A/N: This fic was a wip for so long. I tried writing it as a Jared x Reader story but could never get it quite right. So I changed it. It is now sorta part of my Padackles universe, but as the only one it is set in the future. The year is 2029. I hope you guys enjoy this.
No hate towards anyone intended. I love all the actors and their families. This is all done for fun and giggles.
Thanks to the amazing @blacktithe7 for betaing this silly story for me.
***My fics are not to be saved nor posted on any other sites without my express written permission.***
Gen had been looking forward to this day for a while. She didn’t get as much time to just hang around the Ackles’ house as she did when they were younger, when her and Danneel’s husbands were working together every day on Supernatural. Their families had managed to remain close though. Just like they had with many of the cast and crew from the show. They were all very much an extended family, that Gen was more than grateful to be allowed a part off.
“Hey Aunt Gen,” JJ greeted her as she ran down the stairs, seemingly in a hurry, just like every 16 year old girl always was. “Did Uncle Jared pick Dad up yet?” She looked sheepishly around the house, making Gen frown slightly, wondering what she was up too.
“Hi JJ. Yeah they just left. They…” Gen started but was interrupted by JJ, who was now practically bouncing with joy.
“Great,” she replied before bellowing through the house, leaving no doubt in Gen’s mind who her father was. Not that anyone could ever be in doubt with her reddish blond hair, pouty lips and green eyes. The girl was a looker alright.
“MOM. I AM HEADING OUT,” she bellowed only to have Danneel answer her back, agreeing to her departure from somewhere in the kitchen.
“See you Aunt Gen,” JJ smiled at her before running out of the front door. Gen looked after her for a few seconds, still wondering why it had been so important to her to make sure Jensen had left the house before she blasted out of there like her pants had caught fire. Gen let out a deep sigh, mentally preparing herself for when her daughter reached that age. 12 wasn’t all that far off from 16, and it would be nice if time would slow just a little. Not that Gen didn’t love JJ, because she did. JJ was a great girl and easy for a teenager. Still, she had the temper and the moodswings to go with her age. Jensen had probably said something that pissed her off last night even though that rarely happened. JJ was a daddy’s girl if Gen had ever seen one, even more so than her own Odette.
Gen shrugged and closed the door after the girl before walking through the house to see your best friend. “Hi Dani,” she greeted, feeling a big genuine smile spread across her face as soon as she saw her. The smile was mirrored on Danneel’s face as she rushed towards her, wrapping in a big hug, just like Jensen hugged Jared before they had taken off.
“Gen, I missed you so much,” Danneel practically shrieked into her ear, making her half laugh and half flinch in pain.
“I missed you more,” Gen joked before letting her go, looking around the house for a set of rambunctious 13 year olds, who rarely strayed far from each other.
Gen remembered when they were little. They had been born only a few months before Odette. Being pregnant at the same time had caused her and Danneel to grown even closer. They already shared a strong bond before that, both having married a set of overgrown children, granted Gen’s was more childish than Danneel’s if you were to make a competition out of it. Not that Gen would ever want Jared any other way. He was the father of her 3 beautiful children and her husband of 19 years. He had been there for her through ups and downs, through heartache and happiness, just like Jensen had for Danneel. Gen knew that she and Danneel were both very lucky. They had married amazing men that had not only given them a family of their own, but also given them each other. Had it not been for them and their bond, she and Danneel would most likely never have met. She was now Gen’s best friend, and there was not much the two of them didn’t share, sometimes much to the grief of their husbands. However, they knew that even through their whining, they loved that their two wives were as much sisters by choice as they themselves were brothers.
“Where are you hiding the twins?” Gen asked, while Danneel went back to preparing dinner. She was a great cook, and she loved being in the kitchen. Actually it was a wonder her husband hadn’t gotten fat yet.
“They are at a friend’s house. It amazes me sometimes that they still chose to do almost everything together,” Danneel smiled as Gen sat down at the counter. She knew better than to ask Danneel if she could help. Even if she allowed it, she would still shoo her out of the way after a few minutes. The only one she seemed able to peacefully share a kitchen space with was Jensen, and even that had taken them years.
“What about your kiddos? Enjoying the weekend with their grandparents?” Danneel asked with a smile, looking up from her cooking.
