I’ve long held that connected lighting is one of the most sensible smart home upgrades you can invest in — in part, because it really doesn’t need to be much of an investment. Perfectly decent smart bulbs can be had for less than the price of a pizza, and once you buy in, you’ll use them each and every day, complete with the convenience and comfort of automated lighting that you can control with your voice.

There’s an exception though, or an asterisk perhaps, and that’s smart bulbs that can change colors. Even as the price of LED lights fell steadily over the past five years or so, color-changing bulbs from well-established names like Philips Hue and Lifx continued to sell at a steep premium. Even if you caught a good sale, you’d be lucky in most cases to get one for anything less than $30.

Things seem to be turning a corner in 2020, though — most notably with the Philips Wiz Connected Smart Wi-Fi LED. Available at Home Depot for just $13 each, it’s a full-fledged color-changer that needs no hub, and it supports voice control via Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri Shortcuts. Its colors aren’t quite as bright or vivid as you’ll get from our top performer in the color-changing category, the Lifx Mini LED, but they still do an admirable job at splashing accurate, eye-catching shades across your walls. Despite the fact that it doesn’t work with the Philips Hue app or with Hue’s immense list of third-party integrations, the bulb still finds plenty to offer via the surprisingly well-featured Wiz app.

All of that makes these bulbs a terrific and worthy value pick if you’re interested in changing up the colors in your home — and newly announced bulb shapes like a candelabra bulb and an outdoor-rated PAR38 bulb make it easy to expand your setup to include any fixture you like. If you’re interested in deeper integrations with third-party products and services, or advanced features that can sync your lights with your TV or with your music, then you’ll still need to spend up on something from Philips Hue, Lifx or Nanoleaf — but for simple, voice-activated, color-changing light that you can control and program from your phone, these Wiz Connected bulbs will do the trick for a fraction of the cost.

Light bulb basics

For the most part, the Philips Wiz Connected LED works like any other light bulb — just screw it in and turn it on when you want light. The default setting puts out a claimed 800 lumens of brightness at a yellowy color temperature of 2,700 K. That’s the same as you’ll get from a standard 60-watt incandescent light bulb, but since this is an LED we’re talking about, the power draw is much less — just 8.5 watts.

Those energy savings are worth noting. If you turned the Philips Wiz Connected LED on at full brightness and left it on for an entire year, it’d only add a little over $8 to your energy bill. For comparison, that old-fashioned, 60-watt incandescent would add almost $60 to your bill over the same stretch. Replace a bulb like that with the Philips Wiz Connected LED, then use it for an average of three hours per day — it’ll pay for itself in energy savings in about two years, then keep on shining for another 20 years.

As for the brightness, I’m still working from home without access to my lighting lab, so I can’t double-check the specific lumen count just yet. Still, in comparison with other bulbs I’ve tested in the past, including the Philips Hue White LED, it’s easy to see that the Philips Wiz Connected LED does just fine at default settings. That’s much better than the original Wiz LED, which was released before 2019, when the Hong Kong-based startup was purchased by Signify (formerly known as Philips Lighting). That bulb was too dim at its default setting, and only hit peak brightness at an awkward white light color temperature of 4,200 K.

The colors are much less bright than the white light settings, which is to be expected. What’s important is that they’re bright enough to make an impact, and for the most part, accurate in tone — though, it struggles to put out bold shades of yellow or orange. In some cases, the presets used by Alexa and Google aren’t the greatest, either. Ask either assistant for pink, for instance, and you’ll get milky white light.

Color quality is mostly accurate, but the bulb’s palette has a few weak spots.

Ugly-looking pinks aside, stalwarts like red, blue and green come through just fine — and if you open the Wiz app, you’ll find a color selector with dozens of different settings, including oddball Crayola rejects like “Razzmatazz,” “Free Speech Green” and “Gorse.” What’s extra odd is that Alexa and Google seem to recognize some of these settings (including a great-looking “Deep Pink”), but not all of them. Google Assistant seemed to recognize more of them, at least, sort of. When I asked it to jump to the “Macaroni and Cheese” setting, it triggered that ugly, milky white again — but that’s better than I got from Alexa, which just looked at me funny before adding mac and cheese to my grocery list.

The app also features a number of “dynamic” color settings that cycle through various shades. Some, like “Ocean” or “Forest,” follow a theme, while others just dance between random colors for romantic mood lighting, party-appropriate dance floor lights, or a simulated candle-like flicker. My big quibble here? There’s no way to activate these with your voice or via any third-party integration. You either have to turn them on in the app, or buy a physical Wiz remote and assign them to its customizable preset buttons.

