"So um. If I wanted to, ah, tie the knot with someone, how would I do that?"
A tilt of her head, the phone in her hand momentarily forgotten. “Tie the knot?” It takes Akali a second to fully register the question. When she does, she lights up in shock, grinning as she turns all her attention to Ekko.
“Wait. Don’t tell me you’re—?” She doesn’t finish what she was going to ask; instead, she laughs and places her hands on her lap, leaning towards the other rapper. “Holy shit! You wanna propose to someone? That’s great!” To say that she’s excited for her friend is an understatement. She can’t even wait for the big day.
And the fact that Ekko went to her about something this important meant a lot. Never in her life had she felt so flattered. Or maybe touched was a better word. Because, despite her subpar advice at times, Ekko still wanted to know what she thought about this.
“Don’t worry, you went to the right person. It’s pretty simple, actually.” Proposing is a piece of cake. Totally. The ring on her finger is no joke, after all. That is, until she remembers just how exactly her own proposal went. Then her laughter turns shy and her grin becomes sheepish. Until now, she still didn’t know just how exactly she got married to the most wonderful woman in the world. A part of her still couldn’t wrap her mind around it.
“You, uh. Hm.” Her expression turns pensive. How should she put this? There’s really no perfect way to go about it. Even her own proposal took an unplanned turn. “Just be yourself. You can never go wrong with that. You guys are together for a reason, yeah?”
“I mean, when I was gonna propose, I wanted to surprise her, so I tried to keep it on the down-low ‘til the time was right.” She continues speaking before her bandmate could react, referring to her wife. “But at that point in our relationship, where I just knew I want to spend the rest of my life with her, she already knew me all too well.” There’s this fond look in her eyes as she thinks back to that beautiful moment.
“She read me like an open book. I was acting differently than usual. Can you blame me though? I was nervous as hell!” Akali chuckles. “I still kept the ring a secret, but she already had a feeling something was up. Didn’t make it any less special when I finally proposed though.” A wink. She can’t keep anything to herself properly around her wife; her tendency to wear her heart on her sleeve combined with her wife’s familiarity with her just led to them being open with each other. And that’s okay.
“Look, what I’m saying is: you can do whatever you want. Take ‘em on a date to their favorite place or keep things simple. Prepare a speech like you’re Shakespeare or something. Or don’t, and just get straight to the point. Let ‘em know you’re serious about it. And if you need a wingwoman to help set the mood, you know who to ask.”
