Zexal Month 2021 - Week 1

I feel like i have been doing @zexalmonth for many years and I don’t really have anything new or interesting to say besides saying I want to work on the same fanfic I have been saying I have wanted to work on for several years but only ever make minimal progress on. But I still want to participate. So I am condensing all of week 1 into 1 post that I will keep short, sweet, and to the point!

Day 1 = Who are you? Introduce yourself! When did you get into Zexal? What Fandom are you in at the moment?

I am Kevin Jeremy Ross, known online as VoiceOfChaos. I livestreamed Zexal during the end of its run, written a few fanfics, and have cosplayed Yuma, Kaito, Shark, and Nasch at anime conventions around the Midwest USA. I started with Zexal when the fansubs first came out but I know episode 33 was when my interest in it spiked! Then later around the time of Zexal II I discovered the livestreams and I fell deep the fandom rabbit hole. I’m always in more fandoms than I can count but I will say I am enjoying Sevens and if anything I feel like people rejecting Sevens will make people brushed off Zexal before will give it another chance.

Day 2: Who would you be in Zexal? Champion? Alien? Tomato? Alternatively, what part of Heartland City’s society do you find interesting?

Umm, that is a good question LOL I would love to be a card designer but I guess in Zexal that would mean having Reconstruct Universe teeheehee. Something I find interesting about Heartland is that dueling is very important to life there but we do see that not all aspects of life revolve around dueling like in other Yugioh series. Some of the more plot-heavy episodes, especially the earlier ones, have a lot of side-characters who are not duelists. It adds a strange unexpected level of realism to Zexal that is missing from other Yugioh series.

Day 3: What’s your favourite moment or favourite episode in the series?

It is probably cliché or at least a popular answer but favorite episode is 80. Yes for all the reasons most people like, Alit’s flaming bisexuality, Angel Yuma, and just the amazing humor! But my actual favorite part of the episode is the fact that Yuma won the duel by not listening to Astral and would have lost if he did. This is such a giant level-up moment for Yuma that haters overlook when they say Yuma is a bad duelist because Astral does all the work. I honestly think someone who has never watched Zexal before can enjoy episode 80 all by itself! Some of my favorite moments from the whole series though seem to have a running theme. The finale of the Yuma VS Nasch duel, Yuma trying to save Vector from being absorbed, and Yuma trying to save Tron from being absorbed. These really stand out as moments that show Yuma’s strength of character and why he stands out as a main protagonist different from the rest. His ability to empathize with his enemies is amazing and respectable.!

Day 4: Who’s your favourite character? Which Zexal Characters would you like to meet?

I mean as you can already tell from this, I love Yuma a lot! But on the flip side I also love Vector a lot for all the many emotional reactions he caused. He is such a great blend of a villain, able to wear many hats from comic relief to genuinely terrifying. I’m not sure I would want to meet any of them as they are all really crazy LOL III might be cool to chill with. Alit seems like he would be a lot of fun. Anna would be dangerous but might a wild adventure. And I have a soft spot for Cathy.

Day 5: Zexal has so many cool locations and backdrops. Where would you want to go in Zexal?

Not Astral World or Barian World. They look pretty but are probably really dangerous and not much to actually do. Same with the Number ruins too. So just Heartland City. I’m a city person (who lives in the suburbs) so I would love just explorign all the technological marvels of Heartland!

about two weeks ago maybe by now, i made a post about how i’ve recently hit 200 followers and i’d like to do a q&a again, and even with a reblog from someone more ~*popular*~ than me, and multiple reblogs once a day for a few days by myself, i didn’t get a single fucking question. not one. earlier today i posted two pictures of myself where i felt pretty (i’ve since deleted them) and nobody i actually know of liked it and i got asked by a stranger who doesn’t even follow me if i had any nsfw pictures. i don’t get asks anymore, i don’t get shit. and that tells me that, you may be following me, but you aren’t connecting with me. and i feel that. i get on tumblr and i don’t feel like i’m friends with fucking anybody. and i did that. i know i did that. 9/10 times i let my fear of rejection and embarrassing myself overcome my desire to talk to people, so i don’t do it, or i let it fizzle out and we go our own ways and we don’t become friends. 1/10 times i actually function as a human being and make a connection or at least something that sticks a little.

i also read a book about the lusitania by the same author and i was like ohhh my goooood what. it got a little boring sometimes, i had to push myself to keep going, but i would read dead wake again.

i am trying to get into comic books by way of the youtube channel comicstorian. they break comic books down for you and read them aloud with the images, altered slightly to avoid copyright strikes (and that’s all made very clear, it’s not done sketchily), and it’s been really easy for someone like me who doesn’t just have a comics store close (and i would otherwise continue on as i have been, forgetting to ever look for them on the internet). i listened to injustice 1 and 2, and they covered the game. i’m actively following scooby apocalypse, and there was some teen titans stuff i went all the way through up until now. i don’t think it’s finished yet from what i remember.

