Usually I don't buy into self sacrifice in fiction because how much can one human life really be worth, when so many have been lost already? But the way that orv sets up Kim Dokja's self sacrifices, sure it has its own in universe reasons, but the reason it sold me on why those sacrifices were necessary and worked was that subjective feeling of equivalent exchange. He wanted to save his world (companions), so he sacrificed himself. This is fair payment because he exists as 'the world' to everyone else. Just. Jung Heewon confronting Anna Croft with "you want to save the world? I do too. He is the world I wish to save" (paraphrased) and Kim Dokja obtaining the story 'One Who is Loved by All' and Lee Sookyung shaving off years of her life for him before and during the scenarios and him becoming a protective and nurturing presence to his kids and showing Lee Hyunsung how to use his strength to protect justice and giving Yoo Joonghyuk hope and giving meaning to Han Sooyoung's writing and decades of waiting to meet him just by continuing to exist. There are so many other people that he means so much to and I'll never get over how beloved he is, before during and after the scenarios. The whole time! The whole time he has been loved. He isn't always able to see it but it's always been there. Meeting him is like being unable to imagine someone more worthy of love while at the same time thinking that he's not particularly remarkable. It's the way that he is cherished and returns that kindness that makes him incredible (The Little Prince and his conclusions about the uniqueness of his rose come to mind. It wasn't mentioned in ORV, but the Little Prince played a significant role in TWATF so I think some of those themes carry over to ORV because SingShong seem to really like that story)
#talking tag#orv spoilers#uoghhh#i need to get up in 3 hours. ..#read TWATF#i didnt like it but its important to understanding SingShong a bit more#the storyline is a lot more straightforward than orv so its like the singshong themes and cliches accelerated course#im rereading orv but i need to reread the little prince and twatf right fucking now#and also maybe brush up on murim tropes and learn some mythology and history and and and#there should be a required reading list for all the things that orv references goddamn#i was pitching this to my buddy the other day and i said something like 'orv should be understandable to anyone about high school level but#your reading experience will be enriched if you have a bunch of background knowledge of all these topics'#which i think is a really cool thing the authors did! they set out to write an accessible and gripping story and they landed it really well

Something I think is a really interesting exercise is that player-controlled characters that don’t speak up much / at all (e.g. Chell from Portal) still actually have what constitutes a canon personality. They’re often perceived as blank slates, but they’re really not.
There are several things that, in a meta sense, will tell you about a character you’re controlling.
1. The hard parameters of the game.
Have you ever noticed, in Zelda games, there are a bunch of characters you’re incapable of attacking? No matter what lethal implements you flail in their vicinity, Link will never launch a damaging or killing strike on them. There are also some regions in-game where you, the player, are unable to make Link draw his sword.
Thing is, the guards do not corner Link upon entering a town and confiscate his sword. His equipment is not explicitly magic and only able to harm monsters. In fact, the divide between “enemy species” and “friendly species” is basically arbitrary- in Twilight Princess, for example, you can attack gorons with impunity right up until they become allies.
This makes it clear that Link is consciously staying his hand. While it’s a very simple statement to make about a character- Link will not consider attacking those he perceives as civilians or allies- it’s still a clear statement. Link might be a punk sometimes (the game does gleefully give you options to mess with people, such as parading around near-naked or standing on tables in Breath of the Wild or specifically taking out your lantern in Barnes’ bomb shop in Twilight Princess) but he is driven by a hard line of ethics. Furthermore, IIRC only a handful of games will allow you to steal and then, at specific opportunities. In Skyward Sword, an entire sidequest is started because, upon breaking someone’s chandelier, the plot-furthering thing to do is to go talk to the owner directly, suggesting a Link who isn’t morally opposed to cutting and running when someone’s justifiably mad at him, but who is more likely to (the reward and emphasis is heavier on) own up and apologize.
Out-of-universe, we can’t do these things because they’re not programmed into the game. In-universe, though, there’s actually nothing stopping them, making it a deliberate action on their part. This also will involve things like how the story progresses- to use Twilight Princess again as an example, while Link needs Rutela’s blessing to get the third fused shadow, and thus pragmatically needs to save her son, he also refuses to talk to Ilia about her memory or try to get her to come with him back to Ordon before saving Ralis. This suggests that his motivation is in part personal compassion.
