September's Scrumptious Fictions
Another month where I wish I could have read more fictions! But definitely some gems in the ones I did read, among which a couple of stories that touched me at a very a deep level, and I'm so, so glad I read them!
As usual I will tag the writers whose Tumblr usernames i know, so they can know they bring joy to their readers. Hope you enjoy these lovely stories as much as i did! If you do, please, please, please, let the writers know!
WIPs:
Wavelengths & Frequencies by @shadesofecclescakes and imposterssyndrome @maaikeatthefullmoon (Rated E, chapters 9/?)
If you feel like you're going through one of those phases where you need to curl up on a sofa with a cup of hot chocolate and something good to read, something safe and reassuring, then this fantastic fiction is for you. It's a human AU enemies-to-lovers fiction where Aziraphale and Crowley can't stand each other, but work for the same media corporation as radio DJs and have to attend charity events together. The characterisation is spot on and the humour great. And what an incredible soundtrack! I honestly can't tell you how happy each notification of a new chapter of this story makes me!
You're The Bad Guys by Nebz_AlphaCentauri @alphacentaurinebula (Rated E, chapters 12/?)
Cold War human AUs in which Aziraphale is an MI6 agent ans Crowley a KGB agent. They get assigned to the same mission in Berlin in 1981. They're on opposite sides. Great characterisation and suspense! And great nods to canon!
Love Lost Is Sweeter When It's Finally Found... by Hopeless_old_romantic_67 (Rated E, chapters 13/?)
After the Second Coming has been averted God allows Crowley and Aziraphale to live as humans for as many loves as they want, but with no memory of who they really are. Welcome to a Quantum Leap-y fiction, inspired by the video Past Loves by Børns. Unlike me, most of you will probably get all the names refernces!
My own WIP And I Did (Rated E, chapters 9/14)
Post season two fiction featuring Supreme Archangel Aziraphale and Grand Duke of Hell Crowley. Satan tasks Crowley with leading Hell to the End of the World. God tasks Aziraphale with leading Heaven to the End of the World. They both have made their choice and they were never going to make a different one.
Complete works:
Wrong Turn by anticyclone, D20Owlbear (Rated Teen, 37,565 words)
Honestly, I don't know why this fiction touched me so much. I just couldn't stop thinking about it for days after I finished it. It's a post season 1 fiction where Crowley suddenly finds himself in a parallel universe at the time the apocalypse is just about to happen. The Crowley and Aziraphale in that universe have a different history to our Crowley and Aziraphale. All our Crowley wants to do is to go back to his universe and his very own angel, but how? As you follow the main plot and focus on Crowley's thoughts and actions, you'll start slowly feeling the other story get hold of you, and it won't let go until the very end and beyond.
Happiness, More Or Less by mllekurtz (TheKnittingJedi) (Rated M, 21,445 words)
If you read only one story out of this list, make it this one. This human AU moved me so very much I cried. Crowley moves into his new flat in Soho, only to discover the flat in haunted by the ghost of the owner of the bookshop downstairs. I won't tell anything else about the plot other than it does have a very sweet happy ending, and it gets there via a rollercoaster of emotions. This is really one of those fictions that leave me in awe of the fandom's talent and creativity. Read it, read it, read it!
Time Marches Forward by @bellisima-writes (Rated M, 129,182 words)
Post season two story with an incredible plot! This story has multiple POVs, including Adam's, who's one of the main characters, and rightly so! Aziraphale is in heaven as supreme archangel, while on earth Adam and Crowley form a very strong bond. We follow their journey in the two years between the end of season two and the second coming. Lots of angst with a very happy ending!
One Shots:
Accidental Sleepover by MetalMiez (Rated Teen, 11,525 words)
Set after season one, this fiction is a sweet account of how Crowley and Aziraphale get to confess their feelings to each other. There are references to season two, but in this what-if universe it never happened.
We Keep Love In A Photograph by @itsscottiesstark (Rated G, 2,066 words)
A very sweet and credible account of what might have happened next on that night in 1941, and what Aziraphale and Crowley's thoughts might have been.