“Yeah Tom, Shep and Dad are out fishing, and Odette and Mom are on a shopping spree,” Gen grinned, before remembering Danneel’s oldest strange behavior earlier. “What about JJ? Where was she heading too?” Gen asked curiously, causing Danneel to let out a sudden laugh as she put the chicken into the oven.
“Oh that’s right. You’re in for a story,” Danneel smirked, washing her hands and sitting down across from her best friend. “JJ got a boyfriend.”
“Oh I bet Jensen loves that,” Gen laughed, sending Jared a loving thought, not doubting what his reaction would be the first time Odette brought home a boy. Even if Jensen was somewhat more scary than her goofy husband, the poor lad would also have two very protective older brothers to deal with.
“That’s not even the best part,” Danneel snorted with laughter. “Remember West getting into UT here in Austin?”
Gen’s eyes widen a little as Danneel continued her story. “Well of course you do. Tom has been hanging out with him, but apparently JJ offered to show him around,” Danneel smirked, “but according to JJ, West was able to bring out a new side of Austin to her, or so she said.”
“JJ is dating West Collins?” Gen tried to hold back her laughter, but she couldn’t when Danneel once again started laughing.
“How did Jensen find out?” Gen managed to ask in between fits of laughter. “I assume he did since JJ was so worried about him being home before she stormed out of here?”
“Oh yeah he found out. JJ confessed to me she was seeing someone, but begged me not to tell Jensen,” Danneel grinned, “of course I couldn’t keep that from him, but I convinced him to be cool about it and trust JJ. We raised a good kid.”
Gen nodded as she listened to Danneel, trying her hardest not to rush her story. “Only Jensen came across them down at the lake. They were walking hand in hand and being all cute. If I am to believe JJ, which I do, Jensen threw a fit and embarrassed her, dragging her home after scaring poor West so badly he called Vicky, who called me,” Danneel laughed.
“Ohmygod,” Gen clapped a hand over her mouth, desperately trying to keep from laughing. “How about Misha? How is he taking all of this?”
Danneel smirked, leaning back in her seat, preparing to tell Gen her favourite part of the story.
“Go to your room. We’ll talk about this later,” Jensen groaned at his clearly furious daughter who stormed right past her mom.
“You married an asshole!” she snarled as she passed Danneel, causing her to gasp. She had never heard her daughter talk about her dad or anyone like that before.
“Justice Jay!” Jensen roared after her, but JJ didn’t turn around. She just continued her flight up the stairs, screaming back before the door slammed.
“I’ll talk to Mom! I am never speaking to you again!” Her voice was high pitched, and Danneel could tell she was on the verge of tears.
“Can you believe that?” Jensen turned to Danneel, clearly expecting her to instantly be on his side without knowing what was going on.
“Jensen, did you really have to be so hard on them?” Danneel tried carefully, causing Jensen to glare furiously at her.
“Excuse me? Did you hear what she just called me?”
Danneel sighed. “Yeah I did. I’ll talk to her about that, but Jensen, you ran from your car to scream at her boyfriend in public before dragging her home. You can’t blame the girl for being pissed at you. Hell, had it been me, I would have strangled you in the car,” Danneel tried to reason with her husband, who just looked at her in equal parts anger and confusion, until Danneel elaborated. “Vicky called me. West called her in tears. Jensen, you were really hard on him.”
“He was kissing my daughter!” Jensen defended himself, only getting an eye roll back from Danneel.
“She’s 16 Jensen. At least it is someone we know…” she sighed just before Jensen audibly growled, not unlike an angry bear. Danneel was sure had Jared been nearby, he would have ran for the hills, thinking an actual bear was in the house.
“Where are you going?” Danneel required, sounding somewhat annoyed as Jensen rushed past her into the living room.
“To resolve this,” Jensen groaned, pulling out his phone as he paced the floor, and Danneel instantly send him a hard glare.
“Jensen Ross Ackles, if you are calling West to…” Danneel started, instantly feeling protective of the boy she had thought of as an honorary nephew for all of his life.
“Relax. I’m calling his dad,” Jensen hissed before Misha answered the phone. “Misha? Hi it’s Jensen. Did you hear?”
