honestly, i think you are not only right but that this was explicitly stated by the film, and here's why! 🏳️🌈💘🕵️♂️
(i just responded to a very good post about this like 30 minutes ago but I have more to say because of COURSE i do 😅)
So i totally get why this would be unclear after a lifetime of Disney/Supernatural-brand homophobic gaslighting and erasure, but that take of yours isn't just speculation!!
Cinema has its own language, and that language has a shorthand that people who grew up with TV and movies can often instinctively follow.
One of the primary building blocks of that language is that we know as an audience that what a director chooses to show is no accident.
So if a camera lingers on a key for 5 whole seconds, then the audience will automatically know that the key must be relevant to the story. In a good movie, everything shown is shown for a reason. Never has this been more true than in a Benoit Blanc mystery movie.
And when a writer/director chooses to show two older effeminate men sharing an expensive gorgeous Paris apartment, while also explicitly establishing that they are friends with people like hairdressers and real-life gay icon Stephen Sondheim....
Well. In my opinion, such a filmmaker is stating the characters' queerness as clearly as if it had been spoken aloud and much more smoothly.
Which means, to me at least, that Rian Johnson is explicitly stating that these characters are queer. He is just using the language of film rather than spoken language! Which is good filmmaking!! I love these movies!!!
Anyway, I HAVE STRONG FEELINGS ABOUT THIS MOVIE I LOVE IT A LOT AND I HOPE YOU FIND GREAT JOY IN THIS FRUITY LITTLE DETECTIVE MAN AND HIS DILFY HUSBAND ❤❤❤
--
Edit because I had a thought that [Benoit Blanc voice] might help ta untANgle the twisted web of viewin' media outsahd of tha various homophobic influences that affect how we view queer narratives:
Think about Kathryn Hahn's politician character Claire Debella.
What is her marriage like? Is it good? Is it solid? Warm? Loving? Would you say she is very close to her husband?
If you thought something like, "No, it actually seems strained and distant. Like she doesn't have time for him." - Then, I agree!
But wait! How do we know that? None of the characters ever say it out loud!
Well, we know because it is very clearly communicated through the language of film! The script, acting, and framing all work together to paint a clear and intentional picture. For example:
Claire doesn't answer her phone when her husband calls
Claire only ever speaks to him dismissively and with irritation; and after the first scene, she never mentions him again
The director set up the shots with Claire's husband so that he is lingering awkwardly behind her while she ignores him to focus on Miles' box. In fact, I'm not even sure she ever looks him in the face at all!
Now, does this mean that every woman who doesn't pick up the phone each time her husband calls is in a broken marriage? No!! But in a movie? It at least means that the relationship is on shaky ground.
Similarly, it is my opinion that while in real life, there have probably been many men in their 50s who have chosen to share a gorgeous Paris apartment with a view just because they are pals; and while it is entirely possible for a straight cis man from the deep American South to wear an ascot outside of the 1970s..........
Your honor, this movie is saying the man is gay.

I just, godsbless, I don't know why it means so much to me that they are married and it was framed in this way rather than explicitly mentioned.
Your honour my lawyer says they're gay and in love
(Thank you @andthebeanstalk, I really fucking appreciate all the effort you have gone to with these explanations, gods bless your cotton socks buddy 💚💚)
