Baby dies after being cut from womb
A baby boy who was cut from a Chicago womans womb with a butcher knife has died in hospital, where he had been since the April attack that killed his mother. Yovanny Jadiel Lopez died at Christ Medical Center from a severe brain injury, according to a statement posted on Facebook. Family spokeswoman Julie Contreras expressed great sadness in announcing the babys death. The baby had been on life support since being brought to the hospital on April 23. Prosecutors say Clarisa Figueroa, 46, claimed she had given birth to the baby. She and her 24-year-old daughter, Desiree Figueroa, are charged with murder in the death of the babys mother, 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez. Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said he expects both women will now be charged with murder in the infants death.

An lawyer for the family, Frank Avila, demanded that the office charge the two women with murder, and charge the Figueroas boyfriend, Piotr Bobak, with murder as well. Bobak has been charged with concealing a homicide. The baby was murdered and we demand justice, he said.

Mr Avila told reporters that he was notified overnight that the babys condition had deteriorated, prompting him to call a Catholic priest, who came to the hospital to administer last rites. Four hours later, he said, the child died as a result of brain injuries caused by a loss of oxygen when he was cut from his mothers body. Christ Medical Center said that its hearts and prayers were with the babys family, and that their courage and grace have drawn the admiration of our entire organisation. Authorities contend that not long after Clarisa Figueroas adult son died of natural causes, she told her family she was pregnant. They say she plotted for months to acquire a newborn, and that she posted an ultrasound and photos of a room decorated for a baby on her Facebook page.

The two first met in person around April 1, when Ms Ochoa-Lopez went to the Figueroas house and left unharmed, prosecutors allege. The teen returned on April 23 to accept Clarisa Figueroas offer of free baby clothes, and as Desiree Figueroa was showing Ms Ochoa-Lopez a photo album of her late brother to distract her, Clarisa Figueroa sneaked up behind her and strangled her with a cord. Once Ms Ochoa-Lopez stopped showing signs of life, Clarisa Figueroa cut the baby from her womb and she and her daughter wrapped the teens body in a blanket, put it in a plastic bag and dragged it outside to a garbage can, according to prosecutors. Later that day, Clarisa Figueroa called 911 claiming that her newborn baby was not breathing. When first responders arrived, the child was blue. They tried to resuscitate the infant and took him to Christ Medical Center, where he remained until his death. Family of Baby Cut from Mother's Womb Is Billed Over $300,000 By Hospital: 'It's Atrocious'
The family of an infant who died after he was cut from his murdered mother’s womb has been billed more than $300,000 for his care, the attorney for the baby’s father tells PEOPLE.
In addition, hospital bills identify the child as “Figueroa, boy” — the same last name as alleged murderer Clarisa Figueroa, who pretended she gave birth to the baby and cared for him in the hospital as if he were her child.
“It’s atrocious, it’s horrible,” attorney Frank Avila tells PEOPLE. “It’s hard for me to understand the lack of humanity.”
RELATED: 5 Proven Ways to Reduce Your Medical Bills
In a statement to PEOPLE, the hospital, Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, says it has “had discussions with the family regarding inadvertent billing and we regret this error.”
Authorities say the baby’s nine-months-pregnant mother, 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, was killed on April 23 after Clarisa Figueroa, 46, lured the expectant mom to her home by promising to give her free baby items. Prosecutors allege Clarisa Figueroa strangled her with a coaxial cable and cut the infant from her womb.
After that, Clarisa Figueroa allegedly called 911 to claim she had just given birth and the newborn was not breathing.
Paramedics rushed Figueroa and the newborn to the hospital, where Figueroa and her family continued to monitor the child.
Avila first made the comments about the hospital bill Thursday to The Chicago Sun Times.
The comments followed a bail hearing where prosecutors announced new first-degree murder charges against Figueroa and her daughter, Desiree Figueroa, 24, in the death of the baby, Yovanny Jadiel Lopez, reports The Sun Times.

Prosecutors say Yovanny died on June 14 from injuries he sustained due to a lack of oxygen when he was cut from his mother’s body. The women were denied bail, according to The Sun Times.
Authorities had previously charged the mother and daughter with first-degree murder and aggravated battery of a child under 13 in the attack on Ochoa-Lopez. Both have pleaded not guilty.
A third person, Desiree’s boyfriend Piotr Bobak, 40,  is also charged with one felony count of concealment of a homicide.
Avila, who represents the late baby’s father, Yovany Lopez, says that even after the Figueroas were charged with murder and the boy died, the hospital sent bills that called the baby “Figueroa, boy.”
He says the hospital has promised to write off the bills, but never put anything in writing, and that Lopez is still receiving demands for payment.

In a bill dated June 3 which Avila provided to PEOPLE, the hospital informs the family that their “balance is past due. Please pay the entire amount … to avoid being referred to an external collection agency.”
“My client is overwhelmed by all this,” says Avila, noting the 20-year-old Lopez is now a single dad for the couple’s three-year-old. “It’s not right, it’s revictimizing him.”
In the statement obtained by PEOPLE, the hospital says it regrets “inadvertent billing.”
“Our hearts and prayers continue to be with the Ochoa-Lopez family during this difficult time. We have had discussions with the family regarding inadvertent billing and we regret this error. We take our obligation to patient privacy seriously, and therefore are unable to comment further regarding care, services or billing.”

