I have a new student that I'm working with. A third grader I check in with every Wednesday for 15 minutes. His teacher told me that he loves to draw graffiti. As soon as he came into my office, after checking out the Funko Pops, he went straight for the pen and blank paper. Lil man got some SKILLZ for an 8 year old. Learned the craft from his older cousin and YouTube. I had to give him a quick Hip-Hop lesson. Ofcourse he noticed my forearm graffiti tats and was like "You have graffiti tattoos?" 👀😯 I said "Yes Sir. I Am Hip-Hop!" It's important that young black males get to see people who look like them on their educational path. Especially one's they share cultural connections with. I'm going to enjoy mentoring this young Hip-Hopper. I might even bring in some guest local graffiti writers to come and do some Graf with us. He did this quick write in 10 minutes. But the #gazebo where 12-year-old Tamir Rice, playing with a pellet gun, was shot and killed by police officer #TimothyLoehmann is no longer outside the #CudellRecreationCenter in Cleveland. It’s on the back lawn of a community arts center on the South Side of #Chicago. “I just wanted to thank everybody for coming out, and the city of Chicago for giving the permit. And thanks to Theaster for getting the gazebo, and holding the gazebo,” Tamir’s mother, #SamariaRice, said at a ceremony Sunday, dedicating the gazebo that was reassembled at the historic #SouthSideArtsBank, 6760 S. Stony Island Ave. After the city of Cleveland decided the gazebo had to go, artist Theaster Gates, founder of the nonprofit Rebuild Foundation, brought the disassembled structure to the Arts Bank in fall 2016.
