Making Mozart's favorite musical sound more widely heard in China
Making Mozart's favorite musical sound more widely heard in China
In China, the fortepiano is not as widely known as the piano. Wang Yuehan, who was awarded a performer's certificate by the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, has been devoting her time to the promotion of the historical instrument in China for years. By performing on a replica of an 1805 Walter fortepiano, Wang aims to present Mozart's favorite sound to a much wider audience. To get more news about fortepiano, you can visit shine news official website.
At the ancient Zhizhu Temple in Beijing, Wang Yuehan presented how the Western instrument was performed some two hundred years ago. "Mozart would never have known that so many years later, his work would be played in such a venue. What makes it all the more magical is that the instrument I use recreates the sound that Mozart loved most, " explains Wang.
The sound that cheered Mozart also thrilled the audience members at Wang's concert. "I had seen fortepianos in museums when I traveled abroad, but this is the first time I have heard it played," says one audience member. "I think it makes a more restrained sound than modern pianos."
"I think Wang Yuehan is the first Chinese musician to play Mozart's music on the fortepiano. It seems that she brought Mozart to us, which is very exciting," says another audience member. And the ancient temple also added to the glamor of Wang's performance. "I have always wanted to play the fortepiano at a small venue. The composers of the music I play also performed in venues as small as this one, in a room measuring just one or two hundred square meters, for a small group of people. Today's venue is especially reminiscent of that time," says Wang.
Wang Yuehan graduated from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and received a master's degree in both piano and early music. She is currently just one of a handful of musicians in China who have studied fortepiano and regularly perform on the instrument. With a profound love for what she has learned, Wang has traveled to many Chinese cities with her fortepiano to share the instrument with music lovers. "Most of the time, when I coordinate with people, even those working in different concert halls, the first thing I have to do is explain what fortepianos are," Wang says.
What are fortepianos? Wang explains: "When the piano was first invented, it was very different from what it is today. In the process of development, it appeared in different forms, with different looks and different mechanical designs. We call those pianos in history fortepianos." Born in the 1990s, Wang Yuehan started learning to play the piano at the age of four, soon revealing her talent. She was admitted to the middle school attached to her hometown's Wuhan Conservatory of Music at the age of 12. Since then, she has devoted her time to becoming a pianist. "After college, I applied to Indiana University in the United States, and enrolled as a modern piano major," says Wang.
She chose fortepiano as an elective course, and made it her major before too long. In 2015, a performer's certificate was awarded to Wang in recognition of her outstanding musical ability on the fortepiano.
Back in China, when she's not practicing the fortepiano, Wang is usually at her desk researching music history. She says the market for fortepiano in China is relatively small at the moment, with few people taking up the instrument. But she is still doing her best to promote the fortepiano.

MY HONOURABLE MENTIONS IN YOUTH WITH YOU 3
This list consists of trainees who were on my list but were unfortunately eliminated or just me preferring other trainees in the top 9. In no particular order I quickly realised it was in their rank order:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LIANG SEN
Before you come at me for this, let me explain. I love that he’s a triple threat, and I enjoyed his performance especially “jade” as he was the perfect center for that song in my opinion. The reason why I chose other contestants over him in my final list is because I feel like he would shine more if he was a solo artist as supposed to being in a group. This was one of those cases like shangguan xiai last season where I was conflicted whether I want them in the group or not but nonetheless if 10 was the lineup he would be my 10th member.
CHEN YUGENG (CRAYON)
This contestant became one of my faves during group battle. I really liked him in “stand” and “domesticator” which showcased his powerful and charismatic side. I admired his leadership qualities and his love for rap. The way he carries himself on stage makes him 10x handsome and his relationship with his brother danfeng is adorable. Also his “go hard” performance was so fire I was having the time of my life. Wishing the best for him and danfeng.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JIANG JINGZUO
You have no idea how much I love him despite not mentioning him in my blog ever. He is the definition of an idol and he is what were looking for in the lineup but clearly iqiyi had other plans. He is a beautiful performer and a great singer I’m honestly just blown away. I loved every performance he has done but if I were to pick one, its definitely “history”. Can’t wait to see him on stage again.
ZHANG SIYUAN (G.G. ZHANG SIYUAN)
His rap is divine. I love this guy and he still has a soft spot in my heart. He may not be the best dancer, he has the stage presence to make up for it and does an amazing job every time. My favourite performances from him are “unworthy” and “domesticator”. Also, him fanboying over THE9 is such a mood I love him. I already miss him and junhao.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHEN JUNHAO (DRCCHEN)
Speaking of junhao, he’s also another honorable mention. He is another triple threat I admire on the show and his friendship with siyuan and sen are honestly the best. My favourite performances from him, well honestly, I can’t choose cause I enjoyed every stage he performed but I will pick “tou tou”. You know what would be awesome? If he, siyuan, sen and chase release a song together, I’d listen to that all day.