Family Mistakenly Billed 'Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars' for Care of Infant Torn From Womb
The hospital that treated the infant child who was ripped from his mother's womb after her grisly slaying in Chicago says bills sent to the infant's father were an "error."
Frank Avila, the attorney for the family of 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa, said Advocate Christ Medical Center sent medical bills totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars to Yovanny Lopez in wake of his child's death.
WATCH: Man Climbs 15 Stories Down High-Rise During Fire
The hospital acknowledged Thursday that the bill was "inadvertently sent" and the hospital "regrets this error," but said it could not comment further due to patient privacy.
"Our hearts and prayers continue to be with the Ochoa-Lopez family during this difficult time," the hospital said in a statement. "We have had discussions with the family regarding a bill that was inadvertently sent and we regret this error. We take our obligation to patient privacy seriously, and therefore are unable to comment further regarding care, services or billing."

The mother-daughter duo accused of killing Ochoa before cutting her unborn baby from her womb and claiming it as their own are now facing a new murder charge for the infant's death.
Desiree and Clarisa Figueroa have been charged with murder after the infant who was ripped from 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa's womb following her death died at a Chicago hospital last month, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's office.
2 Horses Die After Head-On Collision at Del Mar Racetrack
Both were ordered held without bond on the new charge Thursday.
"We are grateful that charges have been placed on these murderers," said the father of the baby, Yovanny Lopez. "We understand that the evidence supports charging both mother and daughter in the death of my infant son who suffered so much from injuries inflicted upon him by these women. We have faith that the criminal justice system will prevail and justice will be served.”
Ochoa's infant child died weeks after his mother's murder. The baby's death was ruled a homicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner, who determined the child died from a lack of oxygen and blood to his brain and cited "maternal assault and demise."
The Figueroas, along with Clarisa Figueroa's boyfriend Piotr Bobak, had already pleaded not guilty in the death of Marlen Ochoa.
The mother and daughter pair were charged with first-degree murder in the Ochoa's grisly killing. Bobak was charged with concealing the homicide.
"Not only will the state not be able to prove him guilty, he’s innocent," said Bobak's lawyer Hal Garfinkel. "Mr. Bobak is innocent. Both of us look forward to his day in court."
Authorities contend that not long after Clarisa Figueroa's adult son died of natural causes, she told her family she was pregnant. They say she plotted for months to acquire a newborn, and that she posted an ultrasound and photos of a room decorated for a baby on her Facebook page. In March, she and Ochoa connected on a Facebook page for pregnant women.
Prosecutors alleged the mother-daughter pair lured Ochoa to their home, where they offered to give her clothes and other items for her unborn child. As Desiree Figueroa was showing Ochoa a photo album of her late brother to distract her, Clarisa Figueroa sneaked up behind her and strangled her with a cord before her baby was cut from her womb.
Later that day, Clarisa Figueroa called 911 claiming that her newborn baby was not breathing. When first responders arrived, the child was blue. They tried to resuscitate the infant and took him to Christ Medical Center, where he remained until his death.
Prosecutors said 46-year-old Clarisa Figueroa was examined in a birthing center at Advocate Christ Medical Center on April 23 after claiming to have given birth, "but showed no signs consistent with a woman who had just delivered a baby."
A technician at the Oak Lawn hospital cleaned blood from Figueroa’s arms, face and hands, prosecutors said, but it was unclear if anyone verified that she had actually given birth. Figueroa was allegedly able to pass off the baby as her own for weeks.
An investigation from the Illinois Department of Public Health cleared the hospital in the case, but noted deficiencies in their process.

Let’s Show Some Love for Astoria’s Florists
By Lamour Workman, Lic. R.E. Salesperson in the Long Island City Office
Valentine’s Day is the most important day of the year for Florist.  Like department stores during Christmas it is when most flower shops do at least 50% of their annual revenue on this day.  As couples show their love for one another with flowers, stuffed teddy bears and chocolate I would like to highlight a few of Astoria’s long standing flower shops.
Peter Cooper Florist at 2802 Steinway St is one of the oldest in the neighborhood.  The Dmitry family has run this shop for over 40 years.  When I spoke with owner Chris Dmitry, he said that red roses always outsell every flower in the shop on Valentine’s Day.  He added that his biggest concern on February 14th is making sure every customer gets his or her deliver on time and at the right location.   Volume is so high on this day that he has to hire temporary drivers to meet the demand of customers wanting their flowers delivered. If you are considering a Teddy for your sweet heart, perhaps you want to shop at Metro Floral on 4116 30th Avenue with its large selection of stuffed bears.  Although red roses are their biggest seller too, the stuffed animals and balloons make up a large part of Valentine’s Days sales.   When I asked the owner, Yovanny, what was the largest amount roses he has had to deliver, he said that someone once ordered 1000 red roses for his wife.   He said it was the most roses he had ever seen at one time.
For those of you who wait until the last minute while getting off the N/Q train to remember that this is a day for acknowledging your love for that special someone, Annis Flower Shop at 3102 30th Avenue is also a family owned flower shop that has been in the neighborhood for 75 years. Whatever flower shop you choose on Valentine’s Day, I wish you a day filled with Joy, Love and Laughter.
Happy Valentine’s Day
