Bigots are very good at plausible deniability.

Let's look at what JKR said.

I would say that some of you have not understood the books. The Death Eaters claimed, ‘We have been made to live in secret, and now is our time, and any who stand in our way must be destroyed. If you disagree with us, you must die.’ They demonized and dehumanized those who were not like them.

I am fighting what I see as a powerful, insidious, misogynistic movement, that has gained huge purchase in very influential areas of society.

She very carefully doesn't say trans people are like Death Eaters. She compares the activism, the fight towards liberation, to the ideology of the Death Eaters. "I'm not against you as people - I'm against your fight to free yourselves and change the systems that kill you."

She talks about "whoever opposes us must die" - which has never been something trans people work towards. They don't kill, they are murdered regularly. She talks about demonizing and dehumanizing those who aren't like them - which, again, trans people don't do. It's something that's done to them.

What do trans people ask for? Healthcare that allows them a decent quality of life, informed by the best evidence-based information we have. Addressing the violence they face at such higher rates compared to the general population. Addressing issues of job discrimination. Ultimately, all things that every marginalized group wants. Just asking for the ability to exist in public and have full lives.

By taking trans people's opposition to the ideology that kills them, and pretending it's an attack and some kind of hostile takeover of society, she emboldens transphobes again. She's a public popular voice that fuels their self-righteousness. While leaving space for people to say "she wasn't talking about trans individuals, so she can't be transphobic."

This has the same function as dogwhistles. Those involved in the struggle - transphobes and trans people - get the message that trans people are a danger in her eyes. Those that don't have enough context, see the outcry and say "that's not exactly what she said, you're exaggerating, you want to create an issue." I've had people in my inbox saying that the accusations of her transphobia were debunked, and this is what they mean. This is why bigots use dogwhistles and coded terminology. They make their "concerns" sound legitimate, and make us sound like we're overreacting and demonizing them.

And what's interesting to me is that she uses one aspect of Death Eater ideology that I don't really see anyone in reality oppose: the desire to not hide anymore. That, to her, makes us comparable to them.

The closet is a death sentence to so many queer people, and that includes trans people. And she uses this against us. She doesn't want us to have public lives. She really doesn't want us to exist.
