Field Works - Cedars - a concept album about forests, but in two distinct halves: Arabic poetry spoken and sung by Youmna Saba over ambient tracks, and poetry in English spoken by H.C. McEntire over Americana
The mystifying 9th album in the Field Works series, Cedars combines cosmic Americana with Western ambient and Middle Eastern influences. Delicate layers of pedal steel, banjo, oud, and hurdy-gurdy float atop looping guitar drones to create a soothing, atmospheric chamber where folk and electronic music coalesce. Set to Arabic and English poetry, the song cycle examines some of Earth’s most iconic and ancient forests, revealing our complicated relationship with the natural world. For this special dual-language release, Field Works producer Stuart Hyatt has assembled a supergroup of musicians, poets, and artists. The album is narrated by Youmna Saba and H.C. McEntire. Instrumentalists include Marisa Anderson, Fadi Tabbal, Dena El Saffar, Danny Paul Grody, Bob Hoffnar, Tomás Lozano, Nathan Bowles, Alex Roldan, Youmna Saba, and Stuart Hyatt. Renowned illustrator María Medem brings poems by Todd Fleming Davis and Youmna Saba to life in the accompanying full-color Risograph comic book; and longtime Field Works collaborators PRINTtEXT design the packaging.
From flotsam and jetsam to the sunken satellites and grimacing groupers of the Pacific, the sound artist Alexandra Spence uses submerged tape recordings, clarinet, woodblock, and queña for an underwater adventure on Mappa Editions. Born in Baghdad and raised in Tasmania before founding the Barcelona experimental outpost Paralaxe Editions, the composer Dania Shihab weaves together a gossamer tapestry of looped and layered vocals on her droning and levitating solo debut Voz. Taking their name from Jean Dubuffet's Hourloupe cycle, the musicians and poets Anar Badalov and Frank Menchaca dispel the silence of New Orleans crypts and Andalusian reflecting pools with a burnishing warmth, an owlish hoot and a ravenous holler. And self-released back in 2014 at the end of a residency at the Gyeonggi Creation Center, the musicologist Youmna Saba's third studio album conceived as a dialogue between voice and oud finally lands on streaming services courtesy of Touch. Tracks by Glüme, Maya Hawke, John Escreet, Fireboy DML, and Silvana Estrada also feature in the latest roundup of new music.

Berlin - DE
‘Iritjal’ is the Arabic word for ‘improvisation’. Iritjal is also the name of the festival for contemporary and experimental music founded in 2001 in Beirut, the oldest music festival in Beirut and one of the longest-running festivals in post-war Lebanon. It took place every year, has grown steadily ever since, and established itself as the most important festival of experimental music in the Middle East. To mark its 20th anniversary, the Irtijal Festival is cooperating with the concert series biegungen im ausland. Essentially twelve musicians from Beirut and twelve musicians from Berlin take part in the festival, some of whom get to know each other anew and mostly form new groups. The festival extends over three days and will open on October 8 with an talk by Irtijal co-founder Mazen Kerbaj and biegungen curator Mathias Maschat. There are three different groups performing each evening, supplemented each day by a shorter solo set. In addition to the concerts, an exhibition designed by Hatem Imam on the occasion of 20 years of Irtijal can be seen in the foyer of the WABE.
JD Zazie has been invited to join this beautiful event and will play in two nights, on the 8th and on the 10th.
On Friday she will play in quartet with Liz Tabet (electronics, modular synthesizer), Axel Dörner (trumpet) and Michael Thieke (clarinet). They will share the night with the duo “Praed Unplugged” by Raed Yassin (double bass) and Paed Conca (clarinet), the quartet “Four or the Dragon” by Abed Kobeissy (buzuq), Ali Hout (percussion), Ute Wassermann (voice), Andrea Parkins (accordion, electronics, object) and the guitar solo by Fadi Tabbal.
On Sunday she will open the night in trio together with Aya Metwalli (synthesizer, guitar, voice) and Ali Hout (percussions). They will be followed by the duo Andrew Lafkas (double bass) / Youmna Saba (guitar), the solo by Liz Tabet (electronics, modular synthesizer) and the quintet “Khoumassi” by Burkhard Beins (percussion), Michael Vorfeld (percussion), Mazen Kerbaj (trumpet), Sharif Sehnaoui (guitar) and Christine Abdelnour (saxophone). After that it will be time to dance with DJ Rabih Beaini.
On Saturday the talk “Noise on Paper” by Hatem Imam will open the evening and then will play the duo Magda Mayas (clavinet) / Abed Kobeissy (buzuq), the quartet by Fadi Tabbal (guitar) / Tony Elieh (bass) / Tony Buck (drums, percussion) / Youmna Saba (guitar), the solo by Aya Metwalli (synthesizer, guitar, voice) and the quartet by Biliana Voutchkova (violin) / Raed Yassin (double bass) / Andrew Lafkas (double bass) / Sharif Sehnaoui (guitar) which will end the night.

