i think i mentioned this before but i actually love the idea of esther gradually finding out david is in love with jack. like it's just little hints but when it gets through to her it makes so much sense. for example one day she asked sarah "how's jack?" or "is jack coming over for dinner tonight?" and sarah just kind of scrunched her eyebrows and went "how should i know? ask david" and esther was confused because she was so sure that jack was courting sarah. and then one day she paid attention to how close jack and david were at the dinner table, even if there was no real reason for it, and how they exchanged glances and giggled from time to time, and they've always sat like this, always acted like this, so why didn't she ever pay attention to it? or in the mornings, before david went to school, she always heard some rustling--a window opening, some hushed voices, eventually a quiet laugh--and one day she just got curious, she took a peek inside david's room, and she saw jack leaning in through the open window. and her son went red in the face (for some reason?) but jack just smiled and said good morning like the polite boy he was, and esther realized that jack went out of his way to wake up early just to see david before he went to school. and one day when she went to the rooftop to hang the laundry she noticed something scribbled on the brick half-wall with charcoal messily--the initials 'j' and 'd' with a plus between them--and she didn't have to think long before she realized it stood for jack and david. and that's really when she started taking the possibility of david and jack being queer into consideration. she wasn't even shocked, she just didn't know how she didn't realize earlier. and i think from that point on she just made sure to make jack feel even more welcome
