The Road Trip Part 2

Writing scenes with 9 characters is haaaaard. 🥴

This story was developed on Discord with some mighty fine people in this community. The adaptation is mine.

The thought never occurred to me to question why Richy and Jessy were in such a rush to take a sudden, surprise road trip to the beach. To be honest, it had been so long since we all hung out together and so long since I had a decent vacation that I didn’t question it. So I joined them blindly and had Jake tag along reluctantly. I knew I should’ve started second guessing this grand plan as soon as I saw the state of our ride.

“This is the van?” I gestured apprehensively to the vehicle that looked older than me. “Are you sure that’s roadworthy?”

“You can trust in my mechanic intuition,” Richy grinned as he placed a hand on the side of the van.

Right on cue Lilly emerged from inside the van, “There’s a hole in the floor!”

“That’s just cosmetic damage,” Richy explained. “The wooden board is there so you don’t put your foot through while you’re getting in and out.”

“Some mechanic you are,” Lilly frowned.

Suddenly there was a tapping on the window. Cleo shouted from the back of the van, “It’s hot in here! Can we hurry it up? The cake’s going to melt!”

“Yes, let’s go!” Jessy came up and pushed us along.

One by one we filed into the 12-person van that had clearly seen better days. Jake and I sat in the middle row with Richy, Lilly and Cleo behind us and Dan and Jessy directly in front. Hannah had drawn the short straw and took first shift at the wheel while Thomas rode shotgun. The van quickly filled with excited chatter as it took us out of Duskwood. So much chatter that it didn’t occur to us until we were 20 minutes away from civilisation that the temperature inside the van wasn’t dropping.

“Hey! Could you guys turn up the a/c? We're getting nothing back here!” Cleo complained.

“Yeah, hackerman's going to roast in his hoodie,” Dan teased Jake, who shot him a momentary glare from under his hood before going back to his laptop.

Thomas frowned as he fiddled with the controls, “Uh, it is already on max.”

“That’s it!?” Jessy asked exasperated while fanning herself.

“Ah, just open a window,” Richy responded simply as he shifted to open the window across from him.

However, it wasn’t so easy.

“My window’s not opening,” Jessy announced in defeat.

“Neither is this one,” Cleo confirmed.

“Richy!” Jessy shouted. “You did check the electrics, didn’t you?”

Richy paused for a moment, “You know, I didn’t think to check the windows. I’m sure it'll be fine. It’s not that hot today.”

Oh how we came to dread those words. It was as if those jinxing words had some special summoning power because as soon as they were uttered there was an unmistakable sound of flatulence through the van. A moment later, Jessy and I were overwhelmed by the most toxic stench. The row behind me soon joined us in our cries of disgust. Jake could no longer ignore the smell and looked up from his laptop in disgust.

“Dan!!” Jessy exclaimed.

“Sorry,” he apologised.

“I have never been subjected to something so foul,” Jake hissed as he covered his face with his sleeve.

“Oh God, what did you eat?” Thomas turned around to look behind him.

“You all were rushing me and there wasn’t much time so I ate the leftovers from the other night as quickly as I could,” Dan responded nonchalantly.

“What leftovers?” Jessy questioned. “Hang on, tell me you didn’t eat the chilli!”

Dan didn’t need to verbally respond. His digestive system responded for him.

“Pull over now!” Lilly demanded.

“Already on it!” Hannah announced.

“But we’re making good time,” Richy argued.

The girls all chorused, “No!!”

“Ok, ok, pull over as soon as you can,” Richy conceded.

Thankfully there was a rest stop just two exits away, but even that felt like an eternity. As soon as Hannah parked Jessy threw the side door open and we rushed to get out as soon as possible into the fresh, clean air. Let me tell you, the air beside a freeway never felt so clean before as it did that day!

Jessy was quick to usher Dan to the bathroom inside. Lilly hit up the gas station for any sort of fan and Richy attempted to fix the wiring while there was a free moment. The others took the opportunity to cool off and breathe in the fresh air. I could have sworn I heard Cleo lamenting over the state of her cake while we waited.

I looked over at Jake standing in the shade with his hood fully pulled over to block out as much of the sun as possible. From what I could see of his face sweat was dripping down, which wiped away with his sleeve.

“You should take your hoodie off,” I encouraged.

“No, I'm good,” he shook his head.

“Don’t be silly, you’re overheating!” I pushed.

Jake stepped back, “I’ll just burn in the sun.”

“You’re being ridiculous, Jake,” Hannah approached. “Take off the hoodie.”

“No,” Jake tried to sound stalwart, but it came out more like a whimper.

