playing pretend.
who up mourning that this is the last prompt. it’s me im up. anyways for Dress Uniform we’re going all the way back to Wendover. It’s December, 1942, and John Egan’s about to find out that he is in fact, a very good actor.
—
The frigid air reminds him vaguely of Manitowoc.
Of course, it would get much colder, snow piling up against the door. He’d help his dad dig out the pathway leading up to the house, the sidewalk, the driveway. And he remembers steam puffing up around their mouths, how he’d take his dad down in the snow to save his sisters from the “dragon” and how powder would cling to his curls. It’s something sobering, warming — he’s not drunk, not enough to have much trouble finding his way.
Wendover isn’t big. There’s base, and there’s the town, and the local bar. On a weekend, they might’ve taken a bus into Salt Lake City, but it’s Thursday, so they all settled for this instead with no practice flight tomorrow. He could take his chances walking back alone, and he doesn’t hate the memories that are choosing to accompany him. He likes the cold, for the most part.
He shoves his hands into the well-worn pockets of his dress uniform, hums under his breath as he takes in the windows with their lights off. If he had a watch, he’d check the time, but he doesn’t. Bucky just knows that it’s late, because he’s never been the kind of guy to call his nights early.
The song they’d been singing in the bar has wormed its way into his thoughts and he’d have to pester Brady for the name of it tomorrow.
He’s halfway between bar songs and shoveled snow when he hears hurried footsteps behind him. He doesn’t have much time to turn around before he’s being swathed by the scent of a peachy perfume, arms hugging one of his and he’s met with slightly frizzy hair, and eyes boring into his own; hazel ones, alight with something indiscernible. He knows her face, because it’s hard to forget something that pretty, but he and Lieutenant Savorre hardly ever spo—
“There you are!” She practically chirps, jovial. If it weren’t for the fact that he can’t smell anything on her breath he’d ask if she was drunk. She’s not though, as she tilts her head up to sear a kiss against his cheek that’s warmer than the whiskey in his blood. Her breath ghosts against the shell of his ear, making him shiver.
“Sorry for the trouble, Captain, but those boys back there have been trailing me for the past block. Could you play along?” Bucky hears it, then. The loud laughter, and as he turns his head he catches glances of the group in his peripheral vision. How they double over one another and stumble, loud and reckless in the quiet. They aren’t Army, not by the way they’re dressed. If Savorre’s scared or nervous, she doesn’t show it. Her lips are pressed into a tight smile as she looks up at him and they keep walking.
Bucky’s never been much of an actor, but he figures he can try.
“Hey, sweetheart,” he leans forward, daring to press a kiss to her hair and Savorre bows her head to let him, like they’ve practiced this before. “Took you long enough.”
“Got caught up with a friend,” Savorre’s reply is breezy as she lifts her head once more. “Missed you like crazy though.” Bucky swallows, harder than he means to, at how easily the words come to her. And if it weren’t for the clamor behind them, he could easily forget that she was just saying it to say it.
“Like crazy, huh?” he counters with a grin of his own. Savorre’s nose scrunches, her eyes narrow.
“Don’t tease me.”
“Can’t help it,” he counters. She huffs, and he chuckles. “C’mere.” Bucky moves his arm from her grip to drape around her shoulders, pulling her into his side and dunking himself further in the scent of her, the warmth of a body pressed against his own. Her hand finds his heart through his jacket, hand curling against fabric.
She’s too good at this.
Savorre keeps looking up at him, laughs at the jokes he comes up with and counters his quick remarks with her own. His thumb presses into her shoulder as he tries to make sense of their predicament. Or rather, the fact that this is the most they’ve really spoken since meeting a couple weeks ago. And he can’t help but be mildly surprised at how easy she makes this all look: she laughs and lightly pats at his chest and bats her eyelashes like she really is his “sweetheart.” It’s impressive. It’s off putting.
He glances behind them momentarily as he leans down as if his plan is to whisper something salacious in her ear.
“Bank left,” he mutters, and Savorre giggles and gasps out a “Sir!” that sells as he veers down a sidestreet with her in tow. They move a few feet behind and Bucky looks behind them to watch the group of boys stumble past, paying them no mind.
Savorre untangles herself from him with a soft sigh, straightening out her jacket and he watches for a moment. His well of words has run dry and all he can really do is stare as she rights herself; straightening her tucked in tie and rumpled collar, before her gaze drags up the length of him to settle on his face.
“Sorry for the trouble, sir. I hope I’m not uh– in trouble for that.” Bucky balks at her.
“What? No. I’m not—” he pauses, before waving his hand dismissively. “Stays between us. That happen often?” Savorre looks a little caught off by his question, before she presses her lips into a line.
“Sometimes, in Texas.” She shrugs, looking at the main street. “Usually we
travel like a pack but my partner had to make sure our Radio Op got back safe and I was handling something with the bar owner.” She reaches up to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. He doesn’t miss it — the way she keeps the details vague and he isn’t going to press her for them. But he does smile a little bit.
“Your partner, that’s—”
“Neumann, yeah. Tiny one, black hair,” Savorre demonstrates by holding her hand near her mouth and Bucky can form the image pretty quickly. It was hard not to stare at them.
“I don’t think she’s a fan of me,” Bucky admits and Savorre chuckles at that. He’s pretty sure this is a real laugh of hers, and she shakes her head a little bit.
“Everyone thinks that. It’s just her face. Promise she hasn’t said anything bad, sir.”
“So you girls talk about us?” Savorre rolls her eyes, but he doesn’t think it’s malicious as she raises a brow towards him.
“If you’re hoping for the inside scoop all I can offer is that we’ve been calling you ‘the tall one’, so don’t get too excited,” Savorre smiles a little, like it’s the secret he’s been waiting to be let in on. Maybe it is, because he’s been curious about all thirty of them since he met the pilots on the runway. He presses a little more.
“If I’m the tall one then what’s Kidd?”
“That’s classified information for the 349th to know and for neither you or Kidd to ever find out.” Bucky kisses his teeth, makes a hissing noise as he puts a hand over his heart as if he’d been wounded. She laughs again, with a slight shake of her head and a roll of her eyes.
“Y’know Savorre, they say secrets are poison to a marriage.”
“So now it’s a marriage? I thought it was a rescue mission.”
“Well I’m hoping if I promote myself I’ll get clearance to know what it is.” Savorre makes an ‘ah’ noise, then hums, like she’s really considering it. Makes a point to take her chin between fingers and stroke it pensively, staring up at the cloudy night above them before clicking her tongue and shaking her head.
“Sound argument, sir, but no can do. Plus I’d have to be the one to promote you anyways if that’s how you wanna play it.”
She’s got him there. There’s a glint to her eye — something like mischief — and Bucky’s pretty quick to decide that he likes talking to her and wants to do it more. Mostly because she’s funny, which he didn’t know, and in part because somehow she’s made the idea of Jack Kidd being called anything besides Jack or Kidd seem like the most interesting thing in the world. It feels like a game in some respects and Bucky likes a good game.
“You can drop the sir,” Bucky offers. “...when we’re offbase.” An olive branch, or something like it, he watches the way her face softens up some in surprise, before she tilts her head and furrows her brows.
“Are you sure?”
“It’s just us. Bucky works fine.” Savorre looks like she’s contemplating it for a moment, her expression virtually unreadable. It’s always been pretty easy for him to decide who he does and doesn’t like; it’s easy for him to file Savorre into the prior category as opposed to the latter. She nods, slowly, mutters his name under her breath before fixing her gaze back on him with a smile; warm, friendly.
“This isn’t just a way to get yourself on the fast track to promotion, is it?” Bucky scoffs in mock offense.
“Y’know, if you weren’t smiling all nicely I’d be offended by that.” He whines. Savorre snorts a little bit, which he doesn’t expect.
“Well then sorry, Bucky, and you can call me Viv when it’s just us. If that’ll make it up to you,” She offers and he nods. Viv. And then it’s almost like an immediate switch; how she rocks back on her heels for a moment, looking away from him to one of Wendover’s low rows of businesses and houses. “And thanks again for
playing along. I wouldn’t’ve done that if I had another option.” She sounds almost apologetic and Bucky rejects the unspoken apology with a wave of his own hand, a shake of his head.
“Anytime,” he assures, before amending the statement. “Well, maybe not anytime but if you need a bailout I’m not
it doesn’t bother me.” Viv nods, and he takes her in a little bit. The pinkened state of her cheeks and tip of her nose from the December air, and the progressive softening of her features.
She’s not readable, at least not in any way he understands quite yet. But she’s not stiff either, or rigid. The only other time he’s ever gotten some kind of read on her was when she’d breezed past him with two other pilots to go greet Veal with a “What took you so long?” and a smirk that reminded him of just about every other pilot he’d met, including himself. Maybe she didn’t have sharp edges, but she wasn’t shy or meek about anything.
She’s not shy or meek now either. Maybe comfortable, which feels like some kind of reward for him.
“I might give some of mine the heads up on that,” she admits. “If you don’t mind. Some of them are too shy about that kind of thing and don’t know how to ask.” It doesn’t sound like a complete thought, more like she had more to say but is withholding it. He decides not to pry into it.
“I don’t mind,” he agrees, instead. They lapse into silence for a moment, stiff with that uncomfortably frank knowledge that, yeah, this isn’t the first time any of them had been followed around. Bucky decides, quickly, that he doesn’t like it: the silence and the knowledge. He can do something about both, thankfully enough. “So can I keep walking you back or do you plan on leaving me in the dust?” Viv makes a noise, somewhere between amused and disbelieving.
“Yeah you caught me, I was planning on running for the hills ‘till you opened your mouth.”
“Yeesh, am I that bad of a husband?”
“Well I wouldn’t know. You promoted yourself pretty quick — and it still doesn’t count.” She walks towards him, and then brushes past, and he turns on his heel to follow her, falling in step pretty easily.
“I’m taking that as a ‘No, Bucky, you’re great and also terribly funny. An absolute catch.’” That makes her snort again and she reaches to lightly shove at him, but he doesn’t move much as she shakes her head.
“Sure, Bucky. Whatever helps you sleep at night.”

Tumblr media
Still awake, baby?
Fuck.
You screamed into your pillow upon reading Bucky’s text. It was quarter to midnight and you couldn’t sleep, especially not after Bucky told you that he wanted to make the relationship official.
It’d only been three months and you felt like he was moving too fast. And when he promised that he would find a way to snatch your heart the old-fashioned way? You wanted to explode because obviously, he already did.
But you weren’t going to say that to someone who already had a huge ego (and cock, too).
You composed yourself and typed in your reply, throwing your phone to your side after sending it.
Yeah. Why are you still up tho?