An app that’s filled with tricks

With a clean interface and plenty of guidance, the Wiz app is simple enough to use — but what’s striking about it is the number of features it boasts, some of which you won’t even find in the Philips Hue or Lifx apps.

You’ll start by turning your bulb on and beginning the pairing process, which requires you to connect to the bulb’s Wi-Fi network so the app can add it onto your home network. It’s especially simple because the bulb uses its color capabilities to signal you along the way. For instance, when you set the bulb to pairing mode, it’ll start pulsing purple once its Wi-Fi network is ready for you to connect.

With the bulb up and running, you’ll specify the room it’s in and give it a name. From there, you’ll be able to turn it on and off and dim it up and own from the home screen. To change the color, tap whatever color is listed as “now playing” to pull up a full list of preset options, as well as the color selector where those oddly named shades are located. I just wish Wiz would relocate this color selector to the home screen so you don’t need an extra tap and scroll in order to pull it up.

Tapping the little gear icon pulls up the system settings, as well as the specific light settings for all of your bulbs. There are tons of neat features tucked away here, including an option to customize how long it takes for the light to fade between changes, and also an energy use tracker. You won’t get either of those with the Philips Hue app.

The Wiz app features a bounty of interesting features, including scenes, schedules, energy monitoring, automated vacation lighting, custom fade durations and a “Rhythm Mode” that lets you plot out a day’s worth of repeatable lighting changes.

Other features include the usual options for saving scenes and for scheduling lighting changes, as well as a “Rhythm Mode” that lets you set the lights to automatically cycle between up to five custom settings at different times of the day. The app starts you off with a circadian mode that automatically adjusts the lights between energizing cool white tones when you wake up and relaxing soft white tones in the evening, with a night light for when you’re asleep. If you’d rather build your own Rhythm that automatically triggers Party Mode whenever your work-from-home day is over, hey, more power to you.

What’s especially nice about the feature is the way Wiz visualizes it with a ring-shaped timeline. Once you plot a lighting change on it — say, lights on at 7 a.m. — it’s a cinch to slide that marker around the ring to make fine adjustments to the schedule. It’s similar to the Lifx app’s Day & Dusk feature, which plots lighting changes along a line graph. I like the Wiz approach even better.

As for integrations, the Wiz app supports Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT and a handful of other, smaller smart home platforms. The app does a great job of making it easy to connect with them — for instance, when you tap the option for adding Alexa, it’ll switch apps and send you directly to the authentication page in the Alexa app.

The big, missing integration is Apple HomeKit, but you can still use Siri to control these bulbs if you’re willing to use Apple’s Shortcuts app, which lets you trigger your apps with custom Siri commands. It’s a more limited experience than you get with HomeKit, which lets you program and control devices from various brands in Apple’s Home app, but it does the job. For example, I created a shortcut that turns any Wiz lights in my bedroom on just by saying, “Hey Siri, cue the lights.” That’s probably not enough for anyone who’s already seriously invested in Apple HomeKit, but it’s enough for the bulb to say that it supports voice controls by all three of the major voice assistants, so I’ll give it a passing grade.

I also appreciated the Wiz Connected privacy policy, which does a better job than most of explaining the company’s data practices in plain English. Per that policy, the only info Wiz collects when you use its bulbs are unique product identifiers and diagnostic information, as well as things like a Home ID and specific user preferences from using the app. Wiz also says that it does not share user data with any third parties for the purposes of targeted advertising.

Color-changing smart bulbs are futuristic and flashy, and they make the smart home fun. That’s why they’ve always been so much more expensive than white light smart bulbs — not because RGB diodes cost a fortune, but because they can have a dramatic impact on the way your home looks and feels. For years, manufacturers have translated that into markup, positioning full-color smart lighting as a luxury.

That’s all well and good for manufacturers, but look back through the last five years of smart home coverage on our site and on others, and count how many times we’ve used pictures of bedrooms and living rooms lit with fancy colors to connote the connected living space. It’s an easy visual for the fun futurism of the smart home, and it’s become one of the first things people imagine when they envision the category as a whole. As we enter the first summer of this new era of pandemics, a tenuous easing of travel restrictions has begun. This month, the countries of the European Union will reopen their internal borders, and they plan to allow travel from outside the block some time in July. Singapore and China have begun permitting essential travel between them, but only for passengers who test negative for the coronavirus, use a contact-tracing app, and don’t deviate from their itinerary. Iceland will allow tourists, but it plans to test them for the virus at the airport.