“You screaming at my son?” Misha answered dryly. “Yeah I heard.”
Jensen didn’t pay attention to his tone. He was too caught up in the huge problem at hand, or what he saw as a huge problem.
“Your son is seeing my daughter!” Jensen growled, causing Misha to instantly snap back in offense.
“I think JJ is amazing. What’s wrong with my son?”
“He’s just like you!” Jensen blurted out without thinking, and he could practically hear Misha sending him that suspicious, annoyed look he had perfected over the years playing Cas.
“Yeah? What’s wrong with me now?”
“Nothing Mish. You’re one of my best friends. You know that,” Jensen sighed, falling down on the couch, feeling the anger slowly leave him. His concern stayed though. “But you’re also not dating my daughter.”
“Goodnight Jackles,” Misha chuckled, realising what this was really about, and he couldn’t say he blamed him entirely. Maison bringing her first boyfriend around last year hadn’t exactly been easy on him either. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow when the fumes have stopped coming from your ears.”
“Mish…” Jensen tried to stop him, but it was too late. His friend had already hung up, and Jensen threw himself back against the back of the couch with a huff.
Danneel couldn’t help but smile and take pity on her idiot husband. She slowly crossed the room from the doorway where she had been listening in on his phone call. She sat down next to him, cuddling up to his side, and Jensen instantly wrapped his arm around her.
“You think we can get a pill or something that will turn her into a 4 year old again?” Jensen asked his wife, looking down at her, only halfway joking.
“God I hope not,” Danneel laughed, running her hand over his chest. “I would never get you to myself again then.”
Jensen let out a small chuckle, kissing the top of his wife’s head and tugging her closer. “You think she’s ever gonna forgive me?”
“Depends,” Danneel grinned. “How many times do you plan on trying to scare off West Collins? You know that kid is as stubborn as his dad right?”
Jensen groaned in annoyance, playfully biting his wife’s shoulder, causing her to squeal with laughter and slap his chest.
Gen threw her head back, laughing as Danneel finished telling her story. “Oh poor Jar,” she giggled. “He is gonna have to listen to Jensen’s tale of suffering all day isn’t he?”
Danneel let out a snort. “Well better him than me.” She winked at Gen, who bit her lip as she thought of something Jensen probably hadn’t thought about yet.
“You know Misha and Vicky met in high school right?” Gen raised her eyebrows teasingly, and Danneel instantly turned a little pale.
“Oh God please don’t remind my husband of that….”

Big Bag of Dicks
Pairing: Jensen x Twin Sister!Reader
Word Count: 2137
A/N – This is my submission for three challenges. 1St – for @roxyspearing who graciously gave me an extension with this #roxy’s spn quote challenge with the quote ‘You’re my brother, and I love you, but you are a great big bag of dicks.’ 2nd is for @queen-of-deans-booty #Jordan’s 2K Fluff Challenge with the prompt wrapping gifts. 3rd is for @imaginesforthose-wholovefandoms #karissa’sgiffollowerchallenge which is the gif below the cut
You knew this was a bad idea! You should have known what he was going to do but you still let him come on this shopping trip with you!
All your life you had known that he was a little shit.
Even when you shared your mother's womb, he would kick the living daylights out of you.
And of course he had to kick you so he could get out first, something he'd brag about still.
Spinning on your heel, you caught him doing the exact same thing you told him not to do a few moments ago.
He was a fucking pain in the ass.
‘Would you fucking stop!’ Exasperated, you punched him as hard as you could in the shoulder.
‘I don't know what your talking about.’ Jensen said, a smug grin on his face. He knew exactly what you were talking about.
Groaning, you threw your head back and looked to the ceiling of the supermarket.
‘Jensen, you’re my brother, and I love you, but you are a great big bag of dicks.’ Pointing a finger at him, you told him that this was not the day to get on your nerves even more. You were already stress that it was December now and you still hadn't bought a present for your mom and dad.
‘Oh lighten up, Y/N/N. I'm just having some fun.’ He tried to reason but it still wasn't working with you. You were pissed and he wasn't making things better.
‘It's all fun and games for you but this is serious for me. This is the only time where I don't have to go into work and spending the day with you guys because my boss is an add. I don't need to add you to that list too.’
