Written for Pridecember22 Day 2 – Medieval

Okay so I had this idea in my head for four years now and I cannot believe it is finally out! I was in Scotland, visiting all those beautiful, medieval castles when inspiration suddenly hit me, but until now this only existed in my head. So thanks so much for this prompt! I had a blast writing this XD

Also I told @siosiri​ all about the beautiful castles and spiral staircases way back in 2018 (time does go by, huh) and she was immediately on board and even drew a little sketch. This was what really gave me the inspiration for this. I’ve attached the sketch with her permission :) Thank you so much, my dear!

Summary:

During the feast to celebrate the end of the war, crown prince Atem sneaks off to find a quiet moment to reflect on his actions in the final battle and to hide from the person that saved his life. Of course, his cousin finds him anyway and has a few things of his own to say about the prince’s behavior.

“That’s not very compliant to the rules.” He interjected and watched entranced as Seto threw his head back and laughed.

“I don’t give a fig about rules.”

“Yes.” Atem smiled a little. “I know that. It’s just that I…” he started, then stopped because he didn’t know how to address this, how to ask Seto that one question that had been plaguing him ever since that fateful battle.

He looked down at his feet, needing to get away from this piercing stare while trying to find the right words. But of course Seto wouldn’t let him.

“Yes?” He said, the familiar challenge in his voice sounding a little demanding than usual and Atem took a deep breath.

„I don’t… I don’t really understand you.“ He started and it was obviously the wrong this to say, because Seto just huffed in disdain, crossed his arms in front of his chest and glared at him in that particular way of his.

„Oh, don’t worry. You’d be the first if you did.“

„But I want to. I want to so much and yet I…“ he stopped, clicking his mouth shut. What was he saying? What were they even talking about? And why were his ears suddenly buzzing so loudly?

He only caught some rustling and looked up in time to see Seto taking a step towards him. On instinct Atem took a step up. He needed the space between them to think.

Seto stopped but his eyes bore into Atem’s chest so hard, he could almost physically feel it.

“Go on.”

Atem swallowed. “Why did you do it?”

“Do what?”

Again, Atem swallowed. He had to ask, he had to know because he’d been replaying it in his mind over and over and it just didn’t make any sense. “Stop me. On the battlefield.”

PROMPT 12: City Lights

Summary: Atem needs to get away. Seto knows exactly where to go

Quietness.

The world had changed since the last time Atem was alive, and considerably louder. The sights, sounds, and even the people, sometimes became too much for him. Every sound scratched at his brain, the constant wave of ups and down in volumes and eventually even his friends’ presence caused irritation. He would snap and huff, wanting to tear his very skin off because everything became itchy. One time he even snapped at Seto so badly he felt tears start running down his face. It only took one time for his boyfriend to understand what was going on.

In which poor Isono has rather embarrassing conversations, first with his boss and then a few months later also with his boss’ new boyfriend.

Honestly, he doesn’t get paid enough for any of this.

“Are you going to lecture me about how I should not risk my life like that? You wouldn’t be the first today, so better make it worth my while.” Isono’s eye twitched. Usually he would be quiet, let him vent and nod from time to time, but Mokuba-sama had looked so scared, that for once Isono was on his vice-president’s side entirely. If Seto-sama wanted a lecture, he would give him one. “Mokuba-sama has every right to be worried about you. But you don’t need him or me to tell you how reckless you actions today were. You know that yourself. What I find so… shocking about it all is that you knew and you did it anyway.” Seto-sama harrumphed and it made Isono even angrier. “You should take better care of me then. Or what do I pay you for?”

“You pay me for being your head of security and not for being your watchdog.” He said, clenching his fists in his lap and trying not to think that he honestly wasn’t paid nearly enough for any of this. “I am to protect you from any outward threats but I refuse to be held responsible for the things you do to yourself. If you let me, I can and will take care of you. As your confidant. But I am not your brother. Or the…” he hesitated for a moment because he felt like he’d already spoken out of tone but then again, they had told him Seto-sama was actually high so the chances of him not remembering any of this were rather good and he finally decided to say it anyway. “The friend, that you’re so desperately chasing after.”

A look crossed his boss’ face then, a look Isono had never, in all the years he’d worked for him, seen on his face before.

A look of uncertainty.

“Friend, huh.” He murmured as he turned his head away from him. Even his voice had lost its usual edge. He almost sounded wistful. “I wonder…”

Isono frowned. They had been friends, no? Why did Seto-sama doubt it all of a sudden?

He wanted to ask him but Seto-sama looked up at the ceiling like it held all the answers in the universe, like he was trying to see something, he could not yet comprehend. And when he spoke again, his voice was very quiet.

“Do you think I’m a good man, Isono? Deserving of friendship and… kindness?”

Isono blinked. So, that was what the doctor had meant with sentimental.