Later events in the story also would suggest Link has a lingering grudge towards both the doctor and the knights that refused to help in the situation- advancing the plot requires you to threaten the doctor with his tab and then search his house behind his back and if you’re in wolf form in Castle Town- only available after getting Ralis to Kakariko- Link isn’t afraid to snap at the knights, though he doesn’t bite or kill them. He’s more willing to get rude with someone who offends his personal sense of ethics.
Furthermore, there’s a matter of how obstacles are presented to you, and what you’re encouraged to do in response. Zelda is a series that focuses on personal adventure, a great deal of travelling long-distance, puzzle-solving and dungeon-crawling. You’re rewarded for being inquisitive, clever, helping others, and poking around. While the sidequests aren’t mandatory, you will only get Link at his absolute best and brightest when he’s been roaming the wilderness and doing favors for people. And you also virtually never have a consistent home base to return to- most games make it clear you’re basically leaving home and staying away for a good period of time when you revisit. So an interpretation on Link that reads him as someone who lingers at home heavily and doesn’t want to leave, ever, is unsupported by canon.
This can even be sneakier than something tacitly unavailable to the player- consider an NPC or party member talking at great length in a somewhat uninteresting manner. Does the dialogue go all the way with perfect legibility? Does it scroll onward into the background, or get interrupted? Any of those options tell us something about the character and their relationship to the speech. Are they listening? Are they zoning out? Are they expressing active contempt or implicitly cutting off the speaker with a gesture or expression?
2. Superfluous Actions
This is technically under the umbrella of game parameters, but I wanted to give this some special attention. Unfailingly, there are things a player character will do either without the player’s input, or that the player can direct them to do with no obvious merit to them.
Abzu, as a game, has a large number of basically superfluous controls. The “interact” button, while useful, also lets out a chirp, and not only does this have a neat visual effect in other areas, if you have a drone accompanying you (as you do several times throughout the game) making the Diver chirp with nothing to interact with prompts the drone to chirp right back, even varying how many times they chirp in a way that seems to respond to how many you gave them, albeit not on a one-to-one ratio. Which is absolutely adorable.
Another button lets you do flips; a third allows you to ‘boost’, which can be used to jump out of the water. You can ride on the back of larger sea creatures. Pretty much none of these are actually required for the advancement of the game. You don’t have to sing to the drones, you certainly don’t have to repair all of them you find. Riding a creature is never necessary but in the steam version of the game you get multiple achievements for doing so. You can sit and meditate and watch the fish as long as you want.
All of this creates a very playful, compassionate, and inquisitive personality for your player character, the Diver. What’s more, encountering a dying shark at one point in the game, Diver, unprompted, will come over to rest their hand on the creature until it passes, and then bow their head and move on.
In Hollow Knight, at several points you’re able to sit beside someone; one of which is the last time, in-game, you’ll be able to see a character who is implied to either die, or simply abandon his weapon and wander off alone afterwards. Like the Abzu example, you’re given an achievement for sharing this moment with him. There’s no tangible in-game reward. And yet the game gives you the option to do so, when that option is not normally present. It tells us, whether we as players take or leave that option, Ghost- the character- considers this moment and this person special enough to at least consider something they don’t normally do.
Some superfluous actions can be very subtle. Things like a camera moving on its own, implying the character’s attention is pulled to something the player didn’t actively choose to look at. In several games in the Zelda series, Link will turn his eyes and head towards certain things of notice, which can tell us, if we’re stumped on a puzzle or how to proceed, that Link may have quietly figured it out faster than we did.
3. Flavor text
Unless the text is actively being provided by another party in-game, it’s fair to assume any way something is described reflects how a character feels about it. For example, in Hollow Knight, the in-game bestiary has comments added by several other parties, but it also has succinct explanations at the top of what the creature is. These comments seem to lack much personality compared to the deeper elements in the journal, but on one particular entry, the Sibling, the Hunter’s comments on the bottom make it clear he has never actually seen this creature before- while the top entry not only describes it, but conveys rather intimate knowledge about its origin.
