wakaba flourishing on the brain. rgu really said the only people who have any genre awareness in this story are either 1) guy who is masterminding the perpetual motion machine of abuse while still being part of it or 2) 14 year old with a big beautiful onion head who is discovering the number one incorrect discovery you make at 14: you're not special and you never can be
#you dont discover that youre wrong abt that for another decade i think#wakaba's outside eye in the black rose arc is so spectacular fr like she is the only person who really seems to see things as they are#but of course she is also 14 and has a crush and misses her best friend and that clouds everything pretty much#wakaba shinohara#rgu

bro there are SO many fucked up little things down there. it's so fuckin cool
you did not ask for an infodump but im explainin this shit anyway bc it's WILD
right so these dudes. it's 1885 and they've been at sea for almost three years and they have this GIANT rope right. they have been all over the world using this rope to lower scientific tools to collect data like temperature/floor sediment on the ocean floor. so they make it to the pacific and think "ok just a few more stops" and they lower the rope. and keep lowering it. and lower it some more. until they run out of rope. ten THOUSAND feet of rope and they ran out.
so naturally they go "hey what the fuck" and the scientists on board are FREAKING out because there was this dude who had the abyssal theory or something that said basically life cant exist after a certain depth in the ocean. and they go "put the net in the water RIGHT NOW" and so they do. and they spend WEEKS pulling up big piles of mud and picking through it to find tiny shells and animals. so obviously that dude was Way Wrong which they were super excited about
eventually they make it back to england and with the specimens they preserved in brine and stuff they fill 30000 (THIRTY THOUSAND) pages of tiny font info. just on and on and on. squids and isopods and fish and SHARKS. all from the mariana trench. AND ON TOP OF THAT they found species that had been thought to be extinct for DECADES !!
turns out the pacific tectonic plate basically shoved its way against/under the mariana plate (makin volcanoes obv which is the mariana islands) but basically just made this HUGE pit
(the ship they were on was the HMS Challenger, hence the Challenger Deep)
theey learn just how deep it gets 75 yrs later in 1960 when they send down a two person submersible (the famous story abt the craft where the viewing window cracked on the way down, most ppl have heard that even if they dont know where from)
and then in 1996 they send down an unmanned craft to collect some of the Goo that is all over the floor there and they discover microorganisms n stuff that Are The Goo which is cool
and finally in 2012 they send down Another submersible which is a whole other thing and he sees some WILD shit which is epic anyways they discover this phemonemon of Deep Sea Gigantism which is basically the deeper you go, the bigger shit gets
there is a certain kind of isopod which, in shallow waters, usually grows no bigger than two inches. this exact same animal with slight genetic mutations has been observed to become as long as A FOOT AND A HALF in the deep sea. not to mention all the big squids n stuff ig
anyways if you go deep enough into the challenger deep the pressure outside your craft is capable of literally dissolving bones so they think we probably won't find Actual Fish there but my two cents? sharks dont have bones...big shark >:)
one day i will rb with pictures but i cant pick my favorites atm
tumblr move the unfollow button away from the ask button on desktop challenge. anyway what's your opinion on the challenger deep
ITS SO ANNOYING RIGHT- HHH TUMBLR WHY
and I had to Google that but apparently it’s the deepest known point in the ocean and!!! THATS SO COOL- I wanna know what fucked up little creatures live down there