Grounded for many months, airlines are beefing up their summer schedules—though the number of flights will be a fraction of their pre-pandemic frequency. Airports are still mostly ghost towns (some have even been taken over by wildlife), and international long-distance travel is all but dead. Around the globe, the collapse of the tourist economy has bankrupted hotels, restaurants, bus operators, and car rental agencies—and thrown an estimated 100 million people out of work.

With uncertainty and fear hanging over traveling, no one knows how quickly tourism and business travel will recover, whether we will still fly as much, and what the travel experience will look like once new health security measures are in place. One thing is certain: Until then, there will be many more canceled vacations, business trips, weekend getaways, and family reunions.

To look beyond the summer and help us think about how the pandemic will permanently change the way we travel, Foreign Policy asked seven prominent experts to look into their crystal balls.

The Collapse in Travel Will Bring Long-Term Changes

by James Crabtree, associate professor in practice at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore and the author of The Billionaire Raj.

Just as mass unemployment leaves indelible scars on labor markets, so the current global travel collapse will bring long-term changes to patterns of international movement for both business and pleasure.Countries with strong pandemic records will deploy them as tourism marketing strategies: Discover Taiwan!

Airlines and hoteliers hope nascent “travel bubbles”—small groups of countries reopening borders only among themselves—and “green lanes” for pre-screened travelers, such as those with antibodies showing immunity to COVID-19, will allow a gradual re-opening. More likely is that a new system of interlocking safe zones will operate for the foreseeable future, or at least until a vaccine is widely deployed.

Travel will normalize more quickly in safe zones that coped well with COVID-19, such as between South Korea and China, or between Germany and Greece. But in poorer developing countries struggling to manage the pandemic, such as India or Indonesia, any recovery will be painfully slow.

All this will change the structure of future global travel. Many will opt not to move around at all, especially the elderly. Tourists who experiment with new locations in their safe zones or home countries will stick to new habits. Countries with strong pandemic records will deploy them as tourism marketing strategies—discover Taiwan! Much the same will be true for business, where ease of travel and a new sense of common destiny within each safe zone will restructure investment along epidemiological lines.

The Pandemic Caused Us to Fast-Forward Into the Future

I am optimistic that this will be a winning result for travelers, governments, the airline industry, and the economy.

Students took it for granted that they could aspire to an academic program in a different region, country, or continent—and still go back to visit their families. Children saw their grandparents up close. Families could gather for weddings, births, graduations, funerals. Businesspeople from remote locations went to conventions and conferences to make deals and coordinate plans. The world’s cultural and touristic attractions became open to people from all corners of the globe. For Americans, air travel and international exposure were once such rarities that the now-absurd-sounding term “jet set” actually meant something when it was coined in the 1950s. The commodification of travel allowed people of ordinary means to compose a “bucket list” of sights they wanted to see—and to assume they’d be able to.

Before the lockdown, it was easy to recite all the harm mass travel had done, from the throngs overwhelming Venice or Machu Picchu to the standardization of hotel-and-airport life worldwide. What might be lost with a long interruption in easy-connectedness is only now becoming evident.

One startling detail about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is that areas with concentrated outbreaks are called hot spots—which is exactly the same phrase the commercial travel industry has used to denote popular and fashionable destinations. This uncomfortable parallel reminds us that travel, in our globalized era, enabled the spread of the virus in a historically unprecedented way.I doubt the desire to go to so-called hot spots or top-ten-list destinations will drive the next wave of travel.

For many people, travel is synonymous with vacations—and that’s fine, but somehow I don’t see vacationers as the model for post-pandemic travel. A constant source of travel headlines in recent years has been tourist overcrowding in places such as Venice and Bali, and I doubt the desire to go to so-called hot spots or top-ten-list destinations will drive the next wave of travel. It will be the desire simply to go, and to figure things out along the journey. Think road trip or backpacking adventure, not package tour.

No doubt the new world of travel will see a boom in domestic travel. Many will go by van or recreational vehicle—and that makes sense, given that one is a lot more self-contained when one travels that way. International travel will also return—and it will be pioneered not just by savvy backpackers and independent travelers going on their own pace and seeing how the journey plays out, but also by working-class folks around the world seeking out family back home, whether that’s in Nigeria, Ecuador, or Poland.

We Will Keep Traveling Because Curiosity Cannot Be Expunged

To some extent, we have to. I was obliged to take three flights in the middle of the pandemic, from Osaka to Santa Barbara, where my 88 year-old mother had just emerged from hospital. A few weeks earlier, I had to fly from Japan to California—for a day—for a public event to which I had long been contractually committed.

