Throwback Thursday

My first posts about Roswell, New Mexico upon seeing the first few episodes months ago were about some of the racial tones. My fears and concerns were from day one were that the fandom would devolve into the unfortunate but usual patterns fandom does.

Racial and implicit bias. Misogyny. Misogynoir. I had concerns for a couple of characters, but I knew Maria would likely be treated the worse. I hoped it wouldn't be the case but voiced those concerns nonetheless.

I remember the responses back then. That it was too early for that. That everything shouldn't be turned into race. That we had to wait and see. That this fandom was better than that and wouldn't get that ugly.

Because a show with this much diversity and social awareness couldn't be a problem. Because a fandom with such diversity shouldn't be a problem.

And the past few months have been interesting as I watched some of the same people who reassured me or chastised me back then get sucked into this Hive or echo chamber of toxicity and do the exact things they said wouldn't happen.

And I spoke on it here and there. Sometimes articulately, sometimes passionately, and I came from genuine places of trying to spread awareness and triggered places too. I hate admitting the last part. Because it's supposed to be fiction and fun, until real life microaggressions in bulk interfere with your escapism. And reminds you that there never is escapism in the end, but I digress.

Triggered because not only did this fandom sink fast into dangerous and harmful patterns, but most of the fandom didn't see it. They actively ignored it. They didn't hear the dog whistles. They didn't grasp the slippery slope of coded language. But worse yet, they actively gaslit those pointing it out.

Suddenly discussing fiction feels all too real. The hot takes are damaging, hurtful, and admittedly scary. Scary in what lies beneath them and what it means. Scary in what it fosters.

Suddenly the aggressive sentiments about characters ease into something else entirely. The language becomes increasingly more disturbing.

And the bolder some became with it while going unchecked, the more people got sucked into it and normalized it. One could write a socio theses on this fandom in all seriousness. It's fascinating and disturbing.

And I watched as people basking in their wokeness I presume assuming that to support or idolize one thing meant they couldn't be problematic in tearing apart something else. I watched the same people who reassured me back then actively participate in everything I feared and others who reassured me disappear or fall back because this fandom is a beast that chews up and spits out joy for drama and shitstirring. It's a killjoy. It steals people's ability to enjoy something they love.

And I watched the character assassination of characters, but then of actors, and showrunners, and other fans. Real living, breathing people with feelings, or a job to do, who are proud of their work and their craft or those who had the audacity to think differently.

I've seen it celebrated. Harassing other people is celebrated proudly and shared like it's a badge of honor. Because we've become too accessible to each other-- fans, creators, actors, but we also lose objective -- emboldened by hiding behind a screen. It makes people inconsiderate and brings out ugly sides of them. It makes people unfiltered and incapable of holding themselves accountable or by certain standards.

I have seen a stunning disregard for people's identities, experiences, thoughts, voices, mental health, and personhood.

There has been a lack of compassion, empathy, sympathy, respect, and decency.

I have watched people get seriously and deeply hurt by this fandom because it became something bigger and more psychologically damaging as the ugliness bled into real life. This ugliness that is pervasive.

I have seen people give pieces of themselves away in a manner they wouldn't dream of to the point of oversharing in some misguided attempt to have their words, their feelings actually heard and received because their voices matter. I have been that person, so I know.

I cannot believe this actually became a legitimate thing, but there is an astounding level of smear campaigning tactics and "fake news." In a fandom? Like that's an actual thing that drives this fandom a lot, and it's insane. It's been like a micro version of the trump campaign. Scary thing is I'm only partly joking.

I have watched an increase in the disrespect of art. There are many incredibly talented gif makers and writers and such, and the disrespect on their art is ... who does that? Why? You cannot demand a service and then bite the hand that feeds you.

There has been a lot of bullying and also a lot of gaslighting by bullies -- those who instigate and then use someone defending themselves or reacting as fodder for drama or to accuse them of bullying for responding back. It's very childish.

And the worst part is much of this isn't an outlier or a fluke. It's the official fandom culture. It's the norm and the status quo. All of this ugliness and disharmony and constant negativity.

My personal view from the beginning is that fandom should be an inclusive place with space for all to coexist happily. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but must respect that everyone is entitled to their opinions. Everyone must expect differing opinions.

But also everyone deserves a positive fandom experience where any and everything they love isn't eviscerated and picked apart all the time. Where they aren't picked apart and eviscerated all the time for enjoying it.

At some point the barrage of it against something simultaneously viewed as minor and insignificant is like kicking down. Just because it's different.

This fandom is not an inclusive place when simply existing with different opinions that differ from the majority in whatever way is viewed as an attack -- when existence is defiance.

And this fandom was never an inclusive place, and that is very unfortunate.

But I was wrong about my initial concerns and fears. It's not that they weren't validated. I didn't need to be a DeLuca to see the writing on the wall there.

No I was wrong because this is actually far worse than I ever anticipated.

Fandom should be fun, and most of this isn't fun at all. Aren't y'all tired?