This stands out, because the player character, Ghost, is familiar with the Siblings- they are basically the lingering spirits of dead vessels in the location Ghost was raised and abandoned. Since, again, the Hunter implies he’s never been to the bottom of the Abyss, it’s likely Ghost is even the one who specifically labeled that particular entry the “Sibling”.
In Breath Of The Wild, food is a major game mechanic as the primary healing and stat-buffing item, but, we are also given lavish and detailed descriptions of the flavor profile of each. There’s basically no two ways about the obvious evidence that this particular incarnation of Link, at least, is a very dedicated and educated foodie- though, apparently, not someone with such a sophisticated palate that he won’t scarf down something “so gross you can’t even look at it” or made with inedible ingredients.
This can even tie into the game parameters thing- given the simplicity of the cooking system in the game, it’s clear that Link’s experienced hands are guiding the player- we might pick a handful of ingredients and toss them into a pot, for example, but, for Link, it’s clear that he’s going through a lot of trouble to cut, pare, fricassee, saute, garnish, and plate his dishes appealingly, even with limited equipment. You can interpret that a lot of ways- are we assuming Link is the type who lovingly handcrafts tools from the materials he finds to take his cooking to the next level and carries a cooking kit with him regularly, or is he more the type who waited until he made it to a town to get distracted by a pretty knife set?
While I just finished talking up the game parameters as a form of characterization, you do have to make some accommodations for what makes a fun and streamlined game experience. The creators of Breath of the Wild didn’t feel the need to complicate the cooking system with other tools besides a big metal pot- but in-universe, we can enrich our read on the character because Link is clearly not just stewing, but cooking a bunch of different ways that would call for specialty tools, so, how and where is he getting them? That’s more of an interesting subject for personal interpretation, but, that’s one of my favorite parts of this- what canon gives us virtually never creates a complete picture, but it will virtually always point us in an entertaining and interesting direction. Perceiving Breath of the Wild’s Link as a blank slate, I might not think about his relationship with cooking tools, but looking at canon and that very few of the created meals look like campfire food- many of the dishes are on plates. Which raises the obvious implication Link is going out of his way to acquire dishware, carry it around with him, and clean and reuse it. (Even if, in a more realistic setting without a vast, inter-spatial inventory, that dishware would probably look more like travel carry containers, like cheesecloth packages tied with twine, jugs and flasks for elixirs, beverages and soups, wooden and metal boxes)
And that can be super useful for a fanfiction, roleplay, or other writing scenario- it implies something about Link’s daily routine. I could write a scenario with him carefully whittling a skewer, or scrubbing dishes in a bubbling stream. And that he’s so interested and motivated by food, he probably does carry soap or something else to keep his hands and plates clean, given Hyrule’s level of technology he probably knows what germs are, and someone so proud of their cooking wouldn’t sicken themselves or potential dinner guests by using unclean containers. It becomes a springing ground for a lot of other headcanons.
4. Tone of the game
Every game has certain attitudes and worldviews that emanate through the setting, as well as a sort of overarching atmosphere that presides over the story. While it can be funny to imagine the protagonist of a moody, atmospheric piece as jarringly contrasting it, unless given evidence to point to that, it’s not going to be canon-supported.
Chell, from Portal, is resistant to many of these forms of characterization. She provides no flavor text, she doesn’t have a lot of superfluous actions besides tacitly refusing to catch Wheatley in early Portal 2, and while we do have the benefit of a bonus comic, Lab Rat, that gives some insight into her behavior, as well as the questionably accurate portraits that suggest how Rattman, at least, sees her, there’s not a lot.
However, it’s pretty much fair to assume that she’s a smart aleck- not just because the game gives you plenty of opportunities to, and in some situations, runs on the premise that you will try to spite and disobey the various people controlling Chell’s situation at the time*- but because the entire tone of both games is primarily snarky. Everyone you run into is some flavor of wise guy. Everybody’s a little/lot sarcastic, everybody’s a little/lot eccentric.
The one way that Chell obviously breaks from the mold is she’s not highly talkative- and this is impossible to miss because her refusal to talk is called out canonically all the time.
