How're the dummies in the Your Turn Ryoko AU?? 🫣

how are the dummies? not doing too great. courtesy of the uh, whole “dying and being brought back as dolls” thing

okok but in all seriousness, i assume you are asking who takes the role of each dummy in ytr! tbh, i haven’t focused as much on the dummies because i’ve been busy fleshing out the main cast (and especially because the dummies just canonly play smaller roles), so i’m gonna format this a little differently from the main cast/floormaster posts, and have smaller tidbits on each swap ;; i hope that’s okay!

as a general assessment, though: the chap 3 subgame remains relatively the same in premise, with one dummy being paired with each survivor. i wanted to take a little bit of a different approach for the pairings, though, and so depending on the “route” (yes i did incorporate branching paths into ytr as well) different characters are paired with each other.

but, as for the actual swaps…

Anzu Kinashi > Ranmaru Kageyama

Q-taro Burgerberg > Anzu Kinashi

Alice Yabusame > Naomichi Kurumada

Reko Yabusame > Shunsuke Hayasaka

Gin Ibushi > Mai Tsurugi

now for some tidbits!!!

- i’m aware anzu is already a dummy in canon, but i wanted her to take ranmaru’s spot so she could be paired with ryoko because. girls (this is literally just how i decide things for my au) (i think “huh this would be neat” and make it a reality)

- and yes depending on the route she does try to, and succeeds at, killing somebody (i’m sorry ❤️). i wanted to try and make it a bit more sympathetic than with logic ranmaru though, and show that she really agonizes over it but ultimately her survival instinct wins out (i always thought it was interesting how anzu says things like “this is why we can’t possibly work with you guys!” when she’s scared etc. and so i kinda wanted to play on her fear pushing her into doing things she regrets)

- with keiji i wanted to go with the idea that, yes he is human, but he isn’t an entirely different person pretending to be a dummy like fake hinako was, he’s a human survivor blending in with the dummies (i’m not entirely sure how this would work since that means he’d have to had somehow avoided the main games. but i’m attached to this idea so i wanna make it work somehow). so my idea is while he does work with asunaro in this au, it’s more of a “malicious compliance” type thing where he acts as a double agent and is actually on the side of the participants. if that makes any sense…

reko, alice, q-taro and gin don’t have as many changes to their personalities/circumstances here so i have less to say about them but there are still some things! for example:

- alice never “killed” sou here, so he never went to jail. that also means him and reko have a more stable relationship here, and theyre actually still in a band together :) they also act a bit different since they didn’t have to cope with the trauma of alice’s murder case, so more similar to the “ai personalities” (which makes sense i guess, since they are ai here!)

- q-taro and gin act pretty much the same. or i guess, the same as their yttd chapter 1 selves. rest assured that even though gin takes mai’s role here, he does not try to attack anyone (even though it would be really funny). q-taro, on the other hand, i can’t say the same for…

this still ended up being a little long even though i said these would be tidbits…oopsie. well, have an anzu doodle while you’re here!

YES!! thank you so much for the ask!!

soooo basically the whole idea behind it was “i wanna let the yttd cast hang out and be friends with no death game but also their characters are so shaped by the experiences they go through in canon and i want them to be able to get closure/recover and such.” it’s super self indulgent, basically just a setup to Put Them In Situations with each other

(rest is under the cut cause this got really long whoops)

so! here’s the basic premise: everyone involved in the death game wakes up back in time before it all happened, with full memories of everything (up to the end of 3-1B or the time of their death.) dummies retain memories of everything their dolls/ais experienced, but they’re back in their real bodies. everyone who died has scars on their bodies that line up with the wounds that killed them (only the human wounds in the case of the dummies). kanna/reko route. asunaro characters that we met are also back in time, but asunaro as an organization completely vanishes and they’re left on their own to figure out what to do. asunaro wishes have come true, so alice is let out of prison and q-taro is healed and such.

but that’s really just the setup!!! i have a like 18 page document that just covers the story from there which i won’t really get into here but if you’re interested it includes such things as:

Keiji getting a job as a bartender and his bar becoming a hangout place for Alice, Q-taro, and sometimes Kai

Shin becoming an honorary member of the Kizuchi family and spending lots of time with Kanna and Kugie

Shin getting fired from his convenience store job and becoming keiji’s roommate while his mental health recovers enough to find a new job (the idea of them helping each other heal and move on is just so interesting to me considering how similar they are. they can fix each other (not really) <3)

Alice and Reko reconciling and Alice getting involved in Reko’s band again. Also rekonao is real ofc

Kai and Sara know each other now, so Kai is actually able to interact with her and becomes a kind of older brother figure

Sara, Joe, Ryoko, Ranmaru, Anzu, and Kugie are a big friend group now (ofc) and they like go to karaoke and play video games and stuff. also they hang out at Mai’s bread shop

AND MUCH MORE!!!! i have at least a little bit written for every single character lol. the big stories i focus on are mostly the high school friend group, keiji and shin, and reko and alice.

