brief musing of a commander as cane user. inspired by a tumblrpost about letting ppl create a cane user in fiction

- i went with painted phoenix. after losing their wings yunran would use a cane to help with balance and coordination, but in the beginning they needs to save money/mercenary payment so they acquired a giant tree branch, cut off its branches, and managed to use it as intended

- possibly loses the branch when meeting jamie, or if they has put it in a resting place / shelter before meeting him. during the month-long travel with vethna, the mage buys a better looking cane as a surprise gift. it is likely really luxurious looking. probably the gold got rusted overtime.

- now i think about it, for practical reasons, the queens confiscate it after finding the commander at the parade & much of the balancing is just taken care of with the fact they’re escorted around as a prisoner. a new and better designed one with built-in sword awaits them in the meeting room - but considering the way marcelle is, it might also have some uses not known to commander for her needs.

(disregard the lil pic where syfyn carries them; idk why i thought it'd make sense it does not) (they're not having the cane back so it's just syfyn escorting them after the trial)

- considering all commander types have difficulties with coordination post-surgery (recall Interlude in chapter 4), i don’t think it’s far off. the surgery’s shown to take a huge toll on them so the possibilities might be many. i hc taking away their wings fucks up their sense of balance and coordination and the body pains, which necessitates the use of a stick to aid with walking.

pre exile - the commander is kindhearted to anyone else except their enemies — after all enemies of plaithus need to be ridden — and they hope for their apprentice to do the same to be the fitting commander.

before the trial she decided on something ordinary - a black shirt - and something secure - a vest red as according to the Phoenix’s motif, of sturdy, fine fabric, hard to the touch enough to deel like an armor. last went dark pants, belts, and boots out of habit. all of them still failed to stave off the stare from the audience when she was brought to court, but at least no guilty conscience was needed. she did not ask for attention.

child yunran is more serious and likes pranks less but it doesn’t take long to goad her into it, and she gets pissed at some pranks directed toward her

it’s funny how my commander is similar to syfyn. honest to a fault and dutiful in her job, afraid to challenge authority, and prefers familiarity which is a big reason why she’s not inclined to deepen her relationships and vethna and amilia

and both are kinda emotionally constipated. yuran just wants to be efficient and solve problems and stops caring if she cant, while syfyn is like “emotions? who”
