THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I wasn’t actually sure whether people read these ask games, and Vanessa is one of my newer characters that I’m sometimes concerned about so this?? honestly made my day!! this is one of the nicest things people have said to me and I’M THE ONE GOING TO CRY

So to answer some of your questions… Here’s what she looks like! Her face claim is Kassi Smith. The only other detail I would mention about her looks is that she’s about 5′7″, but she’s always wearing heels so she can look taller.

She does have an aesthetic board on pinterest here. I have to warn you though, it’s a really bad aesthetic board — one of my worst ones. I know exactly what her aesthetic is, but I haven’t managed to find the right search terms for it yet. Her pinterest board is in dire need of reconstruction, and it’ll happen at some point, so everything here is subject to change.

So I’m really sorry in advance, because this post is going to end up long. It’s not very often I get asked to talk about an OC, and I’m going to milk it for all it’s worth. Also, she’s a part of two main WIPs I have right now, and she definitely differs in them so I’m just going to give you a rundown of both if that’s ok!

Of course, if you have any questions about her, definitely let me know! I’ll be happy to answer them.

General Vanessa facts

Here’s a couple personality paragraphs I wrote for her when I first conceptualized her:

Fiercely independent and ultimately self-serving, Vanessa exists on her own terms no matter what anyone else tells her. She breezes in and out of everything as she pleases, often finding a person or a hobby of the month due to her fickle nature. Commitment is an unfamiliar concept to her, and there is very little that she returns to regularly — feeling trapped or obligated is not something she takes to kindly. She’s power-hungry and ambitious, Notoriously shallow and indulgent, Vanessa can often be found partaking in activities that shouldn’t be mentioned in respectable conversations. She’s rather flirtatious, though she’s very careful to not reveal too much or let people in too close. Aside from a few exceptions Vanessa is very guarded, preferring the casual relationships that she’s not expected to maintain. As much as Vanessa pretends to not care, pretends that life right now is exactly what she wants, she wants to care and there’s something missing. After five centuries or so of immortality, she’s far too jaded to become involved in anything temporary — romantic or otherwise.

So that was the very first draft of her personality. She largely hasn’t changed, except I would say that she’s even more confident in herself than before, she’s more capable, and is perfectly content with her fickle lifestyle — in the newer versions of For Queen and Country, she does have a purpose and isn’t just aimlessly wandering like she was originally.

Vanessa is characterized by her utter confidence in herself, her mastery at manipulation, playful-but-deadly personality, and her intense avoidance of commitment.

She’s a very social person who can fit in anywhere, so she has a very wide network of friends and acquaintances, but she is very careful about not revealing too much about herself to people. As a general rule, she’s very independent and dislikes being tied down by anything, including romantic partners or friends. The only person she’s consistently there for and relies on is her adopted brother, Alistair (written by the amazing @decantae). He’s her best friend and confidant, and they make a fantastic team.

FQAC!Vanessa

For Queen and Country is an urban fantasy story about how the existence of supernatural creatures exist, and what happens when the human public finds out.

So in For Queen and Country, Vanessa is a vampire. She was born in Scotland several centuries ago, and was turned when she was about 34-ish to fight in a vampire war at the time. That was where she met Alistair, and when he offered her an out from the life of an immortal soldier, she took it without hesitation and they’ve been together ever since. Additionally, her surname Queen comes from Alistair as well. Although they’re close, Vanessa gets bored really easily, so while Alistair has settled down in London, Vanessa is off doing who-knows-what all over the world. She comes back to visit every 5-200 years or so though, to stay with Alistair for a while.

Her original plot in FQAC was that she was traumatized from falling in love with a human who died from disease during an epidemic. This was the cause of her commitment-phobia, and her preference for casual, physical relationships over close intimate ones. When she meets a lady fae, she would have to learn how to deal with romantic feelings that went deeper than just sexual attraction, and her subplot was mainly her freaking out and being in denial about feelings.

