Post-Harvest Loss in Nigeria; the Effect of Climatic Change.
Post-Harvest Loss in Nigeria; the Effect of Climatic Change.
Post-harvest loss, which is exacerbated by climate change, contributes to food insecurity and reduces the income of smallholder farmers and processors. We talked to Olorunfemi Oloruntoyin, YieldWise senior program manager in Nigeria, to hear about the challenges these farmers are facing as they adapt to a changing climate.
Global food loss and waste cause more greenhouse gas emissions than anyâŚ

How Instagram Convinces Us To Eat Terrible
After months of hard work, redesigns, and I didn't think that would take that longsâ; Space Food Truck is coming to Steam Early Access on November 24th! Depending on who you ask - the powdered drink mix known as Soylent is either tolerableâ or totally gross.â The name alone suggests a cult classic reference to feeding dead humans to the population. As for that cloud, Samsung calls it SAMI and aims to let people use it as a place to control and grant access to their data from a variety of sensors â and possibly even medical records. Backers who donated $11.85 will receive 20g of FoPo Food Powder in October 2015. The researchers also found that moderate CR is quite effective, but more severe reductions of food intake were not beneficial to the monkeys' health (in CR studies, 20 percent is considered mild, 30 percent is moderate, and 50 percent is severe). Free Spanish Tutor: Free - 24/7 Tutor Spanish goes beyond the simple talking phrasebook or flashcard programs, providing a set of engaging, interactive study tools that help you really learn the language. You'll also appreciate the four seasonal options (off, base, build, and peak) that help you all year round. Using the Beltsville facilities, for instance, Baer and his colleagues found that our bodies sometimes extract fewer calories than the number listed on the label. The portal is an important source of information for SNAP and WIC stakeholders and beneficiaries, facilitates discussion for the continued improvement of the programs, and provides recommendations for policymakers, businesses, and public health professionals to improve nutrition and reduce obesity among SNAP and WIC recipients. The control prompt to the boy's climbing action was wrong, meaning I couldn't climb up onto a shelf to get a barrel of food for my feathery friend. Further, there is not a single medical school in the country that teaches nutrition as a basic medical science. Google keeps adding new information to its Knowledge Graph, and today it is bringing nutrition info to its search results pages. And even if http://sichernsiedieschonheit.info could do it I'm not sure I'd be better off nutrition wise due to lack of discipline. i thought about this can rig up simple connections between applications such as Facebook, Dropbox, Instagram, and Twitter, to help perform certain automatic actions (e.g. sharing every photo you post to Instagram on Twitter). Also, despite its name, Fast Food Calorie Counter doesn't do any counting for you. The introduction of the Food Labeling Date Act in Congress and the Rockefeller Foundation's $130 million YieldWise initiative are just two major actions to tackle the issue of food waste this past year. Higher earners also tend to be more likely than lower earners to ask for raises in the first place. However, the coming food bubble may be more difficult to anticipate than others due to several obfuscating details. The Ask iPhone app, however, will become more interesting with its second release, which will include a feature called Nearby Answers.â Based on your location, it will show you a list of places nearby.
Nutrino starts from the premise that, rather than taking a one-size-fits-allâ approach, nutrition should be personal to each individual. Despite the initial failed foray into food product development, Massa said the company is doing well in its new niche. I'd walk around the house with MagicPlan, while she went with a tape measure and a pad of paper. On the delivery side, the person in charge of the shift can figure out who is available to facilitate the delivery. By far the biggest sources of Omega-6 in the modern diet are processed seed and vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower oils. I created a list just for my Christmas dinner, and every time I found a recipe I wanted to use on the big day, I'd add it to the list. Ovuline , for example, similarly takes a big data approach to conception and earlier this year announced integrations with Fitbit and Withings fitness-tracking devices. Once the tool has identified a bug, it'll give the developer access to test cases to help reproduce the issue. It's then down to the user to remember to check in regularly with the app (although push notifications do help) with the ability to track nutrition on a daily basis as well as what exercise has been conducted. And as of last month they accept Bitcoin as payment, automatically paying restaurants and delivery services in dollars at the current exchange rate. There is a compatible app that keeps track of and displays the nutritional content.
This is another calorie counter app, but with the name to back it up. Unlike a lot of the other apps out there with food databases that range to around 10,000 items, this app has 625,000 items in their database that you can search from and enter into your logging system. Hotels can fill up fast if the festival brings in a lot of visitors, so if you find yourself stuck in a city with no place to sleep, Airbnb (free; iOS and Android ) can help you out. Foodily also breaks it down by calories per gram, but I'm not measuring my food that way, either. Even when you log in with the new user's Apple ID in the Mac App Store, you're still prompted for updates or downloads using the old user's login identity. Web gloves can help you boost your combo by letting you smash things that you normally can't and should take priority in upgrading. Curates meals from the best food trucks, chefs and restaurants, and delivers them to your office, making team meals delicious and effortless. I want to clarify that I did not ask for anyone to resign if they voted for Trump.