Not even a minute later and your phone began to ring. You sat up on your bed and squeezed your pillow, hating how Bucky had such an effect on you. Jesus, what are you, a high school student?!
You stared at his name on your screen before swiping and accepting the call.
“What’s up?” You answered as calmly as you could.
Bucky’s low chuckle sounded so fucking sexy that you had to bite your lower lip to prevent a moan from escaping.
“Still working. Can’t concentrate though, I keep remembering how you looked like with my cock in your mouth.”
You exhaled through your nose, “Jesus, you’re insatiable.” You said.
“Only for you, baby. You know that.” He said and your heart did a little somersault inside your chest.
“Don’t stay up too late, you have an early meeting tomorrow, right?” You asked, trying to change the topic because if you didn’t, you were sure how things would go.
Bucky let out another chuckle, “Yeah, yeah. I’ll just finish signing some papers and then I’m off to bed.”
You hummed and laid back down on the bed. It was completely silent but it wasn’t awkward. You heard the shuffling of paper on Bucky’s end, followed by the squeaking of a chair.
“You still there?” Bucky asked.
“Mhmm, you done?” You asked back.
“A few more papers left, baby. Can you wait ‘til I finish?”
There was something about talking to Bucky on the phone like this, so casual and so...mundane. It felt natural and comfortable, to think that this was the first phone conversation you had with him. He only sent you texts previously so this was new, but you had to admit, you loved it.
Bucky heard you yawning and let out a soft laugh. He sounded sleepy too when he spoke, “Almost done.” He reassured.
“Let’s have dinner tomorrow.” He added.
“Yeah, okay. As long as it’s not in the same restaurant we went to after my promotion.” You groaned at the memory.
Bucky snorted, “We’re banned there, babe. Even if I wanted to go back there, they wouldn’t allow it.” He said.
“No shit, Sherlock. We got caught in their bathroom, of course they’ll ban us.” You huffed out.
“I was looking forward to dessert, you know.” You pouted.
“I got my dessert though.” You could hear Bucky’s smug smirk through the phone.
“Are you done?” Bucky whispered into your ear as he placed an arm on the back of the booth.
You shivered at his voice and nodded, grabbing your champagne and drinking it in one go.
“I promised you something, didn’t I? That I’ll give you something right before dessert? Meet me in the bathroom in five. Again, don’t be late.”
And with that, Bucky slid out of the booth and adjusted his suit before leaving for the bathroom. You clutched your heart and waved at the waiter who passed by, requesting for a refill and downing it before following Bucky.
You adjusted the black dress that Bucky bought you, you were surprised at how perfect the fit was. The lovely dress though, made you uncomfortable because of its length and the fact that Bucky still had your panties with him was making you feel even more conscious.
You were immediately pulled into the men’s bathroom as soon as you got there. Bucky tugged you into one of the cubicles and wasted no time to bend you over, lifting your skirt up to squeeze your ass.
“I knew I picked the right dress, you look good enough to eat.” Bucky grunted as he unbuckled his belt.
You moaned and pressed your palms against the door, pushing out your ass towards Bucky until you felt him line his tip up to your entrance. In one swift move, Bucky bottomed out and didn’t give you enough time to adjust.
It was fast and violent, the way Bucky fucked you inside that stall. Both of you were too caught up in the pleasure to even hear the commotion happening outside.
“Not gonna last long, Bucky...” you whimpered, feeling your legs tremble.
You’d been on edge the entire time, having been denied your orgasm earlier. And Bucky kept on squeezing your thigh teasingly during dinner, palm always inching higher until it settled close to your bare mound.
Of course, you wouldn’t last long!
“I know, baby.” Bucky said, sucking the skin on your exposed shoulder as he continued to fuck you from behind.
Once done with the sex escapade, the both of you were welcomed by the restaurant’s manager with a disapproving (and scarred) look on his face.
You blushed at the memory, “Let’s not do that again, please?” You said.
Bucky laughed, “Fine, fine. But dinner tomorrow, okay?”
You yawned at the same time you hummed, “Just dinner.”
“Wholesome dinner.” He confirmed. “Alright, I’m done with work. Sleep now, baby.” He cooed and you nodded even though Bucky couldn’t see you.
You heard footsteps and then the sound of the door closing shut.
“Good night, baby.”
“Hmm, good night, Bucky.”
-
To say you were giddy the next day was an understatement. You were on cloud nine after having a phone conversation with Bucky last night. You even greeted Janet the snitch a very good morning when you shared the elevator with her.
You entered your floor and offered everyone a smile, but you also noticed that they seemed to be preoccupied talking to each other.
“What’s up?” You asked Martha and the other girls who were huddled together.
“Haven’t you heard?” She asked. “Sophia shared an elevator ride with Mister Barnes earlier. He called a flower shop, asked for their most expensive bouquet and then went on to make dinner reservations at an elite restaurant!”
You paled at the discovery and cleared your throat, “And that’s a big deal because?”
Martha snickered, “Girl, we’re talking about James Barnes here, a rich and eligible bachelor. It is a big deal. And ugh, I wonder who the lucky lady is! What I’d do to be her.” Martha dreamily said.
“Do you think it’s an employee here? Fuck, I’d be so envious if that girl happens to be working here!” Sophia added.
“Is that even allowed? Sounds pretty scandalous to me.” Kate chimed in.
“Oh my god. Remember the pantry incident that Janet reported? What if that was Mister Barnes and his girl? Damn, that’s juicy. It’d be horrifying if they get caught.” Kate added.
Your head felt light-headed at all the information that was going on. Hearing their conversations felt like a bucket of iced water was being poured on you. It was like a moment of a major realization.
Shit, what has gotten into you, getting all tangled up in this mess? Damn you, Tinder!
Even if Bucky agreed to take things slow, you realized that it wouldn’t really help. If news got out that you were dating the CEO of your company, you’d still receive some backlash for it.
Maybe making it official wasn’t the right thing to do. At least, not yet.
“Ladies, gossip time is over.” You announced and tried to stay calm. “And speaking of Barnes, I need to submit a report.”
-
You nervously knocked on Bucky’s door, hoping that he was back from his early morning meeting. You could hear him talking inside and thought that maybe he was busy.
“Come in.” He called before you could even turn around.
Slowly, you opened the door and slipped inside his office. Bucky was on his chair, talking to someone over the phone. When he saw that it was you, he quickly put his phone on mute and smiled.
“Yes, baby? What do you need?” He asked softly.
Goddammit! Bucky was surely getting used to that pet name. Initially, he’d only call you that in the throes of pleasure. But somehow, Bucky began to use it so casually that it made you nervous. What if he slipped and called you that during a meeting, in front of everyone?
You hated how Bucky was becoming soft and gentle around you, well, except maybe when he was in a certain mood. It was confusing the hell out of you. But you also enjoyed being the only one to witness his soft side.
Was his offer to make things official because he truly liked you or was the fucking that good to make him want to commit all of a sudden?
“I uhh, I think I’ll just come back later if you’re busy.” You stammered.
Bucky held up a finger and then unmuted his phone, “Hey, something important came up. I’ll call you again later.” He said and quickly ended the call before turning to you.
“You know I’m never too busy for you.” He said, his eyes the softest you’d ever seen.
There goes your heart.
“I think...” you trailed, not sure how you were going to say it.
Bucky raised his eyebrows at you, urging for you to continue. You heaved out a deep sigh. Your hands balled into fists at your side as you walked closer to his desk.
“Can we raincheck on the dinner tonight?” You asked.
Bucky frowned, “Why?”
You shrugged, “No reason.”
“Lie to me one more time and I’ll have you on my lap for some spanking.”
How the hell does Bucky do that? Become all sweet and soft and then rough and dominating all of a sudden?!
You squeezed your thighs together because the image of Bucky’s hand landing on your ass was doing things to you. You willed yourself not to give in, you came here for a reason.
“There are rumors about you. Someone heard you making dinner reservations and now everyone’s talking about it. I just...” you paused to check Bucky’s reaction but as usual, you couldn’t read his face.
“Maybe making this official isn’t...the right thing to do.”
Bucky pushed himself up from the chair slowly and stalked towards you. Was he mad? Fuck, you hoped he wasn’t. When he reached you, his hand came up to brush your cheek with his knuckles.
“What do you want then?” He asked.
Shit, you never actually thought about it. What do you want? Keep things casual between you and Bucky? Completely stop whatever it was that was going on between the two of you?
“I don’t know.” You shrugged.
“I like you.” Bucky stated and stepped back. “You’re intelligent and you don’t take shit from anyone, myself included. When you said you wanted to take things slow, I agreed to it. Hence, the flowers and dinner. Now that I’m giving it to you, you still don’t want it.”
Bucky’s livid. He was composed but the way his jaw tensed as he spoke was enough proof that he was mad, really mad. It’s his calm demeanor despite being angry that somehow scared you. The calm before the storm. What the storm was going to be? You didn’t know and honestly, you weren’t sure whether it was something that you even want to find out.
Maybe you were being confusing or indecisive but only because things happened too quickly for you to even properly process it. To think that you addressed your concerns last night, you actually that Bucky understood where your feelings were stemming from. However, it seemed to have gone over his head.
“Bucky, I don’t think you’re getting my point here.” You explained, tucking your hair behind your ear.
“If you heard what your employees have been saying about you and your...girl, you’d understand.” You said and placed your hands on your hips.
Bucky made a face, “Then make me understand. What did you hear?” he asked.
“We already talked about this last night! They’d think that the promotion was given to me because we fucked! That’s going to taint my image for the rest of my life.” You huffed out.
Bucky rubbed his face with his hand as he paced back and forth, “They’re idiots if they think of that. What do you want me to do? Give a detailed presentation why I decided to promote you? Go through your evaluation one by one? He sarcastically said.
“Oh my god, Bucky. You really don’t get it, do you?” You let out a humorless laugh.
He shrugged, “You’re confusing the hell out of me. Just tell me what the hell you want to happen.”
“Maybe I just want keep things professional.” You blurted out in the spur of the moment.
You didn’t mean it. You so didn’t mean it. Fuck. You word vomitted and now you were going to regret it.
Something in Bucky ticked, you saw it. He approached you until he was towering over your frame. It was intimidating to say the least, the way Bucky stared down at you with a blank expression on his face.
“What if I don’t want to?” Bucky asked, his eyes looking down at your lips for a quick second before moving back up to your eyes.
“I wasn’t asking for your permission.” you retorted and you’re not sure why.
Bucky exhaled through his nose and this time, you could read his face. He was fuming.
“I told you, you’re mine.” He said through gritted teeth.
The tension in the air was thick. The close proximity was making you dizzy, Bucky was so close that his scent was invading your senses. His jaw was clenched tightly as he looked down at you with piercing eyes and you were so tempted to just grab his face and kiss him and tell him that you liked him too.