Mishima - Basic teacher videos, but art themed!! Those fun school cover songs but abt color wheel n stuff like that. @ is TeachMishi, only on tiktok and twitter. No idea how to use either. Sigh <33 my fav <33  Qtaro - Doesnt use social media that much, but when he does !! Its mostly highlights of baseball videos !! @ Is Qtall (dont ask why, he doesnt know either) Only uses twitter and insta.

Sara Chidouin - Sara is a well known news anchor. She’s known for finding scoops no other reporters can through her charisma. 

Joe Tazuna - Joe is famous by association with Sara. He’s known for popping up in her news reports to tell jokes or just talk to the camera like it’s a friend. He lightens up Sara’s normally professional attitude and the fans hope Joe will join Sara as a crew member one day. 

Gin Ibushi - Gin stared in a dog food commercial that really blew up and ended up reaching meme status (kind of like the Jake from state farm commercial). 

Keiji Shinogi - The entire fandom seems to simp over him so lets make him a famous model. He’s a very polarizing figure after shooting his first boss in what he claims was self defense during an argument. People hire him if they believe “all publicity is good publicity.). 

Alice and Reko Yabusame - You don’t have to change a lot for these two. Reko is already famous for her singing, and if Alice stayed in a band with her he’d probably be big too. 

Kazumi Mishima and Nao Egokoro - Mishima is a famous artist. His paintings go for large amounts of money and are hung in many museums. He mentors Nao who wants to be just as talented and big as Mishima is. 

Q-taro Burgerberg - Q-Taro is famous for his baseball skills. He’s on of the most talented players Japan has ever seen. Everyone at least knows his name even if they don’t keep up with sports. 

Kai Satou - Kai is a famous chief and has his own cooking show. He has one of the shows watched by Mothers early on Saturday morning. He’s not well known by anyone not in that demographic but he enjoys his small quiet success.   

Kanna Kizuchi - Kanna acts along with Kugie in a sitcom. I don’t have a lot to add to this. 

Shin Tsukimi - Shin is famous in online space’s. He’s a streamer who teaches about hacking and plays video games. He’s well known for his angry and frantic reactions to horror games. 

Dolls

Ranmaru Kageyama - Ranmaru runs a podcast that’s well known by teenagers. He has very chill vibes and his podcast feels a lot like you’re listening to a friend. 

Naomichi Kurumada - Naomichi is a famous boxer. He has a win streak that very few have managed to beat. He interacts with a lot with his fans through social media and is well loved for it. 

Anzu Kinashi - Anzu is an acrobat/performer. Her stunts aren’t always the most graceful or successful but she can always make what she does funny. She’s good for a laugh and is more famous for that then she is her acrobat career. 

Mai Tsurugi - Mai is a movie actor! She’s known for being able to turn her emotions on and off on a whim. She plays either the love interest or a slasher with no in between. 

Shunsuke Hayasaka - Shunsuke is the least famous celebrity. He runs a well known and respected business blog. He’s famous in the business circle but if you weren’t interested in that sort of thing it would be like he didn’t exist at all. 

Hinako Mishuku - Hinako is a YouTuber. People think she’s playing a pessimistic character for a humor aspect. She’s not, she’s just cynical as a person. 

The basics of this AU is Sara gets assigned to learn more about the lives of celebrities, and ends up finding a found family in the process.

this is your typical ‘au where nobody dies and they just happen to know eachother’ but all the participants are very close and... i’ve just thought up random scenarios n headcanons to go along with it. (also a lot of these r influenced by .shintsukimistan’s headcanons so please check out their blog if you wanna see good headcanons!) canon ships in this au: joemaru, keiji x kai, rekonao. (we also have hinakanna but im not really sure about shipping children, so we’ll just place it as platonic for now :] ) long post undercut

- q-taro is very very competitive, and he’s confident in his sports ability. so one time, joe challenged q-taro to a round of twister, in which q-taro obviously one, but then kai was like ‘i’d like to have a go.’ q-taro is like very intimidated by kai lol so he’s tryna impress him, and a move calls for kai to put his hands on, let’s say red. q-taro’s leg is in the way. queue kai doing a backbend and landing flawlessly. And keiji was laughing his ass off. like everytime you remind him of this he’ll laugh.