You just needed him to stop throwing unnecessary items into your shopping cart. God he was an ass.
You loved him but he was an ass and pushed you to the absolute limit, it didn't help that you were already behind schedule on buying and wrapping gifts.
You knew exactly what to get. Your father had been moaning and groaning about his watch being ‘a stupid, non working piece of metal.’ Your mother, on the other hand, was one that you could make. She usually complains about all of her children, and grandchildren, not being with her all the time. The scrapbook you hoped to make her would help her see that she was an amazing woman and that although her children weren't in the same room at the same time, they would always love her and be there with her, be there for her. You had all the images cut out and ready for her scrapbook, you just needed to find the perfect one for her. Your brother definitely wasn't making it easier, throwing every other food item and artsy stuff into the cart you were pushing.
You were stressed and pissed. Not a good combination when you want Christmas to be perfect.
Was it to much to ask?
Finally, Jensen got the hint; a nose flare and scowl later.
He took the items, that weren't on your list, out of the cart and apologised profusely, seeing that you were close to a breakdown enough to bring you to tears.
At first it was funny, you had to hand it to him but continuously doing it drove you insane.
‘What's next on the list, Sis.’
You scoured the list, all consisting in your scribbles and crossed out items that you had thrown in there already.
‘Um, we still gotta get the veggies, the turkey, the um- the five bird roast that me, you, Pops and Birdie love.’ You pointed a finger to the ceiling before pointing it at your twin brother. ‘Oh that reminds me what do I get for Dani - do you guys need more baby clothes or can I just offer my assistance as the cool aunt slash babysitter.’
Smiling, you hoped that it was enough but were willing to do anything to make your sister in law happy.
He waggled his own finger at you, a lopsided grin, ‘uh uh uh, you’re not getting out of it that easily. You’ll babysit whether you like it or not, Y/N/N. She has been eyeing a dress for quite some time. I would have got it but I’m planning on gifting her another thing. This way you have a present to give her and she’ll think you’re a mind reader but you’ll know that I’m a great husband and listener.’
‘Didn’t I have to tell you three times to stop being a pain in the ass? You’re not that great of a listener.’ You laughed at him as he looked as if he had been punched in the gut.
One week later
A knock at your bedroom door sounded and you rushed up from the floor, watching your step, to make it to the door.
‘Wait!’ The door handle began to open. ‘You’re not allowed to come in. There is a sign on the door!’
‘You don’t even know who it is.’ The voice sounded and you rolled your eyes.
‘You idiot, I do now and I’m wrapping presents, yours included, Jay.’
You knew you should have locked the door the moment he wiggled it again.
‘Jay, I swear to god would you please just stop. I’m trying to do something nice for you and if you ruin it, I will kick you where it hurts most, I will hack your twitter, I will reveal secrets not even mom knows. Do not test me!’
‘You promised me you wouldn’t, we twin shook on it.’ He whined through the door, you could literally see the pout on his face now.
‘Yes I did. But if you try to open this door, mom will know what happened when we were seven and you won’t get any of the gifts I have got for you.’
He was silent and you were sure that Jensen was thinking about what you had said, he was only a few seconds away from giving you an answer.
You knew him well enough, you hoped.
‘Can you at least give me a clue? Then I’ll go.’
‘Nope but you’ll love it.’
‘Fine.’
You quickly opened the door and pressed a kiss to his cheek. ‘Thank you,’ you squealed before shutting the door again, effectively shutting him and the rest of your family out of your room.
Terrible, you were terrible at wrapping gifts, no matter how many times you had tried, it never worked out well for you. The triple rolled and poorly taped gifts would have to do for now. You just hoped that your family would appreciated your hard work.
Christmas Morning
Grunting awake, you lurched upwards, a heavy weight on your stomach.
‘Aunt Y/N/N. Aunt Y/N/N. Wake up! It’s CHRISTMAS!’ Your enthusiastic niece, JJ, squealed in your face.
‘Justice,’ you whined with an exaggerated pout, tucking her dirty blonde hair behind her little pixie ears, ‘please, my sweet girl, five more minutes.’
She huffed, her big brown eyes, which she inherited from her mother, growing even wider. Dammit, why did she have to be so cute? ‘But Y/N, when you say five minutes you don’t mean it. You want longer and daddy said I could have candy if I woke you up.’