ZI YU
I thought I wouldn’t like him but I can’t help it. He is too adorable for words watch out chase. I noticed him when he was forced to do “stand” and I felt bad that he had to perform a song he didn’t want. Either way he is now someone who I look forward to on stage and I love his performances, especially “superpower”. I also enjoyed his “close to you” and “monsoon” stage. His pose in that photo ashsjs so cute!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHEN JUNYU (JAYDON)
I love his voice. His vocals are out of this world. I knew he was good at singing but when he did “stop sugar” for the studio group battle challenge thing no idea where i went with that I swore my heart skipped a beat. He was great in “tou tou” but “stop sugar” was made for him. Anyway, his performances were so good especially “close to you” and “forever love” which was not aired screw you iqiyi.
ZHONG JUNYI (ONE)
My underrated favourite. He is another triple threat I like and is quite handsome I need to promote my faves you guys. I knew he’s a great dancer and rapper but when he was center for “stop sugar” I was blown away. My favourite performances were “history”, “stop sugar” and his part in “kick it”. His stage presence is amazing and I need people to know that he exists. Please look out for his future activities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FANG ZHENG
His vocals. Thats all I’m gonna say. It’s disappointing to see that viewers slept on this guy when he has a dynamite voice. In both performances he did, he showcased his stellar vocals and his dance capabilities. Out of the two performances, I loved “let me stay” which highlighted his vocal ability but “never get low” was good too those light up fans were so cool I want one.
YANG YUEHAN (JOHAN)
I was so mad when he got eliminated. He has such a deep sexy voice hold it together vivs and he’s a decent dancer. I love his performances in “unworthy” and “jade” oh not to mention “heartbreaker”. It’s sad that the only time people knew him was when liang sen delivered the iconic line “don’t touch my johan!” when ailizati wanted him to join his group but I’m excited to see what he does in the future.
-
Those are my 10 of many honorable mentions. It was so hard to pick just 10 to talk about because if I wanted to talk about all of my faves, this would be a long post like last season. Let me know who your faves are!!

OCs lol 1. Xiren and Yuehan Xiren and Yuehan are best friends (tbh can be written as lovers or platonic). Xiren is from a fairly rich family, so he got his parents in Yuehan. Xiren’s parents are pretty chill, they don’t mind him doing what he likes most of the time. They disapprove of the gaming, but are fine with it as long as he gets back on track after he's done. Xiren saved Yuehan from his dad once, but he received some eye trauma, so his left eye is larger (Anisocoria). It makes him dizzy or gives him headaches sometimes, and can affect his vision. He’s 22, 175cm tall, and his eyes are amber. His legs are really skinny and his skin is pretty pale looking. Highkey the type to hide discomfort or illness. Xiren is stubborn as hell when he wants something but also kind, and willing to stake everything for what he loves. Actually can be pretty cuddly, even though he doesn’t seem like it. His eyes are amber, and his left eye is badly scarred, so he wears an eyepatch. His hair is light brown. Hanwen came from a pretty bad family. His father got drunk a lot and liked to beat him up. His mother ran away so he was left alone with his dad. Xiren got him out of there, so they’re technically adoptive brothers. Hanwen has a lot of scars, and sometimes he gets nightmares about his father. Xiren comforts him when the nightmares wake him up at night. Hanwen hates when team tries to put pressure on Wangjie to perform- it’s not Xiren’s fault that the team relies so much on him. He tries his best to lighten Xiren’s load with his own ability as vice-captain. Hanwen is normally quiet, but also strict with the team. He’s really tall, around 182. He’s 21, younger than Xiren by half a year. He is healthy looking, with tanned skin, and a well built frame. His eyes are blue-grey, and his hair is light grey. Would probably jump off a cliff if Xiren asked. 2. Yuanyu and Shaoyi Yuanyu to the outside world is the calm and collected one, He's appears to be perfectly normal, especially when compared to his partner Shaoyi. Yuanyu has ADHD, inattentive type. He's on meds which sometimes makes him nauseous and affects his appetite. He was bullied as a kid for it, so he tries really hard to act normal. Shaoyi, although talking nonstop and acting hyper, is normal, just as a comfort to Yuanyu that he's not the only weird one. Yuanyu is pretty forgetful, Shaoyi is the only reason he can still appear organized. His hair is purple-blue, and he's 18. He likes to read, if he can focus enough. He has a really slender frame, and is around 178cm. His eyes are dark grey. Yuanyu loves physical contact, and is really cuddly. He likes to cling a bit when he's sick. RSD makes him extremely sensitive to any form of rejection, even if it's just in his perception.