It would be a blessing for the environment if we all traveled less. And anxiety about travel will be greater next season, and prices higher.

But globalism, having spread from person to person for so long, cannot be reversed.

Cultural curiosity cannot be expunged. My trips to North Korea have shown me what happens when people cannot get to see the world first-hand.

Home smart home: India's booming home automation market

As a habit, Tom Joseph, 50, bathes twice a day. This routine makes him reach for the geyser switch at least four times daily. A couple of months ago, Joseph bought a smart plug and his life changed. Today, he doesn’t have to bother about switching the machine on or off. It is programmed to function for an hour at 7:00 am and then at 7:00 pm. The smart plug also responds to voice commands. So Joseph, based in the National Capital Region, gets hot water whenever he asks for it.

Impressed by the technology, Joseph has now retrofitted his old air conditioner and TV to make them smart. He now uses a voice-enabled remote to control all these equipment, instead of depending on manually operated remote controls for each.

“When I return home in the evening, it is like the devices know what I want — the air conditioner and TV start even before I get a snack from the kitchen to settle down and relax,” says Joseph, president of Tuya Smart India, an internet of things (IoT) startup.

He is excited about getting rid of mundane tasks. “We no longer call it the future. Smart is current.”

Next on his list are smart curtains and locks.

Across households in India, people like Joseph are making a quiet shift to smart equipment as they look for more gear that can take care of routine tasks — operating lights, fans, air conditioners, heaters, air purifiers, door locks, cameras and more.

The smart home market comprises of networked devices and related services that enable automation. It could be a camera that monitors the house or a ceiling fan that increase or decreases speed sensing the comfort of the occupants of the room.

At present, a smart home is about connected things. Devices, each with a unique IP address, are connected directly or indirectly to the home WiFi making it easy to control them. These devices can also monitor certain aspects of a user’s life. Software tracks a person’s habits, like the music they like in the morning and play that, smart mattresses adjust to a person’s back, smart mirrors point out health issues, sensors in toilets check for potential health issues by scanning waste before flushing.

Sumit Padmakar Joshi, vice-chairman & MD of Signify Innovations India (formerly Philips Lighting India), says, “From being a concept, the word smart has gradually evolved. Consumers now have access to intuitive technologies and virtual assistants which can remind them about daily chores, plan their day and operate their appliances.”

Companies are responding to this demand by flooding the market with smart devices capable of responding to voice and the ambience. According to market research firm IDC, 753,000 smart speakers were shipped to the Indian market in 2018. In 2019, this is expected to reach around 1 million.

Boom in Business The Indian smart home market is expected to be around $6 billion by 2022, a two-fold increase from $3 billion estimated in 2020, according to Statista. Globally, that number is expected to reach $53.45 billion by 2022.

Panasonic, for example, launched an all-smart range of appliances last month.

Manish Sharma, president & CEO of Panasonic India & South Asia, says, “Machines equipped with sensors will be able to comprehend whether an activity in a room is normal or if there is discomfort for the occupants. That is intelligence.” These appliances will create value for consumers, he says.

Customers can operate the devices from anywhere and know how much power an appliance consumes.

The technology also does self-diagnosis.

Let us say an air conditioner is drawing more electricity because of a choked filter. A sensor will send an alert to a technician to come and fix it.

Then comes personalisation — depending on the temperature, an air conditioner automatically adjusts its settings. Smart devices will also call customer care automatically when it is time for service. This almost lifelike behaviour in machines can also help a user secure his home better. A smart doorbell, for example, can send an image of a person outside the door to your smartphone.

You can remotely talk to the visitor and even open a digital lock via the app.

While smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home made users familiar with the concept of using voice commands to stream music and news, it is now light bulbs to curtains that are getting a smart makeover.

Sanjay Gupta, senior VP and business head of consumer lighting at Wipro, reckons that up to 2 million homes in India have at least a smart bulb that can be switched on or off and can adjust the brightness on a voice command.

This shift to smart homes with intelligence in-built in appliances is accelerating.

Google works with 3,500 brands that have 30,000 smart products in the market.

Wipro Lighting gets 3% of its business from smart bulbs in 2019-20 and expects to get 15% by FY22. Delhi-based startup Oakter, which makes smart devices, plans to launch a new smart home product every six months. Philips Smart Lighting has products that can be controlled via a mobile app or voice assistants such as Alexa and Siri. This proliferation in smart devices has led to a surge in data, too. IoT startup Tuya Smart, which processes 40 million voice commands every day globally, in January launched its cloud server in Mumbai to store data from smart home devices.