One Perfect Day by PirateFanatic (Rated Teen, 4,821 words)
Canon universe story where Crowley and Aziraphale are safe. In fact, they are about to go to a wedding. As Aziraphale dresses up, Crowley moans that he doesn't want to go, but Aziraphale doesn't give him a choice. And, in the words of the writer, with good reason.
The Bentley And The Pumpkin by graywings @smua70 (Rated G, 1,559 words)
Such an incredibly sweet and fun story, told in the Bentley's POV! The poor car was feeling lonely there in the South Downs, away from the hustle and bustle of London. But not to worry, she'll have her happy ending!

We're back for the third time! Here are the how to, rules and prompts for Cardfight Vanguard Prompt Week 2024! Mark October 7th - 13th in your calendars!
How it works:
Chose a prompt that speaks to you and create something related to that theme. You can also combine several prompts if you so chose.
Post your creation on the day the prompt is assigned to, right here on tumblr.
Tag the post with #cfvweek2024
We will reblog all contributions in the tag onto this blog. Make sure to follow us so you can see them all!
If you post fanfiction to AO3, add them to the collection "CFV Prompt Week 2024".
Any and all sorts of contributions are welcome. Fanart, fanfictions, edits, moodboards, memes, playlists, headcanon posts, gifs etc.
If you end up missing the date of the prompt, don’t worry! We accept late entries as well.
Rules:
Please note that this week is specifically for the original CFV, CFV G and the V series reboot (which includes Shinemon and IF). This means no Overdress. Apologies to Overdress lovers, but it’s the former series that we want to keep alive in the present age.
We don't accept AI-generated content.
NSFW (violence, gore, M or E rated fics and such) content is allowed, but only if tagged appropriately.
You're welcome to combine your entries for this event with any other prompt events, writing or art challenges you want to participate in, such as Whumptober, Fictober, Flufftober, Omnious October etc.
Transcription of prompts under the cut:
Day 1: Favorite Minor Character | Sick Fic | Pets
Favorite Minor Character:
We Vanguard fans are SERIOUS about our side characters! Let's show some love to the fantastic characters that were given a jarring lack of content in the series! Maybe your favorite character overall is a member of the main cast, but now it's time to pick somebody from the sidelines to appreciate just as much!
Sick Fic:
What a classic we've got here today, folks. You don't necessarily have to write a fic for this (though it's totally encouraged)! Just create anything you want involving those down days. Characters getting sick in fiction can help show off so many neat and hidden traits, so be creative and make whatever you see fit (or not fit, because somebody is sick)!
Pets:
PETS! What more could you even ask for? We've got only a few pets to thrive off of in the show, so lets show some love to them… or maybe think up some original ones! Maybe somebody has a secret pet, or maybe there was a random line of dialogue about a pet at some point? Who knows what could happen, but it ought to be great.
Day 2: Favorite Team | PSYqualia | Memories
Favorite Team:
We've got SO many to choose from! And not even just the main teams like Q4 and TRY3; how about silly little teams like the iconic Miwa-Morikawa-Izaki-Emi squad? Go wild! Whether it be a competitive Vanguard playing team, or just characters that work well together, there's bound to be some really great teams to make stuff for!
PSYqualia:
Now here's something real intriguing… PSYQualia was the fictional power used to communicate with the Planet Cray and the illustrated cards that came from it, but it had drawbacks. Will you represent it in its corruptive origins, or its positive future? Go for it!
Memories:
I'm sure everyone has some kind of fond memories that came from Vanguard, or maybe you'll want to represent how memories are presented by the characters! A large amount of the series revolves around memories, surprisingly enough- Misaki's whole life is pretty much centered around them, and Seasons 2 and 4 seriously threw us for a doozy. Let's make this a day to remember!
Day 3: Favorite Outfit | Fluff | Magic AU
Favorite Outfit:
YIPPEE!!! Maybe that's a little exaggerated, but c'mon- who doesn't love a good outfit. Vanguard's got some seriously cool fits, if not just for the characters, then on the card art! Look around and find your inspiration, or maybe even create an outfit you'd think would be a fan favorite!
