There are many indications that men who learned seidr were respected and even had high status at one time. The mighty Odin himself was his teacher, his role model, Odin whose cult was attended by kings and high-ranking members of society, by the much-loved professional bards and by warrior heroes. The two examples of castrated men in the Poetic Edda, Sinfiötli and Atli, were highly respected members of the royal court, with authority to teach princes.
Seidr for men could involve both transsexuality and homosexuality, but it was also âunmasculineâ because it belonged, first and foremost, to the feminine sphere. In the Old Norse worldview, femininity was associated with the âotherâ side, the magical, wild nature, and the afterlife. Masculinity represented âthisâ side of existence, the world of politics and society. Each sex could move between these boundaries, but political action was still considered a masculine sphere, while magical actions were considered feminine. A woman who had no choice but to speak for herself in the assembly (a widow with no adult man to speak to her case) would assume a male role that was acceptable but not preferable. A man who dedicated his life to the art of magic was taking on a feminine role that was acceptable, but not fully respected by everyone in an otherwise quite sexist society.
There were probably also different types of male practitioners, some more gender-biased than others. While some are called seidmadr â the word that definitively affirms their male sex, a different type of male practitioner was called seidberendr â which literally means âseidr -vaginaâ. That the seidr -man and the seidr -vagina are two different types of male practitioners is clear from the poem Hyndluljod, where the two receive different inheritances, just as the völva has her own. A curious observation is the fact that the castrated males â Odin, Sinfiötli and Atli â are compared to horses. The name Ialk is not translated as eunuch, but as gelding â a castrated horse. At the same time, the witch â the völva â is named after her wand or staff, the völ, which is also the name of a stallion's penis. We know of a saga of a domestic ritual involving the penis of a sacrificed horse â called âVölsiâ â being offered to giantesses. Another connection with giantesses is made in the poem mentioned above, where it is said that Sinfiötli was castrated by giantesses.
The title völva indicates that she has been initiated into völ, and this is what gives her the authority to exercise it. Völur tombs suggest that they were related to the male and female spheres, and the wand could well be a phallic symbol, giving it authority to transcend gender boundaries. In the same way, we might imagine, a specific type of male sorcerers â the âseidr -vaginasâ â operated with a symbolic (or self-experienced) vagina associated with the female practice of seidr to a degree or in a way that perhaps the âseidr menâ did. they couldn't. Perhaps this experience of having a special vagina for magical purposes was a permanent condition experienced by transsexual sorcerers, or perhaps it was something experienced on specific ritual occasions. An Old Norse word for âsorcerer,â Gylfi, actually indicates âshape-shifting sorcerer,â âwerewolf,â and âsorcerer who turns into a woman every nine nights.â
Being transgender is not uncommon in many shamanic contexts. Furthermore, castration and feminization of male practitioners or devout worshipers are also known in mystery cults, such as that of Cybele, and in some Hindu cults to this day. In ancient Norse society, male practitioners of seidr were quite common, and one of their most powerful deities, Odin, practiced it without shame. The poems talk about gender bending as something quite honorable, or at least sometimes useful and necessary, if not a normal thing to do. These attitudes toward gender fluidity are evident in the mythological figures of Odin and Freya, as well as their counterparts in myth and legend. They transcend the roles assigned to their gender and are considered the main deities of seidr, a type of witchcraft. This trait would probably have been enough to see them as "sluts" and examples of the true perversion of the old faith by those who didn't want to dig deeper.
When analyzing the character Munch, we can see that he also carries a transgender context. Munch has always been on the margins of society, which is consistent with his identity. Furthermore, during the ritual, Munch painted runes on himself that refer to the feminine, the vagina and so on. These symbolic choices reinforce the connection between Munch and unconventional gender expression. There is a lot about Munch transcoded that needs to be covered.

tenth doctor adventures: vol. 2... my thoughts!!!!
basically, i think this is going to be a live-blog of sorts... iâve got notepad open and iâm going to write stuff down as i listen and probably go back and add in some more in-depth commentary where i feel itâs warranted... here we go!
infamy of the zaross.
okay, right off the bat the theme song made me very emotional and long intensely for the days when i loved this show and got super stoked about watching. i mean the thrill running through my veins at this song man⊠god i miss it.
totally loved the beginning... it was a much-welcome interaction with jackie. and i loved her sticking up for rose from marge... god what an unpleasant woman
âflash mob?â lolol the doctor still proficient in pop culture slang i see
âwell, i am that goodâ yes you are đ
the taRDIS sounds â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
jackie doesnât back down from these brutes at all itâs very IC
âstitch thisâ C L A S S I CÂ đđ»
i love when the doctor is so angry he /almost/ appears calm itâs frightening as ever and i can picture it so well. i think they really did justice to how his rage tends to manifest
âwe save planets, the three of usâ w2g jackie
âthe tall skinny thingâ (in reference to the doctor) lmao
i like how rose played a huge part in saving the day in this story, and that they didnât relegate her to a supporting role, or worse - a helpless one. that was one of my major concerns about these audios if iâm honest. it was a relief!
âoh youâve got guns do you? iâve got a screwdriverâ - frankly amazing
i love roseâs speech to jess. just goes to show how far sheâs come bc i think she used to feel similarly when we met her back in s1, you know?