The starting point to make a home smart could be an appropriate light bulb or speaker.

Surabh Arya, business lead-homes and Nest products, Google, says, “Step one to building a smart house is ensuring connectivity.

After that, it is installing connected devices. If those two conditions are met, it is technically a smart home.”

For Joseph, it was a geyser.

For Shishir Gupta, cofounder & CEO of Oakter, it was a smart lock that he himself made. Cofounded by three IITians, Oakter has three smart home products — a water level meter for overhead tanks, a universal voice-enabled remote and a smart plug.

IDC India says there are four broad uses of smart home devices: entertainment and video, lighting, surveillance and appliances. The first category is the most popular with smart TVs and streaming videos. According to IDC, 60% of the premium TVs sold last year were smart.

Jaipal Singh, lead analyst for smart home and wearables, IDC India, says, “Alexa, Google Home sharpened the users’ focus towards exploring more use cases on voice commands. Music and entertainment remain the top use case in smart homes.”

Use cases could expand as consumers now want their homes to give the same experience they get in a connected car. And domestic manufacturers are also warming up to the idea.

Hero Electronix, which makes digital set-top boxes, started producing smart home products under the brand Qubo in September.

“Demand for home automation solutions is on the rise due to use cases around connectivity, security and entertainment,” says Nikhil Rajpal, CEO, Hero Electronix.

There is demand from tier-2 cities also.

Qubo has six smart products with built-in Alexa — including cameras, smoke & gas sensors and smart plugs.

“We solve practical use cases.

For example, using cameras and voice recognition, parents can get to know when their children returned from school and they can even talk to them from remote locations,” Rajpal adds.

Such systems will work well only if there is seamlessly internet connectivity. As network systems improve with 5G and other such technology, smart homes will see wider and better acceptance.

“5G will accelerate growth of smart homes,” says Anku Jain, managing director of MediaTek India, “as connectivity will be better, lag will be less and capacity will be higher.” A third of chip-maker MediaTek’s business comes from smart homes applications.

Part of the reason for the swift shift to smart devices now is due to the ease with which it can be done and the pace of roll-out of technology.

For instance, Alexa was launched in the US just five years ago and India was the fourth country to have the smart speaker. “There has been a 5X increase in Alexa-enabled smart home users in 2019,” says Puneesh Kumar, country manager for Alexa experience & devices, Amazon India. “The selection of smart home devices has also increased 30X.”

Early adopters struggled to make their geysers, microwaves and bulbs smart. It was a 12-15 step process, with a separate app for each appliance. Now it is a single-step process, thanks to industry aligning to certain standards such as ZigBee and original equipment makers working with companies that make smart speakers. Even if users have products from multiple vendors — like Voltas, Havells, Usha, Philips, Sony, Xiaomi, Syska, Wipro — smart speakers will be able to discover and help control all of these from one device. Panasonic users, for example, can now either use the company’s app to control things or sync with Alexa or Google Home. A user can ask Alexa to “discover my devices” and all devices that can be connected will show up on the app. The same can be done on Google Nest, a smart home platform.

Kumar adds, “It is going beyond luxury to convenience and that is the biggest factor why people are switching to smart devices.

It is also great for differently-abled people as they can control devices without having to move.”

The devices are also getting better and more powerful so routine tasks, like switching on the geyser at a particular time, become hassle-free. Smart speakers like Nest Hub and Alexa help users streamline multiple tasks with a single voice command — a command like “Ok Google, I’m home” can turn on lights or set off scheduled reminders related to a dinner date, a birthday party or bill payments.

Google Nest products like the Mini have dedicated machine learning chips and a processing capability of one TeraOps (one trillion calculations per second). Such computing capability makes the machine translate and act on a simple command in either Hindi or English without lag.

No longer will a family on vacation have to worry if they have left the geyser on or if the front door was locked. They can check from anywhere in the world using a smartphone.

All this comfort comes at a cost that can look like a luxury when compared with regular devices and appliances.

When smart bulbs were first launched about 16 months ago, they cost as high as Rs 2,400. A year ago, the price of a 7-watt bulb dropped to Rs 1,200. But that is still six times more than a similar wattage LED light. Smart doorbells cost Rs 4,000-7,000, while a regular one can start from Rs 50. Smart locks can leave you poorer by around Rs 25,000 against a regular one that cost Rs 500. But the advantages are manifold.