Fluff:
No one could ever lie and say they don't like fluff. Sweetness, love, care, and everything in-between. It can be soft, tooth-rotting, comforting! Do as you please and pick out your favorite fantasies for this one, we're sure it'll be more than appreciated.
Magic AU
Vanguard has its fair share of magical elements! But what if they got taken in slightly different way, a step to the left? Or maybe even a leap! Are they all wizardly figures? Magical girls? Maybe there's just something 'magical' in the air? Go wild, throw out a magic-based alternate universe!
Day 4: Favorite Relationship | Betrayal | Cray & Lore
Favorite Relationship:
Besties, lovers, enemies, and everything in-between, everyone loves a compelling relationship. But which one is your favorite? Are you enamored with the way some characters hate each other? Or maybe you just really want to show off your favorite ship! Pick your favorite Vanguard relationship, and if you have multiple? The more the merrier!
Betrayal:
Uh oh… There's no shortage of evil in Vanguard, and betrayal can come from anywhere. Does it coincide with the Reverse, PSYqualia, or maybe just human nature? Pick an act of betrayal or make up your own, because - no matter what, it's gonna hurt real good.
Cray and Lore:
The planet Cray is SO COOL and SO UNEXPLORED! Delve deep into the lore of the planet, or think up something fresh and cool for it! Blaster Blade and Dragonic Overlord are only the tip of this awesome iceberg, and there's endless things to explore!
Day 5: Favorite Episode | Family | Birthday
Favorite Episode:
Can you even believe there's 196 episodes JUST in the original run, and hundreds more after that? With all that Vanguard, you're bound to have some favorite episodes! Let's all skim through the runs and pick a favorite to represent, there's so so so many to enjoy!
Family:
Family comes in all shapes and sizes, and the Vanguard characters became a family over and over again, without a doubt. Choose a family in Vanguard, by blood or not, to create for, and enjoy!
Birthday:
We've got TWO BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK! Today is Mamoru Anjou's birthday, and Kourin Tatsunagi's is on the 13th of October! Show them some extra love, or maybe pick another birthday to celebrate! We love our characters, and their birthdays, whether fictional or not, are always fun.
Day 6: Favorite Clan | Crossover | Secret Identity
Favorite Clan:
I know, I know… This might be an impossible task. But we have to try! Pick a Vanguard clan that you can call your favorite, and show it some appreciation! This can extend out to newer or old standards of clan systems, in any way you like!
Crossover:
Vanguard has endless opportunities to pair up with other series, it's all pretty open! Crossovers are ALWAYS FUN, and it's refreshing to play with other media that we also love! Maybe one of your favorite shows has Vanguard cards in it now, or maybe Vanguard characters are in the book you're reading or new anime you're watching! Who knows, have fun!
Secret Identity:
Oooh… A secret! There's already representation of this trope in Vanguard plenty of times! Remember Ninja Master M, and the Team Unknown debacle? The time Kyou was the Abominable Snowman? Maybe even make up your own, go wild! Whether it's online or behind a mask, there's plenty of ways to hide your identity. But remember- it's a secret!
Day 7: Favorite Parallel | Endings & New Beginnings | FREE
Favorite Parallel:
Contrasting motives in media is probably one of the most exciting things I could ever think of. What contrasts and parallels do you see in Vanguard? Blaster Dark and Blaster Blade, perhaps? Character arcs, episode structures, the lore of the cards and the journey of our protagonists... There's parallels everywhere. Delve deep for this one, and find something really interesting to analyze!
Endings and New Beginnings:
Vanguard has some of our absolute favorite endings and beginnings ever, so why not go ahead and show them off? The transition of each arc, each era, each generation, is something to be celebrated. May it be the end of a big tournament, or the beginning of a new season altogether, or something totally different and unexpected!
FREE!
YOU'RE FREE! Do literally anything you want for this last day of CFV Week! Doodle assisticat, make a cool edit, take a picture of your CFV merch, throw out a moodboard, write a 200k word fic (okay, maybe don't try to do that in just one day). But, whatever you choose to do, let's end this week with a bang!
