Harry "If I’m reading right your accent, Mr. Hickey, you grew up in a home where you must have used every part of any meat or fowl your mam could procure." Goodsir vs. Thomas "Everything we ate growing up started with a gun." Jopson
#you're telling me harry goodsir#who said 'it would be good for trade' and 'people in england are good' straight to silna's face#never once did a classism at jopson?#not once???#maybe they never had the opportunity to interact in the show because of the Events#but like#in a rescue scenario#it feels like it's only a matter of time before something falls out of goodsir's mouth that makes jopson wish he had his gun back#the terror#thomas jopson#harry goodsir#anyway if you've seen my jopson/tozer posts you know where this is going

the mutineer guys ranked by how much i wanna put my hand on their head and ruffle their hair around affectionately like you would a dog:
10. Diggle, you are bald and i think it would probably be very rude to rub your head unless you asked me to. I would give this guy a hug though, he was so scared
9. Golding. sorry i know you're like a baby and you probably deserve more of a headruffle than anyone else here but the hair is so lank and sad i am just not interested. i'll give you a lovely hot broth of vegetable soup and some oranges on the side though.
8. hickey i guess. his hair is stringy and greasy and i say 'ew' a little bit but i still give him an affectionate pat in the hopes that he doesnt try to eat me. maybe i offer him some dry shampoo? he seems to be really careful about keeping himself clean as much as he can.
7. hodgeson, but im really gentle so i dont tear out more of his hair. maybe i give him lotion and antiseptic for the chapped sores on his face (tozer and des vouex steal it from him)
6. Pilks!! his hair is a good length for flopping around. he seems like he'd get a bit defensive and doesnt wanna be treated 'like a baby'. i also give this guy some soup. and shampoo. my hand is yucky with grease at this point. maybe i can find soap and water.
5. Gibson has really cute curls but id worry about accidentally tearing his hair out. scurvy guy. also, i dont think hed be into headpats from anyone buy hickey or maybe his family
4. Harry Goodsir. like diggle, hes not really a mutineer by choice, but his hair is glorious and extremely ruffle-able. we definitely chat about modern science. i give him soup.
3. charles des vouex. his hair is nice and wavy and long enough for a very satisfying scrub. he keeps it covered (cleanliness? his scalp is bleeding ala fitzjames? maybe some hairloss from stress? shade? heat?? who knows why that shirt is there). also hes really paranoid so idk if he'd be chill with this. maybe i ask him to put the gun down first (this makes him even more suspicious). inexplicably im very partial to des voeux so i also give him warm nutritious soup. i also encourage him to rethink his attitude about the inuit (he punches me)
2. Tommy Armitage. how come he has so much cute fluffy curly hair. unfair!!!!!! stop looking so cute, people are going to start ignoring your agency and culpability!!!!
Solomon fucking Tozer. every single time i see his sad little face i want to scrub my hand through his hair and tell him things will be okay. hes more of a cur than a man. hes the saddest fucking face. he looks like hes about to cry at least 80% of the time in the last two episodes. how come his hair barely looks greasy!!!!! what is going on!!!!!!

Sharing some headcannons for Jenny from 2022 Rise. Roar. Revolt. Or RRR.
Mainly so they stop pestering me to be heard.
What if Scott and Cathy are Jenny's only parental figures and that's why she came to India? Perhaps she is an orphan or poor relation. When Bheem is asking about her house, her tone is sad when she tells him it's big but not really a home.
In regards to Malli and why Jenny didn't try to free the girl, I have a theory. Cathy seems like the type who would lie to Jenny and tell her that Malli is an orphaned Indian whom they care for. Jenny is trusting of her aunt, no doubt. And wouldn't question this as truth.
Jenny reminds me of Harry Goodsir from AMC's The Terror. Harry Goodsir did not understand the cruelty the other English men showed to the Inuit people they encountered. This was because Harry had lived an isolated life in England. I believe the same can be said for Jenny. She's not seen colonization or English militant cruelty to the Indians. She also has no prejudice, like Harry, whether it's because it was never enforced in her childhood like it never was for me, or if she simply chooses to not be prejudice because it is wrong. Regardless, this causes an inward confliction.
Imagine that you're told by your aunt and uncle that you are obligated to watch the flogging of the man you have feelings for. Then you're watching your only aunt who has been your only source of motherly affection get angry that there isn't enough blood on the floor. Then proceed to get a cat o' nine out with gleeful delight for the officer to use.
When Jenny is crying at Bheem's flogging, it seems so little at first. Then I thought about how britians are told not to show emotions, stiff upper lip and all of that. And especially why would she show her grief and pain to the two people she thought were good, kind, and just. And just now she sees what they're really like. I'd say this was a lot to take in.
I personally don't feel that she blames Ram for being the one that flogged Bheem. I feel that Jenny would be too conflicted about what her Aunt and Uncle are doing to Bheem to think about Ram being the one inflicting the punishment. I feel as though she only sees Ram as another Indian man rising up in the ranks as he sees fit.(but this could be my love for Ram and not wanting Jenny to blame him).
I know that we didn't have time in the film to fully show Jenny's emotional/psychological conflict. But she most likely risked her life to give Bheem the map to the prison. How he even was able to signal her for help shows that she was on constant vigil to help him with whatever she could. The way she says "Be careful." Sounds so sad and separated. Stiff upper lip and all of that...
I'm sure I'll think of other stuff later, or someone else bring stuff to the table.
Anyways, thanks to whoever read this.
@ronaldofandom I thought to tag you in this post! Tag whoever you know who also likes Jenny!