Godrej, for example, has the Advantis range of locks that start at Rs 25,000 and come with fingerprint sensors, can store four unique passwords and ring an alarm on sensing a fire.

Overall costs of smart home products could come down as volumes rise and a local ecosystem develops.

Sushant Bhargava, assistant general manager, Godrej Security Solutions, says, “Lockers have moved from keys to digital PINs to biometrics and, now, operate in a connected world.

In the latest range of lockers if someone tries to break in, it sets off an alarm and sends a text message or an automated call to the owner.”

For security reasons, locks are standalone units and cannot be activated via smart speakers. “At present, we do not see a use case for such devices,” he added.

A customer can start building a smart home for as little as Rs 10,000 and later add more devices that could cost up to Rs 1 lakh, depending on usage. Companies are also offering freebies to spread their reach. For example, customers buying Alexa smart speakers were given a free Wipro smart bulb around last Diwali. This helped Wipro sell more smart lights.

Gupta of Wipro says, “Despite the high cost, buyer response online was better than expected. Around last Diwali, prices dropped to Rs 500 (from Rs 1,200). As prices fall more, smart lighting will take off.” By Diwali 2020, Wipro will push smart products offline as well. The company is also evaluating new products, including geyser sockets, phone chargers, curtain controllers and motion sensors.

The price will come down as volumes go up, says Panasonic’s Sharma, much like it happened with smartphones.

Be Smart, Be Safe A smart device has to listen, translate and then execute a command as simple as “dim the lights”. Companies insist that devices start recording only after the prompt word is uttered — this could be “Ok Google”, “Alexa” or “computer”, among others.

But are the devices listening to more than what they are supposed to? Also, if you order a book via a smart speaker such as Amazon Echo, what if the order command (and other conversations) lands on the wrong cloud? You might feel secure that cameras installed outside the house are scanning all activities and sending alerts on your smartphone. But what if the system is hacked and a thief gets to see the images to figure out the right time to strike?

“For a device to know what to do, it has to transcribe, translate every word a user utters,” says Saket Modi, cofounder & CEO, Lucideus, a Palo Alto-headquartered cyber risk quantification platform company with clients such as NPCI, ICICI Bank and Delhi Airport. “That is fundamentally the cost of convenience.”

Voice is the primary source of interaction for smart devices that can make life more convenient by taking care of routine tasks. As the use of such devices increases, so is the amount of data that is being shared by connected/IoT devices.

In fact, users aren’t always aware about the amount of data that is being collected and where and how it is being stored. Pramod Sudhindra, partner-advisory services, EY India, says, “It is fine to use smart devices if you are okay sharing some of the data with a cyber farm somewhere.

Otherwise, there is no price you can put on security. At least make sure you buy hardware from reputed makers.”

Anti-virus software did a good job of securing systems when desktops and laptops were the only source of digital footprints. But now that print can be picked from air purifiers, washing machines, microwaves, fans, bulbs and so on. A smart speaker is constantly listening to all conversations happening in the room. Moreover, these devices get better as they listen and learn more about a user looking for smart solutions.

“Anything that multiplies conveniences multiplies threats as well,” says Modi. There is a lot that needs to be done at the WiFi router level to make smart homes secure. A smart way to ensure security is “a combination of technology, control and awareness,” adds Modi.

In an article in Time.com, David Cooley, chief strategy officer at Silicon Labs, says any breach could be catastrophic for the industry. “I call it a mass-extinction event for the Internet of Things.” The rapidly expanding industry faces this onerous task of ensuring smart is safe.

Shortly thereafter, then-vice president Dick Cheney's medical team disabled the wireless feature on his pacemaker, fearing that the television program would inspire a terrorist to take similar action. Pacemakers and cybersecurity soon dropped from the news, but they came back again just four years later.

The Pacemaker Recall

In August of 2017, the Food and Drug Administration publicized a recall of 465,000 radiofrequency-enabled implantable pacemakers after a review identified security vulnerabilities. The FDA found that a hacker could use equipment at distributed on the commercial market to gain access to the device. With this access, a hacker could change the device's programming and harm the patient by depleting the battery or order dangerous pacing.

Fortunately, the FDA recall and development of firmware update occurred before any malicious access could occur.

In 2016 in the UK, the media reported a security vulnerability in the Owlet infant heart monitor sensor. Cybersecurity researchers found that while data sent between parent smartphones and base servers was secure, the networking between the sensor and the base server had no encryption whatsoever and could be accessed without so much as a login.