We cannot wait to see what you guys come up with!
Lots of Love, the mod team
PS: Don't forget to use #cfvweek2024 so we can easily find your contributions!
Additionally, you can tag us if you’d like, to make sure we see your posts!

What's up, my friends???
I promised you all in June that I would be back in August for another massive post. Here I am!
Today is August 13th, better known as the 39th birthday to the man who through his body of work has inspired happiness, sadness, fury, laughter, tears, a little bit of fear, and of course, lust beyond our wildest dreams.
He's been a sergeant turned assassin turned Avenger. He's been a witch and a mad hatter, a doctor and astronaut. He's been an undercover detective and a corrupted sheriff who's pretty nifty with a Pepsi cup. He's been an especially bendy gold medalist and will pretend to be your cousin just to steal your money. He's been a race car driver, a pentagon suit, and a husband who will take out his wife's competition at the knees all the while rocking an awesome pornstache. He's gotten naked and shown us his cheeks, he's even graced the screen with glasses and pouty lips making us forget for a moment that he was spree killer. And very soon, we will get to see him as a world famous rockstar with a to die for sextape. I'm speaking of course of the talented, incomparable Sebastian Stan!!!
You all know how much I try to support every author on this site I come across by either following, liking, or reblogging. These past two years, I have had the privilege of coming across some very memorable stories featuring various forms of Sebastian Stan's many characters. I spent the last two weeks compiling a list of 30 of my absolute favorite stories.
Before we begin, be advised some of these stories are dubious consent, non-con, daddy kink, mommy kink, spitting, squirting, oral m/f receiving, creampie, anal, double penetration, explicit language, and all other manner of kinks I did not realize I enjoyed until joining this fandom.
So let's jump right in!
@shurisneakers ~ Harmless ~ Bucky Barnes
I'm about maybe ten chapters in. It's hard to tell because the story flows so seamlessly. You've got a "villian" that S.H.I.E.L.D. constantly monitors, and lo and behold Bucky is assigned to the mission. This one's such a hidden gem!
@luxeavenger ~ Backstage Pass ~ Rockstar!Bucky Barnes
This is probably the sixth or seventh Rockstar!Bucky story I've read and it's only renewed my love for Sebastian Stan and his Tommy Lee look. I've never, ever fantasized about what it might be like to fall in love with a rockstar, let alone two, but Backstage Pass has me longing for the days when music was still worth wanting to follow the band.
@navegandoaciegas ~ No sweeter innocence than our gentle sin ~ Innocent!Priest Bucky Barnes
Whew! This one is a trip. Usually, in these types of stories, the priest is the predator. In this one, Bucky is the prey. It's everything you didn't realize you wanted in a story.
@jobean12-blog ~ Drawn to Love ~ Bucky Barnes
I love visiting this blog. The writing here reminds me of @donutloverxo in that you get a sense of a sweet, gentle reader almost every time with their partners always being loving and protective. This particular story was written in response to Marvel's What If...? I enjoyed this story so much that I'm not concerned whether I watch the actual show or not. It's that good.
@gotnofucks ~ Their Surrogate ~ Dark!Bucky & Dark!Steve
This one was rough. So well written! In the beginning, despite heeding the warnings, you think Bucky and Steve are these wonderful men just looking to make their family complete by having a child. It's actually so much worse than that! Dibs is amazing and I'm never disappointed or left wanting with her stories. You read Their Surrogate and you'll see why!
@avintagekiss24 ~ Contour ~ Shadow Monster!Bucky
Brittany is one of the most talented, creative writers I have ever had the honor to read from. I never imagined sex with a shadow monster, even if the shadow monster is Bucky. Yet, she makes it happen, and afterwards, once you've calmed down, I guarantee you will actively search the shadows of your bedroom walls wishing it was Bucky looking back at you.
@river-soul ~ A Tender Heart ~ Alpha!Bucky Barnes
A/B/O stories can go either way. A Tender Heart, however, gives you a burgeoning love story between a shy Omega and an Alpha who's very conscious of the people's perception of his former life.