Now that FQAC’s plot is more focused on how Alistair’s relationship with Blake develops (his love interest, and another OC of mine) and how they work together to fight for the rights of the supernatural, her current plot is now a bit different. Here, rather than just vacationing and running away from her problems, Vanessa is actively networking with and investigating vampire societies and other supernatural creature societies all over the world. This might include a lot of shady underground stuff. Her role in the plot is now providing valuable global intel, and being an annoying sister. Although I know in my heart that if Vanessa ever does end up with anyone, it’ll be with a woman, at this point I’m not sure if she’ll have a romantic subplot because I feel like she’s completely content with being single forever.

Post-Script!Vanessa

So Post-Script is another story about Alistair and Blake — this time in a Harry Potter AU where Voldemort succeeded in killing Harry and never died.

In this WIP, Vanessa is Alistair’s adopted sister once again, except this time Alistair is a pureblood from a notable family, while Vanessa is muggleborn. She essentially plays the part of a pureblood extremely well, and if people dare to point it out, she has enough blackmail material on them to ruin them. In this universe, Vanessa is a natural legilimens. Not only is she adept at the spell of delving into someone’s mind, she’s a natural mind reader (who cannot turn it off, mind you). So she knows a lot of dirty secrets.

In Post-Script, Vanessa’s outward job is a socialite who is on the Death Eater’s sdie, but she’s actually a spy actively working against Voldemort. She’s also involved in the criminal underworld of the Wizarding Society. She doesn’t actively do traditional criminal things, but she has a lot of shady contacts, and enough blackmail material and insider knowledge to effectively navigate her way.

So yeah, if I had to sum up Vanessa:

If she had to be summarized in a trope, it would be femme fatale

She doesn’t trust anyone but Alistair, and has considerable leverage with people she suspects might turn against her via information she’s gained in various ways.

She’s easily bored, so to fix that she plays with fire.

She may seem like an out-of-control slut, but reality is she is a slut that is very under control.

She’s confident and knows exactly who she is, and can utilize that to a deadly degree.

She hates commitment and refuses to get into any serious relationships.

Vanessa likes playing with her food, so to speak. She really enjoys messing with people and getting into their heads — especially if it’s an enemy.

First of all, omg, @yeraswifey THANK YOU for your incredibly sweet comment! I don't write fluff or romance often, so I always worry about whether or not it sounds unrealistic. Bex is very special to me as well. I do have some facts!

Erica dropped out of high school after [REDACTED] to help her dad raise her younger siblings, Connor and Cassie, who are twins.

Sloane was sent to juvenile detention center after nearly beating a man within an inch of his life. She was at a bar, watching a local punk band play, and this drunk dude got grabby and kissy with a girl who was so drunk she could barely stand.

Sloane comes across as cold, abrasive, and mean, but she really isnt. She's just been through a lot and has convinced herself she doesnt need anybody. I have a tag for Sloane if you wanna see more.

Erica is a talented painter and she also is great at cooking.! I have a tag for her as well.

She did! When she and Sloane first started talking, Erica was too shy to tell Sloane she had a crush on her. But she didnt want to creep Sloane out by painting a portrait of her, so what she did instead was paint a portrait of all the anger, and hurt, and sadness that she could see inside of Sloane.

She painted a portrait of those emotions inside a ball the size of planet Earth, then painted a girl holding the ball. It was meant to be Sloane, of course. Erica then gave the portrait to Bex, who gave it to Sloane.

Erica painted that as a therapeutic exercise, and also because she wanted Sloane to know that all of those emotions, once they come out, they can't hurt you anymore. And Sloane was so touched by the portrait, even if she couldn't say that until much later on in their relationship.

Media Influences for "And Still the Earth is Blue"

Yah Yah @fluoresensitive tagged me in this game to talk about what media inspired aspects of one of my WIPs! This short story, "And Still the Earth is Blue", I haven't talked a lot about in public or private. The story follows an astronaut, Astraea Davis, and her 450 day long mission on a space station orbiting earth. It focuses on space madness, isolation, and the overview effect.

Each of the pieces I've chosen have elements that influence aspects of the story. The space madness of "The Naked Time", a ship come to life of "Event Horizon", the isolation and fear of "Kaleidoscope", and what I like to call The Becoming of "The Yellow Wallpaper".

