What do trans people ask for? Healthcare that allows them a decent quality of life, informed by the best evidence-based information we have. Addressing the violence they face at such higher rates compared to the general population. Addressing issues of job discrimination. Ultimately, all things that every marginalized group wants. Just asking for the ability to exist in public and have full lives.

By taking trans people's opposition to the ideology that kills them, and pretending it's an attack and some kind of hostile takeover of society, she emboldens transphobes again. She's a public popular voice that fuels their self-righteousness. While leaving space for people to say "she wasn't talking about trans individuals, so she can't be transphobic."

This has the same function as dogwhistles. Those involved in the struggle - transphobes and trans people - get the message that trans people are a danger in her eyes. Those that don't have enough context, see the outcry and say "that's not exactly what she said, you're exaggerating, you want to create an issue." I've had people in my inbox saying that the accusations of her transphobia were debunked, and this is what they mean. This is why bigots use dogwhistles and coded terminology. They make their "concerns" sound legitimate, and make us sound like we're overreacting and demonizing them.

And what's interesting to me is that she uses one aspect of Death Eater ideology that I don't really see anyone in reality oppose: the desire to not hide anymore. That, to her, makes us comparable to them.