@afriendlyblackhottie ~ Nosey ~ Bucky Barnes
This story is a lot of fun. Essentially, Bucky has a gorgeous girlfriend that he's keeping a secret from the team because those guys are, as the title says nosey as hell.
@mypoisonedvine ~ Liberation ~ 70s!Bucky Barnes
Bucky is a bastard in this, I have to say it. But I love the 1970s setting and the attitudes of the era. In this one, the story is completely from Bucky's POV, and as his agitation rises, you know he's going to do something bad to the "mouthy feminist".
@jaybrogers ~ The Ballad of Ghost Bucky ~ Ghost!Bucky
This one is written in the style of a folktale. It reminds me of those unsettling songs and poems in between the stories written in Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
@foxgloveprincess ~You Just Have To Wait ~ Naga!Bucky & Minotaur!Steve
This one is a follow-up to her monster story, It's A Game of Give and Take. The reader is now in a fully developed relationship with Bucky and Steve. There are a lot of comical mishaps and bad timings before we get to see what it's like to make love with a Naga and Minotaur. Fun fact: I'm not at all fond of snakes, but Bucky as a Naga with a bonus appendage weakens my resolve!
@nellblazer ~ Check Out Anytime You Like ~ Ghost!Bucky Barnes
Bucky is not the central character in this fic, but his tragic backstory and the fragility of his emotions resonated with me in such a way that he's the first person I think of whenever this story comes to mind.
@marvelmaree ~ Reverse ~ Bucky Barnes
I'm all about Bucky getting the love story he deserves after so much suffering. This story not only delivers on that front, but we get to go to Wakanda!!!
@jimblejamblewriting ~ Not Quite a Soldat ~ Bucky Barnes
This is one of the best Bucky centric fics I've ever read. It's set in the beginning of Captain America The Winter Soldier and tells the difference in Bucky's story if only he had one more person in his corner.
@angrythingstarlight ~ Bucky's Goats ~ Bucky Barnes
Star has a plethora of Bucky stories. I chose this classic because it's set in Wakanda and we get to see Bucky's goats. Something that seems to be a distant memory now.
@navybrat817 ~ A Familiar Face ~ Bucky Barnes & The Winter Soldier
You're married to James Buchanan Barnes, what could be better than that? Getting a visit from the Winter Soldier.
@syntheticavenger ~ Right + Click + Save ~ Bucky Barnes
This is one of the more lighthearted fics on Synths page. Bucky is completely tech inept here and it's such a sweet story.
@msruchita ~ The Institute ~ Sebastian Stan / Destroyer!Chris / Dr. Chris Beck / Carter Baizen / Bucky Barnes / Chase Collins / Lance Tucker / Charles Blackwood / Hal Carter
The Institute is written like an amalgamation of all of our fantasies. You end up accepted into a school you don't remember applying for and eight of Sebastian's characters are there serving as your professors and administrators, as well as Sebastian himself.
@dreamlessinparis ~ Informal Affairs ~ Mob!Bucky Barnes
Mob!Bucky is one the best Bucky character arcs. Coupling this with a tale of redemption and love preserving, Informal Affairs is a refreshing change from the usual mob boss stories.
@littlelioncub43 ~ Forts and Sweet Boys ~ College!Justin Capshaw
Lately, there has been a surge of Justin Capshaw stories and drabbles. Sebastian appeared on a episode of Law & Order titled 'Shelter' in 2003, as Justin Capshaw who was a 15-year-old sniper with a heartbreaking backstory. This single episode attests to the versatility of Sebastian's acting range. Forts and Sweet Boys is a delicious and heartfelt glimpse into the world of Mommy Kinks.
@constantwriter85 ~ Seasons of Love ~ Bucky Barnes
This story deals with Bucky suffering from PTSD. He acquires the cutest service dog and like something out of 101 Dalmatians, ends up meeting the love of his life by means of mistaken doggy identity. This is a must read.