But of course, your pride just had to be in the way.
“You don’t own me, Bucky. I am my own person.”
Another word vomit. You were Bucky’s the moment he laid his hands on you and you liked it.
Bucky inhaled and shrugged, loosening up before taking a step back. “So you want to keep it professional, huh?”
No.
“Yes.”
Bucky nodded, “You’re lying. I know you are. But okay then, professional it is. Let’s see how long you can keep lying to yourself.”
You watched Bucky walk back to his desk, sitting down on his chair with his arms crossed over his wide chest. His face was void of any emotion all of a sudden, he didn’t even look angry anymore and you hated how you couldn’t seem to figure him out.
“Anything else you’d like to discuss?” he asked, the professional tone of his voice sending chills down your spine, but not in a good way.
You slightly nodded, placing a folder on top of his desk before backing away. “It’s this month’s report.”
“Okay. You’re dismissed.” He casually said, grabbing the folder and skimming through your report as if you weren’t standing right in front of him.
You felt a pang of pain hit you right in the heart when he looked up at you questioningly, as if he was wondering why the fuck you still haven’t left his office. At that moment, you wanted to take back all the things you said and just give in to your damn feelings.
But would you really let your career nosedive just to be with Bucky? You weren’t sure if you were ready for that.
You straightened up and maintained a calm demeanor, “That’s all. Thanks, Bucky.”
“That’s Mister Barnes for you.”

Chapter Twenty: The Recruits
March 18, 1943
In the two months following the nurses’ success with the serum, Camp Lehigh had nearly tripled in its inhabitants. Throughout their research and training, the five women were surrounded by fuddy-duddy sergeant majors and their crotchety commanders, with Agent Carter as their only equal; by the end of January, hundreds of recruits were being shipped in. The base seemed to be teeming with fresh-faced boys who thought not of the unforgiving grip of death, but of the blazing glory of victory— the gore and trauma of war meant little to them, but Lottie knew that she would have an intimate relationship with the horrors of war.
Sometimes all she dreamt of was blood. Blood on her hands, on her white dress, and oozing in puddles beneath her feet; the crimson color seemed to stain every inch of her skin, streaking her pale flesh with a sickeningly deep red. She told no one about her dreams because they seemed so foolish to her. Lottie hadn’t experienced a day in fieldwork, and here she was having these nightmares about the gore of war.
The ambient sounds of Camp Lehigh drew her out of her thoughts and grounded her.
Lottie was standing alone, rather dazedly, outside of the nurses’ barracks, observing all the commotion surrounding the recruits. She was still getting used to the chaotic environment that unfolded around her; everywhere she looked, there were lines of marching soldiers, followed hotly by shouting commanders, or trucks careening around buildings, as if always running late for some rendezvous. Gone were the days of picnicking in the grass and basking in the sun— the base was now all hustle and bustle, with little time for leisure.
All the activity had thrown a wrench into her combat training; Agent Carter had been training her on an individual basis with both firearms and knives, but the soldiers now needed more training than she did. Lottie had become more than proficient in the use of her M1911, which left her wanting to learn more. On the advice of Agent Carter, she’d taken up the KA-BAR and they had begun training with the knife only a few weeks prior. She was more than a little disappointed by the abrupt end to their training, but Lottie understood that training the men who would be doing the actual fighting was the higher priority. The one saving grace of Camp Lehigh was that the base was outfitted with two obstacle courses for physical training so the nurses could continue their exercises each morning. Although their combat training was put on hold, they could continue preparing their bodies for the stress of war.
A distinctly male voice interrupted her train of thought— was that a Brooklyn accent she heard?
“Hey sugar! You rationed?”
Lottie blinked for a moment and looked to her right. A group of men stood outside their own barracks, sharing a pack of cigarettes. She easily identified the man who’d spoken by the way he smiled at her; it was the same charming, lopsided grin that she’d seen on Bucky’s face countless times. His brilliantly blond hair caused a tug at her heartstrings; it was almost the same shade as Steve’s. That’s where the resemblance stopped, though; his eyes were a chestnut brown and his build was sturdier.
Lottie didn’t move from her spot, “Is that your way of asking if a lady’s got a fella waiting for her back home?”
The soldier’s grin only seemed to grow at the sound of her own Brooklyn accent, “A Brooklyn gal, eh? A woman after my own heart. What’s your name, doll?”
“I’m Lottie Green. But that’s Lieutenant Green to you, Private.” She smirked, relishing in her title. The year before, Congress had authorized the promotion of Army nurses to the ranks of Second Lieutenant, granting them positions of power in a largely male environment.
The soldier ambled over to her, flicking the ashes from the butt of his cigarette.
“Ah, so you’re one of those girls they hired to patch us up, then? I always knew there’d be choirs of angels when I died, but I didn’t know they’d send ‘em to fix us up when we’re wasting away.” He was a flirt, that was for sure, but she felt a pang of annoyance at his belittling of her profession
She wasn’t just some ‘girl’ who was shipped out to slap Band-Aids on his scratches and send him on his way with a pat on the head. She’d spent the last year of her life dedicated to formulating the perfect Super Soldier Serum. Lottie was a woman— a powerful woman who would one day hold the lives of so many men in her hands.
Lottie mustered up a wry smile, “While I haven’t got a fella back home, Private, a medic tent isn’t exactly ideal for courtship, is it?”
Without waiting for a response, she departed and made her way toward the obstacle course that was currently in use. Dr. Erskine had requested that the nurses of Project Rebirth be present for some of the recruits’ training sessions since they would be the best opportunities to scout out candidates for America’s first Super Soldier. These candidates would not only need to be physically capable but also morally incorruptible. An aspect of the serum that was discussed briefly was how it had amplified Schmidt’s already malicious personality; if they made the same mistake by administering it to a man of morally questionable character, they could have another failure on their hands.
When Lottie neared the obstacle course, she caught the tail end of Colonel Phillips’ speech to this batch of recruits.
“—but every army starts with one man. At the end of this week, we will choose that man. He will be the first in a new breed of Super Soldiers.”
Lottie barely had time to glance at the recruits who were lined up a handful of yards away from her. A clipboard had been thrust into her hands, stacked with papers that listed the soldiers’ names, dates of birth, and measurements. She scanned the pages, barely registering any information due to the sheer amount of it; it was too overwhelming to process properly.
“I heard Colonel Phillips has taken a real liking to Gilmore Hodge,” Gladys whispered, shuffling her papers.
Betty made a disapproving noise, “Agent Carter socked that guy in the kisser. No way in hell he’s our guy.”
“I agree!” Mary piped up, “His moral character is real atrocious.”
Nancy seemed to be torn, “He is the most promising recruit thus far. Sure, he’s gotta work on his manners, but gosh, even his measurements set him apart from the rest.”
Lottie hummed in thought and finally looked up to watch the recruits in action, her eyes narrowed. For the most part, the soldiers got through the net climbing efficiently and descended the other side with ease, but a particular recruit was struggling to get a sure footing in the netting. Her heart started pounding in her ears— she knew that build, that stature. It couldn’t be, he’d been rejected at the enlistment. Sure enough, the soldier lost his footing and fell with his other foot still caught in the ropes.
Lottie’s breath caught in her throat as she stared at the flushed face of one of her childhood best friends. In the distance, she could hear a sergeant berating him for his clumsiness, but her attention could not be torn away from his face. She was at a loss as to what to do; he obviously hadn’t seen her but she couldn’t call out to him to get his attention, as that would land him in more trouble than he was already in.
“Poor guy,” Mary murmured, wincing in sympathy. It seemed that she’d also noticed the trouble that Steve had been having.
“Yeah,” Lottie replied lamely, biting at her lip in anxious thought.
What would she even say to him if he saw her? Would he even acknowledge her? She knew she’d just about die if she had to undergo a silent treatment from Steve. But she deserved it, she was sure. There wasn’t a day that had gone by where she didn’t think of her boys back home. She often found herself lying in bed late at night, staring at the ceiling and listening to the breathing patterns of the other nurses in the barracks. Lottie would roll her lucky penny between her fingers and think of her best friends back home. Were they asleep? Or out at the dance hall again, trying to woo some women into a couple of dates for the next night? She prayed nightly for their safety; their safekeeping. It was a fool’s prayer, she knew— it was a war, after all. But that never stopped her from begging God on high to protect her most beloved friends.
The commotion of the obstacle course had died down, but the yells of the sergeants had not died down; it seemed that they were to continue their training elsewhere.
Betty noticed Lottie’s lost look, “They’re having ‘em run the trail.” She gestured to the tree line where they would usually do their morning runs.
Gladys looked over her clipboard, “I think it’d be best if we head back to the mess hall and grab a bite to eat. We can talk all of this,” she gestured to their clipboards, stacked high with papers, “once we’ve all got full stomachs and clear minds. I hope you all took notes, ‘cause I sure did!”
Lottie was silent on the way to the mess hall, still reeling from the fact that Steve had somehow been recruited for the military. There had to have been some mistake; he’d most likely spend more time in her medic tent than on the battlefield. Running into battle would have him hospitalized even before an enemy could manage to hit him.
They sat in their usual spot at the back of the mess hall, at a table in the corner that had been pushed up against a wall; it kept them out of the way and allowed them a sense of privacy from the other staff members. Lottie absentmindedly peeled at an orange while she listened to the conversation of her friends.
“If we can’t have Hodge for the serum, I think Johnson might be a promising guy!”
Betty laughed, “Do you really think that or do you just like the way he looks in his fatigues, Mary?”
“Gosh, I just think they bring out the green in his eyes! Either way, he’s certainly got the build for it.”
“He’s such a knucklehead, though. He couldn’t figure out the proper way to hold his rifle while he went under the barbed wire. He was practically dragging it through the mud by its strap.” Betty rolled her eyes, unimpressed with the performances of most of the men during training.
There was some continued discussion on the topic, but it was interrupted by the entrance of dozens of soldiers. They needed no introduction, as the sounds of their hoots and hollers, as well as the aroma of their body odor, heralded their arrival at the mess hall. Lottie shot to her feet, unable to stop herself from searching the sea of men for a scrawny man with too much pluck for his own good. The men milled about as they grabbed trays of food and seated themselves, loudly conversing about the training they’d just experienced.
Finally, Lottie’s eyes locked with those of a scrawny blond guy who looked as if he’d just seen a ghost. He was all the way at the other end of the mess hall, but that didn’t matter, she rushed to him as quickly as she could. She so desperately wanted to hug him before he could turn and run from her. She knew that her silly display was surely catching the attention of other soldiers, but she couldn’t quite bring herself to care; she hadn’t seen one of her best friends in over a year, dammit! She walked quickly between the tables to where he stood by the food line.