01. How did you find out about anime? Just happened upon it watching TV, mostly on WB Kids I think? My first anime was Sailor Moon, which I watched religiously and adored, but didn't really know anime was a separate media from western cartoons. This trend followed for the dubs of Pokemon, Cardcaptors, Digimon and Yugioh. When I was a little bit older I became aware that these were all the same category, and I sought out time slots that offered anime on YTV, and also watched Inuyasha, Case Closed (Detective Conan), .hack//SIGN, FMA, Eureka Seven, Gundam Seed, Mew Mew Power (Tokyo Mew Mew) and more things that cropped up with these but those ones I remember best from that time. The first anime I sought out online to watch subbed was Bleach in highschool, after a friend showed me the old bleachportal site for torrenting or downloading the new episodes, after which I watched a lot more AND became aware of manga available online, and dove into reading Fairy Tail, Naruto, One Piece, Elfen Lied, Black Cat, and from there I was trapped in the addictions.

02. What’s your favorite anime? This is a hard question just because I have a hard time singling out favourites for anything. Fullmetal Alchemist is my favourite manga and I do quite love both animes, the first for nostalgia of when I was introduced to it, some of the episodes, the OPs/EDs, and I really loved seeing Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood bring characters I adored in the manga, like Ling Yao get their moment to shine in animated form. Plus the way the manga and the new anime ended almost together was so great of a build, it was fantastic reading and watching alongside, being hype to see something you just read be animated mere weeks later near the end. I also adore Baccano! as a shorter series, and one I hadn't expected to like but ended up loving when my uni anime club watched it. It's zany and told in a fun format, and not that long which makes it a fun rewatch. Eureka Seven and Soul Eater are old faves that no longer hold the title but have a special place for me as the first two series I cosplayed from, with Anemone and Black Star respectively. Movie wise, Promare. Promare is easily my favourite anime movie, and I still adore thinking up aus and content for it, as well as seeking out the fandom. It's the art, the characters, the dynamic! Special shout out as well to Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, which I come back to often as comfort movies, and Belle which I saw recently and enjoyed! Honourable mentions: Steins;Gate, Tiger & Bunny, .hack//SIGN, Cowboy Bebop 03. Do you have a favorite J-music/K-pop group/singer? So I don't really listen to a lot of bands/singers specifically, I find songs and cling to them and add them to my playlists forever. That means most of the J-music I have is indeed the stereotypical music from openings and endings in animes. I will say the ones I have multiple songs from and actually sought out other tracks from not in animes are UVERworld and yui. The second Bleach Opening with UVERworld got me good, okay. I can sing that shit acapella, and again from yui I needed to hear the full track after seeing the goregous FMA brotherhood opening.

04. When is your bday? And how old are you? June 8th, 30 right now 05. Currently, what is your favorite fandom anime? Given the huge rundown I gave before I'm going to limit this to newer things I'm checking out, not necessarily all time faves. I enjoyed Toilet-bound Hanako-kun's first season a lot and am excited for a second! My sister keeps trying to get me to read the manga, and it is really pretty so I might. I'm checking out Case Study of Vanitas because I used to really love the Pandora Hearts manga, but I'm considering switching to reading over watching. Akudama Drive was fun, I checked it out since it was the DR game writer. Really out of left field since it's not my usual genre, but I just watched Zombieland Saga and I loved it, it was hilarious. Need some more humour based series now and then, not everything's gotta be heavy hahaha. Jujutsu Kaisen's fun, reminds me a lot of my Bleach phase. None of these unseat my other faves, and I have a lot of videogame fandoms I am more heavily into over them right now (Danganronpa, Zero Escape, Umineko, AITSF, Steins;Gate (again)) but I'm still checking out lots of new animes as they come, and more genres than before since my sister's back into it and prefers some other stuff and wants to chat about it. 06. Despite the ups and downs of Tumblr, what motivates you to stay here today and do your best? The working tag system? The chronological order timeline? The fact that I can type more in a single post instead of having to make long threads? The fact that I've been here over a decade and you'd have to give me an official eviction to get off? Unpopular opinion maybe, but tumblr is one of the better social media ish sites for art displaying and sharing, I came here from deviantart, I hate instagram, I am on twitter but mostly because you kind of have to be in this day and age. Tumblr is probably the only site like this I like, I used to be a fan forum kid, but those are fewer and far between, and I've outgrown gaiaonline for sure. It's just a good site build here. 07. Finally create it yourself in this picrew: Link Mmmmm not the best time I've had in a picrew but I sort of managed to get it close. Really always trouble that no streak options go all the way to the root and that there's only ever two glasses shapes that aren't shades.