Shaoyi is hyper, kinda acts childish, and he talks a lot. He's always following Yuanyu around, and keeps him on track with constant reminders. It looks like he's just blabbering to Yuanyu, but he's almost always helping him through things. He's the responsible one tbh. Yuanyu is almost reliant on his help at this point. Shaoyi is very sensitive to the emotional states of other people, which helps him with Yuanyu who can go from nothing to exploding in seconds. He tries his best to help, and is patient with him whenever he forgets, and he does that a lot. Very good with people. Human puppy, also likes cuddles. Around 165cm, average build. His eyes are dark blue and his hair is blonde.

Hi all,
Here is a model of our Partial- Parts study. It is an typological assignment in Jefferson studio. In our Partial- Part study, I try to figure out both the programmatic and typological relationship between part and part, and part and whole.
Each student in our studio have two projects, a fire station precedent and a part project to study and analyze. We break down the fire station precedent plan, and try to use the formal rules of the part project to recompose a new fire station. In this way, the new recombination has fire station’s program and part project’s formal arrangement.
After the plan recombination, I introduce the rules of my plan into a three-dimensional space, and build this model. It shows how volumes and the gaps between them shape each other and together create many plentiful and diverse spaces.
By recomposing the plan and making this model, I gradually understand the deep structure inside my part project and tend to think typology in a more explicit way.

• Battle of Wuhan
The Battle of Wuhan, popularly known to the Chinese as the Defense of Wuhan, and to the Japanese as the Capture of Wuhan, was a large-scale battle of the Second Sino-Japanese War.
On July 7th, 1937, the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) launched a full-scale invasion of China following the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. Both Beijing and Tianjin fell to the Japanese by July 30th, exposing the rest of the North China Plain. After the fall of Shanghai, Nanjing, which was the capital of China, was threatened directly by the Japanese forces. The nationalists were thus forced to declare the capital as an open city while beginning the process of moving the capital. With the fall of three major Chinese cities (Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai), there was a large number of refugees fleeing the fighting in addition to the government facilities and war supplies that needed to be transferred to the city of Chongqing. On the Japanese side, the IJA forces were drained due to the large number and extent of military operations since the beginning of the invasion. Reinforcements were thus dispatched to boost forces in the area, but this placed a considerable strain on the Japanese peacetime economy. Although putting Japan's economy on a wartime footing slowed down the depletion of its treasury, the economic situation was not sustainable long-term, given the cost of maintaining a military that could deal with the Soviet Union in a border conflict. The Japanese government thus wished to force the Chinese into submission quickly in order to gather resources to move on with their decision over northward and southward expansion. For the Japanese commanders, it was decided that Chinese resistance should be put to an end at Wuhan.
Wuhan, located halfway upstream of the Yangtze River, was the second largest city in China with a population of 1.5 million in late 1938. The Yangtze River and the Hanshui River divides the city into three regions, which include Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang. Wuchang was the political center, Hankou was the commercial district and Hanyang was the industrial area. After the completion of the Yuehan Railway, the importance of Wuhan as a major transportation hub in the interior of China was further established. It also served as an important transit point for foreign aid moving inland. After the Japanese capture of Nanjing, the bulk of Nationalist government agencies and military command headquarters were located in Wuhan despite the fact that the capital had been moved to Chongqing. Wuhan thus became the de facto wartime capital at the onset of the engagements in Wuhan. The Chinese war effort was thus focused on protecting Wuhan from being occupied by the Japanese.
In December 1937, the Military Affairs Commission was created to determine the battle plan for the defense of Wuhan. After the loss of Xuzhou, approximately 1.1 million men or 120 divisions of the National Revolutionary Army were redeployed. The commission decided to organize the defense around the Dabie Mountains, Poyang Lake, and the Yangtze River against the 200,000 Japanese, or 20 divisions of the Imperial Japanese Army. After the Japanese occupied Xuzhou in May 1938, they sought to actively expand the scale of the invasion. The IJA decided to send a vanguard to first occupy Anqing for use as a forward base for an attack on Wuhan, then for its main force to attack the area north of the Dabie Mountains moving along the Huai River, eventually occupying Wuhan by way of the Wusheng Pass. However, due to the Yellow River flood, the IJA was forced to abandon the plan of attacking along the Huai, and decided to attack along both banks of the Yangtze instead. On 4 May, the commander of the IJA forces, Shunroku Hata, organised approximately 350,000 men of the Second and Eleventh Armies for the fighting in and around Wuhan.