“Stevie,” Lottie choked out, crushing him in a tight hug. Tears threatened to escape her eyes, but she refused to make a scene in front of half of the recruits.
“Lottie I—” Steve began, “I dunno what to say. Why are you here? Why did you lie?”
He asked the questions with such earnest bewilderment, with sincere sorrow that nearly destroyed Lottie. He didn’t seem angry with her at all; he was instead deeply hurt, and it was all because of her. When she pulled away from their embrace, she saw the pain in his eyes and recognized it— it was the same pain she had felt when thinking of Steve and Bucky, praying for their safety.
Lottie was becoming acutely aware of the attention they were attracting but that was the least of her concerns at the moment. If Colonel Phillips caught wind of their little embrace, he would surely berate her about relationships with the soldiers, as he couldn’t fathom the idea of a platonic relationship between a nurse and one of his men. She would deal with that situation at a later time. At that moment, Lottie knew that an apology and explanation were long overdue. She planned on apologizing to him sincerely in private, but she knew that an explanation could not wait.
She grabbed Steve’s wrist and pulled him towards the table at the back of the hall, “Please trust me, Steve. I can explain everything, but I’m gonna need their help.” Lottie jerked her head in the direction of the other nurses, “What I did was real crummy of me, I know, and I’ll apologize over and over until the day I die, but I promise that it needed to be done. The girls over here will help me explain it all so you can understand.”
“Well, who do we have here?” Betty questioned as they approached, arching a carefully plucked brow.
Steve awkwardly shifted his weight and shoved his hands in his pockets, obviously intimidated by her steady gaze and cool demeanor, “Steve Rogers, ma’am.”
Mary’s eyes lit up, “One of Lottie’s Brooklyn boys! Now do tell me, where is Private Barnes? Because I absolutely must meet the man that our Lottie is so infa—”
Before she could finish her sentence, Gladys kicked her shin under the table and answered the question for Steve, “I’ve looked through every file Dr. Erskine has given to us and there’s no Private Barnes here.”
Lottie shot Gladys a grateful smile, albeit a weak one. She cleared her throat and addressed the group of women before her, “I promised Steve here that I’d explain why I fell off the face of the Earth for a solid year, but I’ll need your help filling in all the details.”
It took nearly an hour to catch Steve up on all the events of the past year. The nurses gave him as much information as they could, though there was certain classified information that they were privy to— the formula for the Super Soldier Serum —but could not be shared with anyone outside of Project Rebirth. Steve interrupted regularly to pose questions about different aspects of their research, obviously invested in all the work they’d done for Dr. Erskine and Mr. Stark. When they recounted their experiences testing the prototype serum on various tissue samples, he went a sickly shade of green, so they quickly ended that train of thought. They glossed over the details of how they finished the serum and their discovery of how Vita-Ray Radiation affected its ingredients. His brow seemed to furrow exponentially with every scientific term used
“And that’s the skinny on what we’ve been up to for the past year,” Gladys finished, holding back a giggle at Steve’s overwhelmed facial expression.
“Thank you, ladies,” Lottie smiled and rose from her seat, gesturing for Steve to follow, “Steve and I are gonna step outside for a moment.” She led him across the mess hall and outside; they came to a stop after they rounded the corner of the building. She stood against the wall, fidgeting with the hem of her jacket sleeve.
“Stevie, I owe you an apology. After the attacks I just knew that the world would go to shit,” Lottie felt her eyes start to water, “and well— it’s my job as a nurse to save lives, y’know? I couldn’t just stay home and twiddle my thumbs while everyone else went to take care of our boys overseas. And I know Bucky made me promise not to and all that, but I’d already enlisted. I knew if I told him the truth, we’d fight, and I’d have left you two on a really sour note, which isn’t what I wanted at all.”
“So, you decided it would be better to lie about going to your parents’ for Christmas and leave the two of us wondering for months?” Steve’s tone wasn’t scathing but the question still cut deep.
Lottie sniffled and knew that there was little she could do to hold back the tide of tears that would surely start flowing, “I was being horribly selfish; I knew it would hurt the both of you but I was just so afraid and uncertain about it all. I knew you two would get real concerned for me and I just didn’t want that. Plus, you have to understand, Stevie, when I enlisted, they offered me a position in a high-level government organization. I couldn’t tell anyone about my whereabouts or where I would be going— all I could say was that I would be training for the Nurse Corps. It wasn’t fully my choice to keep these things from you and Bucky; it would’ve been risky to tell anyone about the SSR or what I would be doing for them. I know you two would’ve been good about keeping it a secret, but I was still so afraid, Steve. I didn’t want to let the SSR down, so I guess that meant I had to let you two down instead.” She stared at her shoes, letting the tears roll down her cheeks and fall to the dirt below.
“Thank you for telling me the truth, Lottie. It really hurt me when I realized you weren’t coming back. I understand where you were coming from, though I don’t agree with what you did. I forgive you, but Bucky— he, well,” Steve shook his head sadly, “You should’ve seen him when he got back from bootcamp and you weren’t at the station, Lottie. Worried out of his mind, he was. I’d written to your folks a month or so earlier; it was mid-January so I knew something was up. They told me you’d joined the Corps, but didn’t know where you’d been sent. I told him everything I’d learned and he hasn’t been the same since; he was always on edge. Even the night before he was shipped out to England, when we went out with Bonnie and Connie—”
“England?” Lottie’s voice was weak with disbelief. She shouldn’t have been surprised, he was going to be deployed at some point, after all. Somehow, it still hit her like a punch to the gut.
She held onto the hope that they were at least exchanging letters to check in with each other. “Have you kept in contact with him at least?”
“I didn’t think to get an address before he left.” Steve muttered, digging the toe of his boat into the dirt in front of him.
“Dammit,” Lottie hissed and wiped away hot tears that continued to stream from her eyes. She was utterly helpless and could do nothing about it; she had no way of contacting Bucky to make sure he was safe. For all she knew, he could be one of those men bleeding in a medic tent— lying limply in a cot that was not his, thousands of miles away from home. She could only hope that he had a kind nurse that would wipe the sweat from his brow and murmur soothing sounds that would remind him of home.
At Camp Lehigh, Lottie was constantly reminded of home. She saw Bucky in every soldier she met, whether it be through their personality, charm, or looks, they all served as a reminder of him. When it came down to it, neither Massachusetts nor Brooklyn was home to her— it was only Bucky that she could truly call home.
And as their time apart continued to drag on, she realized that she was beginning to feel terribly homesick.

Another day another dollar, right? One more day of work before a long holiday weekend away from the office and away from the stresses of life. It was almost worth the salary in more ways than one. Yes I was comfortable now that I'd been promoted but it also allowed me to move into a new apartment over the last two months. Apartment 25, right next door to a very handsome neighbor who id only ever had the pleasure of seeing once.
It was no more than a passing in the hall when I was still moving in. He had nodded his head followed by a soft hello as I was coming up the stairs. My door was propped open and half my furniture was sitting around the kitchen inside the door. I had noticed him glance in, a small smile coming to his face as he dug his gloved hand into his jeans for his house key. The only reason I knew he existed outside of that was the fact that he left his TV on at night. But I knew how that was. Some type of noise to make a lonely apartment seem less empty.
I wanted so badly to go introduce myself, to say hello or invite him over for dinner but it never felt right. I was the new neighbor after all and no one else had made an attempt at introducing themselves either. Besides, I wasn't even completely moved in yet. Two months and I still had boxes strewn about, some filled with books, some filled with kitchen utensils I hadn't needed quite yet. In all actuality it was a mess still but I was working on it. Something I would be fixing during this long holiday weekend.
This is what was on my mind as I buzzed into the main door. Then his smile flashing behind my eyes as I walked up the flight of stairs to stand in front of my apartment. Then the thought faded for a moment. It was one sigh after another as I dug into my bag for my key, a grumble under my breath as they shifted under my wallet. It was already a long day, and now this?
"For fucks sake."
I complained, finally grabbing them in my hand but stabbing myself in the finger rather than retrieving them. I pulled my hand out quickly, hissing at the feeling as I shook my hand out.
"Damnit!"
I furrowed my brow before putting my mouth to my finger. Then I heard his door click. I breathed deeply before shaking my head and reaching back in my bag for my keys. When he stepped out of his door I offered a disingenuous smile.
"Hey 25."
He said and I stood upright, confusion across my features as I stared at the number plate on my door.
"Hey, 23...?"
I said back, looking over my shoulder as he made his way quickly down the stairs. I watched as he opened the main door at the bottom, looking at him like a deer in headlights as he smiled and nodded before disappearing down the street. I just stood there for a moment, perplexed, arm still in my bag but no longer focused on the task at hand. What a strange interaction. Then the door across the hall made a noise, shaking me from my thoughts. I got to work getting my keys out properly this time, without hurting myself, and unlocking my door before they made it outside. Time to get to work.
°°°°°°°°°
When I woke up this morning I knew I should've immediately gone back to bed. Who knew Saturdays could actually be shit. It started with me ripping the collar of one of my favorite shirts while trying to get dressed. Then it was me spraying myself in the face with water trying to do the dishes. And amongst every other little thing like dropping books and trinkets and tripping over boxes on the floor, the air conditioner went out. I had promptly called the landlord but he said he couldn't get anyone to replace it until Tuesday given the holiday weekend. Just my luck.
I had almost thought about giving up but I wasn't that kind of person. Instead I dug out a box fan, propped the front door open and kept it on high for the majority of the afternoon. Yeah I was sweaty trying to unpack and fix my living room but it was worth it. I was gonna make this day better if it killed me. Now I was stood on a bar stool, couch pushed into the middle of the room, trying to hang a few pictures. It was a struggle getting the one on the far part of the wall but I was making it work. One grunt and complain at a time.
"Need a hand with that 25?"
I heard from the door, scaring me and making the stool wobble. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I steadied myself against the wall. I closed my eyes and sighed out in relief.
"No thanks 23 I got this."
I called back, recognizing his voice before reaching back over and trying to hang it again. I could hear soft footsteps behind me for a moment but it didn't really matter, the door was open, if he wanted to come in he was more than welcome. Maybe he could give me a hand. And maybe I was overestimating myself. The next second I was losing my footing and on my way to the floor. I screamed as the stool came out from under me, the picture smashing to the floor. I expected to hit the floor after it but instead I had landed in someone's arms, looking up to a smirking neighbor, wide eyes and scared
"Sure you don't need some help there 25?"
He asked again, a little cocky. I just stared at him. My heart was knocking at my rib cage trying to escape and I was still trying to come to terms with the fact that I could've just hurt myself severely or even died. But I didn't. Because 25 saved me.
"I guess not anymore."
I blurted out in a panic, realizing that my interior design dreams had just been crunched into pieces against the hardwood. He let out a soft laugh before walking out from behind the couch and placing me flat on my feet.