‘Jay, did daddy put you up to this?’
Her eyes quickly averted and buried her face in your neck, ‘no.’
‘Uh huh. Tell you what...’
‘What?’ She slightly lifted her head so that you knew she was listening.
Shaking your head at her, you reached over your bedside table and grabbed your phone. ‘How about I lay with my best girl for another ten minutes, huh? We hardly ever get to do this anymore, please Justice.’
‘’kay.’ Thank god it was that simple. ‘Just ten more minutes.’
Setting the timer – to twenty minutes but she shall never know – you put it back on your nightstand and fell back onto the bed, your arm now thrown over the little girl as you snuggled against each other and got just a little more sleep.
A mere five seconds after you closed your eyes, the alarm on your phone went off, you had no excuse for the little Jaybird now.
After silencing the phone, you turned your head to see brown eyes and a smile already wide and greeting you. ‘That took forever.’
You deflated a little. ‘Did you not wanna spend time with Aunt Y/N/N?’
‘I did! But Santa came last night.’ She was bouncing now, on her knees and tapping your palms against your stomach. ‘Can we please go wake the others and open them? Please?’
‘I don’t know,’ your voice a little high as you sung. ‘Do you love me?’
She giggled, gripping your pajama top in her little fists and nodding excitingly. ‘Yeah!’
You tapped your cheek, ‘gotta give me some lovin’, Jay.’
As quickly as you had said it, she wrapped her arms around your neck and kissed your cheek then moved to the other side to repeat the action. ‘Love you.’
Finally, you both got out of bed but she refused to let you go so you carried her to the family room where the rest of your large family were.
‘Hey, look who’s finally up!’ Your twin teased, munching on his cookie, a traditional christmas morning cookie and by the looks of the almost empty plate and the crumbs that coated the corners of his mouth, something was telling you that it wasn’t his first one.
‘Shut up.’ You said to him before you took two cookies. Bouncing JJ on your hip, you handed her a cookie and tapped them together in a ‘cheers’ action. ‘You wanna see what Santa got for you?’
‘Duh!’ She giggled and you immediately looked at her father.
‘Oh yeah, totally your kid.’
JJ wiggled out of your hold, sitting cross legged next to the tree, offering various poses – a range of cute smiles and smirks just like her daddy – at the phone Danneel pointed at her. You went to go sit on the fossil grey armchair, tucking your legs under yourself, resting the cerulean blue cushion in your lap.
‘Dani, gimme the phone and you and Jay can get in the picture too.’
You had the perfect angle from where you were sat, from top to tip the decorated tree fit in the frame, the family of three – soon to be four – picture perfect smiles on their faces.
Jared, Gen, Tom and Shep came over to the house not to long after. Finally, all the children were able to open their presents along with the rest of the adults. You just hoped that everyone liked what you got or made for them.
Even you were excited to open your gifts. Your mom knitted you a thick, warm scarf. Your dad brought you two leather bound journals, The Princess Bride DVD and tickets behind the dugouts to see the Dallas Cowboys. You thanked them both, kissing your mom on the cheek and high fiving your dad.
Danneel loved the dress you got for her, you told her in the card you wrote that it was Jensen’s idea. I wasn’t her only present though, you picked up three of the same sized packages handing them to Jensen, Danneel and JJ, telling them to open them all at the same time.
You smiled in anticipation as they opened their gifts, the colour of the decoration the same sky blue with speckles of gold splattered on them.
‘What is it?’
‘They’re sound waves. Forever ago, I asked all three of you if I could record your voices. I told you all to say I love you. Jensen’s necklace has Dani’s and Jaybird’s, Dani’s has Jay’s and Jaybird’s and JJ’s has her mommy and daddy’s.’ You scratched at the back of your neck. ‘It’s not much but I just hoped that it would-’
Jensen interrupted you, smothering you with a big ole bear hug, one of your favourite hugs.
‘They are perfect, thank you.’
The mug he got you customised with his face on it could never compare to the thought you had put into the gift that you had got for his little family.
He thought your reaction was priceless enough to throw his head back, his action a whole body laugh that turned into a giggle.