So we can guess that Chell being a wise guy- reinforced by her other actions- is per setting standard, and she’s probably a little weird, because everybody here is, we can tell that she doesn’t love to hear herself talk or is especially prone to monologuing like many of the other characters in her setting, because this contrast is actively called out, and makes her noteworthy and interesting as the protagonist.
Comparatively, Ghost from Hollow Knight is characterized as a very willful and brash creature through their environment- many of the areas in the game are pointed to as appealing to those that seek glory and aren’t afraid to put their life on the line to get it. While challenging the Mantis Lords is essential to proceed into Deepnest, that is not made apparent anywhere besides the Lords’ throne room themselves; while talking to Quirrel outside the village gates has him muse that Ghost probably intends to challenge the Lords.
* while you do get achievements- something I pointed to earlier in the Abzu example as an inclination something is more in line with their personality- for listening to GLaDOS and Wheatley to a fault, those actions end in Chell’s immediate death- since in-universe she is mortal and has no means of respawning, it’s fair to assume those are dead ends and thus, not actions she takes, just something the writers threw in because they thought it would be funny.
Basically a good rule of thumb for all of this is evaluate how its framed and the context- there is no one gospel of characterization here and especially in more meta frameworks like Undertale, characterizing Frisk requires building a comprehensive read on how to separate Frisk as their own person from you, the Player, and your will- since you have an acknowledged in-universe presence and the ability to override Frisk’s inclinations.

Sheena W., Instructor
Sheena Wilson is a CSL instructor who is passionate about getting her students involved with the community. Read more about her courses and involvement with CSL.
Could you please introduce yourself and your relationship with CSL?
My name is Sheena Wilson, I started teaching at the University of Alberta in 1999. I have been teaching at Campus St. Jean (CSJ) and my background is in film, media and literature. I study how human rights abuses get represented over time, and how they get represented differently over time as communities take back their narratives. My work always has to do with women’s issues, and social justice issues. About 15 years ago I started getting interested in oil sands because I am from Alberta. Now a lot of my courses are based around writing and communication classes, media studies. So we study the way these narratives get mobilized, and the practical and theoretical implications.
What courses do you teach with CSL?
Last semester I taught three classes. Two Anglais (ANGL) 126 courses, and ANGL 122. At north campus these classes would be known as Writing Studies, and we study media and communication studies. I have worked with so many CSL classes in the past!
Could you trace your involvement with CSL?
I have been involved with CSL for a long time, especially at CSJ. I was really into doing CSL and promoting it to other instructors. But recently I think I had a break — it had been maybe 5 years since I had done CSL. My research and teaching style has always involved the community, and I always have community members come into my classroom, but it had somehow been a few years since I had done CSL in my classes. Basically, I have been doing CSL things for a long, long time!
What are some of the community partners that your courses have been paired with?
Back in the day, I was partnered with the Greater Edmonton Foundation working with seniors which was interesting because that was in a different context, where I was teaching an upper level course on women’s narratives.
Percentage wise, seniors homes usually house more women than men, so in this class we talked about thinking through historical narratives and historical feminist trajectories but talking about womens experiences through those years. This is important because I think it is quite different from thinking how women used to be “this way”, or that they used to think politically “this way” and it's usually more complicated than that — you get more complicated stories! The students would go and talk to the women, and help write stories up for the community partners because these women definitely had stories to document and pass onto their families.
I always loved debriefing with students about their visits with the seniors. There is one story that has always stood out to me. The students asked the women “How did you decide how many children to have?”, and like literally these senior citizens, like much older women who were like “What, decide how many kids to have?!” That was not a question they could understand. So the students and I discussed that and how these ideas around choice we have now were not decisions these women made. Back then you didn't really decide how many kids to have, you just had kids!