THE NATURAL ORDERS: Book Two

Heather, once Pandora, has reclaimed who she once was in order to lead her people and fight the Revolutionists and Creators. But there is a new enemy on the horizon--a mistake she made long ago when she was abandoned and alone--and she must face it before it destroys everything she holds dear. Domum, Quinn, and the peculiar girl she pulled from the lake included. 

But Heather is weaker. Weaker than she was even in her arrogant youth. In order to take back her powers, she will have to reveal her greatest secrets. Secrets of her past. Secrets of her love. Secrets about what she is really the goddess of. It can destroy or remake her. But all must be revealed in order to defeat the Dark God.

After the events at Genesis Point, Domum Deorum’s leaders have needed to adapt. The Nameless War is coming to their doorstep, and the remaining Original Phantom Suns must lead them into it. 

Once Pandora, Heather, the Commander of Domum Deorum and formidable Goddess of Nothing, fights to right the wrongs committed by humanity’s Revolutionists, destroying as many Pathospirits as she can. She knows she cannot do it on her own, but she made a mistake long ago. One that she fully intends to burn for.

Quinn, having regained his memories of Heather as well as his feelings, refuses to abandon her during her time of need. But in the years he was gone she had buried millions of bodies--both of her friends and enemies. He can save her from the demons who continue to haunt her, but the true question is whether or not she is willing to allow him to save her from herself.

Natia lost everything in the fire--herself included. All that keeps her alive now is the desire to avenge her family, but something inside of her has awoken, and only one goddess can help her control it.

The future of the gods and humanity rests entirely on whether or not the three of them join together in the fight for survival. The past will be challenged, relationships will be fractured, and Heather, fractured as she is, will have to face the fires of hell. But she will not be alone.

Domum Deorum: The home of the New Phantom Suns, once hidden in the northern mountain range of the R.O.V., is now being hunted by the Revolutionists and the shadow demons they’ve taken as their slaves. Heather and Quinn must figure out how to defend their sanctuary for humans and gods before hellfire rains in.

Obloryn: The all-powerful capital of the R.O.V. is the only successful area of neutrality during the Nameless War due to its leader paying Ophelia obscene amounts of money. Inside its walls of corruption lay things more powerful than any human could possibly conceive. It’s up to Quinn and Heather to take it back before her greatest enemy can take it for himself.

geez this took a loooooooooooooooooooong time. i’m glad to have published it though!

a few announcements about Dark God... it is a very brutal installment. infinite tangents was very soft in terms of death and gore, but this book is meant to tear the character apart so they have to rearrange themselves. therefore a lot of what i post will be short in order to exclude important things such as character deaths. secondly, this book isn’t my focus as of right now. i’m trying to get infinite tangents edited so it can be published hopefully some time in my second semester. which leads into the third... as infinite tangents is edited it will be published onto wattpad (my username is _nemesisrising_), so please go vote for me on there!

finally, I want to thank you for your patience. I know I said I would be back on the first but I got strep during my tech week, which is another story in itself. 1. Do you care how long a chapter is or it doesn’t matter?

I care! Too much. But I usually try to let the chapters be organic. If a chapter is long because it has a lot of worldbuilding, or a lot of new character introductions, or maybe gathering some plot threads, then it probably needs to be longer. And if a chapter is short, I try to go back and see where I can write it a little longer —giving scenes more plot meaning.

Ah, and my usual chapter length is between 3500 to 5000 words in my fantasy novel ‘The Serpent Kiss’.

2. What do you consider is your writing quirk?

I act out most of my dialogue and interactions. Ehm. And I like to mildly ‘method act’ my characters, meaning dressing up as them and live through their emotions and physical experiences (those that are not harming to myself or others). I write sleepy scenes when I’m tired, scary scenes when I’m scared and so on.

And, yes. I write in wig, cape and fangs once in a while. I can recommend it.

3. What’s your favourite scene you’ve ever read?

That’s too big a Q. I’ve read literally millions of scenes in all geres.. hmm but on the very top of my mind (glancing at my bookshelve) we’ve got:

The flogging scene in ‘An Ember in the Ashes’

The staircase scene where the cook dies in ‘Prince of Thorns’

The forest - something is in the woods OR the -something is in the house, scenes in ‘Watchers’ (brilliant)

4. What inspires you?

Death and art and smut.

