[Review] Air Twister (ATV)
A strange hybrid.
Another Apple Arcade title that caught my eye was this rail shooter. It seems to mash up two Sega classics: Space Harrier (flying person with a gun) and Panzer Dragoon (the lock-on shooting mechanic). Directed by Yu Suzuki through his company Ys Net, otherwise known for Shenmue 3, it certainly has that Sega pedigree! (He also directed the original Space Harrier you see, although he wasn't involved with Panzer Dragoon.)
The game kind of throws you in initially, so you might think it's a simple arcadey experience. Only after failing your first run does it reveal its broader scope (although the game itself doesn't shy away from oddly quoting Suzuki himself saying that the arcade mode is the real game and everything else is just extra). By defeating enemies in the main mode you gradually accumulate stars which unlock nodes in an "Adventure" map. These give you all sorts of things: extra max health, new weapons, charges for a slowdown ability, new cosmetic gear, etc.
This is how Air Twister artificially encourages a player to do extra runs of the main game's 12 stages, although I had fun trying out the different weapons by retackling the short campaign. Also unlockable are new modes of play, only most of them seem especially superfluous, not to mention expensive in stars since you only unlock individual stages at a time for these modes.
As for the game itself, it's pretty decent. Rail shooters like this often have trouble effectively depicting the depth of incoming projectiles to help the player avoid them, and this one certainly has that problem. As someone who grew up on Lylat Wars the enemy placements and formations seem a bit standard as well, and the basic combat lacks that visceral impact. The graphics have quite good fidelity but this seems to have come at the cost of model and texture pop-in, as well as occasional frame stuttering, which you really don't want with an action game like this.
Promotion for the game boasts of its touch and swipe controls, which I didn't test at all. I just used a controller for a more traditional experience, which the upcoming console port would seem to confirm is going to win out as the default scheme. Perhaps as a consequence of designing around direct touch control, there is no crosshair to help out controller players which makes lining up your lock-ons more difficult... or maybe that's part of its Space Harrier legacy, which also lacked this feature. Planet Harriers had a crosshair, pout pout.
An interesting feature of this game is that it represents a collaboration with Dutch music artist Valensia. His heavily Queen-inspired prog rock songs (a mix of old hits and newly composed tracks for this game) grant a very novel "rock opera" feel to the game experience. I don't tend to like lyrical songs in my video games, and they didn't really try to time the action to the music, but even so it's pretty cool to prominently feature this kind of music in a game.
Like many Apple Arcade games, this has the uncomfortable feel of hybridisation between console and mobile game design. It has daily and weekly goals, premium currencies, and even the dreaded timed events. The latter ran for just a month at a time last year (three in total) and their exclusive cosmetics are now inaccessible. I loathe this practice, and they seem to have stopped it, presumably while focusing on the console port. The app icon still hasn't even been changed away from a seasonal event which has been over for eight months. Baffling.
As it is, the odd compromises and decisions in the design of this game would probably destine this for footnote status in the Space Harrier legacy alongside Planet Harriers. Hopefully the console port tightens its focus and gets it more attention, because there's some nice stuff here. I didn't even mention the bizarre lore compendium or the cool environments which again hybridise the surrealist Space Harrier worlds with Panzer Dragoon's more grounded epic fantasy vibes, leading to some imaginative dreamy landscapes.

I played Air Twister, the latest game made by Yu Suzuki's game studio and like their previous game, Shenmue 3, it manages to feel both new and dated (not retro, dated) at the same time somehow. It's a fun enough little arcade style game, though dispite it's appearance it plays more like Panzer Dragoon than it does Space Harrier. I do enjoy 3D arcade rail shooters so I was pretty interested in trying it out.
As expected of an arcade rail shooter game the main arcade mode can be cleared pretty quickly. There's some incentive for replayability like score attacks and extra modes but things like the quite frankly psychotic number of unlockable cosmetics are kind of meh. I feel like it's missing just a little something to really get me hooked on it. I'm not sure what that is though, maybe branching paths like Star Fox or a more in depth scoring system or more difficult CRAAAZY bosses like Sin and Punishment to really push the gameplay just a bit further. It's also a little slower paced than I'd like, it kind of lacks the manic intensity that you'd see in Space Harrier. If challenge is something that interests you the game does allow for a very punishing one-life mode where a single hit ends you immedietly, recreating the unfair bullshit of the old arcade games you know and love
In terms of presentation it's nothing amazing graphically but I guess the art style of weird creatures and random geometric shapes that make up the enemies, like you would in Space Harrier, is a visually appealing style. There really doesn't seem to be any coherent theme to the artstyle but to it's credit I guess I can maybe call Air Twister the trippiest rail shooter I've played. Besides some very mobile game-like interfaces (it was originally an apple arcade game) it kind of feels like a game that you'd have seen on the Xbox 360 or something, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Probably the most memorable part of the game is the soundtrack, produced by musician Valensia (no, I've never heard of him either) which is a pretty interesting choice and has some bizarre yet catchy tunes that have some odd mix of the likes of Queen or Electric Light Orchestra that somehow works. It's why I kind of wish the bosses were more substantial and lasted a bit longer so I could hear more of the tracks they made for it because some of the tracks are pretty rad.
I know all the Shenmue fans have been following the game as they're interested in what Yu Suzuki does and also in the hopes he'll continue making Shenmue 4 or something but even if you're not part of that weird community that I occaisionally expose myself there's still fun to be had.
Overall I give the game an It's fine/10.

Just Finished: Shenmue III
Bailu is an amazing place to be and catching flowers is not that bad (though catching pokémons feels slightly better.The issue with this game is that it maintained the same problems with the fighting mechanics and the bittersweet monotony from 20 years ago. But to be honest that last part kinda felt good. A little bit like the Sims it touch some nerves that reflected my life and how I organize my daily routines and I have to thank for that. But it's clearly an exception!

Man Shenmue 3 is not looking so hot.
If we’re being honest it’s looking better than I expected, given its budget. Shenmue was an extremely expensive game to make, and that early footage was REAL bad, but by comparison it’s come a long way.
It doesn’t look amazing, like it doesn’t look as good as, say, a Yakuza game. But a description I’m fond of is that it looks like “a high-res Dreamcast game.” And it certainly looks better now than it did a year or two ago, where it was basically an Unreal Engine 4 tech demo.
I still don’t think it’ll be a great game. The mythology of Shenmue’s reputation will overshadow it too much, if nothing else.

Happy Shenmue day, everyone! Today, the re-releases of Shenmue I & II have finally hit store shelves and Suzuki-san has an announcement that will certainly make every fan grin.
In the latest Kickstarter update, Yu Suzuki announced the official release date for Shenmue III, along with a new trailer to feast your eyes on. I’ve also screen-capped a couple of images from the trailer, which you can take a look at below.