More recently my students worked with FAFA, which is the ‘Fédération des aînés franco-albertains’. With this placement my goal was to teach students that they have knowledge, that they might not necessarily think of as knowledge, or other disciplines might not fully think of as knowledge. As we think about climate justice and energy transition I think there are some popular discourses like: “The baby boomers have ruined the planet, they were such abusers of power and energy!” And it's true that these systems technologies came out at that time - but I say, I bet if you talk to a bunch of your grandparents that lived in rural Alberta, they weren’t exactly the 1% benefitting off this exploitation of resources. They probably weren't using many resources either! The question I asked students was, “What can we learn from them?” Like, “How do you live without all the plastics, and things they hold knowledge about how one lives differently”. I tried to push conversations that way - but also FAFA is doing a large documentation on Francophones in Alberta and what their lives were like — and it's not necessarily focused on climate justice - but we try to sneak in those climate justice history questions.
We also partnered with Radio Cite, which is a Francophone community radio station with a theoretical media class. In this class we looked at the role of community radio and how communications functions and how it is a business, and who owns these businesses typically, and how a community radio functions. As well, how we could mobilize community radio to help mobilize the climate justice movement, for example. How we can do it to inform the Francophones in the city, or online. So that was a very interesting relationship, and I hope the students were able to maintain it afterwards. During the placement, some students created little radio documentaries (5-7 minutes) on particular issues that they were concerned about. Others were interviewed and became more comfortable with the technology. In general there was acknowledgement to what they were listening to, and what dollars paid for what, that made them a bit more savvy about the mainstream media they are taking in.
Another partner was the Solar Power Investment Cooperative in Edmonton who is an organization trying to create different types of economics around alternative energy that benefits communities. So the students analyzed what a Community Benefit Agreement is, which is interesting to think through if you are thinking about energy transition. For example, what happens if you take back the power in your community - literally, in all the meanings of the word power - what can that do? Right now we don’t own our sources of power, but what if we did, and what if the profits were community benefits? If they paid for daycare programming, or subsidized a school, or built a park, or reinvested into different energy transition things, or created different kinds of jobs because you are supporting the local community, and those profits feed back into a community and not a multinational corporation somewhere.
Climate Justice Edmonton was another partner, they were not an original partner, but were added on a little bit later. In class we looked at speculating about energy futures, like how do we speculate about the future - speculative finance is one of those things we take very seriously - why not our energy futures? So the question is, “How do we speculate in the stories we tell, and how are our potential futures already informed by some base assumptions?”
I sometimes say that we won’t die of the climate crisis, we will die of lack of imagination - because we cannot imagine how to live differently. So I said to my students, speculation is hard work, and I am not psychic. I am just suggesting that we speculate but 1969 was a big year and 2019 is wrapping up to be a big year. At the time there was all of the climate justice organizing happening by the youth, so we started preparing for the climate march. No students were obliged to go but we started to look at the different ways of participating, and how different bodies can participate in the climate march. Highlighting that different bodies live at different intersections of power dynamics. So people who were not able to attend could follow on social media, and how did those conversations influence what they believed happened, versus stories from the ground. Like how do you use communications technologies, like social media, how you use your own influence when you tell stories. So, I had brought in Climate Justice Edmonton to talk about what it means to be a community organizer, what it means to mobilize. So the students asked for Climate Justice Edmonton to be a partner.
What was the Energy Expo, and how did it come together?
At the end of the classes we had an Energy Expo with all of the classes. It was a co-construct event, where the students were in charge. The students would ask me, “How many tables are there going to be?” I would reply, “How many tables are there going to be?” Because it was their event, they were the youth who were putting it on.
I made sure that community leaders and the Deans were invited, people from CSL, and their community partners came. They also got a few pages spread in the Francophone newspaper and they were also covered by Radio Cite. As well, I really appreciated the people from CSL coming to the Energy Fair, it was really nice to have their support!
How does CSL fit with the courses you teach?