TEXT OF ARTICLE: They're called the Amazon Trio, but they're not a trio made up of Kamen Rider Amazon, Electric Amazon and Amazon X.*** However, Shihomi Etsuko once starred in a movie. The Amazoness Seven (♀) who appeared in "Sister Street Fighter" are also completely unrelated. There are three hunters working under Zirconia, who's after the illusory Pegasus who hides in humans' beautiful dreams. That is the Amazon Trio.

(***Electric Amazon seems to be from a show called Super Robot Red Baron. I can't find anything about Amazon X.

I remember debate about whether to translate アマゾネス as Amazoness or Amazons, considering that Amazons were female warriors with no need to feminize the word. However, I think Amazoness is now standard within the series for the Quartet, and I've seen it used in other series like Yugioh.)

They each bring with them their own Lemures, shadowy circus members designed for combat. These are to deal with targets that fell through and interfering Sailor Soldiers. Each one of them a disgrace to Japanese men. At present, the one on the front line of developing plans to capture Pegasus is Tigerseye. Is that because the main target is young maidens, who are full of dreams? Every time he gets close to the target wearing some fool disguise, but it's almost a "Useless Hoichi" situation.***

(***Earless Hoichi is a story about a blind minstrel who was covered with a sutra to make him invisible, but his ears were forgotten, leaving them fully visible.)

It really looks like he's just having fun with cosplay. Mmm, yeah, that's a problem. Anyway, the part that really concerns us is that pretty-boy-killer, Fisheye. Out of the three, that seems like the one you've got to keep an eye on.

CAPTION ON THE TRIO AT THE BAR: This is where the three of them hang out to relax, so it's also called the Amazon Bar. This is an idea characteristic of Ikuhara-san, who likes to project his own hobbies and preferences onto his characters.

TRICK A: The Kogal/Pickup Artist Tactic

Trick number 18 from Tigerseye, the member of the Trio with the highest concentration of narcissism. A selfish tactic where he reels the girl in with his good looks while saying things like, "You're the ideal girl I've been looking for!" The second he sees that it's not working, he reveals himself and switches to the offensive. He's single-minded in the extreme. What's more, even this tamer of wild animals is at a loss before the formidable Kogal?

TRICK B: The Madame-Killer Tactic

Giving the old coochy-coo to the target's maternal instincts, this is the specialty strategy of Hawkseye, he of the undeniable mother complex. Pouring on the pathos, he spins rapid absurd lies, one after the other, the length and breadth of old Edo.*** Maybe he's just that "psychopath" thing that's been trendy recently...

(NOTE: ***八百夜町 is used here. This seems to be a reference to 八百八町, an old name for Edo/Tokyo. I can't tell if it's a joke or just a typo, because 夜 and 八 would be read in the same way here.)

Anyway, whether it's his high heels or his hairstyle, he definitely has the most "out there" fashion sense in the Trio.

Trick C: The Pretty-Boy Sweet-Talking Tactic

Disguising himself as a girl and toying with the sound heart and mind dwelling in a pretty boy's sound body: this is a perverted technique characteristic of Fisheye. Full of criticisms when it comes to Tigerseye and Hawkseye's taste, Fisheye has yet to show off his own skill, but his method of approaching the target is the most intense, so we can anticipate some moments that are, shall we say, suspicious. Also, maybe he'll go swimming in that weird outfit that looks like the Michelin mascot?
