Shizuru and welcome Kuwabara back when he arrived. 

It wasn't hard to mix himself in with Kuwabara's belongings. He didn't have much to behind with. His clothes mixed with those left behind in the closet. Those helped, especially when he really missed Kuwabara. It wasn't like demon world. He'd had so many distractions, training, politics. Tve years had flown by, but on his own in human world? Time seemed to double. 

He'd found a job with Keiko's family, glad to see him. He did odd jobs around the Kuwabara household. He fixed floors, redid stairs, repainted. Shizuru had been quite surprised when she'd come home to ripped out carpet and Yusuke putting in hardwood floors. The fridge was stocked at all times. He'd started studying various things. Nothing too out there. His English got better thanks to his spars with Kurama. 

He found himself visiting Genkai's shrine a lot especially to keep Puu company. She'd given him quite the life advice concerning Kuwabara, who had also sought her expertise when Yusuke'd left. 

Kuwabada called Shizuru often. Yusuke didn't bother talking. He hadn't afforded that privilege to Keiko and Kuwabara so he shouldn't have received the same. 

He was returning from a late night of work, surprisingly exhausted. Though working after an intense training session didn't help. All he wanted was a shower and to cuddle up in Kuwabara's blankets, wondering what he was doing on the other side of the world. 

He unlocked the door and dropped the food he'd brought for Shizuru. 

"Long day, Yusuke?" She asked through a puff of he cigarette. 

"Exhausting." He'd waved, sliding his feet across the floor. 

He opened Kuwabara's room door and closed it, fully ready to collapse. 

"You really made it your own, huh?" 

Yusuke lifted his head, neck cracking from how fast he moved. His eyes widened as they zeroed in on the one person he's been waiting for. 

"K-kuwa…" he shook his head. "Kazuma." 

"My name sounds great coming from your mouth." Kuwabada laughed loudly, abnoxious and so him. 

Yusuke didn't spare a second as he ran and jumped him, pulling their cheeks together and wrapping arms around his neck. It was all so out of character for him, but he didn't care. Kuwabara was back and in his room. He inhaled his sweaty scent from traveling all day. He couldn't help the grin and wave after wave if warmth washed over him. 

"Hey, I missed you, too." Kuwabara patted his back. He pulled Yusuke close, adjusting his legs to wrap around his waist. 

They kissed as Kuwabada flipped him onto the bed and hovered over him. Yusuke's eyes widened as he wiggled out of his pants. Kuwabara shucked off his coat,, breaking the kiss for only a second to shove Yusuke's shirt over his head. Yusuke grabbed his ass and shoved Kuwabada's sweats and underwear down his hips in a smooth motion. 

Kuwabada pulled away with a smile. "Why don't we shower first? You reek and I'm sure I do too."

expanding on this a little lol but yeah as they're getting closer while they're still kids i dont think Yusuke is normal about it in the SLIGHTEST. he had a set dynamic: keiko is his friend and kuwabara is his other friend and it's awesome

but now all of a sudden his friends are pairing up? having things in common besides knowing him? he's not gonna be rational about that at like 14. he's actually gonna be insufferable

inserting himself when they're just studying, making snide suggestive remarks about their friendship making kuwa embarrassed and keiko angry which just convinces him that it's true and he gets even more upset it's a mess

he just feels like he's being left behind even though half the time kuwabara and keiko are just talking about HIM

obviously he doesn't stay like this they sit his ass down and force him to listen they both love him and the last thing they'd do is cut him out of the loop "you matter you are precious to us now stop being an asshole"

because i personally see his and keiko's relationship as like. rock solid i feel like he'd be more wary of keiko taking kuwabara out of his reach, especially when he starts getting more studious and serious about school and less involved in spirit world shit

cos keiko? he's known her forever he couldn't get rid of her even if he tried. he knew keiko before most of his insecurities settled in but kuwabara came later. after the walls were put up

and that might make him feel like "well he can leave me at any time and of the 2 of us keiko is clearly the better option..also keiko is like a girl so what if he ends up liking her more than me :(" queer insecurities moment

