"Sorry, sir."

Snape has proven himself to be quite trainable as a fag -- he learns quickly and is quite clever.

Too clever for his own good, sometimes, considering he set fire to all the toilet seats in the upper years boys' loo trying to improvise a charm to warm all the seats at once.

The boy's punishment is to serve him at Slug Clubs again, on top of the ten points taken for destroying school property, and a detention with Filch to remove the soot and replace the seats.

Arson aside, Lucius fancies himself a bit of a Pygmalion as he sculpts the rough lump of clay that Snape is into something approaching civilized. His dreadful Northern accent is starting to fade at least.

"Excuse me, did you say 'Snape'?"

A middle-aged woman pulls away from her current conversation to come towards him. She has a cheery round face set off by a halo to tight curls.

He doesn't recognize the woman, but if she's a member of the Slug Club she must be a some*one* to know.

Even if she doesn't know that she's supposed to introduce herself fir--

"Ah," She laughs, "There's a much-needed prick to my ego -- I'm Proserpina Fitzwilliams. Most know me on sight so that they can run."

He takes the woman's dainty proffered hand and shakes it limply. He knows the name, of course, Proserpina Fitzwilliams writes for the Prophet's society (and gossip) section, and with her quill she has made and broken the reputations of at least threescore. Even his own mother, fearless as she was, was reluctant to get the woman's bad side.

He'd always pictured the woman as being as pointed and hard as her words could be -- not this quite jolly looking woman in diaphanous lavender robes, wearing at least a dozen fine gold necklaces that glowed against her umber skin.

"Lucius Malfoy."

"Mr. Malfoy, I thought it was you, but I did not want to presume -- my condolences again, on the loss of your mother. Lucretia really was a gem."

Snape has the excellent timing to return with the correct canapes this time -- He knows the woman is only buttering him up, but her words sound so sincere and it's hard --

"Yer -- You-r can - ah - peas, sir," Snape offers up the plate to the both of them.

"Ms. Fitzwilliams, this is my fag, Severus Snape."

Ms. Fitzwilliams looks Snape over speculatively, and to his credit Snape does nothing embarrassing.

"Mr. Snape," Ms. Fitzwilliams coolly takes one of his canapes. It's surprisingly how calm she sounds considering that she's practically vibrating with excitement. "I think I was in the gobstones club with your mother. Her first name wouldn't happen to be Eileen, would it?"

Snape utters a quiet 'yesmam', to which Fitzwilliams let's out a loud crow of satisfaction that has two dozen people stopping to stare at them. Fitzwilliams is utterly unrepentant.

"Sluggy! How could you not tell me that one of your firsties is the half-blood Prince?! Surely you remember Eileen Prince? He's almost the picture of her -- Merlin I haven't thought of her in a dog's age!"

Slughorn looks briefly startled but it's clear that he does recognize the name, but Lucius suspects either not well or not fondly.

Snape, is watching Fitzwilliams with a guarded expression, as if anticipating her to make some crass remark about his heritage. Considering how often he's been ragged in the common room about being a mudblood pretending to be half-blood this year, his suspicion is probably not unjustified.

He remembers his mother mentioning the Princes -- or maybe it was father? He'll have to ask Andromeda later -- she's had a fascination with genealogies and pedigrees since the summer. Always banging on about some chap named Mendeleev...

"You do," She confides to Snape, trying to cajole him fruitlessly into a smile. "Just like her. What splendid fate that I should meet you here tonight." She takes Snape's hand, gives it a firm shake, then says with a wink, "Perhaps you'll be head of the gobstones club yourself one day."

Then Fitzwilliams is gone, making her way across the crowded room to some new victim.
