“You really should go.”
All Dirk got in response was a grumble from across the shared office space, his partner making it obvious he was trying to give as little attention to the subject as possible by feigning interest towards whatever was on his monitor. Failing, of course, but trying nonetheless.
It was his sister Scarlett’s wedding the next day. She’d obviously invited her brother to come, family event and all, but the man’s disdain for crowds immediately had him making some excuse about a case they were working on being why he couldn’t go. Which, Dirk knew was bullshit, since they’d been case free the entire week - he would know, his visions usually heralded any incoming ones after all.
“It’s your littlest sister. If anything, just go for a little bit, say hi to your family, and then leave. You know she’d appreciate it.”
“It’s in New York. I have to literally fly there, and there’s no dipping in quickly, especially with my family.”
Dirk let out another sigh through his nose, standing up from his chair to move over to the other side of the room. Plopping himself down on the edge of the other man’s desk, crossed arms idly tapped their fingers along his legs as he thought for a moment.
“Hotel rooms do exist for a reason.” Another grunt of a grumble from the older man, Dirk looking over towards the man’s computer monitor then just in time to see the other switching tabs from a flight reservation sight. With their incomes, a last minute plane ticket wouldn’t dent either of their bank accounts, so all that needed to really be done was the persuading to go in the first place part.
“What if I came along?” While he wasn’t looking directly at Jules - off to the side as per usual - it was obvious the man had looked towards him with a surprised expression.
“You’d come?” A simple nod from the younger man then. “Why?”
Dirk shrugged his shoulders lightly then. “If it gets you to go, that’s good enough reason. Though, I do imagine your family is curious about your awkward partner you panicked over the last time you saw them.” That text he’d sent was still burned into the back of his brain, plus the ensuing panicked call from his partner moments later.
Not his proudest moment.
“I didn’t panic.”
“Mmmhm.”
“Fine, we’ll go.”
It was Dirk’s turn to shoot the man a side glance of surprise, eyes turning to the monitor once more to see his partner change the quantity of tickets he was purchasing from one to two. “I’ll pay you b-”
“Nope. My family, my event, I’m paying.”
Letting out a small sigh of defeat - he knew by this point it wasn’t worth trying to fight the older man over something like that - Dirk jumped back up into a standing position, walking over to their printer to grab the tickets that were now appearing from it. Great, late flight that night. At least it wouldn’t be a terribly long one.
“But I made a reservation!”
Dirk could feel the older man’s rage levels rising by the second. Apparently the hotel that’d been a part of their packaged booking no longer had the room they’d reserved available, leaving them only the option of one with a single, King sized bed. Without hesitation, Dirk placed a hand on the other’s lower-mid back, gaining his attention for a moment and purposefully making eye contact as to try and transfer a sense of calm to Jules.
“It’s alright.” His tones were soothing as he watched the older man take in a slower breath, knowing his emotions were transferring as desired before he finally broke the connection and looked back towards the woman behind the check-in desk. “Thank you for the help, we’ll be fine.”
Taking the key cards from the woman who seemed overly relieved that she wasn’t going to be yelled at, Dirk practically dragged the older man over to the elevator. While he didn’t say anything, he let his silence inadvertently berate his partner. It wasn’t the first time in their partnership that he’d had to subdue the man’s temper in public, and he didn’t doubt it’d be the last.
Given it was already past midnight by the time they finally stepped into their room, the pair took turns in the bathroom getting ready for bed before the discussion of said bed came around.
“I can take the c-”
“Nope.”
Dirk let out a small huff of a laugh through his nose. He knew that was coming, but it didn’t stop the man from finding entertainment in it. It was just how his partner was, always caring about those close to him no matter how much he said else wise.
“Alright.” No argument or compromising needed, Dirk taking his side of the bed and the other man taking his. It wasn’t like they hadn’t slept in the same bed before, despite it being on accident the time previous. The vision he’d had that day had been so long and so intense that he couldn’t even think of protesting the other taking away his symptoms afterwards.
All he remembered was waking up in the middle of the night, opening his eyes to find the other’s face right in front of his, foreheads touching and the other’s arm loosely clasping his neck. It’d taken a few more minutes to figure everything out as his partner groggily woke up as well, but apparently Jules had brought his damn near passed out self to the bed when they’d gotten back to the other’s apartment, and as he usually tried to do, had gone about taking as much of the pain away as he possibly could. Once they’d both reached an equilibrium of pain between them, they’d both passed out, and that was how they’d inadvertently slept in the same bed the first time.
Such memories came back once more as Dirk found himself waking up in the middle of the night, blinking a few times as he realized said memories were practically his reality once again. The feel of the other’s hand sleepily brushing his chin had been what’d woken him up, a faint smile dusting Dirk’s lips before realization took over.
Jules, as much as he refuted it, loved his family, and wouldn’t purposely miss something as important as a wedding because of there being a group of people. That meant there was another reason for the man’s excuse, Dirk letting out the breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.
Him, it was him. Jules had wanted to stay in Chicago to make sure he didn’t deal with a vision on his own, especially given he hadn’t had one in over a week - a huge oddity since the start of their partnership. There was always at least one vision a week, if not multiples given the crime rate in a city as large as Chicago, and the older man didn’t want to risk leaving when the chance of one was overly high.
Dirk’s smile promptly returned to his lips, bringing a hand up from under the blanket he was nestled beneath to gently grasp the one that’d brushed his cheek. Without waking entirely, Jules let out a small grunt of sorts, the grip on his hand tightening slightly before the other fell back into a deep sleep.
He really did luck out in getting an amazing partner.
