Hi my partner is Hungarian and I’m very interested in what Hungarian rock you’re listening to ^_^
Ah! An excuse to talk about Hungarian rock! I say as I eat Hungarian sausage, on my computer that has a picture of Budapest as the desktop background, happily sitting in my chair across from my Hungarian flag collection, delightfully looking forward to reading my book about the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, all while being roughly half ethnic Hungarian. Hungary, Hungary, Hungary, ria ria Hungaria!
You have triggered one of my two braincells, the one dedicated to Hungary. Köszönöm!
I'm warning you... You triggered... The Braincellâ„¢.
My absolute favorite Hungarian national rock band is Nemzeti Hang. I have no clue what your background is, so I don't know if you know what "national rock" is, but it's effectively patriotic rock (Don't know if that's a really normal or common genre everyone knows exists but me, I refuse to google it). Nemzeti Hang mostly sings a lot of wholesome and patriotic stuff, I haven't noticed them sing anything raunchy or inappropriate, and I've seen plenty of videos of people bringing their small children to their concerts. There is a ton of Nemzeti Hang music available on Youtube. That includes some of their older music which has a very different, more punkish kinda sound to it. I like their newer music more.
I don't speak Hungarian (yet), but many of their songs I'm able to look up the lyrics of and translate if I try hard enough. Here's some examples:
Nincs Kegyelem was the first song I ever heard by them (has a corny sounding synthesizer, but I still like it).

Ballada is pretty new as of the time I'm writing this, it's a beautiful song that appears to be about believing a passed away loved one is looking down from Heaven (I think. I managed to find the lyrics once and lost them forever, so I could be misremembering the translation. Perhaps this counts as Christian rock?).

Hősök Vagytok is praise for the people who helped us survive Covid, thanking nurses and stuff.

Mi Vagyunk Hungária is a feel-good song that's basically just Hungarian pride, and it slaps so hard I always throw my hands in the air and sing along when it comes on. Very wholesome.

Az Ember Gyermeke... All I know is that it's called "The Children of Man" (Or something like "The Children of People" but that doesn't sound as poetic). Can't find the lyrics, it just rules.

I want to share SO MUCH NEMZETI HANG, but I must stop myself somewhere. I'm heartbroken because they actually have a lot of merch, but they don't ship outside of Hungary. Of course, American dollars are worth way more than Hungarian forints, so I can pile my cart on their site with half the dang store (not literally), and it's only, like, $40. Just take my superior American money! I wish I could have everything I owned imported from Hungary (Thank goodness for Etsy)! I could just take Nemzeti Hang and swish them around in my mouth like mouthwash. I'm going to take all of Hungary and insert it into my body like a VHS tape into a VCR, complete with all the clicking plastic sounds.
Anyway, some other bands I also really enjoy include:
Romer
Kárpátia
Kalapács
Bomber Army
Nemzeti Front
(Some of these may not be "Tumblr" level "wholesome", if you get what I mean)
I would be delighted to hear some suggestions for Hungarian music, no matter the genre! Hungary forever!!
Perhaps you may be interested in other Hungarian music that isn't rock? I also love Zoltán Kodály, he composed a lot of church music, as well as the only Hungarian opera I'm aware of, "Háry János".
I need to land this plane, here I am talking about Hungarian rock and opera in the same post. I'm so in my element and I'm loving it. It's taking every ounce of self control I have to shut up about this.