"You okay?"
He asked and I nodded, frowning at my less than handy work on the ground. The stool was laid on top of the frame, glass everywhere, and the picture itself torn in two.
"Body yes, ambitions no."
I sent him a defeated look and we both laughed. I shook my head, pinching the bridge of my nose.
"Thanks for saving me 23. Without you I definitely would have had to take a trip to the ER."
I said through a nervous laugh. He looked taken aback for a second before placing his hand gently at my back.
"You look like you've had one hell of a day."
He noted and I looked down at myself before rolling my eyes.
"So it's obvious?"
I asked and he smiled, nodding slowly.
"Just a little bit."
My gaze followed his hand as he tucked some of the hair that had fallen out of my ponytail behind my ear.
"Well I guess for an official first impression I chose to big or go home."
I joked
"You always this charismatic?"
He quipped back and I sent him a look.
"You mean in terms of needing assistance?"
He shook his head in amusement.
"If that's how you wanna take it, sure."
I rolled my eyes playfully.
"No actually. Normally I am very poised and carefully thought out. Today is just not my day."
He looked at me for a moment like he was trying to figure me out or come up with something to say.
"Well I think I'd like to meet poised and carefully thought out."
He said and I sighed out a laugh.
"Is that an offer for a date 23?"
He smiled widely at me.
"James."
"Bucky!"
"Yes!"
He said quickly, getting progressively louder. My eyes went wide as he closed his, shaking his head and rubbing the back of his neck.
"Jesus I'm not usually this awkward."
I smiled at him, placing my hand at his shoulder, him looking at me in a lost puppy kind of way. Then I noticed the chain tucked under his shirt, looking down the the two outlines pressed against his chest. I drew my brows as I tugged it out, the warm metal laying in my hand as I ran my thumb over the dog tags. He just watched me intently.
"Sargent James Buchanan Barnes."
I nodded, looking up to him innocently. He had a small smile tugging at the corner of his lip but you'd miss it if you weren't looking for it.
"Well 23, I'd love to go on a date with you."
In a second his smile got bigger, tucking his tags back in his shirt after I let go of them.
"Guess we both made pretty good first impressions."
He said and I nodded, rubbing my hands together as we started walking towards the door.
"Oh, 25, I didn't catch your name."
He mentioned, stepping over the box fan and back into the hall. I smirked at him.
"You buy me a drink, 23, and it's yours."
He let out a short laugh, nodding as he turned his body towards his own apartment.
"Deal."

The Avengers Meeting (Maria Hill x Reader fic)

Word count: 1212
From the first day you had started at SHIELD, your goal was to be assigned to work with the Avengers. You knew it was most likely a long shot as there were many agents that have more experience than you, but it never hurt to have a goal to work towards. Last week was apparently the week in which your professional dreams came true when you stepped into your apartment to find Nick Fury sitting on your living room couch.
“How does such a talented agent such as yourself live in a dump like this?”
“Uhh...well, the cost of living downtown is higher than my paycheck can afford.”
“I see. You’re still a junior agent at SHIELD, is that right?”
“It is. I’ve always dreamed of working at SHIELD and it’s been great --” You stopped talking when Fury waved his hand at you.
“I already know how much you want to work for SHIELD. That’s not why I’m here. I’m here because I want you on the team that directly works with the Avengers.”
“No way, this can’t be happening.” You could not believe that Nick Fury himself, the man who had worked with not only Carol Danvers but also with Captain America and Black Widow, was asking you to work with them.
“Is that a no, or a yes?”
“Yes! I mean, yes, I would love to work with the Avengers! I’m so excited --”
“Okay, you start tomorrow.” Fury stood up and headed towards the door. “And don’t forget, the Avengers like to get up early. You’ll meet the rest of the team when you get to the Avengers base in the morning.”
-----
When you got to the Avengers base, you were surprised to see Maria Hill waiting at the top of the stairs. Even though you had only heard of her before, everyone who worked at SHIELD knew that she had worked with the Avengers on several missions.
“Agent (Y/N)! Follow me to your station.”
“Director Hill! I’m very excited to start working under you with the Avengers.” You didn’t get any further as you ran after Director Hill. You didn’t expect her to walk so fast, but you assumed it was part of what it took to be the director. The rest of the day went by in a blur as you were shown where you would be stationed, and you met the agents that you would be working with. You were very disappointed to learn that the Avengers didn’t stop by on a regular basis, but at least you had the opportunity to see them if they ever did stop by.
-----
Throughout the next few months of working on the team, you noticed that Director Hill was taking more notice of you whenever there was an assignment. Even though you still haven’t been given a “big” assignment yet, your performance reviews were at the top of the team. You didn’t have that many opportunities to talk with Director Hill personally, but you still managed to find out little details about her, such as the fact that she liked women and that she liked eating sour candy whenever she’s stressed. It wasn’t much to go on, but at least you got to know that your boss wasn’t a complete machine.
You didn’t know this, but Director Hill found you attractive, which made her more awkward around you than she was with other people. This did not go unnoticed with Steve and Thor, and they both tried getting her to ask you out.
“I believe you must tell her your true feelings for her, Maria.”
“Thor, I can’t do that. I’m her superior.”
“So promote her then! I don’t see what the problem is.”
“You know, back in my day, you could just ask her out to a dance.”
“No one does that anymore, Steve.” Maria huffed and walked away stiffly so she didn’t have to talk about her feelings for you. The two Avengers were left standing with their arms crossed and thinking about the ways that they could get the two of you together.
-----
You were busy with research when Steve quietly came up next to you and sat on your desk. “Doing research for the next mission, (Y/N)?”
“Yeah, I’m almost done.”
“I’m sure Director Hill will be pleased that you’ve finished your assignment so quickly.”
“What does Director Hill have to do with anything?”
“It’s obvious that she likes you. Go talk to her and tell her that she looks very good today.”
“Are you crazy? She’s my boss! And Maria Hill of all people! No way. There is just no way she likes me like that. The ice you were trapped in has messed up the way you think, Steve.”
“Now you sound like Bucky. But never mind that, just give her a compliment. What’s the worst thing she can do, glare at you?”
“That’s bad enough, Steve.” You took a stack of papers and marched off. It’s so like an Avenger, assuming that everyone likes them. Not everyone has the privilege of stepping out of a machine looking like a well-muscled god. The fact that Steve thought Maria could ever have a crush on you was laughable at best.
------
As usual, you were the first person to make it to the meeting. Since this new mission concerned the Avengers, Steve was there too. Punctuality is a major personality trait for both of you, and it showed whenever you had a meeting him involved. Director Hill had called the meeting, and sure enough, Maria walked in as soon as the digital clock turned 7:30 PM.
“How are you, (Agent (Y/N)? Steve?”
“You look nice tonight.” The words came out of your mouth sooner than you could stop, and both of your eyes widened.
“Uh-hmm, thank you, (Agent (Y/N).” Director Hill nodded and started walking rather quickly to the head of the table.
“Wait, are you blushing?”
“What? No!”
“Did I get the ever-stoic, hardcore, total badass Maria Hill to blush?”
“No...it’s the, uh, it’s the cold.”
“Huh. It’s cold. And not that I told you your face is absolutely adorable and that I bet the rest of you are too.”
Maria blushed harder as she crossed her arms across her chest. She opened and closed her mouth several times before trusting herself to speak. “N-no.” The crack in her voice was audible to even Steve, who snorted, causing Maria to blush even harder than before. “We should get back to work.”
“Or maybe, since it’s almost 8 PM, we can go to the bar down the street and cool off your face with a drink or two.”
“That seems to be a good idea.” You didn’t even see Natasha enter the room, but she looked like she had been standing there for a while.
“But we have a meeting to get to!” Maria still seemed hesitant to leave work so early, but with a slight nudge from the Avenger, she finally relented. “Fine. I’ll have one drink. We’re resuming the meeting at 6 AM sharp tomorrow morning. And I’m only drinking on a weekday because I’m feeling nice.”
“Whatever you say, boss lady.”
“Call me that again and I’ll kick your ass on the training mat next week.”

 he honestly doesn't hate it.
He usually loves wrapping his arms around a tiny Omega— Annie or Bucky or Peter— and feeling big and strong protecting them like that. Some days, he wonders if he should have been an Alpha instead.
But now, with Steve’s arm looped around his shoulders, and the larger Alpha tucking him boldly into his side, all Clint can feel is safe. And a little embarrassed.
Because it’s not like Steve decided to take him to a bar, like Tony did. Steve hadn’t stopped smiling as he drove them North, away from the city, and into Queens. It’s hot outside, so both men are wearing tank tops and shorts, with the windows rolled down and wind in their hair. Clint gives him an incredulous look as Citi Field comes into view.
“The fuck, Steve. You didn’t.”
Clint feels like an idiot. The entire backseat is filled with jerseys and hats and t-shirts and even a stupid foam finger. As he looks through them, he realizes a few are his own jerseys.
Clint feels like an idiot. The entire backseat is filled with jerseys and hats and t-shirts and even a stupid foam finger. As he looks through them, he realizes a few are his own jerseys.
“How—”
He gets a sheepish grin from Steve, “I had Bucky collect your Mets stuff. Like I said— I’m surprised you didn’t notice.”
“I mean
 I just
he already wears so much of my stuff, I didn’t
”
Steve just chuckles, giving Clint a clap on the shoulder, and he can feel the waves of amusement and affection through their bond.
And it doesn’t stop. All the way through the game, Clint floats on his Alpha’s joy. Even when they’re losing at the top of the 6th and on their fucking fourth string pitcher, with Steve screaming powerful strings of profanities, the constant wave of bright, fierce happiness never wavers.
They eat through six hot dogs, two soft pretzels, a half dozen beers between the two of them, and a serving of ice cream each. Clint blames it on the summer heat. Both of them are sweating and staggering a bit by the end of the game, so they decide to walk it off before heading home.
Clint lets himself be tucked back under Steve’s arm, and enjoys being led down the crowded streets of Queens, flooded with hundreds of drunk, angry fans. It’s amusing to see all the store fronts, overwhelmed with hungry customers, and the two of them keep walking until something out of the corner of Clint’s eye stops him.
“Hey,” he pulls on Steve’s sleeve, stopping them on the sidewalk, “hey, Steve. Oh my god, Steve. Do you think,” he points at the sign, “fuck, Steve, do you think they have dogs. Steve.”
The Alpha looks up, squinting at the sign for Tropical Pets Inc, “Uh, Clint. I think we’d be lucky to find something alive in there.”
Clint just snorts, “C’mon, Alpha,” and grabs Steve’s hand, heading for the less than spectacular looking pet store.
