Given the amount of love that Shakespeare and classical authors get I simply have to make a little advertising for a Renaissance masterpiece that, despite eveyhing, is deeply underappreciated and of which I've NEVER seen content here on this hellsite. Before revealing the title of the work I'll list a few points that maybe will interest you.
A huge cast of PoC. Their names don't give it away, I admit it, but their homeland is explicitly stated. And, better yet, a lot of them are direct protagonists and not just background characters.
Tridimensional women. They are in minority, true, but at least they act like a real person would and not just the damsel in distress. In fact, I don't think there even is a damsel in distress.
A really tangled plot, in which however most things make actual sense.
The reason for which everything goes down is a very dumb decision concerning a very smart girl, who manages to turn the events in her favor.
A love story, but not the love story you'd expect. Definitely not the love story you'd expect.
The biggest middle finger a man of the time could give to the whole "girl-as-a-prize" thing.
A badass lady in armour. Lesbians, this is for you.
Irony. So, so much irony.
At least according to my teacher, this is the first appearance of the hippogriff. Whose role is to carry a guy to the moon, nonetheless.
Magic. But you could already imagine that.
Lots of shipping available
The whole work is literally a fanfiction, that starts straight up after the end of the original one, and ended up being more famous.
If you're still with me you would want to know the name of this masterpiece, right? Well, is the
Orlando furioso
(Furious Orlando) by Ludovico Ariosto, direct sequel of the Orlando Innamorato (Orlando in love) by Baiardo.
Why did I wrote all of this?
Mostly, because I kept finding it way more entertaining that you'd expect a Renaissance work to be, and way less sexist and racist than most (as for the queerness... counting on you, Tumblr. I know you can do it).
And because I heard one too much person calling Angelica a bitch.
So let's go. Tell me what you think. If you think that Angelica was right, if you think that Orlando deserved all of this, if Sacripante is your poor little meow meow, if you just want Bradamante to stomp on you. I want all of your ships and headcanons.