@lotusss-flowerbomb ~ Nice To Meet You ~ Bucky Barnes
One of her newer stories, Nice To Meet You takes place during The Falcon & The Winter Soldier. Rather it being only Sam and Sarah, they have another sister who is not afraid to call Bucky out on starting shit with Sam for handing over The Shield. With so many people having an adverse reaction to Bucky being romantically linked to Sarah Wilson because she's a black woman, this story is not only a middle finger to the face of racists, but it's a wonderful what if to the actual What If.
@sagechanoafterdark ~ All Good Things ~ Bucky Barnes
I love ghost stories and tales of the paranormal, but I'm not sure if I could be as calm as the reader in this story when she realize Bucky's ghost is in her apartment. But I finished this series in under two hours because of how good it is. And like in any instance when the paranormal is involved, nothing is ever as it appears to be.
@sweetlyscared ~ You Found Me ~ Bucky Barnes
Soulmate fics are always either really sweet or really tragic. You Found Me combines both. If you didn't already hate Hydra before (of course you do, what's wrong with you?) you definitely will when you read You Found Me.
@slothspaghettiwrites ~ Give me a hand to hold and skin to taste ~ Demon!Lee Bodecker
Who of us has not felt the bitter sting of loneliness? The solution? Summon a crossroads demon! This story is one my go to rereads.
@giorno-plays-piano ~ Orc!Bucky Imagine ~ Orc!Bucky
I usually don't list headcannons because I end up finding something a bit longer to reference, but this one was more of a story formatted like a headcannon. The story itself was a take on the vicious battles waged between humans and orcs. Bucky takes captive the daughter of the humans who slew his parents and cut off his arm. This story would make a killer novella.
@sinner-as-saint ~ Cherry ~ Mob!Sebastian
Some of the greatest Bucky Barnes stories I have read in the past come from @sinner-as-saint particularly the Mafia stories. Cherry is a Mob series that almost immediately gained its popularity through Seb's ruthlessness in his business and softness with his girl. This was my first foray in the Mob world and I've been hooked ever since.
@boxofbonesfic ~ Daylight Robbery ~ Thief!Bucky
Just seeing Thief!Bucky is enough to make you want to read this story. Seeing Bucky actually break into someone's apartment and then get taken down by a cast iron skillet! 😂 For a former assassin he really lacks in paying attention to apartment numbers. If you missed Daylight Robbery, I strongly encourage you to read it. You won't regret it!
@moonbeambucky ~ Friday Night Fights ~ Wrestler!Bucky Barnes
I can't think of a better concept than combining one of the world's greatest loves (wrestling) with the greatest characters ever created (the avengers). This is such a fresh and innovative concept. I reread Friday Night Fights as often as I can. It brings back memories of being a kid and waiting for Smackdown every Thursday night.
@buckycuddlebuddy ~ Peaches series ~ Dadsbestfriend!Bucky Barnes
Usually, Dad's Best Friend stories are about as iffy for me as Stepdad stories, but this one is just too good to pass up. The smut, the emotions, even the concern over her parents finding out, all come together to make this a uniquely enthralling story.
So, thank you all for stopping by to help celebrate the man who has continued to entertain us for nearly twenty years and still going strong.
Happy Birthday, Sebastian!!! We love you!!
As always, let's close by enjoying some lovely edits by the talented @nix-akimbo

Powerpuff Girls 2016 - “Splitsville“
Written by: Haley Mancini, Jake Goldman
Written & Storyboarded by: Phil Jacobson, Sofia Alexander, John West
Directed by: Nick Jennings, Bob Boyle
Does it split sides, split opinions, or should you split?
The episode starts with the Powerpuff Girls fighting a giant monster. In fact, it’s the same giant monster from Princess Buttercup that keeps showing up randomly. He was even in Silico’s backstory as the monster that crashed into his house, destroying his toys. Either the Powerpuff Girls have not kept their promise to be more careful around residential areas, or this was the event. I'm going with coincidence.
After successfully defeating that monster, you’d think they’d be celebrating. After all, giant monster battles usually end with Monster Punch, Girls Down to the Reboot Puffs. Instead, each of them complains about how long it took. First we have Donny whining, then we have Buttercup whining, and now all of the reboot Puffs are whining this time. It sure is happening a lot this season!