So for me really, I ask what is the point of the Academy, but to enrich public conversation and thought. I really like those relationships to be much more fluid and I like to invite people to the Academy and be out in the community. I like to see the students go out of the Academy into the community and they can see what the practical application of what they are learning is. Especially when you’re teaching a class like English where they might have a certain idea where they are completely subjective, and that they don’t really need this subject. When students start to see how important it is for them to actually communicate what they know and learn about, they see the value of what they are learning. For example, some of the Education students have to think about training students for a future that is a bit bankrupt currently, right? Some of the Sciences students did some really innovative stuff, by really studying sophisticated science literature, and they wrote those up in ways that were accessible, through the communications tools they were given in class. This is important because I also argue that we can think about technology and science as discourses that will save us from climate change but realistically I understand pretty well from my own research that anything that is in research and development is 7 to 10 years out. We have to respond to climate change right now, because they are saying by 2030 we need to have a lot of these transitions made - so we have to transition with the technologies we have, so I say, “What is out there? What is it we can glean from what already exists?” We shouldn’t always be thinking that there is something out there that can solve this problem, we have what we need to solve this problem! In fact, many of the technologies can solve the problem but then create other problems. So what are the social changes? Energy transition is a social problem, it is not a technical problem, it is a social problem first and foremost. We need to start thinking differently about how we live together and how we live in relationships with other species, how we think about all of our anthropocentric ways of being in the world. So my answer to that question: I mean why are students going to university? What is university for, I guess?
What do the students learn from their placement, and how does CSL impact the student experience?
The students learn a lot of things and some of them, I don’t think that they know they learn! They learn how to take initiative, first of all — because they have to walk across the street. Part of it is that a lot of the time non-profits are understaffed and underfunded, and they really have to walk across the street and take initiative and sometimes find a place. So they have to figure out a place for themselves at the organization.
Also, the students learn the relevance of doing what they are doing. Students often want to understand how the things they are learning are somehow going to inform their future. Even though I am of the opinion that not everything you learn has to have some sort of employment end goal, I think it does help students understand why they have to take certain courses, and what the value of that contributes to their overall education.

The Importance of B2B Storytelling
Telling and listening to stories comes naturally to people across the globe. From ancient to modern times, storytelling has remained a constant throughout the evolution of the human race.
Stories in different forms get passed from one generation to another and exist across various channels in multiple iterations. There are simple, linear ones and stories with dizzying complexity and both types keep bringing interested audiences back for more.
Storytelling works because people have the innate desire to learn about certain developments that might be relevant to them. As humans we’re on a constant quest for knowledge and stories help us satisfy the urge to learn and be entertained. The best stories allow their audiences to immerse themselves completely, focusing solely on the story’s universe.
Over time, people have learned that one story can be molded and transformed across a bunch of different platforms. Each storytelling format has its pros and cons, and great storytellers have learned how to maximize every platform’s strengths to benefit their cause.
Storytelling also provides an alternate reality, especially if it’s fiction. Meanwhile, nonfiction stories, particularly the successful ones, are read because they motivate and inspire. People buy into stories because of our inclination to make sense of everything.
We use stories to build connections between related concepts through what we’ve learned and experienced, which in essence means engaging our audiences in a way that’s both surprising and familiar to them.
Why Storytelling Is Powerful
Storytelling is a powerful tool for marketing, but let’s take a look at why it works from a psychological standpoint:
Form of Communication
Putting types and platforms aside, storytelling shares information. The main purpose of storytelling is to share plots and narratives that hold deeper meaning.
From history to mystery, it’s all part of communicating something important. Storytelling connects people because of the common ground it builds for all of the people that interact with the story.
Collaboration and Connection
Storytelling births in its audience an understanding of other backgrounds (social or cultural) and deep emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, and joy. The act of reading or listening to a story creates an experience, which can affect how people think, especially when making decisions.
Because of the massive effect of storytelling, it’s no surprise that it has become a powerful tool in the world of B2B marketing. Marketers can communicate their product or service better through storytelling. At the same time, it bypasses the concept (or even the need) of a hard sell. People are drawn in by story without being explicitly aware that a product or service is being sold to them.
Listen here why I think B2B Storytelling is so important for B2B Marketers:
youtube
B2B marketers found subtlety in storytelling. The modern marketing industry has shifted to appeal to emotions instead of bombarding their audiences with self-promotional tactics. Businesses are now investing in creating brand stories about their product or service. Instead of hard selling, they attract prospects through the value of a story.
Enhances Imagination
Storytelling taps different sections of the brain to implant thoughts and feelings about concepts, making them more apparent and memorable. Brands can take advantage of this by transforming their sales process into an attractive visual experience.
Genuine emotions, presence, and behavioral responses are all the result of good storytelling. Rather than being spectators of a narrative, storytelling gives its audience the chance to become participants, interpreting the true meaning of the story on their own terms.