It’s dimly lit, smells like shit, and is deafeningly loud— but Clint is immediately in love with this little hole in the wall shop. Tall shelves section off the walls, leading them away from the entrance and further into the belly of the store, passing dozens of food options for birds, hamsters, dogs, cats, and pretty much anything else Clint can imagine.
Birds are screeching from cramped cages. Fish swim around small pools, and tanks hold all types of small mammals and amphibians. There’s even a small box of kittens sitting under a warming lamp.
None of this could have distracted Clint from the puppy, staring at him from inside a small play pen, tongue lolled out and tail wagging rapidly.
“Steve. Fuck, Steve. Do you see it?” Clint whispers, careful not to spook the adorable perfection of a dog.
There’s no response, because Steve is immediately dropping to his knees, holding out a few fingers for the dog to smell. It looks between them, as if deciding. Clint joins his Alpha on the floor, never taking his eyes off the dog, and calls out, “C’mere bud, c’mon. Who’s a good dog? Yeah? Who's a good dog?”
The dog ambles forward, bouncing on it’s paws, and jumps a bit to paint a long, slobbery kiss along Steve’s cheek. The giant Alpha sputters, falling backwards and wiping frantically as his face. Clint just praises the dog more, leaning forward to let it smell him before scratching along it’s head, behind it’s ears, and all the way down to it’s— his— belly.
“I’ve gotta have ‘im, Steve. Alpha, please, we gotta take ‘im home with us.”
“Clint—”
“Aw, c’mon Alpha. I’m home most days anyways, and I know Bucky and Annie are gonna love ‘im. They love dogs, I swear. Even Peter. I think I can convince Peter—”
“Clint.”
“— and I’m not sure about Tony, but I’m sure we could work on him. I’ve always thought Tony could use—”
“— Clint! Shut up, just for a second, okay? I’m not saying no.”
“You’re
” Clint is stunned, “you’re not saying no to me?”
Steve’s face softens and he reaches out to cup Clint’s cheek, “No, Beta. I fuckin’ love this dog. And guess what? I love you even more.”
“Damn. Does this mean we can get ‘im?”
“Yeah,” Steve stands to his feet, pulling Clint up with him, “let’s find an employee and then we’ll bring our dog home.”
“Our dog,” Clint repeats, stretching up to bring Steve into a chaste kiss. It’s just like before— all he can feel is joy and adoration thrumming through his bond. He whispers against Steve’s lips, “I like the sound of that. And I love you even more.”
---
An hour later, Steve and Clint are wrapped around each other on the loveseat in their living room, watching as their other packmates coo over their sweet dog. They affectionately named him Lucky, because— as Steve so accurately said— they were definitely lucky to find something alive in that pet store.
And when Clint starts to wax poetic, looking up into his Alpha’s eyes and remembering how terrified he was just months ago to even consider bonding with this man, he pulls Steve closer, mouthing gently along his bonding bites, and murmurs into his ear—
“I think I was lucky to find you, Alpha.”
Just as he expects, affection and joy meet him at the end of their bond.

Oh, Baby: Chapter One
A/N: Okay so I’ve literally had this in my drafts for the last...six months or so? And I figured I’d tweak it and edit and post it since I’ve been so AWOL on this site lately, and so that I can give you guys some new content from me.
Word Count: 3k+
Warnings: Heavy cursing. This chapter is pretty PG, talks of mental illness, unexpected pregnancy and contemplating abortion- but she doesnt go through with it. Smut to come. AND LOTS OF FLUFF TOO, I promise lol
Summary: After a drunken night, Y/N finds herself having to face the biggest decision of her life; is she ready for motherhood? And a better question, is Bucky Barnes, her long time friend and womanizer extraordinaire, ready for fatherhood? They’ll just have to go along for the ride and find out together. A Bucky Barnes x Plus Size Reader Story
Chapter 1/6: The Baby Woe’s and Oh No’s
You knew it.
You’d known something was off, different, changed.
You sit on your toilet, your world spinning as you attempt to wrap your mind around what was going on. Everything seems sludge like, too slow and too fast and not real.
You’re definitely going into shock, you point out to yourself. The catatonic kind. You’ve been staring at the bright, sunny lemon print of the shower curtain, your eyes focused but not seeing. Your elbows rest on your knees and your hands cover the entirety of your lower face.
At least you’re not crying anymore.
Nope, your body had moved past that-Maybe, it felt like the tears could start rolling again at anytime.
Oh god, what are you going to do?
Why, why, why?
Why you? You’d been a good person- well a decent person at least
You recycled and tipped more than twenty percent. Didnt vote for Trump and ate your vegetables.
And your life was just seeming to even out. You’d somehow landed your dream job a couple months back- every Wednesday night your voice could be heard on WNEX. You we’re making enough money to finally be comfortable- doing what you loved. Gaining a wide audience and wiggling your way into the industry. Your mind was so career oriented, so focused on your end goal that you’d never even considered something like this.
Throwing a big fat wrench in the gears.
One night, it had only been one stupid, drunken night. Hadn't you racked up enough karma coins to cover your ass for one fucking night?
Are you there god? It’s me, Y/N, and I really fucked up this time.
Wanda comes back into the tiled room a few minutes, her dark features soft and a colorful mug in her hand.
“Are you okay?” She gauges, gently, as she reaches out to you.
You snort and shrug, but accept the steaming cup from her anyway. You look down at the swirling, murky drink.
Wishing for just one moment that you could drown yourself in it.
“Look, babe, I know you’re dealing with some major shock right now- but maybe you should go lay down. We’ll figure it out later-” Wanda’s voice is even and you appreciate her being so calm and sure during all of this but you just can't process the situation enough to accept it.
You can't go lay down.
“Why not?” Wanda questions and you didn't realize you’d said that out loud, you hadn't even felt your mouth form the words.
Your head really is swimming. Disconnected from your body a little bit. You force yourself to take a drink of the tea as she gives you a more pointed look.
“Because I have to- I don't know. I have to figure all this out” You protest. You can't hear your voice, how spiked with anxiousness it is.
“There’s not much to figure out” Wanda supplies, unhelpfully as she leans against the counter, arms folded over her chest and you give her a look that’s half between a glare and a gape.
“Um, what the fuck do you mean? There’s so much to figure out, I don't even know where to start” You give a short, sharp, slightly hysterical laugh gripping the mug hard enough to hurt with one hand while cupping your forehead with the other.
“Okay, first things first. And this is the big one: do you want this?”
Well, that whole ‘I'm done crying’ thought you’d had before was a lie. You feel the tears well up once more and overflow, spill down your already swollen cheeks. Your face is hot. Your tummy is full of rocks.
You’d always hated crying. It never made you feel released or freed or lighter like it did for other people. It made you feel icky and stupid. And afterwards it always felt like you’d gotten punched in the nose.
Yes, you did have a therapist to work out those issues with, thanks.
Your mind doesn't know what to do with that question.
You look at Wanda, searching her face as though she might have the answers but she just shook her head and reached out her hand to rub your shoulder. That’s all she could offer. Her support in whatever path you we’re about to embark on.
And then you look down, at the countertop. That was usually littered with stray tubes of mascara or straightening irons. Bobby pins and half lit candles. All the things that resided in the bathrooms of girls in their mid twenties.
In place of those was now four pregnancy tests. All of which read positive.
The first two had been those double lined ones. Two bold lines- both times. Then you’d ran down to the bodega at the end of the block and gotten two more. And those we’re more straight to the point. They literally read the word pregnant- in a font that you don't think you’d ever forget.
Did you want this? Did you want a baby?
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
“I dont know- I’m not ready. The timing is all wrong” You croak.
“Okay” Wanda coo’s “well there's alternatives then-” you squeeze your eyes closed at that thought “Either way we should make a doctors appointment to make sure you’re actually pregnant. I’ve read so many stories about how unreliable these things are”
She holds up one of the tests and rambles on about all of the online articles she’d come across. How some woman had taken a dozen of ‘em, gotten all positive results and then went in and had an empty uterus.
“For one, ew. I peed on that” You nod your head at the test in her hand and she rolls her eyes.
“Other side of it- and I held your hair when you got food poisoning from that shrimp shack. I’ve come into contact with worse body fluids of yours”
“For two- I’m pregnant. I know it. I’ve known it for weeks. I knew something was wrong and I just tried to...think it away, you know? Out of sight, out of mind? I sound insane” saying the words out loud makes you realize how...ludicrous those thoughts had been. But still. It was the truth.
She just nods though “You don't”
There’s a moment of silence. Stretching, as you stew in your reality.
“I’d be doing it alone” you whisper into the mug as you sip on it “I really dont think he’d want a baby”
“You would never be alone, you know that. You have so many people in your life that would support you with this” Wanda protests, sad that you’d even say that.
“You know what I mean” You push on. Because having a good group of friends and family wouldn't change the fact that you were possibly looking at the possibility of being a single mother.
If you decided to keep it, that is.
“Yeah I do- and I don't know if I agree with that. Bucky's a lot of things, an arrogant asshole at that top of that list, but he’s a good guy and I think he’d want to be involved. He doesn't give off deadbeat dad vibes”
All of that was true. Bucky is a good guy, at the core of him.
He was kind and decent and the two of you had been friends for years upon years. He was charming, magnetic and women loved him- you’d found it amusing, before you we’re the one in his bed after a drunken night a month ago.
He’d left your messages mostly on seen since then. You’d only sent a few, but still that had stung. Him icing you out the moment he’d gotten into your pants pissed you off, not only because it was rude but because it was expected.
You knew how Bucky was with women, it had been such an idiot move to sleep with him.
It made it all the more complicated that you ran in the same social circles- had all the same friends. Sam’s small promotion dinner a couple weeks ago had been extremely awkward for you, to say the least.
He’d earned himself the cold shoulder from you and no matter how many times he’d try to broach a conversation with you, crack a joke in your direction, or single you out in a group conversation you pretended he didn't exist.
“Damn, re-jec-ted” It had been so obvious that Clint had of course pointed it out, which was uncomfortable but expected because Clint had no filter like that.
Bucky had stopped trying after that- and started flirting back with the waitress that had been throwing herself at him throughout the night. You cut out early, claiming tiredness. And upset stomach. Whatever to get you out of there.
To say it was a shitty night was a bit of an understatement and you hadn't spoken one word to him since.
“I haven't talked to him since that night- and now I’m what, supposed to call him up and tell him I’m carrying his child because he doesn't properly know how to operate a condom?
“I don't know, yeah? It doesn't mean you two need to get married, but if you choose to keep this baby, that’s going to be a conversation you’re going to have to have” Wanda is so annoying sometimes. She was such a sharp thinking human- always grounded and level headed. She claimed it was from always having to be the “good twin” growing up.
Of course she was rationalizing this whole thing while you we’re floundering about it like a fish.