âwho just saved the world - karen or jess?â rose slayinâ it again! i also like how they didnât put arbitrary family relationships on a pedestal in this story. that was one thing that annoyed me about the end of the idiotâs lantern, and i think a common thread that seems to run throughout dw.
âiâve got the tardis. iâve got you! (THERE WAS EMPHASIS HERE NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE) what else does a wandering time lord need?â YES THIS IS THE CONTENT I AM HERE FOR
âwho wants to watch a tv series about me?â HAH!!! cheesy but i DO NOT CARE I LOVE IT
overall, i enjoyed this story a lot! i feel they kept everyone in character and i canât recall anything cringe-worthy or that i wish theyâd done differently. what a pleasant surprise! đ
the sword of the chevalier.
rose still wandering off after all this time lol
âwe were having a lovely day out, i was hoping for ice creamâ how utterly domestic i love it
has the doctor been listening to too much sia btw??? he wonât shut up about that chandelier lol
âyou little devilâ admittedly at first i didnât know WHAT she had possibly put on to make him say this, but in retrospect knowing it was ACTUALLY a devil costume i still feel like this was 100% meant as a double entendre the way it was delivered (thank you david)... theyâre def gonna be roleplaying later
his name is LUIGI in this little scenario WHY omg
honestly iâm sorta bummed we didnât get to hear ten attempt to sing
the doctor munching on sandwiches at such an inopportune time lol so typical
protective!ten is back with his angry growling voice and i am here for it
âyou try and put a price on life you only expose how worthless you areâ good line doc damn
âiâm not one for killing blowsâ no you arenât bb and itâs why i adore you
when they addressed him as their âmasterâ and he was like âthatâs more like itâ all seductive like ngl i sort of got off on that whole interaction đ i love it when the doctor gets to acknowledge and capitalize on his power for a second đ„
âtell rose how good i am with a swordâ ok at first i was like man heâs still constantly and desperately seeking roseâs approval i see and that was thrilling enough in itself BUT THEN IT GOT EVEN MORE RIDICULOUS
âabout 30 seconds of goodâ - ROSE TLYER
THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A KIDâS PROGRAM GOD DAMN!!!! đ
this is what they acted like isnât it???
(also ten you gotta step up your endurance game bro đđđ)
LITERALLY DIED OVER THIS A LONG TIME. STILL DYING ACTUALLY.
ANYWAY.
my only true issue with this story was i felt like they didnât handle the ambiguously transgender character with as much sensitivity as i might like? but i also donât feel qualified to offer an opinion here, iâd be interested to hear what any trans listeners out there thought.
aside from this, overall i still thought it a solid episode that felt pretty authentically rtd who. and it was just as vivid and easy to picture as the first story. made me feel like i was watching a bonus episode of season 2, which is quite a feat i think. i am getting sooooo nostalgic the longer i sit here listening. i miss these two so much.
cold vengeance.
they were going to go skiing and i am so disappointed they didnât get to their intended destination bc if that ainât the start to a glorious christmas fanfic idk what is
âme? guess? never. itâs always informed deduction.â too true đ
losing the tardis... ah, classic ten/rose
i donât think iâll ever get tired of hearing david say âiâm the doctorâ (and lbr i donât think he will either)
i love that there are scottish characters in this â€ïž
âyou believe you can give me (long pompous title here) an ultimatum?â âyes, i doâ slay âem, babe
âiâm a time lord, and you do not want to get on the wrong side of me!â there it is again đ„
âone chance, thatâs all rose tyler ever needs.â
i do love that rose once again saved herself (with help) they really didnât fall back on the âdoctor has to save the helpless human companionâ trope in these stories and i am grateful for that, it was another one of my fears going in
âi was planning to come backâ âyeah right, thatâs what you always sayâ well, that stung đ
âiâm not going anywhere without roseâ thatâs my boy đđ»
ânobody is expendable!â đđ»
callumâs (sp?) mom seems strangely un-bothered by her son dying? or is that just me
âyou donât know what real honor and sacrifice mean. take it from someone who doesâ CHILLS
âafter this, can we go somewhere warm?â did anyone else hear this with a đ ? or am i just still flying on the high of the last super-suggestive conversation?
another great story!
this whole experience was so much better than i anticipated. i had some characterization issues with volume one. the experience wasnât quite as immersive as i was expecting; it did feel disconnected from tenâs original run in a way thatâs hard to pin down. so i came into volume two quite worried the same would apply here, and itâd only be worse since this is OUR SHIP, the couple that means more than literally any other couple in all of fiction to our little fandom sect. any damage done to them was bound to leave scars, since all the lines were being read in their proper voices. i was so worried that they would mess up one or both of their characterization, or throw in something gross like a moffat casanova trope.
and i am SO GLAD THEY DIDNâT. i feel like they did my fave characters justice this round and david and billie simply NAILED their performances despite it being like ten years since they last played these characters opposite one another... i am simply floating on happiness right now.
i wonât lie and say i wasnât wishing for more shippy tsr style dialogue b/w them, but we did get a few, and i think nothing but fanfic could ever satisfy me in that respect, probably ;) so i let them off the hook for that.
as long as they continue in this vein...
GIVE ME VOLUME THREE!!!
#bf ten audios#just me ramblingggggg#if anyone wants to chat more i am down#ten x rose#otp: she's all you want in the universe
