The Corporate Sustainability Agenda: Reimagining Capitalism in Asia: Towards Sustainable Growth Over the past decade, the stakeholder capitalism model of corporate finance is quickly gaining traction across both developed and developing markets. For the first time in over 40 years, the World Economic Forum (WEF) updated its "Davos Manifesto" to clearly state the purpose of a company as “to engage all its stakeholders in shared and sustained value creation", and for companies to have zero tolerance for corruption, uphold human rights and pay their fair share of taxes. Rather than just maximising profits at the expense of others, stakeholder capitalism orients corporations to evaluate the environmental and social risks and opportunities of their business model, in line with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards. This approach requires a deeper view of business in capital-allocation decisions, seeing a company’s approach to people, the planet, innovation and how it ensures an economy that works for all as essential to the long-term success and health of any business. In the new socio-economic context created by the fallout from COVID-19, the case for stakeholder capitalism is not just a sensible business decision, but also an ethical and necessary choice. The Tech Agenda: Creating A Digital Main Street. According to a recent study, as many as 40 million people across Southeast Asia came online for the first time in 2020, bringing the total number of Internet users in the region to 400 million, thanks in part to the rise of remote working and lockdown measures imposed throughout the year. On the back of this optimistic prospect, e-commerce giants are set for strong growth in the region as businesses establish their presence online to access a wider audience to stay afloat – a trend that has taken place in just under a year in what was expected to take a decade to happen. Similarly, businesses in the region, big and small, have also begun to leverage on digital solutions such as Cloud computing and its exponentially increasing capacities so to enable ‘Business as Usual’ (BAU) for its day-to-day operations. Yet, the risk of massive data breaches and other privacy concerns weigh heavily on the minds of both consumers and businesses alike. Many in remote areas of Southeast Asia are still unprepared for this new norm as they face obstacles like low Internet quality and large intergenerational families having divisive levels of digital literacy.
