Can we talk a little about this scene ? Because since the beginning of the anime, I’ve had a feeling that the showrunners are framing Yuna and Fina’s relationship as the usual “hero x main girl” trope in which the hero and main girl are usually implied to have romantic feelings for one another that develop over the course of the story, leading to an actual romantic relationship after the end of the series.
I feel that way because of multiple small hints that have been given to us throughout the anime, but also because of a few elements from the manga and LN. I’m not going to quote them all, but the way Fina reacts to seeing Yuna with her hood down for the first time (thinking “She’s beautiful” and being a bit stunned by it), the opening and especially the ending sequence where Fina is clearly shown to be special to Yuna compared to all the other people she meets in Crimonia, one of the LN covers where they are particularly close (Yuna never being drawn so close to another character, I believe), etc.
And this question, as well as the scene following it, were the last drop, if you will. Asking two people what kind of relationship they have is usually seen when those two people are very close, more than expected, and oftentimes it is used when a third party wonders if the two people in question are dating. Noa’s confusion and growing shock in the following conversation reinforces this sentiment (though at the end, it seems it is all focused on how Fina already knows Kumakyuu and Kumayuru more than her actual relationship with Yuna, but still). Now, that might be my own bias talking, but the scene following the question reinforces this feeling for me.
Yuna and Fina both talk fondly about their first meeting and how they both saved each other in turn, they give each other soft looks (especially Yuna) and their cheeks are a bit rosy in that last shot, where they admit to being close friends, whereas Noa’s cheeks are their usual coloration and serve as contrast for the other two. On top of that, a soft music is playing in the background and Noa’s shock, once again, plays into the idea that Yuna and Fina’s relationship is much closer than would be expected from an outside view.
It seems like I’m grasping at straws, but the straw is there and there was no reason for the showrunners to put it in the episode. They could have just gone from the scene at the mansion to the scene of the girls riding the bears and have Noa say “So you two work together ?”, implying Yun and Fina explained their relationship at the beginning of the trip and transition into Noa declaring Fina her bear rival without having to show us all the small hints of Yuna and Fina’s relationship being oh so special. So if they put it there, it’s intentional and serves a purpose.
It’s obvious that Yuna and Fina’s relationship is very special to both of them, but the way it’s framed makes it feel more like it’s a “could potentially bloom into romance” kind of relationship than a “sisterly” relationship. Maybe because Fina is usually shown as an equal to Yuna instead of a younger girl looking up to our hero and wanting to follow her example ? Even in this scene, the fact that they both mention being saved by the other and that their work relationship is mutually beneficial show that they are on equal footing. Yuna is stronger, has incredible magic and wealth as well as knowledge from a foreign land, but she wouldn’t be able to work efficiently without Fina, who also shared her knowledge of this world with Yuna and continues to do so daily. At the same time, Yuna helped Fina and her family out since her first day in Crimonia, but Fina always made sure to work for the help she received, so Yuna is her benefactor, but not someone she feels endebted to, just grateful for.
This turned into more musings than intended, but to sum it up, I think the anime is trying to imply that Yuna and Fina’s relationship is closer to that of the usual “hero x main girl” relationship than to a sisterly relationship, and the showrunners must be doing so knowingly because there’s an accumulation of small hints that are usually associated with potentially romantic relationships. Now, the question would be “is it queerbaiting ? loli-lovers baiting ? actually heading somewhere ?” and to those questions, the answer will only come with time.