“I think I should make a doctors appointment” You just mutter. You’d rather focus your attention there. It was easier, cleaner for you. A goal you could actually accomplish.
And so that’s what you did.
//////
They were able to get you in at the end of the week, which in overpopulated New York City was a godsend. And still, it felt like far too long. Like the reality of it couldn't sink in until you talked to a medical professional so you we’re left in some kind of fucked up long until then.
You tried to keep your anxious mind busy, throwing yourself into work. Talking to people over the static airways of the radio about their lives; about the world and all of its workings was so much easier than talking to anyone about what was going on with you.
The only person who knew was Wanda and you’d canceled all of your other plans during the week, not able to face anyone. Not yet.
Lots of sleepless nights, staring at the ceiling. Thinking until your brain physically hurt.
And then you’d turned to you journal- maybe if you wrote everything down it would make sense. If you could see it all, inked out, you could make a decision.
Did you want this child?
Wanda had suggested making a pro’s and con’s list and while it sounded crazy and unhelpful, and you rolled your eyes at it ‘As though that will help’, you ended up doing it anyways.
You start with Cons, naturally. Always had been too damn negative.
Cons:
-I have no fucking idea how to be a mom
-Bucky???
-My job. My career. Who’s going to watch the baby while I work?
-How in the fuck am I going to financially support a baby.
-No room in the apartment/My room is fucking tiny and where will we put a baby
(Wanda said we can turn half of the living room into a playroom/makeshift nursery. How fucked up though? Not even a real nursery)
-No car? A baby on the subway? No thank you.
-Weird to explain to people even if Bucky wants to co-parent. All our friends??
-PAIN
-Pregnancy looks so painful. Birth looks scary. My poor vagine.
-Life is basically over
-The baby will not have a grandmother from your side...
You could keep going on, but you decide to stop there. You could go on, make the list pages and pages long but you decide against it.
Pros:
-I’ve always wanted to be a mom. Always dreamed of babies and motherhood, baby fever crashes over me in waves.
-Me and Bucky’s baby is going to be cute AF(and that just pure facts)
-I have a great support system- amazing friends and family who I know will help
-Bucky could want to be involved. He probably will...maybe?
-He has a big family, i think. The baby would have lots of family
-I don't want to have an abortion. All about pro-choice, but I just...don't know if I can.
That had made you bite the end of your pen.
Adoption?
Could you give a child that you went through nine months of pregnancy up for adoption? Knowing yourself- probably not. You cant even get rid of the moth hole ridden clothes at the back of your closet. Not comparing a baby to a jean jacket- fuck, see how unequipped you were for this?
-I’d be a good mom(I think)
-I could swing it financially. Maybe get a second job
-At least I have a good insurance plan now
-My life might have more of a purpose?
You hide the lists away in one of your many journals. Stick it in the wicker basket under your night stand- and revisit it too many times in those days between.
You make a lot of other lists in that time, too.
//////
One of them sits tucked in your purse as you make your way to the eighth floor- Arms folded across your chest and the inside of your bottom lip speared between your teeth as the elevator takes you up.
Wanda stands beside you, of course. Sipping on her iced americano. You’d tried to tell her that she didn't need to come, that you were perfectly okay with going on your own. You’d gotten about two words out before she shut you down-
“I already took the afternoon off, don't be ridiculous”
You both know you wouldn't admit it, stubborn as you we’re, but you’d let out a big sigh of relief. You really didn't want to do this alone.
The waiting room is standard for this building, looks similar to the one that you sit in when you see your GP- save for a sign hanging about the door that labels it the OB-GYN.
Fake plants and those standard waiting room chairs that had that weird diagonal print on them TV’s that we’re playing the local news and tables stacked with months dated magazines. There was no windows though and it made the back of your neck feel hot.
The receptionists is nice. Middle aged with mild with droning, mellow voice. She checks you in fast and efficiently and tells you that you’ve got about a 15 minute wait on your hands.
Annoying, you think even though you give her a big grin and a sweet ‘thank you’. You’d been right on time. Why in all offices of all kinds is there always a fucking wait?
Wanda has plopped down on a chair in the corner and is fingering through an issue of LIFE, her long legs crossed at the knee. you sit next to her. The office air conditioner is blasting, it had been a muggy May in the city, but you feel overheated. You let the chunky cardigan you’d donned slip down one shoulder, exposing your skin to the chilly air.
You should feel the cold but you’re over heated. Nervous as hell. Why doesnt anyone else in this office seem nervous?
You tend to people watch when you get overly anxious like you are now. Tend to take in every little detail of every little thing around you.
There’s a black couple- the woman doesn't look pregnant but they’re holding hands tightly and they keep whispering to each other. He smiles and nudges her shoulder with his. Then there’s a Latina woman who looks just about ready to pop and is reading one of the kids book to a little boy with her eyes. A white lady, with twin carriers rocks them gently as she chats with a woman who looked to be related to her, maybe. Older and graying.
You feel like a creep but you can't stop looking at them all. Staring at each of the people who are at different stages of the same  life-path you found yourself on.
Wanda clicks her tongue as her dark eyes focus on the magazine. Muttering, her accent thick, about how the lenses they used for the shoot on the page was all wrong.
Her photographers eye was snobby and elitist.
“Y/N?” The nurse calls you back, not butchering your name which is nice and look over at your best friend.
“Are you sure you don't want me to come back with you?” Wanda whispers, big gingerbread eyes searching yours and you shake your head quickly.
You had to do this, on your own. What if...what if you ended up having to do this whole thing alone? You had to be grown, had to face this solo. That’s just how you felt, even if it might not be true.
“It’s just another appointment- I can do it on my own. I’ll live” there's a reasoning lilt in your voice that she doesn't quite buy but she nods all the same. Tells you that she’ll be waiting right there for you as you muster up all your courage and train your face into a smile, following the nurse into the back offices, the door mechanically closing behind the two of you.
The OB’s office is...warmer then you’d thought it would be. Her desk has frames of all types and her walls are plastered with colorful posters, making the alabaster of the wallpaper less daunting. There was even a window in here.
You’re perched up on the exam table/ chair thingy, staring out at the tall buildings across the street, at the people moving fast below on the sidewalks. You wonder what all of them are doing? How many of the have kids?...
When there’s a soft knock at the door your attention snaps back to the present.
Doctor Helen Cho is a petite Asian woman. She has glossy dark hair that's tied up in a clip high on the  back of her head, and her voice is friendly and her expression open as introduces herself to you and reaches out to shake your hand.
“I’m Y/N, it’s nice to meet you, too” You sound so much surer and more confident then you feel. It had always been your party trick- meeting new people and being able to talk to them. Leaving trails of barley there acquaintances in your wake.
“So it says here that you think you’re pregnant, yes?” She gets right to it, and your appreciative for it.
“Yeah, I know I am.  I took four tests and they all came out positive and I...I feel really off” you try to explain it, poorly but she seems to understand.
“When you say off, do you mean like bad feeling off or?” She probes as she sits at her desk, swivels her chair to face you. Her chocolate almond eyes weren't piercing or clinical, just waiting.
“Not really bad? But I’ve just been so tired lately and I’ve had like, zero appetite. And my breasts have been so sensitive that it hurts to put on a bra” as you tell here these things you could slap your head for not assuming you were pregnant before you’d taken the tests.
Dr. Cho hums and nods as she looks over her tablet “Well from the look of these results from those blood and urine tests your nurse went ahead and gave you when you came in, I can tell you that you are definitely about nine weeks pregnant- so those symptoms are right on with where you are”
You inhale and exhale, bigly. It’s real. It’s been real, was a notion, a happening but now...it’s so freaking real.
And there's a real life changing decision to be made-
That you’d already made before you’d even walked into this office but now seemed even clearer. Crystal, in that moment of clarity.
“I want to keep it” Your confident as you say it. Your voice cracks with some kind of emotion you couldn't even begin to explain, but you’re confident. You’re sure.
Dr. Cho grins at you, and stands, congratulating you then, after she’s sure you even want a congratulations. You like her, think you might.
It’s hard to focus on her voice though because all your mind can think of is the next big obstacle, the next big step in all of this.
How were you going to tell Bucky?
Okay guys? I posted? Crazy right? lol give me some feedback! Comment and tell me what you thought of this. I absolutely love interacting with you guys, but I’m sure ya’ll know that.

Water Under The Bridge
Tumblr media
Summary: After a messy college break up, you and Steve parted ways, making the group’s friendly reunions just slightly awkward.
~~
“You sure you’re alright with this?”
“He was sure the last three times you asked him, Nat.”
Natasha glowered at the man in the passenger seat, reaching out to punch his arm while keeping her other hand on the wheel as she drove. “I’m being a good friend!”
“Well, you’re not being a very good girlfriend!” Clint retorted, rubbing his arm that he was convinced was already beginning to bruise.
“Woman up.”
“Guys,” said a voice from the backseat as he tried to distract the couple from their brewing argument. “It’ll be fine. Yeah, I haven’t seen her in a while and the last time I did, we were technically breaking up and it hurt like hell—”
“You’re not really selling the whole ‘I’m okay’ thing, pal,” Clint interrupted.
“But we’re both mature adults now,” Steve continued. “And I’m sure we’re capable of speaking to each other again without falling apart. Besides, we’ve both moved on anyway.”
“Uh-huh,” Natasha said, pulling the car to a stop in the street.
“We have,” Steve argued.
“And I’m agreeing with you.”
She wasn’t.
Similarly to Steve, you were also being questioned about how you were doing with the impending reunion. The interrogation had started as soon as you had met up with your friend a few blocks away from the restaurant.
“Wanda, how many times do we have to go over this?”
“Forgive me for being concerned!” Wanda replied sarcastically. “Do I have to remind you what happened at Thanksgiving? And you didn’t even show up at Christmas!”
“I was working,” you defended yourself. “Pepper can be a hardass boss, you know.”
“You were hiding,” Wanda retorted, causing you to grumble under your breath. Why did she have to know you so well? “Now, are you going to be okay?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
Wanda gave you an unamused stare.
“Last time we saw each other was... awkward, sure,” you agreed. “But we’re adults now. We got this.”
Steve watched as both Natasha and Clint began to unbuckle their seatbelts to get out of the car and found himself surprised at how quickly they had gotten to the restaurant. He had been so consumed in his racing thoughts for the majority of the car ride that it felt like they had only been driving for five minutes and now that he was seeing his friends bundle themselves up in warm clothing to fight off the winter chill and meet up with the rest of their group, he grew nervous.
He hadn’t spoken to you in almost a year due to you both heading off to different colleges, and it had been even longer since he saw you in person. But that was about to change. In fact, if he looked close enough, he was fairly sure he could see you making your way to the restaurant with a talkative Wanda at your side.