That means that anyone within range could monitor the infant's data, interfere with alert systems, or otherwise interfere with monitoring. The media deemed the situation to be the year's worst IoT security risk.

Insulin Delivery Made Vulnerable

All of those IoMT enabled glucose monitors? Those are vulnerable to hackers too. In 2011, a security researcher who is also a diabetic conducted an independent investigation. He found that a hacker could intercept the signals from a glucose monitor and change the readout, which would likely cause the wearer to adjust the dosage. If the attacker repeated the process, it could prove fatal. More frighteningly, this could happen from up to half a mile's distance.

Hackable Medication Pumps

Research has also identified vulnerabilities in a particular brand of infusion pump, a type of technology that delivers medication into patients' bloodstreams. In 2014, an independent professional reported that he had written a program that could instruct pumps to deliver lethal doses of medicine. The researcher found these vulnerabilities in at least five pump models.

Whole Systems at Risk

IoMT devices also put the hospital at risk of what is known as a backdoor attack. In one well-publicized example, hackers used malware to infect blood gas analyzers, which are important for the monitoring of critical care and surgical patients. The infected devices allowed attackers to infiltrate hospital networks and extract confidential data, which was then sent to an undisclosed European location.

A simulation of the attack revealed that the blood gas analyzers were routinely sending unencrypted data. That meant that the hackers could make any changes that they wished within the hospital system - to patient data, to treatment and diagnostic requests, and even to key administrative information.

Identifying Key Vulnerabilities

The IoMT would be a vulnerable situation even with adequate safeguards in place, simply because it sends and receives extremely personal information. Unfortunately, most of today's systems are not set up to protect such private data.

Outdated Software

Some working medical devices, such as CT scanners and even pacemakers, are upwards of 20 years old. These devices are capable of connecting to hospital systems but feature software systems that have not been conscientiously updated. Such systems are not set up to defend against today's advanced threats, which can disable an entire hospital network through a single device.

Departments Working in Isolation

In order for medical devices to be truly secure, all stakeholders must participate in screening for and responding to threats. This can be a difficult task in a complex healthcare organization where the primary focus is typically the immediate health of the patient. The clinicians who use these devices often have so many pressing patient care tasks that they can easily overlook cybersecurity updates Meanwhile, facility IT staff and device manufacturers become involved with their own team's tasks.

This isolated way of working does not stand up to the complex and interlocking demands of medical device cybersecurity. In order to defend systems and devices from intruders, stakeholders must come together to create a unified security strategy.

Unclear Regulations and Poor Compliance

Manufacturers and healthcare delivery organizations (HDOs) have traditionally lacked clear mandates regarding the security of medical devices. A 2017 survey revealed that just 44 percent of HDOs and 51 percent of device manufacturers followed FDA guidelines to make devices more secure, despite the fact that approximately 33 percent of both groups were aware of potential harm to patients if a security breach did occur.

Improving Security and Protecting Patients

In one of the first major steps toward improved monitoring of cybersecurity, the FDA recognized the UL 2900 standard for medical device cybersecurity in August of 2017. Officially published as UL 2900-1, the standard offers a series of checks designed to identify vulnerabilities.

By recognizing the standard, the FDA enables manufacturers to indicate UL 2900-1 compliance as a response to cybersecurity concerns.

Regulatory Updates

In late 2018, the FDA published draft guidelines that bring medical device cybersecurity requirements up to date with today's risk set. Changes include:

A two-tier risk assessment system that prioritizes devices with the ability to connect with other products, a network, or the Web

Mandated documentation specific to a device's or system's risk tier

A Cybersecurity Bill of Materials (CBOM) that lists software and hardware with potential vulnerability to hackers

Greater alignment with the National Institute of Standards Technology's globally acknowledged Cybersecurity Framework

The FDA hopes that aligning with the Framework will improve UL 2009-1 compliance.

Recommendations, Not Mandates

The released documentation is geared toward premarket submissions and “contains nonbinding recommendations.” It is yet to be seen whether these recommendations are compelling enough to increase the percentage of manufacturers and HDOs that are actively trying to prevent attacks, a percentage most recently measured at 17 percent and 15 percent respectively.

Recommendations for HDOs

In 2018, the FDA collaborated with government research contractor MITRE Corp. to develop a cybersecurity guide for medical devices. The guide provides recommendations for healthcare providers and other involved organizations to prevent and respond to cybersecurity incidents involving medical devices. It features such recommendations as:

Creating a threat detection standard for all of an enterprise's devices and networks

Investment in firewalls and other prevention technologies

Inventorying of an enterprise's full range of medical devices, with attention to those with connectivity capabilities

The latter plays a particularly important role in uncovering security vulnerabilities. Only by identifying areas of potential risk can a provider screen for and correct vulnerabilities.

