What appears simple is not always so. What we think will happen isn’t always what happens. Flexibility is in the mind, in how we respond to situations as much if not more than flexibility is in the body. If the mind is stiff, what does it matter if the body bends? Resilience is the ability to recover from difficulty quickly, like grace and grit. We practice resilience each time we face a challenge in our practice and train our response to that challenge to be equanimous and calm. Soak up every ray of sun ☀️ The light is precious and sunbeams speak of joy and happiness. Before spending time in Northern Europe I used to take the sun for granted. In fact, I used to seek out the shade (and I still do in Miami in the summer). But in September in the north every sunny day is a gift to be cherished. I love that I learned to be thankful for the sun. And just like that, if we can learn to change our perspective a little we can learn to appreciate something that we have taken for granted our entire lives. Not every day will be your deepest. Remain curious and open to change. Accept the days that just don’t offer up the path to what’s expected. Then, in the space of the unexpected you might be surprised what appears. If we always get what we want, we might never get to explore what lies outside the boundaries of what we already know. The miraculous is always something unexpected, something that shifts our perspective. And it’s rarely what we think it is or will be. Keep an open mind. #throwbackthursday If you look in the background you’ll the Swedish flag. Tomorrow I am on the way to Stockholm tomorrow where I have been teaching since before there was Instagram. Yes, I realize that makes me sound like a dinosaur (dinosaurs are actually very cool!). Yoga existed long before cool sun sent handstand pictures like this one made it popular. Teachers of yoga hold space for their community to practice. When I started traveling to different cities to share my teaching I was (and still am) humbled by the hard work and dedication each yoga studio owner makes to keep the flame of yoga burning brightly. The torch of yoga is maintained by every student who gets on the mat to practice and every teacher who continues to share what they have learned. In this way, the tradition continues. If nothing feels right, don’t push. Wait for the feeling that pulls forward and follow the flow. Sometimes the universe asks us to go through a period of settling and integration before opening a big brand new door. If we bust through process too quickly it’s like cracking open the chrysalis before the metamorphosis has occurred. Learn to force things less and allow things more. Flexibility has never been about just twisting and bending, flexibility has always been a state of mind. There is always a path to peace. If you haven’t found it yet, consider changing the parameters of the path or the guardrails set around the course of action. We will find our way with a combination of resilience, compromise, integrity and compassion. The skills we learn in the practice are the skills we apply to live a more peaceful life. Before I did yoga, I never used to understand why people described me as smiley and happy. Maybe I was smiling then, but I never really felt happy. It is the practice that opened the door to healing, forgiveness and acceptance. Now, when people say I’m smiley and happy, I feel it too.