Heart thumping against his ribcage, Steve slipped his hat back on and stepped out of the car with Natasha and Clint. He kept his gaze downwards but couldn’t help taking a quick glance back at the approaching girls. He saw you falter slightly in your step as you caught sight of him but your arm looped through Wanda’s meant that you had to continue on, and you did so with a determined look on your face that he had seen many times before at school.
“Hey guys!” Wanda said with a grin, pulling away from you to hug the trio approaching the restaurant. “I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever.”
“You saw us a few months ago!” Natasha argued with a smile as she switched from hugging Wanda to hugging you, who complimented her new blonde hair. She had replied with a simple ‘red was getting boring’.
The only two that had yet to hug and greet each other were the pair of exes whose friends did their best to pretend like they weren’t watching them.
Seeming unsure, Steve settled with a nod and brief smile in your direction.
“Hey,” he tucked his hands into his coat pocket.
“Steve,” you answered with a shaky smile of your own.
There was a pause and sensing an awkwardness in the air, Clint huffed out a sigh and spoke up.
“Let’s go inside, shall we? Everyone’s waiting.”
Both you and Steve seemed relieved at the attention shift and quite happily entered the restaurant behind the rest of your friends. The only other people in the restaurant were two women with their children and a few businesspeople. Your group was seated rather quickly since Tony, Bucky, Thor, and Sam had all arrived early and gotten a large enough table.
Greeting the boys, everyone else sat down. Natasha and Clint were facing each other as were Bucky and Sam; Tony and Thor sat at either end and Wanda was leaving the seat in front of her open for Scott whose train was late and would be arriving soon. That left you and Steve to sit in front of each other and Steve found himself cursing the gods at your luck.
You looked at Natasha with wide eyes, to which she mouthed ‘sorry’ in reply to. They had made a deal to sit next to each other but neither of you even thought about who you would be sitting in front of.
As they all looked at the menus that had been placed in front of them, Natasha whispered in your ear.
“Do you wanna switch seats?” she asked as quietly as she could.
“And make it obvious?” you frowned, not noticing Steve’s eyes on you. “I can’t do that.”
The waiter appeared then and took your orders. You were so startled by his presence that you ordered the first thing your eyes saw when you looked at the menu and it would seem Steve did the same. Wanda ordered on behalf of Scott who had just sent her a text saying he was only five minutes away.
“So,” Sam began an attempt at a conversation. “How's your new job going?”
“It’s good,” you said, tucking your hair behind her ear. You were relieved to be speaking about something simple. “There’s actually some talks about promotions coming up. I think I might have a chance.”
“That’s great!” Bucky acknowledged as he took a sip of his water. “Isn’t it, Steve?”
“Y-yeah, really great,” Steve replied. And it was. Really great. He was proud of you excelling at one of your dream jobs, just as he knew you would. Though he couldn’t help but think about the fact that he should have known all this already. He used to be one of the first people you told about this kind of stuff; the person you came to when you were happy, when you were sad, and everything in between. But all that had changed. And Steve didn’t like it one bit.
“You look good, Steve,” you stated, deciding to take the metaphorical plunge and be the first of them to properly initiate a conversation.
“You look tired,” Steve paled. Why had he said that? Well, you did look tired but work does that to you. He should’ve just returned the compliment but he panicked when your familiar eyes met his and he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. “In a good way. You look good. T-tired looks good on you.”
Thor and Sam looked at each other in exasperation at their friend’s verbal vomit and Tony grimaced behind his water glass.
Thankfully, you just laughed. But Steve wasn’t done with his ramblings.
“I should know. After all, I’ve seen you tired plenty of times before. All those late nights we spent together.”
Tony choked on his water.
“He means when we spent all those nights studying!” you explained, a blush rising to your cheeks.
“What else would I mean?” Steve questioned before continuing on. He was screaming at himself to stop but for some reason, the words just kept spilling out. “I just meant you look good. Beautiful, even.”
To shut himself up, Steve picked up his glass and downed several gulps of water. You looked frazzled, your eyes slightly wide. Natasha and Wanda glanced at each other desperately only to find the other with no idea how to move the conversation on. Bucky was looking around the restaurant, looking as though he wished he could be sitting at any table but theirs.
Thankfully, the silence was broken by Scott who came running in, slightly out of breath. “Sorry, I’m late.”
With cheeks red from the sting of the wind, he peeled off his coat and finally collapsed into his place at the table with a relieved sigh. Frowning slightly, he glanced around at the unusually quiet group.
“What did I miss?”

KNOBINSON BANNED & BETS TO LAND (IceMan Update. It’s all Happening)
Ok Kidz seems ages and so it is . Good news Investment wise is that almost all the pre - season Football bets are still in the mix with at least one Banker and only one position definitely underwater. We have also undertaken some interesting recent investments.
IceMan is going for growth and unlike some major Brexshiteers is keeping all his ( due to be considerable ) funds in this country.
Ok being an ethical investment concern I need to update you on the current political climate and how it impacts our values and actions . Brexit is a  Shit show say no more . Trump aka Don the Con the Pussy Grabber got a kicking in the mid terms . He is now under pressure from multiple investigations and his ‘allegedly’  syphilitic addled brain is becoming more delusional and incoherent. Tick Tock. Good news the Kurdish led SDF are mopping up the last remnants of the ‘glorious ,’Daesh Caliphate . Bad news is the Turkish Fascists are waiting in the wings to attack Rojava and destroy the most progressive and democratic enclave in the Region. Anti Semitism has got so bad in the Labour Party that Hope not Hate ( an officially endorsed IceMan charity ) has got involved .  Sort this out People . Do I  like the Right Wing Bibi Netanyahu Israeli government , Hell No . Can I criticise it , Oh Yeah.  Shall I use Anti Semitic tropes to do so  , No cos then you would be anti Semitic Jew baiting Bigot. Finally politically Stephen Yaxley-Lennon aka Tommy Knobinson . I hear this hate monger has been banned from some social media . Good. Downside is that he will stage lots of ‘ free speech martyr ‘ rallies this year . Upside is there are more of us than them so get amongst the Battle for the Streets ( Whose streets , Our Streets ).
Sports and Betting .
Championship Derby County 5/1 promotion. ok two months ago this looked really promising but they are having a bit of a wobble . We’re contenders for an automatic promotion place but now sit 2 points outside the play offs . They have a reputation for flattering to deceive but despite drifting to 8/1 ( ShitePrice) I have put this in the loss column yet . If they can regain their confidence they are capable of going on a winning spree and can hopefully secure a play off berth.  This is now 40/60 they even make a play off . Worried but not a write off ( yet )
League 1 Charlton  Athletic 9/2 Promotion . The Addicks are treading water and their price remains unchanged . Like Derby they were challenging for an automatic promotion spot earlier in the Season.  They have slipped back as a result of too many draws and sit in a play off place with a 7 point cushion . Recent sale of star striker though is worrying . Still I would have settled for this at start of season .  Expect to get to play offs where anything can happen . League 2 Mansfield Town 9/4 Promotion. The Stags sit in third place which is crucially an automatic promotion slot . Like the two teams  mentioned above they were even more prominent in December . They have gone off the boil a bit lately but hoping their win on Saturday has steadied the ship . They have 2 point cushion for automatic place and a comfortable 7 point gap in the play off race .  Now trading a very skinny 1/3 ( IcePrice) .  Expect to collect
League 2 Leyton Orient  13/2 Promotion . The O’s  the Pride of East London ( West Ham Forgetaboutit) . Bit of a theme here but once again they were better placed
before Christmas when they led the League . Only one automatic place in this league and that goes to the winners . This is a super competitive Division and they currently sit in third place 5 points off the top but with 2 games in hand .  This is gonna down to the wire . They will probably have to do it the hard way via play offs but I am  cautiously optimistic of a pick up .  Latest odds 11/10 ( IcePrice) .
Scotland Have not bothered with the SPL as only gonna be one winner Celtic . The Bhoys will stack up another title as they continue their march to Ten in a row. I normally back Aberdeen to come runners up in this league , however , give it a miss this year and just as well as looks like Rangers will come in a distant second place .
Scottish Championship Ross County 5/2 to win League. Well Ross County Boss County . They are smashing this up 5 points clear at the top with a game in hand . This will be a winner . Now 4/7 IcePrice
Scottish League One
Airdrie 8/1 Airdrie are based in Lanarkshire in what is known as ‘The Buckfast Triangle ‘and judged by performances this year they have over indulged on the ‘ Buckie’ big time .  Never thought they would win but expected they would be competitive for a top 3 place . They are currently priced at 1000/1 (Mega ShitePrice) haha there is always a total shocker
Scottish League Two, Clyde 11/4 to win League. Super competitive league with Edinburgh City and Peterhead leading the way .’ The Bully Wee ‘ are in 3rd 5 points adrift but with a game in hand . Regret they will probably come up a bit short but gonna enjoy the chase. Have drifted out to 5/1 (ShitePrice)
Champions League Mentioned last time that I took a bit of 16/1 on Athletico Madrid They did not set the world  alight during the group stage and I was concerned when they dew Juventus in the last 16 . However they carry a handy 2-0 lead into the 2nd leg and trading at 11/1 IcePrice
Only one new football position and that is Watford in FA cup 50/1 each way . the draw has been kind to them and they have made the qtr final where they have a winnable home game against Crystal Palace . They have shortened in the markets to 14/1 IcePrice
Bits and Bobs
My NFL pick Jacksonville Jaguars ( more like Jugglers ) did not even make the play offs .  On the upside it meant I could tune out from this ridiculous Sport early. In full disclosure I had a loser in the King George on Boxing Day at Kempton, Coneygree ran a fine race but failed to make the first 3 . Shame as got on at 40/1 and he was 20/1 starting price .
New Racing
My favourite sporting occasion is Grand National Day  in April . I always watch in the old family home like I did with my Nan when I was a kid. This year as usual I have got on early  immediately after the weights announced and had some 33/1 each way about Rathvinden an Irish horse trained by Willie Mullins. As I hoped he had it primed for its prep run where it ran out a good winner. Off the back of that effort the price has reduced to 16/1 2nd favourite IcePrice.
Got a 40/1 poke in the Cheltenham Gold Cup lined up for March called Invitation Only each way. To be fair he is still available at that price which I think is generous. Finally looking ahead to the Epsom Derby in June  and could not help getting amongst it well early . Backed Too Darn Hot at 4/1 now priced up at 11/4 so IcePrice. Expect this machine to deliver and be a very short price on the day
On the family front IceMan Junior has relocated to  his wife’s native district of Queens in NYC,  They are represented there by Congresswoman  the ubiquitous AOC ( if u dunno then where u been ) .
That is all Kidz
