Ruffneck - “Everybody Be Somebody” St. John’s Playhouse: Fierce Club Classics by DJ Dave Matthias Song released in 1996. Mix released in 1997. House

Ruffneck was an enigmatic house quintet that hailed from northern New Jersey. Throughout their tenure, which spans almost two decades, they were able to spawn a trio of smash dance hits. None were more popular than “Everybody Be Somebody,” which featured fellow Garden State house act Jomanda;s Joanna “Yavahn” Thomas on vocals. This unique piece of mid-90s house managed to take the club world by storm, remaining atop the Billboard dance charts for a solid three weeks, reaching #13 on the UK singles chart, and selling over a whopping 200,000 copies worldwide.

What’s so striking about Ruffneck is that they debuted all the way back in 1987, with a 12″ called The Power - The Rhythm, and weren’t heard from again until 1995, when they released Everybody Be Somebody. Who goes into hibernation for eight years before dropping their second release? Especially house musicians! What’s more is that Ruffneck landed on MAW Records, the label owned and operated by Masters At Work, quite possibly the greatest house duo of all time. MAW was just starting at the time, but it’s wild to think that two titans of house would put their stake in this group who’d only made one release eight years ago. But boy, was that a risk well worth taking.

The success of “Everybody Be Somebody” led to an unleashing of multiple remixes. The German label Peppermint Jam would release their own 12″ in 1995, featuring three remixes by Mousse T. The remix I’m posting today is his “Back In The Days Mix.” Compared to the original, this remix is quite more uptempo.

“Everybody Be Somebody” is inspired by and samples the song “Bostich” by the eccentric Swiss electronic duo Yello. Ruffneck take a single line from that song— the yelling of “everybody be somebody!”—and play with it, liberally. They feature the full sample throughout, but they also use small snippets of it to make it sound like some unintelligible, shrieking bark. On the bridge of the “Back In The Days Mix,” for example, a small piece undergirds a sweet lead keyboard solo. And when it plays in full, Yavahn’s smooth and calm vocals contrast it nicely.

As it’s starkly different from the original, Mousse T. gives this song a brand new beat. With a lead melody consisting of pricking acid stabs, he lays rounded, muffled, and ringing keys underneath that slowly build. In the beginning, Mousse T. unveils some high-pitched disco string synths, but he removes them to build anticipation as he peppers in other subtle parts and lets those ringing keys grow. When the chorus hits, he re-inserts the strings to complement both Yevahn’s vocals and the Yello sample. The backbeat, originally a mix of a 4/4 kick, hand claps, some tambourine, and a light and swift hand drum rhythm, adds more elements along the way, including some pumping bass, hi-hats, and snares. In the second half, a relatively quiet “woo!” vocal sample is added into the mix.

Just an all-around great mid-90s house remix. Ring in the new year with it, why don’t you?