It was a good job Jensen and the rest of Jared’s family had pitched in to getting you a fancy camera and those fairy lights so that you could hang it in your bedroom back at home. The piece of thread you had hanging from your walls a little bare. Jensen would just have to make sure that there was enough memories made to fill the strings.

Stay Beautiful - Chapter 4

A/N: So it’s finally here. Chapter 4. I’m so sorry about how long it took for it to come out. I’ve been coming down of a medication and the withdrawal symptoms have been insane. Okay, so I’m going to be busy from Thursday for a while (I’m surprising my sister and going to her uni with my family for her birthday. I hope she doesn’t ever find this blog but yeah, surprise!) and so if I don’t get a chapter uploaded by then (which I hopefully will) that’s why. Anyway, I hope this chapter does the other chapters justice!
Trigger warnings: Kidnap, missing child, depression
Word Count: 2443
Tag List: @winchesters-favorite-girl @winchester-writes @storyofawinchester @rosie-winchester@bea789 @inkedinpastel @alicat-life @wayward-marvel-sommer1196 @bellero @unicorndreamer1622 @internationalmusicteacher @xdsockmonkey @lolawinchesterr
The Padalecki’s did exactly what Ava had predicted. Which meant that, twenty-four hours later, I found out I was going to be living with them until the court hearing took place to resolve my permanent custody at the end of November.
Ava forced me to see a counsellor the next day. She said something about me needing help to adjust to the new situation I was in. But to be honest, talking about everything just made me feel worse. The stupid counsellor was ancient. She kept nodding at me sympathetically and saying “Mmn, must be very difficult for you,” until I wanted to scream at her.
I know it’s difficult. What the hell can I do about it?
I was sure part of her was thinking that I had no problem. That I wanted to know who I was, and here I am. I’m Chloe Kendra Padalecki. Get on with it. It was so hard to explain how I felt, and I’d already had to go through it with the judge.
What I’d said was that ”I’d rather live with the Padalecki’s than with a strange foster family,” but what I really felt in my heart was all muddled. Of course I wanted to spend time with the Padalecki’s. But I didn’t want to move in with them. I didn’t know them, and the thought that I’d be moving in with them was terrifying. And strangely enough, I missed mum and dad.
My only hope is my parents being found and them explaining something. Anything to make their innocence apparent. But the chances of them being innocent at all are slim to none, and I had another stupid session with the counsellor after lunch. My last lunch with Morgan before she had to fly home.
“Hey, what’s up?” Morgan asked. We were having lunch at a separate table to her parents who were out all night because they were discussing my situation. Go figure.
“I’m just distracted. The stupid counsellor is making me think about everything. Really intensely too. She just wants me to go in further detail so she can say she’s sorry I’m feeling that way. It’s annoying.” I said, picking at my food. I wasn’t hungry at all right now. And judging by my nerves, I don’t know if I ever will be again.
“So, try not to talk about those things. Try and talk about good things. Like, I don’t know. Remember in primary school? We played that game in which we could transform into anything. I know that idiot will probably try to make it a big deal, but just talk about our games. I remember once, I’m pretty sure I was some European king in a former life and you wouldn’t believe the…”
As Morgan happily spoke on about the escapades of our youth, I smiled sadly at her. I couldn’t imagine a future without her. Or mum and dad. I had thought knowing for sure that I was Chloe Kendra Padalecki would make sense of everything. I thought finding my real parents would fill up all the missing parts of me.
But Chloe Kendra was just the name of a missing baby.
And my mum isn’t even here anymore.
And I was more alone than ever.
Once lunch was over I said goodbye to Morgan and the Caldwell’s.
“Listen, try to enjoy yourself. I mean, I know it’s easier said than done, but remember, you get to say that your favourite actor is your father. Pretty cool if I say so myself.” Morgan said. I rolled my eyes and smiled at her. My heart was in my throat.
“Don’t go?” I begged. She had tears welling up in her eyes as I had mine.
“Kendra, it’s okay. I promise we’ll be back in the summer. Before you know it. But this one has to get back to school. She’s not exactly at the top of her class.” Morgan’s dad said. I cracked a smile, and Morgan shoved him slightly.
“Dad!” She whined. I smiled and hugged her one last time before they left.
Ava came up to me after that.