Next Steps for Attack Prevention

Technology never stays still and neither do hackers. The new developments in protecting patient data and patients themselves will not be the end of healthcare cybersecurity, nor will they guard against every possible way of hacking IoMT devices.

It is vitally important for all HDO's to develop and implement medical device security and IoMT security strategies. These strategies need to include not only a screening and threat mitigation standard for current devices but also a plan for maintaining security on a continuing basis.

Simplify Clinician Processes

Clinicians, both doctors and nurses, have their hands full with patient care. Any cybersecurity tasks, such as authentication checks, must be minimal on their part and automated as much as possible. Software updating and other processes must not disrupt workflow.

Threat Mitigation Training

The concept of keeping the clinician involved but uninterrupted also applies to threat intervention strategies. All personnel involved with a device or network must know what to do if a data compromise occurs.

Network Segmentation

Many security experts are now advocating for increased segmentation of enterprise systems. By segmenting their networks, organizations can more effectively implement security checks and isolate any threats before they pose a widespread risk.

Encryption of Patient Information

Because IoMT devices expose more patient information to enterprise networks, it is important for electronic health records (EHRs) to be as secure as possible. Technology such as homomorphic encryption, which secures data even as it is being used, can keep patient information safe from unwanted access. Protection can even be applied to personally identifiable information (PII), which is particularly valuable to cybercriminals.

Investing in Prevention

The sophisticated entry system is especially helpful when the owners are throwing a party. They always know who has arrived, when, and at which door they are standing. And, if it’s dark enough outside — the Elan system knows through its built-in astronomical time clock — it will kick start the party with an elaborate display of colored landscape lighting. Your Tech of Naples divided the lights into four independent zones, so while one group of lights emits a red hue, another group can glow in a cool blue color, and so on.

Should anyone venture inside — and why not when there’s killer home theater — the owners never need to worry about switching on the lights. Sensors built into the doors trip on the respective room lights. Once people are inside, they can use the specially programmed keypads mounted near the threshold of each room to engage a particular “entertainment” scene. With just a few taps the owners or their guests can set the lights and cue the music for that particular space.

The keypads offer a quick-and-easy way to play music, but for more precise control, the owners access the Elan app on their smartphones or tablets. Here, they can choose a certain playlist, music service, or song to stream to speakers in a particular area or throughout the entire house. As many as five independent streams of audio can be delivered simultaneously to different listening zones from Fusion Research media server.

There’s no place on the property that’s untouched by music, as Your Tech blanketed the house and yard with a combination of built-in architectural speakers from Niles, and outdoor rock speakers from Bose and landscape speakers from Sonance.

Video is just as impressive as the audio. Although the home has a modest number of TVs — four — their impact on the house is huge. At least that’s the case for two of the four displays. The transformation from family room to theater happens in seconds after the owners press a button on an Elan HR2 remote. This command lowers the screen, revs up the Acer video projector, and activates the Dolby Atmos Yamaha receiver. The receiver feeds audio to an ultra slim Definitive Technology soundbar, which as 13 speakers built in. Sound also flows to eight additional Definitive Technology speakers and two subwoofers.

The home theater as well as the other TV-equipped areas in the house all have access to Apple TV. To streamline the search process, You Tech created a button on the Elan app and handheld remote that takes the owners instantly to Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, and other favorite services.

Your Tech didn’t stop there. The owners can use a 26-letter keypad on the touchscreens when using Comcast to facilitate faster searches for specific programs. The home theater offers an incredible entertainment experience at a moment’s notice to anyone in the home. Private viewing, however, takes place in the master suite. Here, per the owners’ request, Your Tech mounted a 65-inch curved Samsung TV directly on the ceiling above the bed.

With so much happening in and around the house, the owners rely on the Elan system to keep them on track with daily duties. Your Tech of Naples configured the system to broadcast over the home’s speakers various notifications and announcement throughout the day. They might be reminded to “take out the trash” or informed that the “indoor temperature is currently 70 degrees.”

The system even lightens the mood by telling an occasion joke. These announcements were initially set up by Your Tech, but the owners can use Your Tech’s website at any time to add, modify, and schedule any proclamations they desire.

Once in the system, these settings, like everything else managed by the Elan system happen so organically and automatically, it’s as if a personal butler is overseeing the household, even telling jokes when the owners least expect it.