- they were all sleeping over at mishimas house on thanksgiving. unfortunately mishima lives next to a person who’s a spider enthusiast, and a tarantula got loose and ended up right next to gin somehow.  he woke up and screamed, every1 came running in (except for shin he kinda just walked in n then turned around saying ‘nope nope nope’) EVERY1 WAS SCREAMING and kai just *calmly places it in a jar* 

- nao: babe. wake up. please. i need to tell you something. honey. wake u- reko: what is so important that you had to wake me up at 4am on a tuesday nao: i love you - one time q-taro was drunk, and he gets competitive as hell. he was sitting at a table with kai, joe, keiji and alice, going On and On about how he was the strongest. joe dared him 2 arm wrestle keiji and in doing so, keiji got ready and simply just slammed his hand down before joe started counting (it took him off guard) keiji is smug as hell so q-taro is yelling that it wasn’t fair n keijis going ‘haha lol guess you aren’t the strongest’ and q-taro was progressively getting more annoyed

- kai is a stickler for proper posture and one time whacked shin in the back with his ladle thingy (is it called a ladle)... shin got a bruise LOL  - gonna talk about the ships for a little! reko and nao have been dating for 1 yr n 4 months. they met at a cafe (lol classic cafe au ooo) and reko was just entranced with nao’s hair. she went up to go say that (she doesn’t like to just ogle in silence lol) and nao told her she looked really cool. they exchanged numbers after small talk, and nao confessed 2 months later. very healthy relationship, yin to eachothers yang :]

- still not sure about keikai?!? how they’d date n stuff.. they’re both very reserved.. maybe kai wld confess

- ranmaru confessed w a letter! after being talked into it by sara, he wrote a note to joe telling him to meet at their hangout spot after school. joe came n was like ‘hey someone said 2 meet here have u seen them- OH WAIT’ it was a very slow confession.. ranmaru was very nervous. made it clear his feelings for joe were beyond friendship. joe asked him what being romantic w eachother meant, n ranmaru explained. joe didnt realize his feelings for maru were romantic up until that moment, and accepted his confession :D he and ranmaru sat down and joe asked him about what he felt comfy and uncomfy w, and talked about what they shld n shldn’t talk ab. it was sweet. they told the others soon later. 

- speaking of others, i mentioned this before, but best friend squad!! ryoko, joe, sara, anzu, ranmaru and kugie are all friends! :D joe and sara and ryoko were friends prior, and anzu was ryokos friend (they were both in band). after ryoko introduced anzu to joe and sara, ranmaru came along and anzu befriended him, introducing him 2 joe sara n ryoko. then kugie got expelled from her last school and came 2 the school.. sara befriended her quite easily bc she does not take shit from anyone and kugie found that attractive LOL and boom! bsf squad! they hang out often! (i’ll make headcanons ab them later lol)

- hinako and kanna met at school :D they were paired 2gether for a project, n kanna was REALLY scared of her at first. but after like a few minutes she realized hinako wasn’t that scary n actually kinda nice (hinako was exhausted that day, if she wasn’t she probably would’ve tried 2 scare kanna a lil more tmjiwt). kanna and hinako became friends after that, hinako did have a bad case ‘ohh is she pretending to like me?’ but it quickly faded after kanna did kind things out of the blue. they have sleepovers like a lot (n they cuddle platonically :D its just kanna going ‘..hinako’ ‘yes’ ‘can kanna be cradled’ ‘okay’ and then they fall asleep like that)

- joe: hey you two are kinda similar (to ranmaru and shin). you’re both kinda quiet, kinda emo, skinny, kinda good with tech, n ur both relatively the same height *ranmaru and shin look at eachother* ranmaru: yeah except i dont look like this *over exaggeratedly slouches* shin: .___.

So this is really random, but sonetimes Nankidai's festival sketches haunt the back of my brain like: sure, the group saved Shin from Sou, but what about the aftermath? Did anyone make sure he was getting home safe? :< Was he too rattled to sleep that night? What went through his mind after the festival? I wonder abt this a lot...

That’s a really good question. Not just about the summer festival arc, but about Shin’s character in general. Because I think it’s pretty clear within the canon narrative that Alice murdering Sou did not “save” Shin. Shin was still hurting even when his abuser was no longer a physical presence in his life. Sou’s shadow still loomed in Shin’s mind. So it’s worthwhile to talk about how “saving someone” isn’t that easy.