“The counsellor’s been called in to an emergency about one of her regulars. You’ll have to see her some other time.” She explained. “Are you all packed?” She asked. I looked down sadly and nodded my head.
I went to my hotel room and picked up my suitcase. Isn’t it strange how this one room felt more like home than either the Padalecki’s or the place I called home for so many years?
I followed Ava out to the car. As she shut me inside it felt like I was being locked into a prison. The journey to the Padalecki’s house seemed to flash by in seconds. I sat in the back of the car with my hands clenched tightly together.
When I saw the yellow ribbon tied round the tree in the Padalecki’s front garden, my heart, already in a mush in my shoes, dribbled out onto the ground. “There’s not going to be a party or anything is there?” I asked Ava.
She shot me a puzzled look. “That ribbon’s been there since Jared moved here and been on every tree on his house ever since you disappeared,” she said. “Didn’t you notice it there before?”
I hadn’t. As we walked through the gates and up the path I saw she was right. The ribbon was faded and stained, and it looked like it had been retied before. “It’s a tradition,” Ava said, “for when people are a long way from home.”
As she rang on the doorbell my heart thumped in my chest. The house seemed quiet, but I was dreading all the people I might have to meet.
Jared Padalecki opened the door almost before Ava stopped pressing the buzzer. He stood back to let me in. I got the same impression I had before. Lots of space and light and polished wooden furniture. This time I noticed a swimming pool through the back-door window.
I stood awkwardly, wondering where everyone else was.
The woman who had spoken to me when I was here before was hanging back by one of the flowery sofas. But I could feel her eyes boring into me. I knew her name was Genevieve Padalecki.
My stepmum. And yet, so not my stepmum.
I looked at the floor wishing I was anywhere else.
Ava said goodbye, but I was trying too hard not to cry that I just wasn’t able to say anything back. Genevieve showed Ava out, then came and held out her hand for my suitcase. I gave it up reluctantly. I still hadn’t spoken.
“Come and sit down. We’re on our own. We thought it would be easier for you.” Jared said. Genevieve put my suitcase by the stairs and led me over to the sofas. I had this strong sense that Jared was dying to hurl himself at me and give me this major hug and was restraining himself with great difficulty. I sat in the corner of the sofa, as far away from him as possible.
I looked down, this tatty friendship bracelet Morgan gave me at the end of year six to make sure we’d always be friends no matter what was still clung around my wrist. The sight of it brought such a lump to my throat that I had to dig my fingers into my palms to stop myself from howling.
“Kendra?” I looked up. Jared was sitting on the sofa opposite me. Genevieve stood behind him, reaching over his shoulder. They were holding hands.
They couldn’t have been more different from mum and dad. Genevieve was obviously much, much younger than mum and really groomed. Her hair was carefully set and her makeup immaculate, right down to the glossy pink lipstick. Jared appeared even younger. He was tall and athletic-looking with dark brown hair that flopped down to Just above his shoulders.
“The counsellor told us you prefer to be called Kendra.” Jared said.
Of course I do, it’s my name.
“Which is fine.” Genevieve added quickly.
“Kendra was your mother’s mom’s name,” Jared went on. “That’s why it’s your middle name. I’m so happy you remembered it – at least, I assume you must have or else…” He looked away. “Her mother wasn’t much older than you when you were born. Nineteen. She was called Kendra after her grandmother. It was her middle name too.”
“Jared.” Genevieve patted her husband on the shoulder.
“Yeah, I’m sorry, I’m just…” A tear trickled down his cheek.
I looked down at my lap. This man was my father. I had to live with him. And he was a complete stranger.
“This is so hard on all of us, Kendra. But… but d- Jared and I want you to know that we love you so, so much.”
You don’t even know me.
I suddenly missed mum and dad unbearably.
Oh god, what if they get sent to prison and I never see them again?
My gut twisted
“We never stopped waiting and searching and hoping and praying you would come home to us. Oh… oh what is it?”
I couldn’t hold the tears back any longer. At the word ‘home’ my whole body just heaved in despair. I bent over, hiding my face, every part of me racked with silent sobs.
And suddenly they were both there, in floods of tears themselves. Jared at my knees, his arms round me, going, “My baby, my baby.” Genevieve’s hand stroking my hair.