New Research Highlights Potential Vulnerabilities of Urban Food Systems to Natural Disasters
The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) today released new research in a report titled, The Resilience of Americaâs Food Systems: Evidence from Five Cities. Supported by a grant from The Rockefeller Foundation, the study finds that natural disasters could create extended food supply disruptions in U.S. cities, especially in neighborhoods with limited food retail options and food insecure populations.
The main findings of the report are informed by a comprehensive analysis of food systems in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and New York City using a seminal framework developed by ICIC. The report also highlights Madison, Wisconsin as a city that should be recognized for the resilience of its food system, and Portland, Maine is presented as a case study for the economic resilience of food-based economies.
The report also finds that by diverting edible food from landfills to food banks, food waste reduction initiatives may play an important role in food system resilience planning by increasing the availability of meals for the food insecure. The Rockefeller Foundation is already working globally through its YieldWise initiative to demonstrate how food waste and loss can be cut in half over the next five years.
âWe hope ICICâs groundbreaking research on urban food systems will compel city leaders to prioritize food systems in discussions and planning around urban resilience,â said Ryan Whalen, Director, Initiatives and Strategy at The Rockefeller Foundation. The Rockefeller Foundation pioneered 100 Resilient Cities (100RC), which helps cities around the world become more resilient to the physical, social, and economic challenges that are a growing part of the 21st century. 100RC views resilience not just as shocksâearthquakes, fires, floods, etc.âbut also as stresses that weaken the fabric of a city on a day-to-day or cyclical basis.
âIn response to recent natural disasters, cities are increasingly prioritizing resilience planning, but food systems have been largely overlooked,â said Kimberly Zeuli, ICICâs Director of Research and lead author of the report. To aid city leaders in the strengthening of urban food system resilience, the report concludes by offering five recommendations that serve as a playbook. âA food system perspective in resilience planning and the strategies we have identified can ensure that food systems return to normal operations as quickly as possible after a disaster,â Zeuli said. The full report can be downloaded on ICIC's website.

Major Stakeholders Co-Create Unifying Strategy to Address Post-Harvest Loss in Nigeria
Major stakeholders in the Nigerian tomato value chain came together from across the globe for the first-ever YieldWise Partner Planning Session last month. YieldWise, a $130 million dollar initiative launched in 2016 by The Rockefeller Foundation, seeks to demonstrate how the world can halve food loss by 2030, one of the UNâs Global Goals.
The 22 partners in attendance included international and Nigerian non-government organizations, government representatives from Kano and neighboring states, input providers, agro-technology manufacturers, domestic processors and other large-scale tomato buyers. PYXERA Global, implementing partner of the $6 million dollar YieldWise initiative in Kano, Nigeria facilitated this convening so that all of the major players in the tomato value chain could discuss and align individual program and business plans to develop a single overarching strategy to address post-harvest loss in northern Nigeria.
âCollectively, these organizations are investing millions of dollars each year in the tomato value chain in Nigeria, and this session provided a platform for them to align those resources to maximize impact,â said Maggie DeLorme, Senior Program Manager at PYXERA Global who led the session. âThis is the first time all of these stakeholders have been around the same table at the same time. The fact that 22 different organizations and companies from across sectors attended this session is a testament to how serious of an issue post-harvest loss for tomatoes is in this region, and to the tangibility of the solutions at-hand.â
There are three YieldWise post-harvest loss pilots in Sub-Saharan Africa, and PYXERA Global implements the initiative in Nigeria focusing specifically on loss along the tomato value chain. The initiative targets major contributors to loss in the areas of farmer aggregation and training, market linkages, access to finance, access to post-harvest loss mitigating technologies, and the enabling environment.
âWe also encouraged attendees to put aside competitive differences and aim for collaboration and sustained conversation in order to continue to get the most impact from collective efforts,â said Adam Suleiman, Project Director for PYXERA Global in Kano. âThe session focused on ensuring efforts were not being duplicated or undermined by organizations working within the tomato value chain, while supporting the achievement of individual organizational targets and objectives.â
The session enabled attendees to share work plans, specific activity targets and approaches, and discuss opportunities and challenges associated with implementation in an open and collaborative way. While not all attendees are direct partners of the YieldWise initiative, they are all engaged in activities aimed at reducing post-harvest loss in the region and with the goal of strengthening and diversifying the tomato value chain. Following this first session, attendees will be participating in quarterly working group meetings to continue the spirit of collaboration and collective impact.
PYXERA Global is continuing the post-harvest loss discussion at its Global Engagement Forum: Live on April 4 and 5 in Washington, D.C. This interactive forum will bring together leaders, innovators, and resources to collaborate on three solvable problems: post-harvest loss, preventable diseases, and youth employability.