While this is happening, all of their cellphones go off. Wait, so is the Mayor calling them all at once, or are they now taking calls from the public now? I really shouldn't care; we have two scenes once common in the original that are super rare in this reboot: monster fighting and getting emergency calls. Usually, they're too busy doing ordinary human things like messing with time machines and hanging out with jerk unicorns.
They challenge each other: whoever does their deed first gets to pick the movie for movie night. This episode really hammers in the girls' personalities, which, given the choice between having those personalities and having two characters play the same role, is not bad. It helps that they're closer to the original Puffs than being Urkel, Patrick Star, and Bart Simpson. Relatively speaking, of course; Reboot Blossom still loves those spreadsheets!
I have no nothing against the movie choices, either. Bearnado is a clear refence to Sharknado, but even to people unfamiliar to it could conclude that it's a movie parody so over the top, that it couldn't possibly exist. I could question a joke about a movie called "Cuddle Bunny" being banned in several countries, a continuation of a gag Buttercup said about her movie, but I'm not so sure that wasn't intentional.
Buttercup's mission is to fight a slime dog. This job was made for her, because it involves fighting a giant monster, someone only Buttercup can do in this series for some reason! She even shows off her strength beforehand by flexing them into exaggerated beefy arms. Sorry to say, that is not going to be a gag exclusive to this episode.
Buttercup tries to punch the slime dog, but it splits into two. Buttercup says it's no problem, and punches one of the dogs again, spliting it into two. It keeps going and going until she's surrounded by slime dogs ready to tear her apart.
Even though it's a creature that can't be hurt by such actions, we can't see Buttercup actually make contact with it with her fists or her feet. It's a wonder if this is the fault of the toymakers, the writers, or Cartoon Network's higher-ups. I hope it's not the latter, but how every new show on Cartoon Network has a TV-Y7 rating after years of TV-PG shows makes me think it loudly.
Bubbles' mission is to help a farmer, his goose, his fox, and a bag of seed across a river. This job was made for her, because it's about cute animals! This segment is a reference to the famous fox, goose, and bag of beans puzzle.
Of course, she can't just move the fox, because the goose would eat the seed. She can't just move the seed, because the goose would roughhouse the fox! I didn't think they were going to play it that straight, so it's not exactly unexpected. It's a running gag with the goose. Bubbles is still at square one, and it's only going to get worse.
Blossom has to go to a library and fight a brain robot, who is tearing it apart reading every book in it. The robot does this in the most destructive and loud way possible to justify a beating. This job was made for her, because she's a nerd who likes libraries. In her own words, "swish."
Because she's the plan girl, she decides to come up with a plan. It boils down to her tilting a laptop screen, using her eye lasers to cut a rope holding a giant chandelier that happens to be directly over the robot. One may wonder why cut out the middle man and just aim the eye lasers at the rope, but that wouldn't be convoluted enough.
Before she was even finished with that plan, the robot throws the chandelier at her. Robot Punch, Girl Down. Of course. It may not be that, as the robot knows so much from all of that added knowledge, that he can predict her every move! Huh, sounds familiar. He then tells Blossom that she'll be bored of the Dewey Decimal system as he pelts Blossom with decimals. Add that to the Powerpuff Girls new weaknesses.
Meanwhile, Buttercup is still in trouble. She tried punching, kicking, punching harder, kicking harder, but nothing seems to work. It would have been more creative if she kept trying different things, but all she really did was punch and kick. This would have been a good time for the aura powers, which don't even show up.
She yells at the dogs to stop, and to her surprise, they stop. Buttercup is confused until she realizes that the slime dogs are dogs. She tells them to sit, they sit. She tells them to roll over, they roll over. She finds this adorable, in a scene that should be out of character, but is actually hinting towards the point of the episode.
Minutes later on Bubbles' side of things, she still can't seem to figure it out. Not helping is that it turns out the goose was keeping out annoying tourists as well. With this and the Yeti subplot of Snow Month, the show seems to have a hatred for outsiders. Instead of thinking, Bubbles tries a different strategy: doing a dance across a bunch of rocks across the river, and tell the others to follow along. Eh, it fits her character.
