fully expected to hate red white and royal blue and i'm not going to pretend like it was Good but it was cute and cheesy and funny honestly one of the better romcoms i've seen in the past few years and I guess I just find it ironic that so many queer people hate on it intrinsically as a concept because it's "cringe" or what the fuck ever

Well, fuck. That's not something I see brought up when people look back on DnD Satanic Panic and Jack Thompson. I didn't grow up in that era so most of what I know is second-hand. Thank you for the answer. Although it makes me dread right-wing/conservative christian types who today defend free speech/freedom of expression from sjws, but will restart their moral crusades and label all subject matter they don't like as degeneracy that has no place in society. Are people doomed to this forever?
Adding a divider so as not to spam timelines again.
Those types of people are doomed to fail. Because they make their arguments from the basis of a religious text, and when they try and argue absolutes of right and ring in a secular context, they always, demonstratively flow back to demanding our morals and fundamental logical standards come not from empirical evidence and liberalism, but from theorcratic dogma.
The religious right are mere end-tutorial boss fights compared to the headfucking that are cultural guerillas on the left, whom take the culture war away from the direction of trying to impose their organized, named religion with stated tenets and goals, and try to own not just secularism, but what goodness, justice, fairness, equality, mean.
Before the internet, anon, this was misery. Communicating these experiences were virtually impossible without committing social faux passes and alienating yourself to people that may have understood you because of similar trauma, but been too inarticulate to really do or say anything beyond nodding along with you.
Or worse. The ones that understood you agreed with you and decided you were together in your, “war against degeneracy,” making you wish you’d never confided with them about it, at all.
And even worse, people who recognize ANY dissent with the far-left so-called “progressive” that were really just TERFs, and do shit like toss links to “THE RABBITHOLE OF BECOMING ALT-RIGHT” with you’re talking about the assholes that try and repurpose and reshuffle elements of D&D on the basis that, “Races shouldn’t be by default good or evil.”
When the religious right tries to own comics and cartoons, you get “edutainment” which is just the most milquetoast asexual slop you could imagine, and “moral episodes” that WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE religious characters (maybe Jews but not Muslims or Buddhists. Preference for Christians) discovering or emphasizing their religious faith background.
When the “progressive” left does this, you get arguments about how videogames are a “toxic fraternity of dudebros” as an argument of why a bunch of rainbow hairs NEED to own the union dictating the standards and minimum quota of positive social messages for all videogames that are created in sold in North America.
You can see the sad, pathetic, easily crushed arguments of religious conservatives and the occasional visible alt-right loser a mile away. But the cultural guerillas on the hard left pretend their views are default majority progressivism, pretend they’re doing things, “in the name of anti-racism and anti-sexism,” right before firing all the white people from a school faculty because, “it wasn’t diverse enough and you can’t oppress majorities anyway.”
Before the existence of the internet where I could safely articulate my thoughts this way, and go on this long tangent, and not have to repeat myself, even giving you this information would’ve been impossible.
And that was what we dreaded, anon. How impossible it was to convey these experiences. How impossible it was for people to listen without giving it 2 minutes before that glazed over look in their eye from hearing mealy mouthed excuses by sexist and racist trash, and disregarding anything you said as just more of that because it wasn’t the rosey future picture and alleged goodness of feminism.
But uh.
Things.... changed. A lot.
Radical feminism used to be an unassaultable fortress existing in the minds of women and communicated like a fantasy. Communicating this to people that knew or cared, impossible. So the men and any dissenting women were disorganized and unable to organize resistance or thought against it.
Then the internet happened. Social media happened. “I never said that so you can’t substantiate the accusation against me” became, “well yes I typed that and those are my words in the time stamp.” You could PROVE those hateful people existed. You could PROVE their beliefs weren’t just flashes in the pan.
I sleep much better these days. Knowing this was an immovable object and a powder keg ready to burst based on the seeming infallible state they WERE in, well... it was something most of us knew was possible but dreaded having to fight.
We were not expecting them to fucking implode.