so i do think he'd be fighting the change in the dynamic at first. not being the sole connection between keiko and kuwabara. but he'll see that it's actually great to be friends with people that also care about each other. to be able to walk away for a little and know they have each other. when he's a little more mature

big believer in keiko and kuwabara being besties like. you're my best friend's best friend and instead of it being awkward they realize "hey i really like hanging out with you!" this is ofc extremely detrimental to yusuke who now has two people on his ass

they share textbooks keiko quizzes kuwabara til he drops and she asks for fitness advice. why do i think this? I simply think it'd be funny asf if Keiko randomly got abs of steel. yusuke walks in on them doing sit ups while testing each other on vocab and almost breaks into tears.

"Keiko stop turning kuwabara into a fucking nerd he's wasting all his time studying instead of goofing off" "yusuke shut up and feel my abs" "holy shit these guys are like rock hard" "right??"

Kuwabara gets glasses and yusuke genuinely thinks it's a bit at first but kuwa is like "man seriously I realized part of the reason school was hard was cos I couldn't make out the words in my books half the time I need these things fr" classic yyh collapse in shock moment

Keiko and Kuwa are there for each other when yusuke goes off doing god knows what in Makai. They know he'll be back but it can be shitty not knowing what he's doing when he'll be back. Kuwabara reassures her that Yusuke does give a shit even when he leaves and Keiko reminds Kuwabara of why he doesn't need to drop everything and join him. He'll be back he'll be back he'll be back.

Kuwabara can only make simple meals Shizuru forced him to learn and Keiko doesn't really cook even tho her parents own a restaurant so when yusuke is in the human world there's cheers and applause "finally I get to eat 🙏🏼" "aren't you guys graduating college soon how are you surviving when I'm not here" "get back in the kitchen boy" "yeah I need another bowl 😌" "im poisoning ur food"

because girls and guys apparently can't just hang out school mates are sure Keiko is dating kuwabara but some think she's with yusuke and others think the two are fighting over her and she just looks at them like they're stupid if anyone ever asks directly

as for Kuwabara nobody knows whether he has a gf or a bf cos sometimes a polite brunette with a sweet smile visits him on campus and they talk at a picnic table (she's seen hitting him sometimes tho) but other times a guy with slicked back hair and devil may care attitude like. swaggers up to kuwa when he's with some classmates and drops a homemade lunch in his lap "you forgot this dumbass" "ahh thanks yusuke you're a life saver 🥺" "just eat your food" inside is the cutest box lunch and yusuke's glare keeps the people kuwa was with from cracking jokes. kuwabara acts like this is very normal

anyway i just think it'd be cool if they hung out and yusuke was equal parts delighted and grumpy about it

Miss You

Kohaku bobbed his head from one side to the other as he went through the slow process of writing the names of his family members. He started with his dad’s family, furrowing his brow as he tried to work through spelling out his dad’s human name and his uncle Shuuichi’s. Most times when they were in the same room, his grandma Shiori would call his uncle ‘Kokoda’ or ‘Shu-chan’ though he preferred the former since he wasn’t little anymore.

Kohaku didn’t get it all that much because his dad said that his name was Kurama when he was really little but grandma Shiori gave him the name ‘Shuuichi’ so he used it when he could. His uncle told him that it was just like his papa calling him ‘Haku’ when his name was ‘Kohaku’. Just because he liked being called ‘Haku’ didn’t mean that he’d give up being called ‘Kohaku’.

It made a little more sense like that especially because he liked his name. Finishing with his grandfather’s name, he smiled and held the paper in front of his face before presenting it to one of the flowers that’d been watching him intently. It reached out with a vine, tracing the strokes then patting his cheek just like his dad would when he did something great.

Setting it down, he turned it sideways and started on his papa’s family. It was a lot easier because his papa and aunt Yukina didn’t have last names but he wasn’t sure where to add his Uncle Yusuke and Kuwa, or Aunt Keiko and Shizuru. Tapping his pencil against his temple, he glared at his paper and wondered if he should have gotten a bigger one.