Order and Thinking
Good storytelling follows a specific structure: beginning → middle → end, which is shaped like an arc because a good story must not begin nor end haphazardly. This makes the audience think in a very specific pattern, which, in turn, makes the story easier to consume.
It’s natural for people to make sense of something by relating it to the different aspects of their lives. Also, by making space in their thoughts for that something, it becomes easier to remember and absorb the message.
Storytelling doesn’t just explicitly tell a story. It’s made to create waves of conversation and interpretation. It extends itself to be an experience to whoever the consumer may be.
Importance of B2B Storytelling
In reality, successful B2B content marketing strategies are not just about logic, technical processes, and facts. The world has come to realize that it’s about connecting with people on an emotional/psychological level.
According to research by Google in partnership with Motista and CEB, 50% of B2B buyers are more likely to buy if they can connect emotionally with your brand. It starts with your business’ goals, objectives, mission, and vision. If a B2B buyer sees that there’s a common ground, they identify with your brand, which creates a sense of trust.
Based on the same study, 71% of B2B buyers purchase when they see personal value in your business. Along with that, 68.8% of the B2B buyers surveyed are even willing to pay a higher price to do business with a brand they believe in.
But what does “personal value” mean in B2B marketing?
It’s the professional, social, and emotional benefits you experience in addition to the actual product.
Simply put, emotions elevate customer satisfaction and customer experience. Based on a study by The Good Relations Group, the honesty of the vendor plays a big part at 93%. Moreover, personal recommendations also drive purchase action at 91%.
Although these are not explicit emotions such as happiness or sadness, they are deeply rooted emotions that are powerful enough to influence decision making. At the end of the day, purchasing is a risk. You need to trust the seller that he/she is not taking advantage of you.
Further, positive emotions increase a customer’s loyalty, improving the chances of them becoming brand advocates. In an age where customer loyalty is everything, businesses should take every chance they get.
Emotions and the Customer in B2B Storytelling
“Your customers feel before they think.” – Dan Hill
Consider the scale of your customer’s responsibility. For B2B purchases, it’s likely that the decision will affect not just them, but the entire business, so more effort goes into the decision-making process. This means that B2B buyers require a higher perceived value than their B2C counterparts.
So as a B2B seller, you should consider this. Tap the emotions that are of value to them. Will this decision improve their business’ efficiency? Luckily, you can figure out what motivates your target market simply by listening to them.
There are various channels you can use to research your audiences such as social media, surveys, phone calls, or even a simple email questionnaire. By doing this, you can get actionable insights from the source. No one knows your customers better than they know themselves.
An essential key to a successful B2B storytelling is effective listening. Don’t ignore what your customers are saying. Rather, listen to them before and after implementation. Go back to the drawing board every after evaluation and lay out possible points of improvement.
Storytelling humanizes your business. Surely, you can publish dozens of studies and whitepapers about how awesome your product or service is, but if there’s a disconnect emotionally, you’re going to turn off your customers.
The traditional view of B2B marketing aims to keep things professional in a very sterile manner. If you’re able to inject some personality and emotion into your communications, you’ll give your brand a much better chance of standing out from the clutter.
Components of B2B Storytelling
So, how do you seamlessly incorporate storytelling into your B2B marketing strategies? Here are three essential factors that every story needs:
Conflict
You can formulate the conflict by understanding your customer based on the customer journey you’ve created.
Identify their pain points and use it as inspiration for a compelling B2B story. Present their problems and issues in a creative and attention-grabbing manner. Make sure that you don’t offend them in the process.
Take your time in your research because a misrepresentation of your customer’s conflict can spell disaster for your B2B storytelling effort. Furthermore, knowing their real problems and issues will give you a solid understanding of what makes them tick.
Climax
After establishing your customer’s conflict, it’s time to match it with the solution that your product or service provides. It’s always a spectacular moment when you address your customer’s problems. This is where your business becomes the hero in the story by resolving the story’s conflict.
Don’t be afraid to involve feelings in B2B storytelling. Although there’s quite a stern ambiance in the B2B industry when compared to B2C, storytelling simply doesn’t work without emotional resonance.