It was hideous.
I wanted to scream and yell at them to go away. To let me go home. But what good would it do? Mum and dad were on the run, and probably not allowed to see me even when they get found.
I forced myself to stop crying. I sat up, drew back and wiped my eyes.
When mum and dad get found, they’ll prove their innocence and they can fight for me. The Padalecki’s won’t make me stay. If they really love me, they’ll let me go.
About an hour after I’d arrived, everyone else who was there the other day turned up. Including Jared and Genevieve’s other kids.
I remembered two of them from that day. Thomas, who was confused more than anything else, and little Shep, who had stared at me over the top of the sofa, his eyes as big and as round as a bushbaby’s.
“Are you sure it’s okay?” Thomas asked from the front door.
“Of course, sweetie.” Genevieve stood up. “Come in and meet your big sister properly.”
Thomas shuffled cautiously into the living room. His hair was the same colour brown as Jared’s and he was wearing a teenage mutant ninja turtles costume. I knew from what Jared told me, he was five.
“Hi Chloe.” He blushed. “Oh, I’m sorry. I’m supposed to call you Kendra.”
“Hi.” I said. Then, feeling perhaps I should be a bit more generous, I added: “I’m sure you’ll get used to it.”
Tom’s lip trembled.
“It’s okay, sweetheart.” Jared gave him an enormous hug, then turned to me. “Tom’s just a little emotional right now. He’s only heard stories of you, so this is all kind of strange for him.”
Strange for him?
Thomas fixed me with his round, brown eyes. “I’ve always wanted to meet my big sister.” He said in such a monotone voice that made me wonder whether he actually wanted to, or it’s just what he’s always been told. Either way, it’s quite obvious that he didn’t really care one way or the other.
“Oh, Tom. What a sweet thing to say.” Genevieve hugged him.
I heard a noise behind my chair and looked round. I jumped. Shep was standing by the arm, about half-a-metre away from me.
“Shep, please don’t creep up on people like that,” Genevieve sighed. “I’m going to make some tea. Come through when you’re ready.”
Tom and Jared followed Gen out of the room. I smiled at Shep. “Hi.”
He stared at me.
“So how old are you?” I asked, even though Jared had already told me.
“Three.” Shep still hadn’t taken his eyes off me. “Are you really my sister?”
I nodded.
“I imagined you were a princess.” JJ, Jensen’s daughter said from the door, sucking her thumb.
“Oh. Well… er… I’m not. Sorry, I guess I’m just ordinary.”
They leaned forward, and JJ whispered in my ear. Her breath smelled of strawberry jam. “We could still pretend you are.”
I grinned at them. “Do you two like pretend games?”
Shep nodded solemnly. “I’m going to be an actor when I grow up.”
“Really? D’you like dressing up and stuff?” I asked, remembering how I used to like putting on mum’s old clothes when I was little.
“Some.” JJ tilted her diamond face to one side. “But what we really like is pretending. You know, imagining being other people.”
“Tea’s ready,” Jared called. Shep ran out of the room, and JJ skipped behind him. I followed, watching the way her long blonde hair swung from side to side across her back.
“I hope you talked nicely to Kendra,” Jensen said as JJ sat down at the table. He turned to me. “She’s such a shy little thing.”
“Actually, they were both great,” I said. “They told me… lots of stuff.”
The pair reddened. I tried to smile at them, to reassure them that I wasn’t going to grass them up about their acting ambitions in front of their actor parents. JJ smiled back, but Shep looked away.
Danneel, Jensen’s wife, set down a jug of milk down on the table. As she sat down I noticed a photo from behind her on the windowsill. Without hesitation I got up to look at it. It was quite an old photo. I could tell because it was printed and framed, but the colour of the frame seemed a bit faded. However, it wasn’t old enough that the photo inside it was grainy and of poor quality. No. This picture was of my mum holding me as a baby. And as bad as it was I only had one thought in my head as a looked at her slight double chin.
Great. Just my luck. On top of everything else. Fat genes.
It felt like the whole world was moving even slower than usual as I heard the deafening silence filling the room. But, out of the window I noticed something.
Ava’s car was parking up into the driveway, and as soon as she got out, I could see it in her face that it wasn’t good news.