terror rewatch time!!! i'll be using this post to comment on ep. 7 "horrible from supper" block the tag terrorwatch2 if you'd like :-)
"see you in a months time mr. hickey" you guys don't know what happened to me when I first watched this. and I can't put it into words either
waaaait is this the moment where hickey zeroes in on tozer. "i hope I'm stood next to you when it comes" and of course he meant it as "so I can shove you to the creature and not me" but ec's delusional ass was like "oh. he desires me carnally" which to be fair was also true, I think, even this early. AND BILLY MAKING SUCH A WEIRD FACE IN THE BACKGROUND TOO.
i love that billy was the first one to express mutinous intentions. AND HICKEY TOUCHING HIS WAIST WHEN HE TELLS HIM TO SPEAK HIS MIND AAAAAAA
hartnell ❤️❤️❤️ also hodge kinda looking :-/ and hickey noticing it.......
collins :-((( trystan gravelle the actor that you are.......
goodsir trying to protect silna from the lead poisoning tipping hickey off that something was wrong!!!! also the brewing dissatisfaction expressed by tommy armitage!!!!
and of course, the burden of morfin and tozer of being the only two men who know that they are even more doomed than they thought they were, that lieutenant fairholme is dead and his men are dead and really they're all living dead men right now. i hadn't noticed they were tied by this, and then later tozer mercy-kills him.
also of course crozier choosing to keep this from the crew also brewing dissatisfaction. as blanky said to jfj "if you're gonna keep things from the men you need to give them something in return"!!!!!
little crozier dad son bonding time 🥹
tozer trying to get the mutiny boys guns and crozier being like ok until he hears. of course. mr. hickey. SOLOMON YOU FUMBLED THAT ONE. "The reason is sound, some of those names are not"
"My head. Cut it off. Put it with the others". We circle back to the idea of what is "a mercy" that was also very present in the last episode.
the cut from harry and silna together, to harry alone facing in the direction she had been the past night....... oh my god.......
funny thing is. hickey wanted to be noticed by crozier so bad. and if he had just done his fucking job well and been a nice person he probably would have been noticed and well regarded just like hartnell was. thing is though hickey doesn't even necessarily care for the "well regarded part" he just wants to be SEEN and if it's for being a shithead so be it (we can see that in his first interaction with goodsir, clearly goodsir dislikes him but still hickey beams with joy because AT LEAST HE WAS SEEN)
"that is my job you are shaving away" they were fucking crazy for that.
hodge not being at the command meeting probably really got under his skin.
ooooooh crozier promoting jopson is on one hand a good idea and in the other a bad one. bc "it's never been done" so I guess it highlights how bullshit that whole hierarchical system which divides human beings into "officers" and "men" is bullshit and it'll probably foster resentment. but it's also good for crozier bc it means there's someone he trusts in a position of authority.
"some modicum of protocol must be observed, even here" oh but soon this'll break too. don't worry.
re: the lead poisoned cans i must say once again hickey is actually a smart person. thing is he is also a narcissist with god delusions and thus he fucks up more than he should and doesn't usually learn from his mistakes because well. narcissism.
just the fact that hickey and tozer can pull hodge aside and talk so frankly about everything and call francis not "the captain" or "Mr. Crozier" but just. "crozier" something which even like 2 months ago would have been unthinkable. it shows how inadequate these structures they have are in the face of that landscape, those odds, those circumstances.
this reveals so much about both hodge and hickey!!!! "I'm not a captain, I'm not made of that" "you can be whatever you need to be now" which is ec's whole life philosophy.
also "let me be your lieutenant" he knows how to play psychologically..... an officer would balk at allowing himself to be led by a caulker's mate....... so he must think he is the leader..... while clearly hickey is running the operation.
when hodge takes armitage and pocock (new terror guy unlocked!!!) and jirv realizes then that he must take hickey he looks SO UNCOMFORTABLE
"The captain said so, didn't he?" That the netsilik would help them and yup he was right, at which moment hickey realizes it would be useful to kill the both of them and pin it on the netsilik and then kill the netsilik so as to leave no trace of his fuckery in order to further undermine crozier too
"my name is lieutenant john irving of her majesty's royal navy" and the way. the way this means nothing to them. babyboy. forget about being an officer. try being a man.
THE WAY HE IS ALMOST CRYING WHEN HE JUST SAYS "JOHN".
and like. the way he kills john feels so. professional. practiced. even before we get the confirmation that he indeed killed cornelius hickey we get the impression that ec has killed before. ec was a killer; cornelius hickey was not. but now cornelius hickey is a killer too.