He did have a lot of family members after all.

“What’re you doing, Haku?”

Kohaku looked over his shoulder, smiling as his papa came through the backdoor. He snatched his paper from the table and scrambled to his feet, running over to present the paper to him, fumbling to turn it sideways when his papa tried to read it right side up.

“… Family tree?” His papa asked, crouching down to take a better look at it. “You’re getting better with writing.”

Kohaku beamed at the praise. He practiced a lot although it was hard and was more than glad that it was paying off.

“I think I need a bigger paper, papa,” Kohaku pointed to the side of the page with Hiei and Yukina’s names. “Uncle Yusuke, Uncle Kuwa, Aunt Shizuru and Aunt Keiko can’t fit, let alone Koenma, Botan and Jorge..  And Grandma Genkai and Mukuro a — “

He counted off on his fingers, trying to think of who he might have missed. His papa took another look at the paper then hummed in that little grumbling way he did when he was thinking.

“Your dad may have paper in his office,” his papa says, handing his paper back to him before standing up to shut the backdoor. “Let’s see.”

Kohaku nodded and hurried to the stairs, waiting for his papa to follow after him once he took off his boots, then climbing the stairs two at a time with his paper clutched tightly in hand. It was a little hard to jump and his papa warned him not to trip and fall but he was sure that he could do it. Waiting for his papa at the top of the stairs, he smiled as his papa looked down at the steps then started taking them two at a time.

“It’s a lot faster like that,” Kohaku said with all of the wisdom that a six year old could muster.

His papa huffed, patting his head as he passed him by. “Guess you’re right,” he says, leading the way down the hall.

Usually when his dad was working from home, the door to his office would be left open so Kohaku could run in at any time. And the inside was a lot nicer now that his dad had all of his flower and the drawings that Kohaku did for him on the walls. His papa opened the door and walked through with Kohaku in tow. Looking around at the pictures on the walls of their family, some old and others newer, he smiled.

There were so many of them and his dad always reminded him that there were more to be taken and more memories to be had.

“Check in the third drawer down on the right side of his desk,” his papa says, straightening up a few of his dad’s books and picking up some of the papers and pencils left out, muttering something about his dad working too much.

Walking over, Kohaku set his paper in his dad’s chair and pushed it aside, crouching down and counting the drawers before pulling the third one. Inside was large sheets of white paper and Kohaku cheered, taking out two before he shut the drawer.

“Hey Papa?”

“Hm?”

Kohaku picked up the depiction of his family tree. There was something that was a little unusual to him about this. His grandma Mukuro was like a mom to his Aunt Yukina and his papa but she wasn’t their mom. And while he couldn’t really get the difference, it had to be something important.

“What happened to your mom?”

Peering around the corner of his dad’s desk, he saw his papa standing quietly with a few of his dad’s books in hand. He wasn’t staring at anything particular and Kohaku stepped behind the desk when he glanced his way. Something trembled and ached inside when he saw the look on his papa’s face. This sad look that made his eyes shimmer as if he was going to cry but he couldn’t, and his lips press together in a frown. He knew that his papa frowned sometimes but he liked his smiles a lot better, or when he smirked.

Regretting asking, Kohaku glanced down at his feet.

The books were shelved and his papa approached, his looming shadow blocking the sunlight filtered through the curtains. Kohaku kept his eyes on his feet, clutching his paper tightly til it crinkled in his hands, the twisting feeling in his stomach making him feel cold from the inside out. A heavy weight settled on his head and he glanced up, feeling his papa pat his head then smooth back his hair.

“… She died a long time ago,” his papa says, in a quiet little voice that sounds sadder than Kohaku ever heard him talk before.

“And you miss her,” Kohaku points out, his papa glancing away toward the window.

“Sometimes.”

Another thing that he didn’t quite understand. How could he only miss her sometimes?

Even when his dad went away to work or when his papa had to leave for patrols, he missed them a whole lot. Maybe it would be something he’d get when he was older but for right now, he was little and he didn’t get it at all.

“Papa?”

“Mm?”

