2 Granite, 250: “We’re sending you out to establish a new fort,”
We were told in Obsidian 249. We were an expedition team sent to expand the kingdom, and that for some reason, I was to be the expedition leader. Ever since our King Nishkab established the first fort, “The Common Gem” has been a prosperous kingdom for the Dwarves; something that is becoming more uncommon everyday, with the growing threat of invasion by the Goblins.
Anyway, we were given the option of where we wanted to establish this fort, and there was many options, given how massive Opuxah is.
Now keep in mind that The Common Gem has hundreds of Dwarves, and they decided that seven of us was sufficient. We’ll be lucky if we aren’t dead by the first of Slate. Cheap sons of bitches..
Anyway, back to the location. I told our cartographers that anywhere was fine, as long as there was no god damn aquifer. It’s going to be hard enough surviving in the middle of nowhere, and we certainly don’t need our miners drowning while digging our fort.
After being given all of our options, we (I) settled on the north-ish end of the mountains in the southwest, our cartographers delivered us a better map of the area which I’ve included below.
The yellow X at the end of the stream almost directly in the middle of the map is our planned embark location, and we were given a very detailed map of that area in particular.
So as you can see we’re setting out to the area just next to the river, and we’re planning to establish out fort in the mountain to the south. I am not looking forward to saying goodbye to my friends and family to head out on what is essentially a suicide mission. Only time will tell...
8 Granite, 250:
We embark for the location of the new settlement today. It should take us around three days to get there. We will be left with one wagon full of goods. That’s all we were allotted. One. Fucking. Wagon. It’s almost like they want us to die.
Saying goodbye is very hard when you know that you might never see the people that you’ve spent your entire life with ever again. But that’s the price to pay for progress, I suppose.
11 Granite, 250:
We arrived at the location today. Our caravan dropped us in the middle of fucking nowhere. I can see some trees to the northeast, and of course the mountain to the south. I cannot see the river from here, but I know it is there. Would’ve been nice for them to drop us a little closer to where we actually planned on settling, though. I’ve included a rough sketch of the area below.
Shortly before they left, they told us that the fort we were settling was to be called Oddomnelas, which roughly translates to “Cloisterflickers,” whatever the hell that means.
13 Granite, 250:
We’ve dug into the mountain, and were promptly greeted with the grim reality that we had no soil to grow our plump helmets in. If we can’t get these planted, we have absolutely no chance of making it even until the first trade caravan gets here in the fall.
Then Geshud had the idea of dumping some water into an area we wanted to plant in, and hopefully enough of that would make the ground fertile enough to allow us to get a harvest or two. We’ll likely have a few men work on that while we attempt to expand into the mountain a bit more.
19 Granite, 250:
By some miracle, Geshud’s plan actually worked! We actually managed to get some workable farm plots underground! We aren’t going to starve!
9 Felsite, 250:
Some migrants arrived today. There’s two farmers and a cook that showed up with some animals. Thankfully they didn’t bring any kids. We hardly have enough food to feed the working people here, let alone some useless little shits.
We’ve expanded into the mountain a bit, and set up some workshops, stockpiles, and living quarters. Nothing notable has happened thus far. We struck amethyst, if you want to call that an achievement.
19 Sandstone, 250:
It has been several months since I’ve written an entry. I guess we’ve just been so busy that I haven’t had time.
A lot has happened since my last entry. We’ve built a still, so now we should have a steady supply of ale, which’ll keep the people happy. We also built a dining room, so we don’t have to eat off of the floor anymore.
Possibly the most important addition is the wall that was built. It isn’t anything special, but hopefully it should keep off some of the more aggressive wild animals. We still need to put in a drawbridge, but that’s a problem for another day.
We’re approaching a year in this hellhole, and it’s starting to actually look like a home. I’ll try to keep up with the correspondence whenever I am able to. It isn’t like we get many visitors here. Hopefully this isn’t the last you hear from me.
Regards,
Jake, SadAndMalone
Real talk: I just got into Dwarf Fortress for the third time now around a week ago and I have been having a huge amount of fun with it, so bear with me as I do a lot of stupid things, and probably watch Cloisterflickers die in a matter of a few years. I’m using LNP, and I am playing with Dwarf Therapist running to manage labors. I am using the Spacefox tile set.