“Come on, Jake,” I moved towards him.

“Give us your hoodie,” Hannah circled around to the other side him.

Jake shrieked as Hannah grabbed him around the waist and I pulled his hoodie off over his head. What hid underneath was an unexpected surprise.

“Jake, is that...?” a smile crept on my face.

“Is that a banana stripping?” Hannah looked confused at the cartoon banana throwing off its peel on his shirt.

“I-I...,” Jake looked away embarrassed.

“Aw, you’re wearing the shirt I bought you!” I grinned.

Jake blushed, “Um, yes...”

“It looks cute on you,” Hannah ruffled up his hair.

“What’s the matter? Missed laundry day?” Dan joked from behind me.

I turned around and frowned at him, “Shouldn't you be dealing with your chilli problem?”

“He assures me it has been dealt with, “ Jessy rolled her eyes as she walked up beside Dan.

Richy slammed the hood of the van closed, “So we're good to go again?”

“You tell us, did you fix the problem?” Cleo questioned.

“Uhh...,” Richy hesitated. “Maybe?”

“In other words, he has no idea what the cause of the problem is,” Jessy rolled her eyes.

Lilly returned to the group with two small portable fans, “It was all they had.”

“It’s better than nothing,” Cleo conceded.

“Alright, let’s go!” Dan started to march to the van, but was stopped by Lilly.

“Not so fast, we are going to be making some changes,” she glared at Dan.

Dan gulped, “Changes?”

“Yes, you in the back where you can do the least damage,” I teased.

“Little old me?” Dan responded hurt.

“You can join the rest of us when you’re clean again,” Jessy assured him.

And so we climbed back into the van. This time Lilly, Jessy, Cleo, Jake and I were in the first passenger row. Lilly sat on Jessy’s lap and I on Jake’s while Cleo protected the cake. Richy was the only one willing to sit in the second row and Dan had the entire back row to himself. He wasted no time gloating about how much space he had and laid down across the seats.

Ten minutes later, the flatulence had returned. It was so bad, Richy pleaded to be allowed in our row. Even if we were willing to accept him, there was just no space. After all, we had to protect the cake.

love these asks there’s so much here. ik what you mean about expecting better. eskam4 isn’t the worst season ever imo but it’s my least fave bc of the hopes & expectations i had going into it, given how much transformative effort they’d put into 1-3. ardi was saying recently about how at a certain point with these seasons, you’re stubborn about it ending one way (mayla endgame in s9, the kasim/amira/dani/lucas plot being different, ava/isi being addressed properly) not just for your own pride, but for the creators' sakes that they won't write something that embarrassingly bad.

re: anais, mailin & queerness - i’m the opposite where i don’t think anais is coded at all, i think the Heart Eyes™️ clip was just s10 set up eg: showing her being kind, establishing a link with maya. other than that there is nothing to suggest anais is queer imo and it’s so so so obvious when her stans use biphobia to dodge criticism like “you can’t call her straight just bc she kisses hugo in the finale, bi people exist!” etc. headcanon and stan whatever but don’t pretend anais being an attractive white girl doesn’t play a large role in the latter (bc it can’t be her ample screentime and riveting personal growth storyline that attracts you lol), and that the former isn’t all her “queerness” is rn lmao; you’re basically saying it’s fine that for the second time in the new gen they have picked a rich, cis white girl with a history of bullying and classism and transphobia over a trans man or a man of color bc she might be bi. (and if she is: who cares after how they already treated their actual bi character + their asian lesbian main? why not write max or redouane as bi, given there’s no current mlm characters?)

as for mailin…i think there’s things in s5 & 6 that could be read as hints of her being aromantic and/or asexual (but not gay/bi tbh), but it’s not definitive, like it could just as much be she’s inexperienced. i wouldn’t be surprised if ace!mailin was jünglinge’s plan given how careful they were about setting up other plots up from 5 > 6, though i honestly don’t think they were going to give mailin a season. regardless it’s not confirmed and like anais, even if it is, this is a really good post about whiteness, racism & queerness in fandom, and i can’t find it rn but i know there’s a post about who gets to even be seen as worthy of queer headcanons in the skamverse too (black characters almost never, white characters almost always), which plays a part in the queer mailin stuff. (also re: mailin dating a guy…as soon as that writer said zoefinn needed to break up for a s8 plot, i thought they’d reveal finn was ace too and pair him with mailin 🥴)

anyways would you be surprised to learn that there’s actually anais stans who hate mailin and mailin stans who hate anais and both think s8/s10 should’ve had different mains and both feel superior to each other? 😭