“If you died, I would miss you a lot..”

His papa looked at him and he said nothing for a long while but then he smiled, a soft little sad smile, picking him up in his arms and pressing a kiss to his cheek. Kohaku wasn’t sure what he did to make his papa smile but it was worth it as he carried him out of his dad’s office, shutting the door behind him.

“I would miss you too,” his papa says, and Kohaku felt more loved than ever.

how’d you find it: ok so like when i was 6 or 7, i had this friend that would come over and watch anime with me and in the evenings, all the violent anime would air on Bionix and we thought it was so rebellious to watch Older Kid anime so we would watch it every week and one week inuyasha came on and it was the episode where he got absolutely impaled by a demon tree (which is like every other episode) and i was so scared that i cried. anyways thats my first memory of inuyasha and i havent stopped watching it since, i love that show so much my dudes

random thoughts: what can i even say? this show was my entire life. it still is my entire life!! when i first discovered it in first grade. then in third grade i developed a big fat crush on inuyasha. in sixth grade, i was teased and was so embarrassed by it that i stopped watching the anime and reading the manga. in tenth grade when i heard affections touching across time and i was hit with such a strong wave of nostalgia that i binged the entire series that month. and then when i watch the very last episode and i cried because this show that had been with me my entire life just ended and it left such a big hole in my heart. i dont always talk about it but i will never stop loving this show and its dumb characters and its ability to lift my mood no matter what, its my absolute fave.

y'know im thinking about how kuwabara really only calls yusuke by his first name when he's talking to other characters about yusuke, and how he never claims yusuke's his best friend (iirc. although yusuke does in the eng dub when he's beating him up post dt toguro fight lol) and those times he trails off when he's trying to express what yusuke is to him and what his final words to him should be

my point is he skirts around the issue in ways that still reveal a great deal of emotion. he's not good at bottling it up, so he funnels it into stuff like this. yeah 👍

wait nvm im not done im also thinking about how yusuke tells keiko he's protective of kuwabara when he's about to do the bike chase in chapter black (STOP MESSING WITH MY GIRLFRIEND), which is partially bc he (like the rest of the team) doesn't see him as equally capable but also bc like. he loves him and wants him to be safe.

so there's this THING where they only ever express their feelings when the other's in trouble/presumed dead ("you're supposed to be here... for me....." sir this is a wake) but yusuke is still more bluntly honest about it than kuwabara is. he'll say kuwabara's his best friend while beating him up or that he's protective of kuwa when he's not around, but he still says it very directly. whereas kuwa can't quite get it out even when yusuke can't hear him (but he's still trying to reach him, i.e. the wake scene, the kuwabara agony hour when he's trying to convince him not to die to sensui). he can't quite say what yusuke means to him, more like.. conceptual things. you're supposed to be here for me = a statement on how the world should be and the essence/role of yusuke in it, especially regarding his purpose in kuwabara's life story. there's nothing wrong with guys needing each other = a statement on how the world works and, indirectly, how kuwa needs yusuke.

[this is kinda interesting when taken in context of kuwa's rejection of these notions of rules and designed paths, which allows him to escape itsuki's creature just in time to watch urameshi kick it again. "what the hell could be the reason for this?" (said after protesting that "it doesn't fit the rules", that he's supposed to "power up and save the day" seeing him hurt) is a rejection of the rules that he tried to express/justify his feelings for yusuke with (it's only natural that i'd feel this way about you kinda sentiment), those justifications that did not reach yusuke, nor let him save yusuke (how fitting, that yusuke would break those rules for him). ANYWAY]

contrast all that indirectness (also include things like him sacrificing his life energy to save yusuke post-suzaku fight, literally giving his life for him) with how yusuke blurts these things out directly because he's panicking. his indirectness is more in urging him to let him help during fights and preparing to intervene (a trait we see with kurama as well, though only during the bakken fight when he's literally unconscious and thus helpless) despite being threatened by kuwa himself, meaning interference could damage their friendship.

