16: “Can you teach me?”

57: “One day I’ll ask you to marry me.” “And one day, I’ll say yes.”

Mingming laughed softly, waving as one of the trainees from his company left the practice room. You and Mingming both happened to have free time so you decided to visit for the week. There was just one problem: you didn’t speak or understand Mandarin. You both spoke Korean which was how you communicated, but you couldn’t understand anything he had said to anybody around you. He was your boyfriend, though, so you felt like you should at least make the effort to learn.

After the boy had left and Mingming looked back down at his phone, you stretched your legs out in front of you on the hardwood floor and shyly cleared your throat.

“I wish I knew Mandarin...” you mused out loud, staring at the wall behind you in the mirror.

Mingming looked up from his phone, a smile creeping up onto his face, “Yeah?”

You nodded, turning to look at him, “Can you teach me?”

“Of course I can!” he grinned, locking his phone and setting it in his lap. “I’ve been wanting to, I just didn’t know if you wanted to.”

“Why wouldn’t I want to? I should know the native language of the person I love, right? And like, when we have kids and stuff, they’ll obviously learn, and then if I don’t know it and they do, they could talk shit about me and I’d never know.”

Mingming was just laughing softly as you spoke, noticing how you were rambling again. It was something you frequently did when it was just the two of you, but he always enjoyed every sentence that would fall from your lips.

“What?” you asked, cocking your head to one side as he shook his head and grinned down at his lap.

“One day, I’ll ask you to marry me,” he promised, looking back at you with a fond smile.

“And one day, I’ll say yes,” you told him, taking his hand and giving it a squeeze. You paused before quickly adding, “In Mandarin.”

He laughed and nodded, “Of course.”
