kinda disappointed that SG1 never used the translation error of offworld locals getting confused by Daniel Jackson, and going on to believe that somehow Daniel is Jack's son.

Yup. There are reasons I continuously return to Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and other shows of the same ilk from the 1990s -2000s. Let me introduce you to the TV Version of Daniel Jackson: Archaeologist, Awkward nerd, Heart and soul of the original titular team, always bringing the group down to earth except when he does the Archaeology Thing (tm) - watch a few episodes and it will make sense (I am an archaeologist and lack the words to describe the level of nerding out we do when we get a proverbial bone). He's played by James Spader in the film, save for actual appearance there are no differences imo.

Here's Jack O'Neil, a man who is here because he was told to be but don't you dare come after his team because no god can save you then. Skaara is also off limits, that kid occupies a similar space in his heart as his own deceased son and they only met for like 5 minutes. He also gets the best lines and is the comic relief, mister standard issue military man. (In the film he's played by Kurt Russell and is less funny but equally protective of his team and the Abydosians).

My girl, the woman who made me genuinely consider joining the Air Force for all of 30 seconds...Sam Carter. Capable, intelligent (a physicist IIRC), and the first woman I saw on screen who - while attractive- was there because she could do the job not because she looked pretty. Yes, they dealt with the "but you're a woman. tee hee" bulllshit regularly and Sam pulls no punches even with her own father (who is a General while she is a Major/Captain and she's like "IDGAF. Old Man is my Dad.") Also, while her love life was a definite side plot, if it wasn't relevant they didn't talk about it.

Teal'c, our Tragic Strait Man and Warrior Monk. He left everything behind to fight for his people and free them from their servitude to literal false gods (the goa'uld). He genuinely cared for his son and the Season 6 opening two-parter is some of the best story telling around him and the Jaffa as a group. It focuses on loss, family, and eventually they get to the "gotta save the earth from the big bad".
Tumblr media
This show was based on 1994/1995 film. Even during high action or comedy centric episodes focused on side characters (yes they did a lot of those and they were great), this era of SciFi shows gave us stories about humanity and what it means to be human. We learned about the characters as people. It was a story of exploration, community building, refugees, and rebellion and finding your place centered on four people from very different backgrounds who go through a "ring thing, it comes with a dailer, you push the buttons and it spins around. Flushes sideways" weekly to deal with either a monster-of-the-week or the over arching plot. Also I can't hear people talk about the ACTUAL space rock Apophis without making a Stargate crack because he was their BBEG for a while. (And yes, it does ACTIVELY make fun of the Ancient Astronaut theory with its whole existence.)
I don't know what those '90s sci Fi TV writers were putting in their shows but I wish they'd start doing it again

kinda disappointed that SG1 never used the translation error of offworld locals getting confused by Daniel Jackson, and going on to believe that somehow Daniel is Jack's son.
