Yes! There's the link to an article about the event in question. I cannot overstate how hyped people were about the supposed educational value of the 1935 movie. Of course other earlier (and later) versions were also advertised as good moral examples but in my research the marketing campaign for the 1935 version stands out for its emphasis on the film's moral value.