The Battle of Wuhan was preceded by a Japanese air strike on 18 February 1938. It was known as the "2.18 Air Battle" and ended with Chinese forces repelling the attack. On 29 April, the Japanese air force launched major air strikes on Wuhan to celebrate Emperor Hirohito's birthday. The Chinese, with prior intelligence, were well prepared. This battle was known as the "4.29 Air Battle" and was one of the most intense air battles of the Second Sino-Japanese War. In an attempt to win more time for the preparation of the defense of Wuhan, the Chinese opened up the dikes of the Yellow River in Huayuankou, Zhengzhou on June 9th. The flood, now known as the 1938 Yellow River flood, forced the Japanese to delay their attack on Wuhan. However, it also caused around 500,000 to 900,000 civilian deaths in North China. On 15 June, the Japanese made a naval landing and captured Anqing, signalling the onset of the Battle of Wuhan. On the southern bank of the Yangtze River, the Chinese Ninth War Zone had one regiment stationed west of Poyang Lake, and another regiment stationed in Jiujiang. On June 24t, the Japanese forces made a surprise landing in Madang, while the main force of the Japanese Eleventh Army attacked along southern shore of the Yangtze River. Madang quickly fell to the Japanese, which opened up the route to Jiujiang.
The Chinese defenders tried to resist the Japanese advance, but they could not repel the landing force of the Japanese 106th Division from capturing Jiujiang on the 26th. The Japanese Namita detachment moved westward along the river. In the meantime, other Japanese forces and the supporting river fleet continued their advance westwards along the Yangtze, encountering resistance from the defending Chinese 31st Army and 32nd Army Group west of Ruichang. While the Japanese Army attacked Ruichang, the 106th Division moved along the Nanxun Railway (now known as Nanchang-Jiujiang) on the south side. The defending Chinese 4th Army, 8th Army Group, and 29th Army Group relied on the advantageous terrain of Lushan and north of Nanxun Railway to resist. As a result, the Japanese offensive suffered a setback.
In the north of the Dabie Mountains, the Chinese 3rd Army Group of the Fifth War Zone stationed the 19th and 51st Army Groups and the 77th Army in the Liuan and Huoshan regions in Anqing. The 71st Army was tasked with the defense of Fujin Mountain and Gushi County in Henan. The Chinese 2nd Group Army was stationed in Shangcheng, Henan and Macheng, Hubei. The Chinese 27th Army Group and the 59th Army was stationed in the Yellow River region, and the 17th Army was deployed in the Xinyang region to organise the defensive works. The Japanese attacked in late August with the 2nd Army Group marching from Hefei on two different routes. The 13th Division, on the southern route, breached the Chinese 77th Army's defensive line and captured Huoshan, then turned towards Yejiaji. The nearby Chinese 71st Army and the 2nd Army Group made use of their existing positions to resist the Japanese onslaught, halting the Japanese 13th Division. The defenders retreated southwards out of the city, using their strategic strongholds in the Dabie Mountains to continue the resistance. On October 24th, the Japanese occupied Macheng.
Due to the continuing stalemate around Wuhan and the continued influx of foreign aid to Chinese forces from ports in the south, the IJA decided to deploy 3 reserve divisions to pressure the naval shipping lines. It was thus decided to occupy the Guangdong port by way of an amphibious landing. Because of the fighting in Wuhan, the bulk of Chinese forces in Guangzhou had been transferred away. As such, the pace of the occupation was much smoother than expected and Guangzhou fell to the Japanese on October 21st. The successive victories attained by the Japanese forces completed the encirclement of Wuhan. Since the loss of the Guangzhou area meant that no more foreign aid would be flowing in, the strategic value of Wuhan was lost. The Chinese Army, hoping to save their remaining forces, thus abandoned the city on October 25th. The Japanese Army captured Wuchang and Hankou on the 26th of October and captured Hanyang on the 27th, concluding the campaign in Wuhan.
After four months of intense fighting, both the Chinese Air Force and the Navy were decimated as the IJA had successfully captured Wuhan. However, the main Chinese land force remained largely intact, while the IJA was significantly weakened. The battle of Wuhan bought more time for Chinese forces and equipment in Central China to move further inland to Chongqing, laying the foundation for an extended war of resistance. After the capture of Wuhan, the IJA advance in central China was slowed down significantly by multiple battles around Changsha in 1939, 1941, and 1942. No more major offensives were launched until Operation Ichi-Go in 1944, with limited offensives mounted for the sole purpose of training recruits. The Chinese managed to preserve their strength to continue resisting the weakened IJA, reducing its capability to respond to rising tensions between Japan and the Soviet Union at the borders in the Northeast.