Me: GenX goth girl who picked up her first issue of Sandman back in 1989 and has read the series through more times than she can count.
My spouse: has never read the comics and has only the vaguest idea of what it's about.
We're three episodes into the Netflix series and I am telling you, I have not had this much fun with reader vs. never-read since the first season of Game of Thrones.
"There are jokes? I wasn't expecting ... whimsical humor."
"When he gets his stuff back and his powers back, does he actually, like ... do shit, and not just mope around?"
"... It's blowing my mind to hear Jenna Coleman swearing."

Despite months of upheaval and being dubbed a "vile deviant" for writing kissy fanfic, I did it: my fic for this year's @theterrorbigbang, Something Rich and Strange.
Harry Goodsir's life, imagined as a garden of forking paths. It's 1848 and he is dying in a tent on King William Island. It's 1849 and he is having yet another tiresome argument with the administration of Surgeons' Hall over funding for the museum while he waits for his friend Edward Forbes to return from the Arctic. It's 1854 and he's serving in the Crimea with James Fitzjames. It's 1861 and he is collecting butterflies under the watchful eyes of asylum orderlies. It's 1870 and he is walking on the beach near Fife with his children. It's 1886 and Silna holds his hand as he breathes his last. All of these things are true.
Featuring:
The stunning art of @elfgrandfather !
Ruminations on mortality, fate, paths not taken, and what could have been!
A sequel/prequel/spinoff to last year's story and another installment in my growing AU!
An excessive commentary post!
All the things you have come to know and love about my Terror writing!
Enjoy!

Penguin Fitzpenguin has a new pal, Armfish Fitzarmfish.
DeadGhostCrafting is doing God's work here. All his armfish are delightful, but obviously I had to go with this one.

Good morning, fellow aficionados of terrible medical history. Would you like an interactive text game about pre-germ theory, pre-anaesthesia surgery? Well, you're in luck.

That's actually such a good point, and it's something that sort of continues on - goodsir is quite consistently perceived differently to how he is. He's an anatomist, not a surgeon or a doctor, but he is treated as surgeon and doctor by the others and the stuff he does that is essentially anatomical studies - testing out potential sources of the poisoning on poor Jacko - he does completely alone and unseen by anyone else. Then later he's with the mutineers, but not a mutineer, he's a hostage, but not a hostage,if that makes sense (I have been in the sun all day it melts my brain a little). He then actively rejects the role of Doctor and refuses to treat the mutineers - alright, fair play, he couldn't even if he'd wanted to, but he's not apologetic about it and he doesn't even really try, just says no, you're fucked. It's only when he's finally listened to as an anatomist, someone who isn't a healer but knows how bodies work, when he tells Crozier to eat only the thickest part of his feet, that he actually does manage to save the lives he set out to save. And that's got me thinking about how he's one of the only people not seen in costume at carnivale - he isn't hiding anything he is, and he isn't trying to be anything he's not, he's just trying to get someone to look at him and see Harry Goodsir, Anatomist, yknow?
OK BUT,,, I always read Gore insisting on calling Goodsir a doctor as a positive thing - elevating him above his assigned station, like - but watching it now... idk, it feels a little disrespectful to ignore is actual profession? he specifically mentions that he an anatomist. and then especially mirroring that with when he asks McDonald to call him by his first name, which is ignored in favour of calling him a doctor again.
I dont know if Goodsir has ever actually expressed an interest in being a doctor, or even happiness at being called so* - he's a naturalist and an anatomist. (Show!Goodsir, I mean). Gore and McDonald (and me!!) just kind of assume it's a kindness, because Doctors are "better"/a higher standing than what Goodsir is.
*(ofc that's kind of up to how you interpret his non-verbal reaction, but that's what we're all about here at confidently asserting our meta takes dot com!!)
#the terror#Sorry this got to be a lot I was gonnae put it all in the tags but I was inspired by confidence in our meta takes dot com#Also like. Pinch of salt been a while since my rewatch etc