Resolution
As usual, you must have the perfect curtain call to the story. Describe how your customer’s life changed after using your product or service. Feel free to go into detail. Don’t settle for generic satisfaction. If possible, show numbers to quantify the value of the benefit.
These three major points create a far more immersive customer experience. It elevates the typical process of engaging with your brand to a memorable and enriching one.
B2B Storytelling Success
The following companies are great B2B Storytelling examples and how stories can help your brand:
LinkedIn
LinkedIn, known as the job hosting website, used the power of storytelling in their “Picture Yourself” campaign to create inspiring stories about some of their members.
The idea was to leverage the knowledge and experience of successful business professionals to create a valuable story for LinkedIn’s audience to learn from. What they managed to do was build a portal of quality business insights that increased the trust and relevance of the LinkedIn brand.
Cisco
Humor goes a long way. You might not imagine that a huge tech company would choose humor as their B2B storytelling core concept. Humor can have a huge impact because of the emotion it elicits from the customer.
But keep in mind that despite the lighthearted tone, they always stay true to principles of storytelling, from conflict, to climax, to resolution.
Kickstarter
Their B2B storytelling skills lie in all the success stories of the businesses they’ve helped to create. In other words, the users themselves build the storytelling of Kickstarter. This looks like a simple core, but it’s very effective because the people see their dream businesses realized. “We help people tell their stories.”
Intel
Intel found the key to making technology more relatable. The tech giant has made technology more human than ever before.
With the help of Toshiba, they took B2B storytelling to the next level by creating a series of short films called “The Beauty Inside.” The interactive nature of the film gives the audience a chance to play the lead role in the story, making it easy to understand why it’s gotten more than 70 million views since its release.
Zendesk
If you think that B2B storytelling only allows success for real stories, then think again. Zendesk took a different path when they created this fake band named “Zendesk Alternative,” which is a semi-grungy band, and accompanied this faux-band with a website of their own.
It caught people’s attention, to say the least, and Zendesk looked like a genius by going out of the box and being completely unexpected.
Microsoft
While other companies look for stories outside their company, Microsoft looked inside, and it worked. In 2010, they hired a guy that’s the master of storytelling as the Chief Storyteller. They completely revamped their content marketing strategy and published new content through different social media channels in a series titled “Microsoft Stories.”
By projecting an excellent company culture and employee engagement, other businesses found Microsoft to be the company they can trust and do business with. This worked so well that they turned their media center into a portal called Microsoft Story Labs.
Conclusion
B2B storytelling makes a brand real to its audience. Leading B2B CMOs are using stories to reach and engage new audiences.
A good story lets customers know your brand and what it stands for. It also bridges the gap between your business and your consumers. In addition, storytelling adds an extra layer to your customer care by recognizing customer’s stories and using them to inspire more people.
From what used to be a mushy marketing strategy, B2B storytelling has transformed into a leading tactic in Content Marketing. So, get out there and start connecting with your audience on an emotional level.

This gives this layout an capability diy pallet projects to adapt to the wishes of the circle of relatives living in it and healthy the terrain, regardless of what the topography of the lot it's constructed on.
The foundations or basements also are a easy count number for these houses. That's due to the fact we have the easy square design. With a square layout, there is continually an smooth manner to aid the ground machine with all of the piers or submit flippantly spaced.
Roofs on this style also can vary in shape. The most commonplace roof for the primary rectangle of the house is the easy gable, hip, 1/2 hip, or even a flat roof. But if the other appendages are introduced, you may have multiple roofs in anything route the houses extensions take place to move. I've visible some constructed with angled appendages at 30 to 45 levels.
But the layout even lends itself to more class with the aid of including a steep roof pitch that another ½ tale can be introduced to the residence making it a story and a half. From that steep roof, wood pallet projects dormers may be positioned to add even extra splendor to the house. One of the prettiest Ranchers I've ever seen had this steep roof configuration with a huge middle dormer and smaller dormers on every aspect of the big one. It become also decorated out with a few of the traditional brick work, columns, and trims of the colonial houses. It was a sight to behold and the proprietor turned into very proud.
