Finished Yumimi Mix Remix (Saturn)!

It's a cute, early CD gaming visual novel about a schoolgirl turning into a unicorn girl to fight monsters. It's pretty short, clocking in at about 2 hours if you want to see everything, but the sprite-based animation is jaw-dropping - it was released on Mega CD rather than PC Engine CD like most games of its illk, and the technical bump really shows. It geniunely feels like an anime on console! It also still has a lot of really good jokes - especially love the running gag of Sakurako suddenly eating a different meal with every shot and no one bringing it up.

Not much else to say, really! It's a harmless and fun adventure that I'd highly recommend if you love the look.

Also, lesbians.

Based on a similar engine that Game Arts used to make the Mega CD game of the same title comes the Saturn version of Yumimi Mix, dubbed Yumimi Mix Remix. The idea of the game is to play out the life of Yumimi in an interactive comic book style of gameplay. 

While the animation is not a patch on the 1994 Mega CD game (Urusei Yatsura Dear My Friends) which uses a more advanced version of this game engine, it still looks ok. Well, it would as long as you play it before Game Arts' other Yumimi game Daina Airan which is also available for the Saturn.

This special edition box set comes in a very nice slipcase which contains another box that looks like a book. Once that is opened you find a beautiful artwork book along with the game.

this game is so pretty!!!! Izumi Takemoto’s artstyle is so cute too 😭 too bad this game is locked away in japan only, my favorite thing about this game is that it takes advantage of the saturn’s 2D power its all sprite animation no FMV whatsoever which is really cool!!

I hope it gets the same treatment as yumimi mix which got fantranslated this year I think :o

i don't really think this one counts as a "game," per se (i'd most easily call it sort of an interactive OVA), but i figured it's close enough for the purposes of this blog and i wanted to get a post out on here anyways, considering i haven't been playing a ton of single player stuff lately.

anyways, i really enjoyed this! it's very very cute and not quite like anything else (other than the sega cd version this is a port of and its spiritual sequel, dinosaur Island, anyways) - there's no FMV here, just sprites and background layers working together to make a fully voice acted animated adventure with interactivity with simple choices that impact your ending. maybe a sort of motion visual novel, then. regardless of what it is, it's very unique and cute and a pleasure to spend a couple hours on. credit to the folks behind the fan translation that's excellent and professional looking. i'll be revisiting it to check out the other endings, and looking forward to the possibility of an eventual dinosaur island translation. it's nice to stream to some friends on discord too (as i did with my girlfriend.) give it a look!

i don't know when regular posts will be coming back to thunderjolt - i have a couple projects cooking right now that will probably land in other places, and my interest in single player games is fairly low right now for whatever reason. rest assured i will continuing blogging into eternity.