Hi, I’m Maayan! I’m 14 years old, I live in the USA, & I know some German. I like genres such as metal, rock, acoustic, chill, all that. I’m into music in different languages; I listen to Rammstein, Arktida, NO BRAIN, Souad Massi, Youmna Saba, JadaL, Rafael Castro, Okdal, and lots of Yugoslavian songs & other stuff! I’m open to all and any recommendations. I’m working on a comic book right now (it’s my summer goal to make & finish one). I’ll probably mention it & ask for advice & feedback. Uhh I don’t normally watch TV, but I do enjoy Bob’s Burgers. I hate popular pop music (yknow, like Shawn Mendes & Ariana Grande). Truth is, summer is turning out to be very lonely and I want someone to write to. I enjoy lengthy email messages and I always write long emails so be ready for that. Contact me on gmail at vogelmaayan @ gmail .com Thank you!

Field Works - Maples, Ash, and Oaks: Cedars Instrumentals - not just Cedars with the vocals removed; a shining example of the New Age of New Age
Maples, Ash, and Oaks: Cedars Instrumentals is a mesmerizing soundtrack for a long walk in the woods, made up of pedal steel, oud, guitar, hurdy-gurdy, and piano. Based on the original Field Works album Cedars, this new suite of instrumental music brings the listener even deeper into the forest. For this special limited-edition release, Stuart Hyatt deconstructed each track from Cedars and rebuilt them one layer at a time. He removed the narrators’ voices and invited Julien Marchal to introduce piano as the new protagonist. The 15 new tracks are named from each line of the new poem, Deciduous, by Cecily Parks. The musical frameworks are based on the Field Works album Cedars, created by Marisa Anderson, Fadi Tabbal, and Stuart Hyatt – and performed by Julien Marchal, Youmna Saba, Dena El Saffar, Danny Paul Grody, Bob Hoffnar, Stuart Hyatt, Tomás Lozano, Nathan Bowles, Alex Roldan, Fadi Tabbal, and Marisa Anderson. The forest soundscape was recorded by Harrison Ridley in the Welsh countryside.
Here is a List of Lebanese Musicians to Support Following Deadly Beirut Explosion
"Beirut stands shaken, devastated, stripped and alone today."
After the devastating explosion that "virtually wiped out" Beirut's nightlife district, Lebanese musicians are struggling mightily to pick up the pieces in its wake. As many across the world do their best to lend a helping handto those affected in the Lebanese capital, a group of organizations and individuals have compiled an expansive list of musicians, record labels, and festivals to support.
According to reports, the explosion was likely due to approximately 2,750 metric tons of explosive ammonium nitrate stored at a Beirut warehouse. The blast left at least 220 dead and an estimated 300,000 people homeless.
The list, which is housed in a widely shared Google Doc titled "Beirut Solidarity," also includes links to organizations providing support to victims of the explosion, like the Lebanese Red Cross. "Beirut stands shaken, devastated, stripped and alone today," the document reads. "Besides facing a collapsing economy and a deadly pandemic, Beirut has been hit by an apocalyptic explosion that has left the city bathed in glass, ruins and blood. Many are stripped of their homes, safe spaces and livelihoods, as everyone is trying to figure out how best to help a city so rich in music, culture and energy albeit itâs sad history."
You can find a list of music entities to support below and view the full "Beirut Solidarity" document here.