Sometimes humor.

5. Do you have a writing space? What is it?

Yea! As of next month (slash technically this month) I’m officially a full-time writer and my physiotherapist was very stern when we talked working positions!

I have my office in the living room of our teeny apartment! It’s a homemade fold out desk, build by mr T and his dad, and it’s beautiful and had it’s mounted spot by the window. Duo screen and LED lit monster below. I love love it! And I’m super psyched about ‘moving into’ the spot. I’m also getting a serious chair so my spine will have a great time. Yay!

6. Do you have soundtrack for your WIPs?

Oh ma gawd. Yeah. All the cinematic atmospheric sounds and tunes!!

Not reeeeally. I’ve got a few guys who comes close to how my characters look, but I never actually find the exact face to match the one in my head.

8. What was your hardest scene to write?

The opening one. Ugh. And I’m still not happy-happy with it. It need an editor to tell me how to tweak it.

9. What was your hardest scene to read?

Ehm. Hm... I love it when books makes me emotional. The sobbing, the bursting laugher, uh the chills!! But I do NOT like ‘the cringe’. So, all scenes that are like criiiingy social interaction or really embarrassing humiliation, is hard for me to read.

I must admit that I also have a tough time getting through scenes that are flat out poor dialogue. The unintentional cringe.. oof.

hello! n happy STS! are any of your ocs overly sensitive emotion wise? Maybe not even outwardly getting angry, but perhaps internalizing things? do you have a FAVORITE oc??? 👀 👀 👀 -yeraswifey (thats my writblr)

Hi Cherish 😊 thanks for the great question

My most sensitive OC is Tristan who’s made of feelings and cares about all the things very strongly and doesn’t shy back from expressing that. A close second is Lord Bastian, who also has a lot of feelings (mostly various degrees of rage toward Sarra) and expresses them very loudly. 

The most oversensitive is The High Prelate who decided to murder a good chunk of the country because sixty years ago his pride was injured ;) so ... yeah.

When the story starts, she isn't really part of the Lost Girls. Like you said, she is very protective of herself (and there are other reasons, which you'll learn about later). Having friends =getting attached. Getting attached means she isn't completely in control of her actions, and that scares her. She has a few close friends she hangs out with, sometimes, and then of course, she has Erica.

Later on, she does become friends with the other Lost Girls, but it takes a long time and she still remains a solo kinda girl.

You're not wrong; Sloane *is* edgy. Poor girl. I'm really quite mean to her.

Sloane is a DJ three nights a week at a wlw club, called Ladies First. She loves deejaying and loves music. When she isn't doing that, she likes to take hot bubble baths (she would kill me for saying that) and play video games.

Gil is afraid of dogs, I’ve learned recently. He heard the Hunt riding when he was little boy, and it scared the beejeezus out of him. 

If my babies came to life, I’m sure they wouldn’t be able to resist coming and causing me some mischief, so I’m pretty sure they’d make their presence known right away! Probably starting with hiding my laptop, so I couldn’t do any more damage :P

She inhaled, eyes on the combination of H O L Y and U N H O L Y materials. More snow melted below, her black blood hot with power on the ground. It sizzled as it crawled further on the grass. How many demons had this portal already let in? What if--if it were even possible--it had let H I M in? What would she do then? She doubted she’d be powerful enough to fight back. 

No. He couldn’t be back. She C A G E D him well enough that he wouldn’t be able to escape for years and years. Maybe F O R E V E R if she was lucky.

But if she did have to fight him… There was no debate on whether she would F A I L or not. She wiped out three demons, sure. And she had destroyed a countless number of Serpentine’s doorways. Still, her hair had only turned white in a few spots as a testament to her returning power, and the streak over her nose was already starting to F A D E.

Heather could win a war against Serpentine, even with these obstacles, and she could defeat Omne should it come down to a battle between the two of them. No matter how hard she hoped she knew she couldn’t win a war against the D E V I L if he rose again. And that was a war Quinn wouldn’t S U R V I V E either..

Exhaling, she loosed her arrow and watched the fire S U R G E.
