Yukai Karra, a boy with the rare ability to create new cards from old ones, is in danger. when a group of baddies want his power, it's up to Yugi, Yuma, Yusei, Jaden, Yuya, yusaku, and Yukai himself to stop this threat. but with things like horny trickstars, psycotic dragons and the gods themselves seeing this as a comedic soap opera, it'll be harder that it's supposed to be... and why are the other cast members of the series watching this too?

Unfortunately these ship names are necessary. Due to how long the franchise has been around for and the name differences in the sub and dub, smooshing names together gets too messy.

There are just too many characters with similar names. Most of the lead girls start with A, there are at least three characters named Ryo/Ryou/Rio, and obviously there are at least 11 major characters who's names start with Yu. Ect ect. If we used the usual portmanteau naming scheme, would "YuKai" mean "yugi/kaiba" or "yuma/kaito"? Thinking about Arc-V, "YuYu" could refer to a ridiculous number of ships.

And then the dub messes things up further. What would we call the portmanteau between yugi and Tea/Anzu? that's two entirely different names, and half the fandom uses one and half the other. Do we risk having two separate portmanteaus? Do we risk possibly doubling what will already be a large list of ship names just to accommodate people who prefer subs or dubs?

The number system like Hitman Reborn fandom might have been viable back in DM days, but now there's far too many characters.

Using the current Xshipping system is by no means perfect. Most obviously it does take a bit of memorizing, but that's what ship lists are for.

I've always been extremely proud and impressed that not only has the fandom curated these lists for literal decades, but we often have civilized votes on what a ship will be called. Or at least we did back in zexal/Arc-V times; not sure if we're still doing it.

And the ship names arent chosen at random, there is always a reason for their name, something connecting the two characters or describing their relationship. We make do as best we can.

(it's not an entirely uncommon practice either. Pokemon fandom has the same system for the same reasons, and mcyt fandom uses loosely the same thing for platonic groups and duos.)

I say this with as much love as I can but,

Pegasus and Seto have reconciled in YnY but Seto basically treats Pegasus like his annoying and slightly estranged big brother after the fact (mostly because that’s easier to cope with than “I used to have a crush/hero-crush on this guy and he absolutely trampled over my trust and stabbed me in the back, the rat bastard, and now he seems to have adopted me and I don’t know what the hell to do with that”)

Thing is that right now YnY is effectively at an impasse or whatever you wanna call it bc like, I don't want to abandon it but there's

There's a lot to consider now, like I can't just pick it back up without doing so

But also there's this inherent annoyance about picking up a fanwork you started planning in 2003 where ppl are like, never gonna look at time stamps and you're either going to get people criticizing 10 year old art or story decisions made when you were a different or less educated person (god) or ppl asking how something that didn't even exist till just recently fits in (it doesn't, DSoD simply never happened in the YnY verse bc I haven't publicly worked on it since before dsod was announced)

(I've had people ask why something didn't fit with ygotas and I don't think they were actually joking, insert Mr Incredible "I'm not strong enough" gif here)

Part of me wants to summarize Game of Dreams and just move on to the fucking nexgen

But also I got kind of trapped, being known for YnY on DA. I used to follow a lot of self imposed rules I don't even agree with anymore (like using dub names for everyone consistently) but more than that if I wanted to play with something else I had to deal with the expectations of the YnY readership, who were and are all wonderful lovely people but some of whom didn't understand that sometimes a person can ship multiple things in different universes, for example

(I'm not talking about anyone here. None of you to my knowledge left comments like "but I thought you shipped x" or "but how does this reflect on YnY" on art posted to the GDG account. It did happen, though, and fair or not, it made me feel pressured to stay in lines I hadn't intended to draw for myself. There's even a whole unrelated nexgen with all different ships that I never shared bc of this.)

But I've never wanted to just abandon it. I think I learned as much or more about doing comics as I have from LOP. Yukai is my angry baby boy. There's a lot that was just very cathartic for me.

Anyway I'm really just venting in hopes of finding direction. I know if I pick it back up the friends I made through it will be happy whatever I do and if I don't they'll also understand. I have a ton of other shit to do. Some of you have no idea what any of this is and would be perfectly happy if all I ever did again was draw Kaiba carrying nexgen babies around on his shoulders.

Whatever I do, it's not going to result in a page going up tomorrow, that's for sure, so I should stop agonizing and get on with my day.

OK for context there's a blog post on the old Yukai no Yugi blogspot blog going into the ships for the comic because I don't like to spoil ships in ensemble cast fics but people kept asking Someone commented on it just to complain about the different array of people Tea sorta dates over the course of Game of Dreams And I just wanted to say That Is Rude Don't Do That Shit

Incidentally I like... HALF finished a transcript of the first little bit of Game of Dreams (a longish yugioh fancomic I don't always talk about here that's been on hiatus for a while because I thought I should get LOP in order) but have come to the conclusion that I'm a little TOO close to the story so I'm going to try to redo it and maybe post to ao3 (I haven't decided what to do with the two separate mirrors for the DA posting, one was the original reason I got my Comic Fury account and the other is a sideblog attached to this Tumblr, which is where you can find part of the original partial transcript at @yukaimotou ) All of this will take a little while to get started for obvious reasons *gestures at My Life* but I think a GD transcript would be a good way to get back to working on it when I'm ready.

I did not expect soccer to be yet another thing Kaiba and Yukai would have in common but it's official, Seto’s trying to make off with Yugi and Tea's kid (which Tea only REALLY minds when he buys Yukai a motorcycle) (Yugi doesn't mind at all he thinks it's adorable)

But I am SERIOUSLY thinking about changing my mind to “Kimono Gown” because first of all it still would have similar benefits and HOLY SHIT aren’t they the most beautiful thing?

I used to say this more often but the majority of my yugioh AUs are largely free open concepts I'm fine with all y'all running with because I am never gonna have time to pursue all of them fully

The major exceptions are my take on the remix reboot concept (too specific), the Different Dimensional Warrior comic (too specific) and that big ass nexgen I was doing on deviantart, Yukai no Yugi (also too specific, Yukai is my son)

Note the common thread there, I did actual writing on all of those instead of outline sketches

We can blame both sides for that one, the reason I liked her mother so much is because the first thing she does in her introductory story is slap Duke in the face and yell at him for never emailing her.  XD

Jade... is a little more reserved than both of them, come to think of it.

You know, you’re absolutely right, and it’s kind of hilarious because if you take out all the familial bonding stuff that makes the Kaiba Brothers who they are, that’s sort of her role to Kira, that snarky tagalong with black hair (she won’t carry Kira’s purse even if Kira makes puppy eyes, though.)