Bubbles: Way to go, guys! Mission Bubbles-complished!
Ugh, this show’s puns are Butter-terrible. It’s about as good as that one! Unfortunately, none of the people, animals, and seed follow her. The farmer outright tells her that she needs to use her brain for this puzzle. Yeah, good luck with that.
Meanwhile, Blossom tries to do another plan by trying to catch him off guard by trying to attack him while he's distracted by her chit-chat. Silly Blossom, that only works on Reboot Puffs! She gets taken down by being buried by books, and getting hit by a punch...card. Because libraries. Another thing to add to the Powerpuff Girls' new weaknesses!
This is my least favorite of the three segments, which is sad because Blossom is my favorite of the three reboot Puffs. Granted, that's mostly by default. This segment will get worse from here.
While Blossom and Bubbles are nowhere near solving their assigned crises, Buttercup seems to be doing just fine. She trained them well enough to make them form. She then says that "Bubs will love this!", subtlely giving a clue on what is happening. She tells them to play dead...
...and Buttercup gets covered in rainbow blood. It took me a while to realize what happened, and when it hit me, I found it kind of clever. I blame the show not using the right sound effect. I am reminded that, if the blood was red, this would have had to be on Adult Swim Toonami. That's an article for another time.
Meanwhile, Bubbles is still trying to figure it out as more and more people have to get across the river. A Dick Dastardly guy shows up, the Townsville Women's Basketball Team shows up, Sherlock Holmes shows up, and a raptor king shows up!
Bubbles gets an idea from her mentor in her head: Buttercup, who tells her she's not her mentor. In a bit of comedy, Bubbles acts like Buttercup actually told her to act like Blossom. While Buttercup's scene slightly hinted at the point this episode was trying to make, this part outright says it.
I guess she had to be told to think, as she does, and she instantly knew the correct answer! She brings everyone to the other side of the river except for the Dick Dastardly guy, who is left on the raft to careen over a waterfall to his persumed death. Bubbles doesn't seem to mind, and neither does anyone else. I guess he was that awful.
Blossom also gets an idea from her mentor in her head, which happens to be herself. Honestly, with Patrick Star and the rascally little green princess, I’d be my own mentor, too. Buttercup didn't get a scene like this, she just figured it out on her own. They sure favor Buttercup over everyone else; she's usually the one that has to save the other two. Good news, this is not one of those episodes.
Since Bubbles figured it out the Blossom way, and Buttercup figured it out the Bubbles way, it makes sense that Blossom figures it out the Buttercup way. Of course, that means she gets to have a fight scene. And, oh boy, here comes the bad news.
Blossom gives the robot a furious beatdown in the most exaggerated way possible, much like Mojo Jojo did in Forced Kin. They even decided not to do hit flashes for this scene, but it's hard to notice because...what am I looking at? Did they forget they were supposed to be rebooting the Powerpuff Girls, and decided to reboot The Brothers Grunt instead? I really hate to think that this scene is their response to people criticizing this show for its lack of violence. It wouldn’t surprise me.
They go back home at the same time, crashing through the walls. That seems like a minor thing to put in a review, but it's another aspect that happens so rarely in this reboot. They then decide to watch each other's movies, but can't decide on which sister deserves to watch their movie the most. It's a cute ending, and it's something deserving of a "so once again the day is saved", but we don't get one. I have my own theories, mostly based on the last episode, but I don't want to say them.
Does the title fit?
The Powerpuff Girls split, but there’s really no reason for the “ville”. They live in a place called Townsville, and they usually get calls from the mayor of said Townsville, so it could fit?
How does it stack up?
Outside of that one scene, this episode is actually decent. None of the characters are unlikable, the situations are mediocre at worst, and it fits the superhero narrative the show should have. I would put it among the episodes of the original's Season 5 and Season 6, and not one of the worse ones at that. That might be mediocre, but by this reboot's standards, that's pretty good!
Keep it up, but don't get too comfortable.
Next, we go fishing!