“What happened today, Sou-san? Your face looks a bit…” “…haha. I guess I’m not feeling well. I’m… going home.”

Before I go further, this ask inspired me to re-read Nankidai’s summer festival arc on the YTTD wiki, and I highly encourage it to anyone who hasn’t read it yet! You can find the whole story under the page “Nankidai 2020 tweets/c,” which is filed under “Twitter transcripts.” The wiki provides a translation, but sometimes I found it useful to check out the links to the original tweets and read other fan translations in the replies for clarification.

Even though the premise of the story is a little confusing, because it takes place in an AU, the emotional beats hit strong! What I love about the summer festival arc is that it feels like a battle between Sara and Sou over Shin. How much more self-indulgent can you get? Sou wants to steal Shin away, but Sara and her band of friends rescue Shin, leading to a lovely little heart-to-heart between our favorite rivals. It’s a wonderful AU for its promise that the Player Character and Our Antagonist Shin could have gotten along under better circumstances.

Anyway, I pulled up the illustration of the immediate aftermath of “saving Shin from Sou.” We see both Kanna and Sara approaching Shin to make sure he’s okay, and Shin confesses that he feels ill and wants to go home.

In canon, Shin has similar visceral reactions whenever Sou is on his mind. For example, after Shin’s War of Words with Sara in the First Main Game—the point where he “snaps” and commits to his wicked Sou persona—he has a coughing fit.

SOU: *pant*... *pant*... / *cough* *cough* I'm exhausted... I feel kind of sick...

Shin also feels ill after seeing Sou’s photograph on Kai’s laptop, and he promptly excuses himself from the room.

SOU: Oogh...! Pant...!! Pant...!!! / Sorry, I... I gotta use the toilet...

You could argue that Shin is “faking” these moments of illness to garner sympathy, but I don’t think he is. What makes Shin an interesting, sympathetic character is that even in his worst moments, you can tell he’s genuinely hurting deep down. It helps us understand that he acts out of fear, not simply cunning. When Shin commits to hurting Sara, just as Sou hurt him, we see that Shin is hurting himself as well.

Going back to the Summer Festival Arc. This is why that illustration of Sara and Kanna trying to comfort Shin makes me emotional. Kanna is the character in canon who cares the most about Shin’s well-being, and Sara as the Player Character can feel deeply for Shin as well. One detail I love about Sara is that even if you choose “I hate him” when Gin asks you how you feel about Shin, Sara will still follow that up with a hopeful wish to get to know the “real Sou.” To me, that shows a (kind of adorable) bias on Nankidai’s part for his own antagonist character. He wants you to care about Shin, even when you hate him!

CHOICE: I hate him

SARA: ...I hate him. / The lies he tells, and how he uses other people.

GIN: Big sis Sara…

SARA: But wanting us to escape all together… That’s not a lie. / I bet if we can be freed from here, I might get to know the real Sou.

So it makes sense to me to highlight these two girls as the characters most concerned for Shin’s personal happiness. That’s why I’m so fond of his relationships with them.

It’s nice to imagine, in an ideal world, that Shin’s friendships with these girls (and possibly other folks too!) would have helped him process his trauma. Over time, he may be able to open up more and trust in other people again. In canon, Sara and Kanna can help him reconcile with his true vulnerable self and cast away Sou’s scarf, but at the high cost of him choosing to sacrifice himself.

However, even in such an ideal world, “helping Shin” would still not be easy. At the end of the day, the only person who can “save Shin” is Shin himself. We can reach out for him, but he needs to accept that help.

I haven’t played yttd yet- I want to soon though. I looked them up and their design looks really cool, though!

As for Tenko:

I love her and I honestly think she’s adorable

I like that she’s intense but still comes across as really innocent- to me, at least idk about others-

I really don’t like the way her character was handled- it seemed like they were trying to make her come across as annoying and I just- I dunno, I don’t like that it doesn’t sit right with me

I have mixed feelings about her design; she’s really cute, but her outfit is,,,,, ehhhhh. Like, there are elements I like in it, but it didn’t really stick the landing for me. Tbh I think pants would have suited her a lot better

I think part of the problem is actually the color palette; the muted blue is already kinda gross looking to me but mixed with that light, slightly yellow-ish green is just- ick. I think either color could have worked if it had been paired with... not the one they went with

Don Quixote au ft Himiko as Al Donza. I think that would be so adorable, but that might also just be due to the fact that I absolutely adore that story (funnily enough, I don’t think Tenko would like it very much)

Hmm... this one’s a bit of a toughie, but maybe she’d get along with Sonomi Daidouji from Cardcaptor Sakura?