anyway my point is men will say anything Except that they're madly in love with their best friend slash rival 🙄🙄🙄 good thing yusuke's not a man phew

prev your tags are mighty and true also YEAH i love team urameshi i love them also the thought that yusuke is to kuwa as toguro is to genkai (as well as itsuki is to sensui what kuwa is to yusuke) IS SO FUKING. GRRRGRRGAGOUH the way they couldve been tragic lovers separated by their differences and one's inability to face their fears OR codependent to the point of enabling the darkest and unhealthiest parts of them in this entropic sorta way is just. GUH. HOUGHGHNGH!!!!! also yeah when i rewatched a lotta the yusuke leaving stuff i was like man he really DOES feel like he's breaking up with the both of them. and their different reactions are so interesting to me like keiko being like :/ i don't think my new bf would like it if we got married and stuff and yusuke's yk ily :) and her yeah me too :/ bc she's trying not to get her hopes up bc yusuke really does let her down a lot and she has every reason to not believe his promises when he's made them a million times before and broken them almost every time. vs kuwabara losing his absolute goose off his gourd desperate and yusuke not chewing him out for it at all but explaining his reasons and insisting he's going and when kuwa starts lashing out at the others pulling him aside and promising he'll be back. there's a lotta overlap with his treatment of keiko and kuwa here but kuwa's reaction is so different to keiko's and the way yusuke acted when kuwa was trying to say what he means to him just.. gaougugohhohghh basically

AND YEAH the kuwa can speak violence but it's yusuke and hiei's native language is literally shit i've been saying for years omg we are big brained. yusuke and hiei were both born outcasts assumed to be dangerous, corruptive, impure, etc, and they both leaned into it to some extent, for their physical and emotional survival. i imagine kuwabara grew up with similar prejudices, but he took a different approach in rising above them via honor code stuff. he looked to how a man should be (often taking influence from pop culture, it seems) and tried to be that to prove them wrong, to be good in spite of what others said, rather than being bad to spite them (hiei + yusuke). and sorry to kurama for leaving him out but we dunno enough about his upbringing sorry man <3 anyway yeah it's such a key point of communication for yusuke and hiei and while it also is for kuwa it's not like,, NEARLY as hard for kuwa to talk about his feelings. anyway they make me insasne. that point about hiei and yusuke bringing out the worst and best in each other AGAIN ginormous brain moment but like the way yusuke talks to hiei when they have the post-sniper fight encounter and yusuke's like ouhhh you're a softyyy like. i think yusuke is almost the gentlest with hiei in some ways. when he asks him in this kinda tentative quiet way if he'll help after coming all this way (so he KNOWS hiei cares and hiei can't deny it) it's like he's trying to teach him some of that language of. not hitting each other. it doesn't go great but it doesn't go horribly either. (maybe it doesn't go great bc he brings up kuwabara, and hiei's like >:/ oh right ugh this is such a kuwabara thing to do being all. open about feelings and shit. gross. and it reminds him of vulnerability being a bad idea and he's like nope shutting that down now moment's over. but yusuke makes it easier to forget that.) ugh the yusuke hiei dynamic makes me absolutely stupid and contrasting it with the kuwa yusuke dynamic is just. scrumptious. bc they really are the shoulder human shoulder demon to him a lotta the time. anyway YEAH but also at the same time hiei and yusuke fall into the pessimistic let's watch the world burn shit a lot easier together than with any of the others because they share a bitterness and a hurt and a mistrust that the other two don't. kurama's too practical and schemey to be a pessimist (too focused on how to make good outcomes happen to worry about how unlikely they are, which is the only way to survive for that long) and kuwabara's so focused on narrative/the ways things "should" be/unable to let himself think of bad outcomes because it'd crush him bc he's sensitive yk to be a pessimist. b'yeah

also yeah i WISH yusuke and genkai were a little sweeter than they were in canon but i also think that distance is like. captivating in its painfulness, much like a lotta the show's relationships. just tender enough to drive you nuts but not quite enough to satisfy anything. it leaves you hungry and aching like the characters themselves who are all starved for affection and GOD DAMN. ANYWAY