Walking down one of the hallways at the wedding venue in New York the next day, Dirk briefly let a wave of telekinetic power brush over the space near him, only to get met with an invisible smack in the arm. Not his fault he was making sure his invisible partner hadn’t gone running for the hills! They’d come up with the plan they were about to execute in surprising his sister, but given the other’s flighty tendencies when invisible, he felt compelled to check he was still there.
Eventually coming to a door decorated with white and labelled as the bride’s dressing room, the younger man raised his hand to gently knock on the treated wood, giving the older woman who opened it a gentle smile in return to her confusion. “Can I help you?”
“I actually have a delivery, for the bride,” he said to the person he recognized as Jules’ mother through photos he’d seen, getting prompted to enter the room, but waiting a few seconds to ensure his invisible partner entered first before doing so himself. As he got confused glances from the bridal party that were looking for some sort of package he presumed, only the sound of a loud gasp from Beatrice that caused everyone to jump a little broke the silence as his partner materialized behind where the bride was standing.
“Julian Emil Roderick! You brat!”
Immediately the woman decked out in white spun in place, her face promptly lighting up at the sight of her brother before her arms flew out to pull him into what Dirk could only assume was a damn near bone crushing hug given the grunt pushed from the older man’s lungs. “Oh my god, Jules! You made it!” Scarlett squeaked out, only to pull away and smack him playfully across the chest while making obvious eye contact. “You jerk, sneaking up on all of us like that!”
Before the conversation could get any further, one of the man’s other sister’s looked his way, realization lighting up her face as she looked Dirk over. “Oh, and this ‘delivery man’ is your partner, isn’t he?” While he wasn’t sure if the other’s family had ever seen pictures of him, it wasn’t hard to deduce that the one person Jules would be fine with using his powers around outside of family would be the partner he’d fretted over so much the last time he’d come home.
All Dirk did was simply nod, only to suddenly be inundated with a train of his partner’s family members taking their turns introducing themselves and giving him tight, warm hugs. Honestly, it made him miss his own family, but now wasn’t a time to let his thoughts go in that direction.
Soon after they were ushered from the room, eventually making it to the groom’s dressing area where the older man’s brothers were getting ready as well. Another round of greetings and hugs later, and the partners were headed out into the hall to seat themselves near the front.
The ceremony was beautiful, and even with having just met the other’s family only briefly before hand, Dirk definitely felt at ease despite being around so many people. It was obvious the two at the front of the church loved each other greatly as their vows were spoken, especially when he felt a hand intertwine with his own and hold on tightly.
Looking down to his hand, then up at his partner that was holding it, he promptly realized the man had made eye contact with the bride and undoubtedly was awash with emotions of love and happiness. Chuckling mentally, Dirk simply left his hand clasped with the other’s and looked back towards the front of the church until the older man realized what he’d been doing and pulled away from the connection.
When the reception finally came along, Dirk watched in amusement as Jules was practically stuck on the dance floor with his siblings for a good hour straight, having at least three dances with the bride and a few others with his sisters, mother, and other more distant relatives.
Of course when he was finally allowed to retreat, Dirk wasn’t able to even get a word out when Jules sat next to him as his hand was getting nabbed up by the bride so he could be drug to the dance floor next. He could practically feel his partner’s smug little smile looking into his back, giving the woman one of his smaller, more practiced smiles once they came to a halt among the crowd of people dancing about.
“So,” the woman started as they took up their dancing positions - Dirk was honestly surprised at his lack of anxiety from the sheer amount of skin to skin contact he’d had thus far that day - moving a few steps before she continued. “You deal with my bratty brother daily and haven’t gone insane yet. Is that maybe your ‘specialty’, iron clad sanity?”
Dirk immediately let out a small incredulous huff, taking the opportunity to spin the woman before they continued along in the dance, shaking his head. “No, but I wouldn’t need it. Jules is an amazing partner.” A look of pure shock took over the woman’s face then, the man shrugging slightly. “We balance each other out well. He helps me with my...specialties, perfectly if I may say so, and I level him out and respect his specialties. It’s not a hard arrangement to figure out.” He’d quickly figured out ‘specialty’ meant ‘powers’ given they were in the middle of a crowded dance floor and all.
“Wow,” Scarlett muttered, Dirk giving a mildly confused look in return. “No wonder my brother speaks so highly of you, you’re pretty much perfect for him.” That had another lightly amused huff leaving the man’s nose as he looked over towards where his partner was sitting, watching as the man playfully punched one of his brother’s in the arm.
“Aww, and you even have a special smile for him!”
Dirk’s attention promptly snapped back to the one he was dancing with, a more serious look of confusion on his face then that apparently asked what she was talking about. “The smiles you’ve given everyone all day so far have all seemed practiced, but when you smiled while looking at my brother, it seemed real, heartfelt.”
While he didn’t realize it, a light blush light up the man’s cheeks. He hadn’t realized he apparently had a ‘Jules Smile’, especially when Cam always joked that his partner had a ‘Dirk Smile’. “Well, I’m incredibly glad to have him as a partner, to even just have him in my life. It’s been a while since I’ve had someone to rely on like I do him.”
Without warning, the woman brought him into a similarly bone crushing hug that his partner had been plagued with earlier, letting out a small gasp when he was released only to have his hand tugged as the woman zipped them back to where the older man was sitting. Practically forced back into his seat next to Jules, his partner spared him an apologetic side glance. “All your ribs intact?”
Letting out a small chuckle, Dirk nodded through his typical side glance, watching as he was given one of the supposed ‘Dirk Smiles’ from the other man. “How about you, all your emotions your own?” he asked in return, though in a bit more hushed tones, only to watch as Jules paid his brother’s arm who was sitting on his other side another light punch.
“Mostly.”
As his older brother chuckled deviously at the implications, Dirk’s smile from before returned. He was alright with this, the life his powers had laid out for him, along as his partner remained a large part of it.
