20 years ago a deep space mission was supposed to depart for Proxima Centauri but the entire crew disappeared before launch

now a group of friends who’ve spent their whole lives obsessed with it break into the ship to try and figure out what happened - but when they go to look at the dark matter engine, it turns on and starts sending them into space - and gives them strange magical abilities

along with a holographic ai copy of the ship’s captain, they have to deal with their strange abilities, reckon with the fact they might be spending years of their lives in space, and unravel the mystery of what happened to the old crew

#The Stars Too Fondly #aroaessidhe 2025 reads #I have mixed feelings about this! on one hand; I did enjoy it a lot overall? but also it wasn’t entirely my vibe for some reason #it’s a combination of high stakes plot and sweet found family and romance #the main plot is a bit silly maybe… and the villain kinda… cartoonishly evil.#There was a lot going on and I think I might have preferred if it just focused more on a couple of the elements…#The characters and relationships are fun though admittedly I wasn’t *super* invested in them #+ there’s always an awkwardness to found family that’s already established as found family. like; I guess; if you tell me they are; sure.#also they do feel a bit more like teenagers than 27yos; and the idea that they have PHDs……#I think it’s something you have to suspend a bit of disbelief over.#(I guess not that people with phd’s can’t be silly and fun. and as a 28yo i know people my age are like this. nonetheless)#I did enjoy the development of the main romance though #tho i will say i would have enjoyed an ending to the romance that committed to the holographic gf instead of ‘solving’ that....#however the ‘turns out my sex dreams about you were prophetic visions of the future’ is pretty funny.#I always enjoy a surprise aroace character! even if it’s just an offhand mention #yay vico ortiz narration!!#Anyway if you're into dramatic scififantasy romcom vibes I would check it out!
